Modern Iron Fists

    Danny Rand

Danny Rand

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/5585295_capture.png

Alter Ego: Daniel Thomas "Danny" Rand-K’ai

Notable Aliases: Daredevil, The Living Weapon, Young Dragon, Daniel Thomas Rand, Daniel Rand-Kai

First Appearance: Marvel Premier #15 (May, 1974)

Daniel Rand is the rich multi-millionaire head of the Rand Corporation. He is also the Immortal Iron Fist, the latest in a long line of warriors who wielded the power of the dragon Shou-Lao, a master of Kung Fu, and defender of the ancient city of K'un-Lun. Able to channel his chi into his fist, making it "like unto a thing of iron". He is one of, if not the, best fighter in the Marvel Universe.

  • Awesome, but Impractical: The Iron Fist ability, at least initially. It was too powerful to use on a standard mook as it'll kill him, and left Danny weakened after using his chi. He's gotten better that it doesn't drain him like it used to.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: The mystics of K'un-Lun obviously don't tell people how to win the fight against Shou-Lao. Danny, just as all the other potential Iron Fists before him, had to figure it out himself before the dragon turned him into a pile of roasted meat.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Danny's usually a pretty nice guy, and generally mellow. Upset him, and learn the hard way what it feels like to be hit by a man who can make his fist like unto iron. When he first met Luke, Luke had hurt Misty Knight. Danny punched Luke, who has unbreakable skin, through a wall. And across the street. And then the building Luke hit collapsed on top of him. That's what happens when Danny doesn't pull his punches.
  • Brains and Brawn: When he works with Luke Cage, he's the brains to Cage's brawn. Ironic given how clueless Danny can be when it comes to almost anything other than martial arts.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: During the "Return of the Dragon" storyline, Danny was corrupted and forced to fight the Black Panther. He nearly killed him, but was beaten when the Panther used a radio earpiece to undo the brainwashing.
  • Characterization Marches On: Initially, Danny spoke with a blunt emotional affect, not using contractions. Once Chris Claremont took over writing duties, this generally vanished.
  • Charles Atlas Superpower: Yes, he can use the chi of the dragon Shou-Lao, but his martial arts skills are all his own, learned by studying in K'un-Lun most of his life.
  • Chest Insignia: Danny has a tattoo burned into his chest from facing the dragon Shou-Lao the Undying, as do most other Iron Fists (though some have the symbol printed elsewhere instead).
  • Conveniently an Orphan: Iron Fist loses both of his parents at the age of nine, while on his way to K'un-Lun.
  • Costume Copy Cat: During Civil War, Iron Fist pretended to be Daredevil while Matt Murdock was in prison.
  • Crimefighting with Cash: Zigzagged. Danny's millions have nothing to do with his skills, but on occasion (especially during Civil War and its aftermath), his main contribution to a team is financial.
    • He also paid for the Avengers Mansion so the New Avengers can base themselves there — note, it cost only one dollar, but still.
    • After his return from K'un-Lun, his recruitment pitch to Luke Cage was to find out how many street-level problems could be solved by throwing bundles of cash at them.
  • Deadpan Snarker: While he has his spiritual side and does like to maintain "oneness", he wouldn't be a Marvel superhero if he didn't have an occasional smartass remark leave his lips.
  • Energy Absorption: One of the less used abilities of the Iron Fist which has fallen by the wayside was that it could absorb various energies, including nuclear radiation and magic, including the normally lethal Flames of the Faltine. Danny didn't even know about this power.
  • Enhanced Punch: Iron Fist's sole superpower (at first) is to charge his fist with chi to make it "like unto a thing of iron." While he eventually gets more powers to go along with his Charles Atlas Superpower, he's generally just a skilled martial artist with an occasional super-powered punch.
  • Evil Costume Switch: In the last year or so of Power Man and Iron Fist, Danny switched to a red costume after his guilt temporarily turned him evil. Though this Danny was later Retconned into being a doppelganger, the evil red costume made a return during a Black Panther storyline where Iron Fist was Brainwashed by Chiantang and forced to fight the titular hero.
