Akane Class

A female-only tribe of shinobi residing in a secluded village.
    General
  • Age-Inappropriate Dress: All the students are around their teens, some of them in their early teens, but plenty of them wear Stripperiffic outfits that would fit better for adult kunoichi.
  • Animal Theme Naming: Each team is representative of one of the twelve animals found on the Chinese Zodiac.
  • Childhood Friends: Everyone in the Akane Class sans Rindou is essentially this to each other for the most part, as they have all been together since their early childhood, even before forming their respective teams.
  • Demonization: Justified. The Akane Class teaches their students that men are dangerous. This is actually a lie made in an effort to prevent the shinobi lifestyle's extinction back when the Akane and Aoi Classes used to be a single entity, after an alarming number of students began abandoning their training and coupled off with each other. During the final chapter's epilogue, it's revealed that the rule was abolished by both classes and have gradually began allowing their students to interact with each other.
  • Floral Theme Naming: The kanji for each character's name translates to either flower, a plant, or something connected to either.
  • Lady Land: The Akane Class is an all-female village.
  • One Name Only: Every student is addressed only by their given name and honorific if applicable. Their last names are unknown to the readers.
  • Martial Artists Are Always Barefoot: Of the thirty eight characters, eight of them (Sazanka, Higiri, Hasu, Uikyou, Hinagiku, Kibushi, Benisumomo, and Touwata) wear toeless/heeless torenkas or socks. One (Shion) wears only footwraps. And three (Itadori, Oniyuri, and Shakuyaku) go completely barefoot.
  • Power Trio: Each team is normally comprised of three students, either all being upperclassmen, lowerclassmen, or a mix of both. The exception to this is Teams Dog and Snake, with four and two members respectively.
  • Stripperiffic: As is common for fictional kunoichi, a decent number of the students have outfits that expose large amounts of skin, some exposing their midriffs or even engaging in Navel-Deep Neckline. A bit odd given how the ones wearing such exposing outfits are in their early-to-late teens.
  • Two-Teacher School: Hana and Konoha are the only teachers for the Akane Class.

Teachers:

    Hana

Voiced by: Yumi Uchiyama (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hana_3.png
The head of the Akane Class, and teacher of the older students.
  • Animal Motif: Hana is often associated with snakes, being able to control all different sizes of them. Additionally, she owns a fair few of them.
  • Badass Teacher: As shown in the opening, Hana was able to take on at least eight of the older students singlehandedly and wipe the floor with them with minimal effort in a matter of seconds.
  • Berserk Button: Do not underestimate men in any capacity.
  • Floral Theme Naming: Hana (ハナ) translates into "flower". The term is also used to refer to flower viewing, particularly with cherry and plum blossoms.
  • Handicapped Badass: She suffers from a bad hip, and while she still can perform ninjutsu without issue, it also causes her pain in the most inopportune moments.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • Before the Akane and Aoi Classes were separated, Hana had someone she fancied, even drawing him on a scroll before scribbling it out and hiding it out of embarrassment.
    • Chapter 61 reveals that she was wishing for Tsubaki to break the rule against interacting with men the whole time, hoping that she could do what Hana herself couldn't before. Additionally, she also revealed that she never truly supported this rule, but her position as the Akane Class's matriarch more or less bound her to enforce it.
  • Hypocrite:
    • Justified. Hana forbids her students from entering the onsen at certain times, but she herself breaks this rule all the time due to suffering from a bad hip, which the water helps alleviate the pain.
    • Despite forbidding her students from interacting with men, Hana communicates with her Aoi Class counterpart in Chapter 35.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: She constantly has to tell her students that men are dangerous, knowing full well that what she tells them is a lie. When confronted by Tsubaki, Hana explains that had men and women continued to live together as they did in the past, they would continue to elope and abandon their ninja heritage, risking its extinction.
  • Iron Lady: As the head of the Akane Class, Hana presents herself as such. She's composed, Stoic, and stern, but she greatly cares for her students.
  • Not So Above It All: Though displeased about the Attractiveness Jutsu becoming widespread, Hana wasn't above participating in it herself in order to cheer up a dejected Tsubaki.
  • Oh, Crap!: Hana has two of these moments:
    • She unwittingly reveals the "men are dangerous" rule is a lie in front of Tsubaki (disguised as Konoha) in Chapter 7. The moment Tsubaki's disguise fails was the moment she realizes she fucked up big time.
    • In Chapter 29, hearing from Konoha that she had Sazanka and Asagao clean the storage room initially wasn't an issue... until she remembered that a scroll labeled "MAN" was stored there.
  • Passing the Torch: Hana reveals in the anime's final episode that she's considering making Tsubaki her successor as leader of the Akane Class once she steps down. However, the latter doesn't know this.
  • Scare 'Em Straight: This is Hana's most effective method to deal with the students whenever they're caught looking down on or making fun of men instead of fearing them as she's constantly reminded them. This method is so effective that even the most confident students, such as Benisumomo or Hinagiku, are scared of her.
  • Secret-Keeper: As the head of the Akane Class, Hana knows the truth about men and has to constantly maintain the lie that they are dangerous. Later Averted in Chapter 61, as she's no longer this once she decides to come clean with the Akane Class.
  • Stern Teacher: Though she cares for her students, Hana also holds them to high expectations, especially Tsubaki. Additionally, she will not hesitate to incur her wrath if they step out of line.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Hana gets this reaction from Tsubaki after discovering she's been lying to the entire class about men being dangerous all this time. Needless to say, the latter did not take it well:
Tsubaki: W-We think that men are scary, and that in other villages, we live with them grudgingly because it's just how things are... Why lie to us like that?!

