- Morality Pet: Ibuki tries to be this to her, but once he becomes more focused on stopping the Makamou, she starts slipping.
- Skipping School: Deconstructed. As Kiriya points out, her focus more on being an Oni than schoolwork makes her seem uncommitted when she decides to start going back to school.
- Tsundere: A friendly variant. At first, she's abrasive with Asumu, though as the show went on, she slowly warms up to him.
Kyosuke Kiriya
Portrayed by: Yuichi Nakamura (live), Makoto Ito (suit)
- The Ace: In his debut episode, he pretty much did everything in school.
- Butt-Monkey: Kyosuke may be an ace and a cheating jerk, but even he gets the short end of the stick at times, ranging from the video chat with his mother to cleaning toilets as punishment and being forced by Hibiki to re-enroll back to school when he initially dropped out.
- Exact Words: After critiquing the English teacher’s pronunciation, he challenges him to a reading competition. In French.
- Freudian Excuse: His desire to follow in Hibiki’s footsteps stems from a desire to surpass his father, who died in a firefighting accident when Kiriya was a child.
- Hard Work Hardly Works: He barely keeps up in the training, but eventually becomes a fully fledged Oni.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: For how much of a cheater he can be at times and how abrasive he is with Asumu and several others, Kyosuke does actually care about them and tries his best to be earnest and develop as a person. Case in point, towards the end of the series, he gets upset with Asumu for wanting to drop out of being an Oni apprentice for what he believed was something more "childish", to the point of still unforgiving him a year later, Kyosuke still finds Asumu to be an impressive individual after they saved Hitomi.
- Jerkass Has a Point:
- His critique of the English teacher’s pronunciation isn’t entirely unwarranted. One would expect a language teacher to have good pronunciation in his subject language.
- Similarly, his criticisms of Akira and Asumu in episode 36 basically call them out on not staying focused on their shared goal of becoming an Oni, accusing them of not taking it seriously.
- Momma's Boy: His mother once showed up in video chat on his TV, embarassing the heck out of him, especially with his medications brought up.
- The Rival: To Asumu, especially once he experiences the battles of the Oni.
- Spoiled Brat: Has plenty of belonging an lived in a luxurious house.
- What the Hell, Hero?: His scheme of having him and Asumu compete to be Akira's apprentice ended with her being endangered. The adults ended up aggressively calling him and Asumu out for that reckless action.