  • Fights Like a Normal: Especially early on, when using the Iron Fist tired him out much quicker.
  • Fish out of Water: In the early days, what with having grown up in K'un-Lun, Danny was just a little out of sorts dealing with modern America. He's gotten a lot better about it.
  • Foil: To Shang-Chi; one fights impulsively with weapons, the other can fight rationally without tools.
  • Fully Absorbed Finale: The original Power Man and Iron Fist series ended with Danny being beaten to death by Captain Hero, and Luke going on the run after being framed for the murder. This was resolved years later in a Namor story arc, where it was established that the whole thing was an elaborate ruse concocted by Master Khan.
  • The Greatest Style: He trained in the mystical K'un-Lunquan martial arts, which enables Ki Manipulation and other superhuman abilities. He is also a master of many other martial art styles.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: His relationship with Luke Cage.
  • Ki Manipulation: The titular "Iron Fist" and countless more.
  • The Law of Power Proportionate to Effort: Played With. He used to summon his Iron Fist in a very conservative manner due to the stress it caused. That limit has since been removed, however, because it made him rather useless after he began teaming up with stronger superheroes.
  • Legacy Immortality: This is why Iron Fist is immortal; it is the position that will never die, not its occupant. This also applies to the other Immortal Weapons, hence their collective name.
  • Made of Iron: Danny, as you'd expect from someone with the name Iron Fist. One issue of the 2017 Defenders series has his neck snapped by Diamondback. Properly snapped and everything, without a fake-out. And then the next issue has Danny get right up again and beat the ever-lasting crud out of Diamondback.
  • Manchild: In the earliest stories, it's pointed out many times growing up focused solely on vengeance has left Danny a little emotionally stunted. Fortunately, he grows out of it quickly enough.
  • Mighty Whitey: Largely played down in the more modern series (with the advent of the other Immortal Weapons and previous Iron Fists, many of whom are Asian), though introducing one of the previous Iron Fists, only to declare him another white guy who out-mastered the masters of K'un-Lun did raise a few eyebrows. Though his choice to go to the outside in pursuit of justice and adventure isn't unique as a multitude of previous Iron Fists have done this including the very first one, many villainous or rogue factions of K'un-Lun hate the fact their treasured chi and sacred city protector status as the Iron Fist belongs to some irresponsible foreign outworlder and how his tendency to leave K'un-Lun unprotected to go and play a superhero in America often causes catastrophe to the ancient city, which Danny himself admits is a valid complaint.
  • Mystical High Collar: Wore one until recently.
  • Power Glows: The power of the Iron Fist causes much glowing.
  • Rogues' Gallery Transplant: One of Danny's early enemies was Sabretooth. As in "Wolverine's arch-nemesis, Sabretooth".
  • Shotgun Wedding: Very narrowly averted — Misty Knight goes to tell Danny she's pregnant, but he proposes marriage to her before she can tell him. She then checks to make sure he hadn't already worked it out.
  • Single-Power Superheroes: At least initially, his only power was "punch stuff." Since obtaining the Book of the Iron Fist, he's learned a Jedi Mind Trick, and it turns out that Iron Fists can empower any projectiles.
  • Stay in the Kitchen: Initially held this attitude, since that was how it was in K'un-Lun, being reluctant to even take Colleen on in a training match (even training matches against women in K'un-Lun held sentence of death-by-exile or Death of Personality). He soon grew out of it.
  • Training from Hell: How Danny was trained. Seems to be Lei Kung the Thunderer's standard MO.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: Danny often does wear a shirt, but a lot of the time it either gets destroyed, discarded, or had a plunging neckline that exposed his chest, tattoo, and abs.
  • Warrior Prince: A fact that does not come up much, but Danny is a member of the K'un-Lun Royal Family (due to his father being adopted into the family, even being made the heir to the throne at one point). Danny was even offered the position of Yu-Ti at one point due to this (tho he refused).