    Konoha

Voiced by: Mao Ichimichi (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/konoha_4.png
Hana's counterpart, as well as the teacher of the younger students.
  • Floral Theme Naming: Konoha (コノハ) translates into "leaves", befitting of her abilities.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite her cold demeanor, Konoha deeply cherishes her students. She even has a secret room dedicated to the gifts they give her.
  • Not So Above It All: Despite her stern and stoic personality, Konoha has a moment or two where she loosens up a bit:
    • She pesters Hana to show her the scroll she retrieved from Tsubaki in Chapter 29.
    • She jokingly ribs Hana in Chapter 35 for using the onsen during times her students are not allowed to.
  • Number Two: As the only other teacher in the Akane Class, Konoha serves as this to Hana.
  • Petal Power: Konoha's technique, "Dancing Leaves Jutsu", allows her to manipulate the movement of leaves to suit her needs, such as blinding or restraining her target(s). If the said target comes into contact with even just one leaf, it is impossible to escape from them unless Konoha allows it.
  • Secret-Keeper: She's also in on the truth about the Akane and Aoi Classes. She no longer is this in Chapter 61 after Hana reveals the truth to the Akane Class.
  • Stern Teacher: Though she does care about and cherish her students, Konoha is still a teacher nonetheless, and will hand out punishment among them when necessary.
  • The Stoic: Konoha is seen as stern, cold, and indifferent, almost never smiling. However, she's not like this out of malice, it's simply who she is as a person.

Students:

