YMMV / Iron Fist

  • Broken Base: Danny's race has been a hot-topic for some time, particularly in the idea of adapting the comics into a show, as Marvel did in 2017. Some think it doesn't matter in the slightest, while others are upset that he plays the Mighty Whitey trope straightnote , and a third group thinks choosing an Asian actor would then play to All Asians Know Martial Arts. Finn Jones (Loras Tyrell from Game of Thrones) being confirmed to have been cast as Danny only fueled the debate even more, as there had been a campaign beforehand for Marvel to cast an Asian or half-Asian actor.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Bride of Nine Spiders' chest contains a cloud of killer arachnids.
  • Older Than They Think: Iron Fist was actually the second Marvel hero created to capitalize on the martial arts craze of the '70s. The first one, Shang-Chi, was authentically Asian and, ironically, his book Master of Kung Fu was much more popular (as he was basically an Expy of Bruce Lee starring in a licensed continuation of Sax Rohmer's Fu Manchu stories). Iron Fist struggled with cancellation until it was decided to pair Danny Rand with Luke Cage, at which point the two '70s fad characters exploded in popularity while Shang-Chi faded into relative obscurity.
  • Tear Jerker: How Fat Cobra became an Immortal Weapon: Over his unnaturally long life, he sired thousands of bastard children; each with great talent and skill for combat, and each wanting blood for their abandonment. Fat Cobra spent years defending himself from sudden attacks, killing them all, until there were none left to fight.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Danny and Misty having a child together after the Immortal series would've made for interesting stories about both characters, but to the disappointment of many, the pregnancy was Retconned as false and the two separated. This was apparently because editors didn't want Misty unhealthily crimefighting while pregnant, but this concern rings hollow when you realize that years later Jessica Drew did exactly that without any consequences.
  • Values Resonance: Despite Iron Fist being a Mighty Whitey, the comic was quite progressive in other ways: it actually had the first interracial romance between mainstream superheroes, with Danny Rand and love interest Misty Knight sharing a kiss in 1977. It was also unique in its depiction of male Danny being extremely close friends with female Colleen Wing without them being either romantic partners or relatives, something that was very unusual in the The '70s.