    Lin Lie

Lin Lie

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/iron_fist_ii.jpg
Click here to see as Sword Master

Alter Ego: Lin Lie

Notable Aliases: Sword Master

First Appearance: Warriors of Three Sovereigns #1 (May, 2018)

After receiving an ancient divine sword from his archaeologist father, Lin Lie, the last living descendant of the mythological hero Fu Xi, took up the family duty of ensuring that Chiyou, The God of War, remains sealed away. But during a battle with a malevolent Kumiho, Lin's sacred blade was destroyed. The jagged shards of the sword embedded themselves into the flesh of his arms as he plummeted to his demise.

But in a sudden act of Divine Intervention, Shao-Lao the Undying saved Lin from certain death. After washing up on the shores of K'un-Lun with Shao-Lao's chi now coursing through his body, Lin became the new Iron Fist and set out on a quest to retrieve the remaining pieces of his old sword before they fall into demonic hands.

See Sword Master for his solo series.

  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: In contrast to Danny, who was generally a chill guy to be around, Lin is both stubborn and abrasive as the new Iron Fist. Violently rejecting Danny's offer to help him better control Shao-Lao's chi even though it's obvious he's struggling with wielding it.
  • Bash Brothers: Lie and Shang-Chi.
  • Canon Character All Along: The new Iron Fist is eventually revealed to be Lin Lie, better known as Sword Master, last seen losing his sword in The Death of Doctor Strange event
  • Cool Sword: The sword of Fu Xi, one of three magical weapons given to three tribes to fight Chiyou, the God of War.
  • Disappeared Dad: Lin Lie's father went missing some time ago.
  • Handicapped Badass: Some of the broken shards of Lin's divine sword became embedded into the flesh of his arms, leaving him in a perpetual state of agony and discomfort. But the pain is fortunately not enough to deter his hand-to-hand combat skills.
  • Heroic Lineage: He's a descendant of the god Fu Xi.
  • How Do I Shot Web?: Lin wasn't all that good at wielding the Sword of Fu Xi until he trained under Shang-Chi to become a more adept swordsman. He's also thrown into a similar situation yet again after he is chosen to become the new Iron Fist following the destruction of his sword.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: Used to wear a red scarf as part of his getup as Sword Master.
  • The Poorly Chosen One: Unlike previous Iron Fists, who had to earn the right to wield the chi of Shao-Lao the Undying, the injured Lin Lie was practically chosen out of the blue by Shao-Lao to become Iron Fist via Divine Intervention. As a result, he has no proper qualifications and initially lacks both the knowledge and discipline to use the Fist to its fullest potential. To make matters worse, the sword shards embedded in Lin's arms cause him agony and interfere with the flow of his chi, making Lin an even bigger Sketchy Successor to Danny.

Historical Iron Fists

    Fan Fei

Fan Fei

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/avengers_vol_8_13_textless.jpg

Alter Ego: Fan Fei

First Appearance: Marvel Legacy #1 (November, 2017)

Born one million years ago in the sacred city of K'un-Lun, Fan Fei was the first person ever to defeat the dragon Shou-Lao and win the power of the Iron Fist.

  • Alliterative Name: Fan Fei.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Exiled from K'un L'un for teaching proto-humans how to fight, K'un L'un style - and worse, she was Forced to Watch them being fed to Shou-Lao, precipitating her blowing out the back of the dragon's head with a single punch.
  • The Dragonslayer: She was the very first person that managed to kill the "undying" Shou-Lao.
  • Irony: Short of being an outsider like Orson, Danny, or Gale, the first Iron Fist committed every great offense her successors would be discouraged from even thinking about including leaving K'un L'un to share their martial art secrets for the benefit of those outside of it.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: She's the tomboy in comparison to Lady Phoenix.

    Quan Yaozu

Quan Yaozu

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/980047_quanyaozu3.jpg

Alter Ego: Quan Yaozu

First Appearance: The Immortal Iron Fist #22 (March, 2009)

One of the many bearers of the mantle of the Iron Fist, Quan Yaozu was one of the first-ever Iron Fists, and the first to defeat Shou-Lao the Undying and earn its Chi.

  • Retcon: He was claimed to be the first Iron Fist to defeat Shou-Lao, though the prehistoric Fan Fei disproved that notion years later. Though, again, the Book of the Iron Fist isn't always totally reliable - and Fan Fei understandably flipped the bird to K'un L'un after they literally fed her students to Shou-Lao, leading to the first death of the dragon.

    Li Park

Li Park

Alter Ego: Li Park

First Appearance: Immortal Iron Fist #24

One of the many bearers of the mantle of the Iron Fist, Li Park was the Iron Fist of circa 730 A.D. A pacifist who earned the mantle of the Iron Fist, Li Park became a reluctant hero. The tribe of people he rescued saved K'un-Lun by repopulating the ancient city.

    Gale

Gale

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/iron_fist_atlantean_earth_616_from_king_thor_vol_1_4_001.jpg

Alter Ego: Princess Gale

First Appearance: Marvel Legacy vol 2. #7 (July, 2016)

One of the many bearers of the mantle of the Iron Fist, Gale was an Atlantean Princess who operated as Iron Fist during the 11th century.

  • Famous Ancestor: Being a member of the Atlantis Royal family makes her a distant ancestor of Namor.
  • Pretty Princess Powerhouse: Princess of Atlantis and member of Thor's 1,000 AD Avengers.
  • Navel-Deep Neckline: Her outfit is open in such a way as to expose her cleavage and midriff and proudly displays the Dragon Tattoo.
  • Token Minority: The only known Atlantean to use the Iron Fist title.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/2319418_burning002.jpg

Alter Ego: Fongji Wu

First Appearance: New Avengers Vol 2 #26 (July, 2012)

One of the many bearers of the mantle of the Iron Fist, Fongji was brought to K'un-Lun by her mother after the last pilgrimage to Earth ended and was taken in by Yu Ti.