Team Dog

    Tsubaki

Voiced by: Yuko Natsuyoshi (Japanese), Ayane Sakura (Collaborative PV)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tsubaki_89.png
The titular character and protagonist. She's the Akane Class's brightest pupil and the leader of Team Dog, with a nagging curiosity towards men she must keep hidden.
  • 10-Minute Retirement: In Chapters 59 and 60, Tsubaki briefly gives up her desire to meet the man she's been writing to out of guilt and shame for unwittingly hurting Sazanka and her feelings. It's not until Sazanka herself chooses to help her, though she makes it clear she still doesn't forgive her because of her actions. They later fully reconcile in Chapter 61.
  • The Ace: She's the top student amongst the Akane Class, with very few being able to be considered her equal in skill.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Sazanka always refers to Tsubaki as “Nee-sama”. This is briefly abandoned in Chapter 60 when Sazanka effectively cuts ties with Tsubaki after feeling betrayed in Chapter 59, before going back to it after coming to terms with what's going on with her.
  • Berserk Button: Trying to harm or mess with her teammates is a surefire way to seriously piss her off.
  • Character Title: In The Heart of Kunoichi Tsubaki.
  • Didn't Think This Through:
    • Though she did try to put a stop to it, it was Tsubaki's fault the Attractiveness Jutsu spread to the other students. Granted, Asagao and Sazanka were the ones that actually allowed it to spread, but her own insistence on becoming good at performing it superseded her own better judgment, not taking into account the consequences until the situation got worse.
    • Tsubaki suggested to Sumire in Chapter 43 to put herself in Azami and Tanpopo's shoes in order to properly understand them. This became her undoing as she failed to take into account that Sumire sometimes takes things almost too seriously, complete with adopting her teammates' unkempt appearances and slang speech.
    • Tsubaki vehemently refused to join her teammates to go see a ghost near a hokoranote  in Chapter 48. However, her curiosity about men got the better of her when Asagao and Sazanka offhandedly mention that said ghost had a male figure.
Tsubaki (internally): Once I heard it was the ghost of a man, before I knew it, I was already following along... I'm such an idiooot...
    • Per her own admission, Tsubaki's excitement over meeting the man she's been writing to left her blind to how it was affecting her, as well as those around her - especially Sazanka. It wasn't until the damage to their relationship was done did she finally realize either point.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Tsubaki's hardheadedness and excellent leadership skills makes her the Melancholic of Team Dog.
  • Floral Theme Naming: Tsubaki (ツバキ) refers to the Camellia japonica, or the Japanese camellia. This forms the basis between her and Sazanka's sisterly relationship, as their names both refer to flowers of the same family.
  • Friendly Rivalry: She and Benisumomo are this to each other as their skills put both of them on equal footing. Still, they're both good friends such that Benisumomo can turn to Tsubaki for help when she needs it, such as finding medicine for Touwata.
  • Heroic BSoD: Played for Laughs. When she learns the Akane and Aoi Classes used to mingle with each other in the past, she's completely mindblown.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • The very mention of men throws her off-balance since she's so curious about them.
    • She doesn't handle scary things very well, especially anything that has to do with ghosts.
    • When it comes to gambling and bets, Tsubaki's a complete pushover.
    • Even though she's willingly agreed to become Hana's Secret-Keeper, deep down Tsubaki wants to tell everyone the truth about men.
  • Jack of All Trades: Unlike other characters, there isn't one specific technique that Tsubaki's most proficient in, but rather she's well-rounded in multiple.
  • The Leader: She serves as the leader of Team Dog.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: In Chapter 59, Benisumomo basically spells it out for Tsubaki that Sazanka genuinely loves her, but her feelings went over her head because she was so fixated on meeting a man. When Tsubaki finally realizes that not only had Sazanka harbored these feelings since they became friends, but also that she's been unwittingly hurting her all this time for not realizing sooner, she is completely racked with guilt to the point where she chooses to discard her obsession:
Tsubaki: All this time... all this time... I've been making you suffer because of that...
  • Not So Above It All: While she clearly wishes to uphold the rules of the class, as Konoha notes, Tsubaki is also at that age where she would become curious about men. More often than not, this curiosity has gotten the better of her.
  • Obliviously Beautiful: According to Rindou, Tsubaki is appealing and attractive enough that she wouldn't need to use the "Attractiveness Jutsu".
  • Secret-Keeper: Combined with Keeping Secrets Sucks:
    • After Hana accidentally revealed the "men are dangerous" rule was a lie in front of Tsubaki, the former chooses to tell the truth to her in Chapter 8 after the latter and is sworn into secrecy afterward. Her role as this becomes irrelevant in Chapter 61 once Hana decides to come clean with the class and reveal the truth.
    • Chapter 55 reveals that Tsubaki is somewhat conflicted on the matter. While she has no problem with complying with Hana's instructions, she admits she's never taken into account her own feelings nor questioned her role in this. However, when confronted with the idea of revealing the truth, Tsubaki realizes she wants to do exactly that.
  • Teacher's Pet: Played With. Tsubaki may well be a stickler to the rules, and as the class's top student, she is effectively the middle ground between the students and the teachers, the latter of whom have full confidence in her. However, unlike the trope, Tsubaki isn't resented for this and has the admiration of her fellow students as a result.
  • Team Mom: She acts as this to the other members of Team Dog, such as helping Rindou get acclimated to the village when she first transfers to the Akane Class or scolding Asagao and Sazanka when they get into trouble time and time again.
  • What Is This Thing You Call "Love"?: She has no concept of the idea of love nor anything related to the word as a result of her upbringing. When she learns about it for the first time, it leaves her even more confused.