  • But Now I Must Go: She just disappeared after merging with the Phoenix Force.
  • Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: A human girl with the Iron Fist beats up and gains the power of a cosmic entity.
  • Fiery Redhead: While outwardly very stoic, when she does get angry, there tends to be actual fire.
  • Meaningful Name: Fongji means bird of fire. Fitting for a host of the Phoenix Force.
  • Ninja Pirate Zombie Robot: She gains the Iron Fist and the Phoenix Force, after being trained by Lei-Kung the Thunderer and Leonardo da Vinci.
  • Redhead In Green: Just like other wielders of the Phoenix Force, she's a redhead who wears the signature green Iron Fist outfit.
  • Retcon: The Brubaker/Fraction run established there was only one female Iron Fist before Danny, and that was Wu Ao-Shi. In 2012, New Avengers has Fongji show up. Then again, this makes a little more sense than you might think - the Book of the Iron Fist isn't totally reliable, and for various reasons, she's the Iron Fist that they really don't want to talk about.
  • The Quiet One: Said very little, so much so that her mentors actually thought she was mute. Even when it turns out she can speak, she doesn't say much.

    Wu Ao-Shi

Wu Ao-Shi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/100032_28377_wu_ao_shi.jpg

One of the many bearers of the mantle of the Iron Fist, Wu Ao-Shi was the Iron Fist of the 16th century, living from 1517 to 1550. Also known as the Pirate Queen of Pinghai Bay circa 1545.

  • Action Girl: As Iron Fist, a crime and evil fighting warrior, this is expected.
  • Bald Mystic: She was shaved completely bald during her training to be Iron Fist invoking Shaolin monks and the practice of tonsure.
  • Happily Married: To her husband a fisherman, her story is focused on their romance.
  • Pirate Girl: Became a Pirate Queen later in life.
  • The Smurfette Principle: Until the introduction of Fan Fei, who lived thousands of years earlier, she was the only known female Iron Fist. Other females were revealed later.

    Bei Bang-Wen

Bei Bang-Wen

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/2024263_untitled.png

Alter Ego: Bei Bang-Wen

First Appearance: Immortal Iron Fist #3 (March, 2007)

One of the many bearers of the mantle of the Iron Fist, Bei Bang-Wen was the Iron Fist of the 19th century, active during at least 1860. He was known for using the chi of Shou-Lao the Undying to improve his own intellect, instead of just calling for it during combat.

    Kwai Jun-Fan

Kwai Jun-Fan

Alter Ego: Orson Randall

First Appearance: Immortal Iron Fist #1 (January, 2007)

One of the many bearers of the mantle of the Iron Fist, Orson Randall was the Iron Fist of the 20th century, and the Iron Fist immediately preceding Danny Rand. He fought during the First World War but the horrors he witnessed made him turn to opium to cope.

  • Gun Fu: Danny initially begrudges Orson for using firearms in combat: "You learned your kung fu from Lei Kung and Smith & Wesson?"
  • Parental Substitute: To Wendell Rand, even leaving him his family fortune.
  • Passing the Torch: Orson passed the Iron Fist title to Danny.
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: He fought in World War I, where his experiences broke him.
  • Superhero Packing Heat: Orson Randall used guns to compensate for the use of chi. He actually based this on a similar technique used by his predecessor, Wu Ao-Shi, which used a bow and arrow.

Earning the right to face Shou-Lao and become the Iron Fist, he instead decided to return to Earth.

An immortal dragon whose heart grants people the power of the Iron Fist. She has been defeated and reborn 66 times so far.

  • Our Dragons Are Different: For one thing, that stuff about the "molten heart"? Not an exaggeration.
  • Resurrective Immortality: Whenever he's killed he eventually revives.

    Yu-Ti

Nu-An

Notable Aliases: August Personage in Jade

First Appearance: Marvel Premier #16 (July, 1974)

  • Evil Uncle: Slightly, for Danny, since he holds a grudge against Danny's father.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Despite having helped practically raise Danny, he's suspicious of him. Eventually, he admits this was quite stupid of him.
  • It's Personal: While he didn't approve of Danny dedicating himself to gaining the Iron Fist for the sake of vengeance, or his leaving K'un-Lun, he still let him go after Harold Meachum, because the asshole killed his brother.
  • The Mentor: One of Danny's teachers in K'un-Lun.