    Sazanka

Voiced by: Miyari Nemoto (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sazanka.png
The short-statured and short-tempered second member of Team Dog, with an obsessive admiration for Tsubaki.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Before Team Dog's formation, Sazanka was an aloof and lonely problem child, pulling pranks on her classmates, resulting in being ostracized and everyone keeping their distance from her. This plus her inability to connect to others furthered the divide between her and everyone else, hence why she initially preferred being alone. This changed when she and Tsubaki became friends.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: This basically sums up why Sazanka admires Tsubaki so much. Tsubaki was the only one that took the effort to understand and get close to her when others refused to, as well as save her from loneliness. Simply put, Tsubaki was her first friend in the entire class.
    • Later Played for Drama in Chapter 59, when it turns out that her admiration for Tsubaki was genuine love. She was the only one who figured out that the constant onsen trips in Chapter 58 were not the reason for Tsubaki's change in behavior. After teaming up with Benisumomo and learning that Tsubaki planned to meet a man, Sazanka tried to fool herself into believing it was so Tsubaki can beat him up. Upon seeing that Tsubaki was not doing this, she tearfully ran off feeling betrayed because she was kept in the dark by someone she considered her sister.
  • Berserk Button: Anyone getting close to Tsubaki that's not her is a surefire way to piss her off.
  • Bratty Half-Pint: Among the physically smallest of the class and bratty to no end, an aspect that alienated her peers when she was younger. She's also very prone to picking fights and getting in trouble.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Played for Laughs. Whenever Tsubaki is seen getting along with the other girls, she gets really jealous. It got to the point where Sazanka was mentioned to have almost gotten into a duel with Mokuren in Chapter 15 merely because they were getting along.
  • Cute Little Fangs: Sazanka is sometimes depicted with these, though when she gets angry or feisty, they can become something akin to large shark teeth.
  • A Day in the Spotlight: Chapter 18 serves as this for her, establishing how not only Team Dog formed, but also how she and Tsubaki developed a sister-like relationship.
  • Everyone Has Standards: When it comes to pranking others, it will only be of her own volition. Being used by someone to mess with her teammates is something she won't stand for, such as when she double-crossed Hinagiku in Chapter 17 for trying to use her to get to unmask Rindou.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: Her red, bullseye-looking eyes really stand out next to the rest of the cast.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Sazanka's short-temper, stubbornness, and downright bratty behavior makes her the Choleric of Team Dog.
  • Floral Theme Naming:
    • Sazanka (サザンカ) refers to the Camellia sasanqua, or the Sasanqua camellia. This forms the basis between her and Tsubaki's sisterly relationship, as their names both refer to flowers of the same family.
    • Additionally, Sazanka's name also comes from the Japanese term for the flower meaning "plum-flowered tea", as they do not consider the Camellia sasanqua a true Camellia flower.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: While she's no longer the outcast she once was and gets along with others, for the most part, Sazanka's attitude and feisty personality are something left to be desired.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Sazanka is extremely short-tempered, bratty, and quick to anger, except when she's around Tsubaki.
  • Hidden Depths: She's shy around strangers, hence why she initially gave Rindou the cold shoulder when she first joined Team Dog.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She's prickly, clingy, and seemingly unfriendly, but she will do the right thing when it comes down to it.
  • Meaningful Appearance: Her current outfit draws greatly on that of Tsubaki's but with her own spin on it, signifying the former's admiration for her. Later on, she receives a hair ribbon from Asagao in Chapter 28, to which she fashions her hair to sport a ponytail similar to Tsubaki's.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: A lot of scenes show her constantly clinging to Tsubaki.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: She's the shortest of Team Dog and one of the shortest in the entire clan, but her skills make up for this.
  • Playing with Fire: She's quite proficient in using Fire-Style Jutsu.
  • The Prankster: She is known for pranking others. Prior to joining Team Dog, this was out of hostility, but now it's more for lighthearted fun.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds:
    • With Asagao. Either they’re the best of friends or at each other’s throats. There is no middle ground.
    • Also with Housenka. They are able to find common ground and get along at times, but most of the time, their interactions involve arguing with each other.

    Asagao

Voiced by: Sayumi Suzushiro (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/asagao.png
The ditzy, gluttonous third member of Team Dog.
  • Attack! Attack! Attack!: As Tsubaki points out in Chapter 30, Asagao only relies on straightforward, frontal attacks.
  • Big Eater: She's one hell of a glutton, constantly thinking about food and dislikes being withheld from such. She's also able to eat almost double what the average student does. However, her eating habits have gotten to the point where sometimes she'll be caught sleep-eating, nor will she even notice she's eating something as Chapter 49 showed.
  • Dumb Blonde: Has blonde hair, and a head hollow as a coconut.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Asagao's cheerfulness, gluttony, and dim-wittedness makes her the Sanguine of Team Dog.
  • Floral Theme Naming: Asagao (アサガオ) refers to the Ipomoea nil, or the Japanese morning glory.
  • Master of None: There isn't a single technique that Asagao is actually good at.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: Really stands out with this, especially among the younger students no less. Being tall, busty and tanned in a village full of average-sized, pale, not especially well-endowed girls.
  • Out of Focus: Asagao gets the least amount of focus compared to the rest of Team Dog. Whatever focus she does get, it mainly revolves around food.
  • Through Her Stomach: Pretty much the best way to convince her to do something is by bribing her with food, especially meat.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Sazanka. Either they’re the best of friends or at each other’s throats. There is no middle ground.
  • Younger Than They Look: While her Non-Standard Character Design gives off the idea she may be an older character, the fact she attends Konoha's classes with the younger students indicates she's actually younger than the likes of Tsubaki and Benisumomo for example, despite being taller and bustier than either of them.

    Rindou

Voiced by: Konomi Kohara (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rindou_1.png
Click here to see her unmasked
A transfer student from a co-ed village, who later joins Team Dog as their fourth member.

  • Cool Mask: Rindou was given a kitsune mask when she was little by the head of her previous village to account for her shyness. When she transfers to the Akane Class, Rindou opts to wear it on the side instead in order to gradually get used to showing her face.
  • Expository Pronoun: Rindou uses the male-oriented word "boku" to refer to herself, a habit she held onto due to her upbringing in her previous village.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Rindou's gentle and shy personality makes her the Phlegmatic of Team Dog.
  • Floral Theme Naming: Rindou (リンドウ) refers to the Gentiana scabra, or the Japanese gentian. Amusingly, the flower is also referred to as the "Rindou Flower".
  • Fortune Teller: Chapter 47 reveals Rindou was taught how to read fortunes in her previous village, with results that technically come true, such as:
    • Food will come Asagao's way (A wild bird)
    • Sazanka's training will bear no fruit (She fails to catch the bird as a result of her ditching earlier in the chapter)
    • Tsubaki will meet a man (The bird was male)
    • Something painful was bound to happen (Rindou gets sick eating a spoiled manju).
  • New Transfer Student: She is the newest addition to the Akane Class, joining the class in Chapter 11 and becoming a member of Team Dog in Chapter 12.
  • Raised as the Opposite Gender: Before transferring to the Akane Class, Rindou was raised as a boy by the head of her previous village to make up for their low male population. When this didn't work, she was then raised as a girl before being transferred.
  • Secret-Keeper: Coming from a village where men and women are still integrated, Rindou is the only person in the Akane Class who has any knowledge about men. Like Tsubaki, she also has to keep this secret from the others.
  • Shrinking Violet: Rindou grew up extremely shy, especially when it comes to showing her face to others, hence why she was over-reliant on wearing her mask. After transferring to the Akane Class and becoming acclimated to her new environment, these feelings slowly fade.
  • Summon Magic: Rindou's technique, "Come Here Jutsu", allows her to summon anyone of her choice to her location. However, performing the technique uses a lot of her energy, rendering her able to only use it once before collapsing from exhaustion.
  • Terrible Artist: To say Rindou is terrible is a serious understatement. All of her attempts to draw anything come out to resemble giant ink smears. She's also oblivious to this and genuinely thinks her skills are good.

Team Rat

    Tachiaoi

Voiced by: Kana Ichinose (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tachiaoi.png
  • Be Yourself: After her attempts to mimic Tsubaki's leadership horribly backfire, Tachiaoi learns that she can't just imitate someone else's style and expect it to work for her; rather, she should just lead in a way she knows best.
  • The Chains of Commanding: Her clumsiness, unassertiveness, and tendency to just remediate between her teammates' contrasting personalities have led her to believe she's not cut out to be the leader of Team Rat.
  • Floral Theme Naming: Tachiaoi (タチアオイ) refers to the Alcea rosea, or the Hollyhock.
  • The Leader: She serves as the leader of Team Rat.
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: Though her build may imply otherwise, Tachiaoi's fairly strong physically, being able to match with that of Asagao or Dokudami.
  • Playing with Fire: She and Higuruma are both proficient with Fire-Style Jutsu.
  • Team Mom: Being the only upperclassman in charge of two underclassmen like Higuruma and Hagi essentially makes her this, having to mediate their views and reeling them in when needed.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: When her self-doubt reaches an all-time low after the team gets stuck in a cave during a downpour, both Higuruma and Hagi reassure Tachiaoi that she's their leader through and through.

    Higuruma

Voiced by: Mayu Mineda (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/higuruma.png
  • Color Motif: The yellow color of Higuruma's hair symbolizes her cheerful and optimistic personality.
  • Comically Missing the Point: This is often the result of her extreme optimism. For example, when a heavy downpour drenches the team in Chapter 14, the only thing Higuruma thinks of is that the rain will wash away their sweat.
  • The Ditz: Higuruma's the optimist of Team Rat, albeit too optimistic for her own good, to the point where erring on the side of caution is near non-existent for her.
  • Floral Theme Naming: Higuruma (ヒグルマ) refers to the Helianthus annuus, or the Sunflower.
  • Perpetual Smiler: Even when the worst has happened, Higuruma will be seen with a wide smile across her face.
  • Playing with Fire: She and Tachiaoi are both proficient with Fire-Style Jutsu.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Higuruma is the upbeat and optimistic red oni to Hagi's depressed and pessimistic blue oni.