  • Killed Offscreen: She's killed at the start of Iron Fist: Heart of the Dragon alongside the dragon of her city.
  • Ms Fan Service: Look at her.
  • Secret Legacy: And a Deceptive Legacy, in that her father actively concealed tales of her mother's heroism and the Tiger's Beautiful Daughter title, instead claiming he was a great warrior himself.
  • Spirit Advisor: The battle when Li Hua was still a baby shattered Tiger Island’s old traditions and meant that the role of champion was no longer passed down in the same way it was for the other cities. So her dead mother taught her to fight in dreams.
  • Stripperiffic: Only covers herself with strategically placed belts, lots of belts. And a loincloth.
  • Too Many Belts: Lots of belts are the only clothes she wears while fighting. She's fully clothed every other time.

  • An Arm and a Leg: He was saved by nearby villagers from a blizzard. However, the frost got to both of his legs and they had to be amputated.
  • Death Seeker: He becomes one when he meets Iron Fist face-to-face. Harold designed a series of traps specifically because he learned that Danny knew that was alive and would seek vengeance against him. But after Iron Fist bypassed his traps he comes to believe that he deserves to die and accepts his fate, to the point where he shoots at Iron Fist for changing his mind and leaving.
  • Didn't Think This Through: You killed a woman's husband right in front of her and thought that she would want anything to do with you, man? Really?
  • Evil Cripple: He killed Wendell Rand in a bid to take his company and his wife. Then he lost his legs to a blizzard.
  • Heel Realization: By the time Iron Fist got to him, Harold had come to the conclusion that he deserved to die for ruining Danny's life.
  • Good Hair, Evil Hair: Just look at that mustache.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: He was killed not by Danny, but instead the Ninja. When the old man pulled a gun on Danny for refusing to kill him, the Ninja shuriken'd his hand and ran him through with his sword.
  • Sanity Slippage: By his own confession, the knowledge that Danny was alive and would soon seek vengeance against him took a toll on his mind over the years. Which led to him spending a fortune on death traps and assassins to stave off Iron Fist in the future.

  • Revenge Before Reason: Joy's desire for revenge was so bad she actually tried to hire a gangster to kill him when the man had just tried to kill her. This weirded the man out so much he left, telling Joy if she wanted to do it so bad, she could do it herself.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Once she finally gets it through her head that Danny didn't kill her father, she mellows out a lot.
  • You Killed My Father: Knowing Iron Fist wanted her father dead, if not why, she walks in on her father's corpse as Iron Fist's walking out the room and comes to a wrong but not unreasonable assumption. Dany does try explaining things to her, but she's in no mood to listen.

  • Killed Off for Real: Namor tearing his head off seems to have been the end of him.

  • Rogues' Gallery Transplant: His final story arc and death was against Namor of all people (who Khan only went after because he was pissed off that the Sub-Mariner had saved Danny from the H'ylthri).

  • The Dragon: Just a minion for Master Khan.
  • No Name Given: Just.. "Ninja".
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: Trying to lay siege to K'un-Lun was something of a mistake. He wound up being beaten up by Yu-Ti and sealed in the Book of Many Things for centuries. He's freed when the book is destroyed in a fire.
  • Transformation of the Possessed: Whenever he took over Lee Wing, the man gained the ninja's garb.

Left with a grudge against Rand, Davos would go on to become one of the main enemies of Danny Rand, hoping to gain the powers of the Iron Fist.

  • Antagonistic Offspring: Resentment towards his father is the reason he became Danny's enemy.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: His battle against Prince of Orphans was completely one-sided against him, all as payback for the way he fought against Tiger's Beautiful Daughter.
  • Debt Detester: Briefly works for Joyce on coming to the states. He hates it, and as soon as his obligations are fulfilled he splits.
  • Diabolus ex Nihilo: Initially, from Danny's point of view. As he's minding his own business, this guy would show up out of nowhere, attack him, steal some of his chi and fade into the night.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: Has a nasty scar across the left side of his face, from his own fight with Shao-Lao.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Through character development, he eventually manages to accept that he's been manipulated, and as an extension he's not as smart and skilled as he sees himself as, eventually helping the other Immortal Weapons fight off Xao's forces and helping Kun-L'un rebuild after the Army of Thunder's revolution.
  • Megaton Punch: He may not be the Iron Fist, but he's still got a punch on him like a thing like unto iron. When coming to get Ward Meachum, the man's goons assure him the barrier they've set up could hold off a tank. Davos then smashes through the barrier in an instant.