    Hagi

Voiced by: Reina Kondo (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hagi.png
  • Color Motif: The grayish-blue color of Hagi's hair symbolizes her melancholic personality.
  • The Eeyore: Hagi is the pessimist of Team Rat, and just in general. Her paranoia is to an extreme where she fears that anything - even the most mundane of things - will result in death.
  • Floral Theme Naming: Hagi (ハギ) refers to the Lespedeza japonica, or the Japanese bush clover.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Hagi is the depressed and pessimistic blue oni to Higuruma's upbeat and optimistic red oni.

Team Ox

    Shion

Voiced by: Ikumi Hasegawa (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shion_0.png
  • Cool Big Sis: Shion serves as this to Ajisai, as her upperclassman, constantly doting on and spoiling her.
  • Floral Theme Naming: Shion (シオン) refers to the Aster tataricus, or the Tatarian aster.
  • Good Old Fisticuffs: This is Shion's preferred way of fighting, and for good reason. Episode 13 shows her in combat with the "Man", and she was able to land some serious blows.
  • The Leader: She serves as the leader of Team Ox.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Shion is blunt, straightforward, stubborn, and quick to jump to conclusions. But beneath all that, she is truly a kind girl, as seen in her interactions with Ajisai.

    Suzuran

Voiced by: Hikaru Tōno (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/suzuran.png
  • Foil: To Shion. While they're both upperclassmen who love pampering Ajisai, Shion is blunt and stubborn yet kind, whereas Suzuran is the calmer and mellower one of the two.
  • Floral Theme Naming: Suzuran (スズラン) refers to the Convallaria majalis, or the lily-of-the-valley.
  • Informed Ability: Both Played Straight and later Averted. The muneatenote  Suzuran wears implies that she possesses some skill in archery. However, since Team Ox's debutnote , neither the manga nor anime demonstrate this until Episode 13 and Chapter 54.
  • Onee-sama: Like Shion, Suzuran also dotes on and spoils Ajisai. However, she acts much more gently and motherly towards the latter.

    Ajisai

Voiced by: Aoi Koga (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ajisai_4.png
  • The Baby of the Bunch: As Shion and Suzuran's underclassman, Ajisai is this for Team Ox. However, this has the side effect of being treated like a child by them.
  • Floral Theme Naming: Ajisai (アジサイ) refers to the Hydrangea macrophylla, or the French hydrangea.
  • Moe: In-Universe, Ajisai is this to her teammates, Shion and Suzuran, who both acknowledge that the former is very cute. It is because of this that they are unable to resist spoiling or doting on her.
  • Spoiled Brat: Downplayed. While she is spoiled and pampered by her upperclassmen, Ajisai only acts as a brat because she wants to prove she's just as capable as they are. However, she's gotten too comfortable with their affections to turn them down.

Team Tiger

    Fuki

Voiced by: Mayu Minami (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fuki_5.png
  • Adaptation Personality Change: A minor example. In the manga, Fuki's seen as a stoic, no-nonsense individual who almost never smiles. While most of this is carried into the anime, she has been shown smiling far more often here than she ever has in the manga.
  • Animorphism: An anime-exclusive example, but she and her teammates can combine to form a tiger.
  • Floral Theme Naming: Fuki (フキ) refers to the Petasites japonicus, or the Japanese butterbur.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • Fuki's stoic persona can easily crumble with one thing: puns.
    • For all the grief they give her, Fuki does genuinely enjoy being in Itadori and Ume's company.
    • She used to be a bit of a crybaby when she was younger. What happened to cause such a shift in personality to become the person she is now is unknown.
  • The Leader: She serves as the leader of Team Tiger.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Fuki's the stoic and reserved blue oni to Itadori and Ume's childish and mischievous red oni.
  • Smart People Play Chess: Fuki enjoys playing Go with Tsuwabuki.
  • Wise Beyond Their Years: Fuki presents herself as more adult-like than her teammates, despite being in the same age group as them. Her teammates interpret this as her expressing superiority over them.

    Itadori

Voiced by: Ayaka Nanase (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/itadori_2.png
  • Animorphism: An anime-exclusive example, but she and her teammates can combine to form a tiger.
  • Distinguishing Mark: Her defining physical trait is the giant X-shaped scar on her forehead. Itadori received this scar when she hit her head on a rock after trying to save a falling Ume from a tree.
  • Flash Step: Itadori's technique, "Swift Foot Jutsu" gives her a quick burst of speed.
  • Floral Theme Naming: Itadori (イタドリ) refers to the Reynoutria japonica, or the Japanese knotweed.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: She may be one of the tiniest of the Akane Class, but she's able to deliver quite a nasty punch. Poor Hinagiku learned this the hard way in Chapter 44:
Hinagiku: (after being punched) What was that for?!
Itadori: Huh? Well, you said to show you what I got--
Hinagiku: It's just a figure of speech!
  • The Prankster: She enjoys telling jokes and occasionally pulling harmless pranks alongside Ume to get a reaction, such as getting Fuki to laugh.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Itadori and Ume are the childish and mischievous red oni to Fuki's stoic and reserved blue oni.
    • To go even further, Itadori is the laid-back and immature red oni to Ume's overthinking and worrisome blue oni.
  • Sarashi: She wears this as a top... and nothing else.
  • Your Favorite: She really likes Akebia fruits, to Ume's bewilderment.

    Ume

Voiced by: Misaki Watada (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ume_3.png
  • Animorphism: An anime-exclusive example, but she and her teammates can combine to form a tiger.
  • Floral Theme Naming: Ume (ウメ) refers to the Prunus mume, or the Plum blossom.
  • It's All My Fault: She's the reason why Itadori has her iconic scar. While the latter doesn't hold her against it nor blame her for the incident that caused it, Ume has harbored feelings of guilt about it since then.
  • The Prankster: Ume is this alongside Itadori.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Ume and Itadori are the childish and mischievous red oni to Fuki's stoic and reserved blue oni.
    • To go even further, Ume is the overthinking and worrisome blue oni to Itadori's laid-back and immature red oni.
  • Team Chef: Combined with Informed Ability. It's not highlighted in the series very much outside of two panels in the manga and two scenes in the anime, but ancillary material provided by Shonen Sunday lists Ume's best trait as "cooking" (while also noting that it's not a ninjutsu technique).
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: She suffers from a fear of heights.

Team Rabbit

    Kagetsu

Voiced by: Saya Aizawa (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kagetsu.png
  • Beautiful Singing Voice: She is recognized to have a beautiful singing voice.
  • Determinator: Whenever Kagetsu gets "in the zone" to write a song, any sort of restraint or self-preservation is immediately thrown out the window. This is most apparent in Chapter 53 where she's so enamored by a thunderstorm, it gives her the inspiration to go outside and start writing... while said thunderstorm is going on, mind you.
  • Floral Theme Naming: Kagetsu (カゲツ) refers to the Crassula ovata, or the Jade plant.
  • Girl Group: Team Rabbit is well-known for the music performances they put on for the Akane Class. Kagetsu serves as the team's singer and song composer.
  • The Leader: As the singer and composer of their group, Kagetsu serves as the leader of Team Rabbit.
  • Writer's Block: Kagetsu doesn't cope with pressure well, especially when it comes to songwriting. When it's applied, she falls into a slump.

    Mukuge

Voiced by: Ayasa Itō (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mukuge.png
  • Dumb and Drummer: Downplayed and Played for Laughs. Though she's a drummer, by no means is she dumb by any stretch of the imagination, though in Chapter 36, her method of trying to stand out via face paint was a bit... odd.
  • Floral Theme Naming: Mukuge (ムクゲ) refers to the Hibiscus syriacus, or the Hibiscus.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: Also downplayed. As per her own admission, compared to Hototogisu's beauty and Kagetsu's voice, she doesn't really stand out on her own and wants to have more of a presence.
  • Nervous Wreck: Chapter 53 reveals Mukuge is frightened pretty easily, especially by thunder.
  • Signature Instrument: She's the drummer of Team Rabbit, performing using a handheld Taiko drum.

    Hototogisu

Voiced by: Eri Yukimura (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hototogisu.png
  • Blade on a Rope: Her weapon of choice is the kusarigama.
  • Floral Theme Naming: Hototogisu (ホトトギス) refers to the Tricyrtis hirta, or the Japanese toad lily.
  • Only Sane Woman: Hototogisu essentially acts as this in Chapter 53, not only comforting Mukuge when the thunder is scaring her to death but also reeling in Kagetsu's adrenaline junkie tendencies.
  • Signature Instrument: She's the flutist of Team Rabbit, performing using a transverse flute in particular.

Team Dragon

    Higiri

Voiced by: Yuka Nukui (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/higiri.png
  • Beneath the Mask: Higiri tries to act as a cool, level-headed, and reserved team leader, though this mainly hides the fact that she's a bit of a dork who's everything but what she tries to be. Both Suzushiro and Hasu easily see through her act though.
  • Blow You Away: Higiri's technique, "Whirlwind Jutsu", allows her to conjure a large gust of wind.
  • Floral Theme Naming: Higiri (ヒギリ) refers to the Clerodendrum japonicum, or the Japanese glorybower.
  • The Leader: She serves as the leader of Team Dragon.

    Suzushiro

Voiced by: Yūki Takada (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/suzushiro.png
  • Floral Theme Naming: Suzushiro (スズシロ) refers to the Raphanus sativus, or the Japanese radish.
  • Foil: To Higiri. While the latter is more reserved and serious, Suzushiro is impulsive, boisterous, and more open with herself.
  • Gut Feeling: She tends to act more on intuition than anything, to Higiri's chagrin.
  • Psychic Powers: Of the receptive type. Suzushiro's technique gives her heightened perception and awareness.

    Hasu

Voiced by: Moeka Kishimoto (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hasu.png
  • Confusion Fu: Hasu's technique, "Misdirection Jutsu", allows her to deceive her target(s) by disturbing their sense of direction. This is especially helpful when she knows she's being followed by someone.
  • Floral Theme Naming: Hasu (ハス) refers to the Nelumbo nucifera, or the Lotus.
  • Hidden Depths: Her entire character can be seen as this, as she almost never divulges any information about herself, even to her teammates.
    • Additionally, she also possesses an artistic side to her. Whenever she's alone, she enjoys spending her time in a cave painting its walls.

Team Snake

    Uikyou and Kikyou

Uikyou is voiced by: Madoka Asahina (Japanese)

Kikyou is voiced by: Minami Tanaka (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/uikyou_1.png
Uikyou
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kikyou.png
Kikyou
A pair of twins that work in tandem together as the Team Snake duo.
  • Always Identical Twins: Choice of legwear and color-coding aside, both Uikyou and Kikyou look almost the exact same.
  • Ambiguously Related: Even though their attire is very similar and they share a sisterly dynamic, neither the manga nor anime makes it clear whether they're actually relatednote .
  • Colour-Coded for Your Convenience: White and Red for Uikyou, Blue and White for Kikyou.
  • Floral Theme Naming:
    • Uikyou (ウイキョウ) refers to the Foeniculum vulgare, or the Fennel.
    • Kikyou (キキョウ) refers to the Platycodon grandiflorus, or the Balloon flower.
  • Forced Sleep: Their shared technique, "Sleep Bell Jutsu", puts the recipient into a forced sleep via a set of bells wielded by the duo.
  • Single-Minded Twins: Personality-wise, they are essentially the same person, often Speaking In Unison and/or Finishing Each Other's Sentences.
  • Tareme Eyes: Kikyou is drawn with the rounded, droopy tareme eyes, and represents the kind, soft-spoken, and otherwise rather quiet personality that is associated with such.
  • Theme Twin Naming: Uikyou, Kikyou.
  • Those Two Girls: Their closeness to one another is so great, that neither Uikyou nor Kikyou are ever seen without the other. Even when they get into a fight in Chapter 22 and they briefly split up, it's because they were arguing over to what extent are they close to each other.
  • Tsurime Eyes: Inverted. While Uikyou is drawn with the sharper, angular tsurime eyes, she is just as kind, soft-spoken, and quiet as her twin is.

Team Horse

    Hinagiku

Voiced by: Marika Kouno (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hinagiku.png
  • Alpha Bitch: Hinagiku is flippant, prideful, and egotistical, insisting she's the cutest in the class. No one except Kibushi buys into this though.
  • Always Someone Better: Played for Laughs in Chapter 27 when the Attractiveness Jutsu becomes widespread amongst the class. When it dissolved into a game to make Hinagiku cry because of how cute everyone else was, it sent her into a depression.
  • The Bully: Hinagiku essentially fills this role as the Alpha Bitch, acting insufferable to those around her and harassing people, especially the underclassmen, whether it be stealing Asagao's food or cheating food out of a group of younger students in a dice game.
  • Butt-Monkey: Hinagiku's plans tend to comically backfire on her, and none of the other kunoichis (except Kibushi) really takes her seriously.
  • Cheaters Never Prosper: Hinagiku will resort to sabotage and cheating to achieve victory in something, though something will wind up happening that results in her efforts being for naught:
    • Chapter 10:
      • She hypnotizes Sazanka and Asagao into voting for her to win a cuteness contest against Tsubaki, but when the latter embarrassingly can't call herself cute, it was enough for Hinagiku to throw the contest because Tsubaki acted cuter in her eyes.
    • Chapter 44:
    • Chapter 50:
      • Suspected of cheating in a dice gamenote , Tachiaoi, Shion, and Sumire express their suspicions by basically making attempts on her life.
Hinagiku: You guys!! You're totally overdoing it!! Just look at how you wrecked the floor!
Tachiaoi: What if someone was hiding in there?
Hinagiku: You threw kunais at me!
Shion: You might have been using threads to rig the results.
Hinagiku: You tried to set me on fire!!
        Sumire: Just in case.
      • When Mokuren revealed she was winning the whole time, not only did she win back all the dried meat her fellow team leaders and their teammates gambled away, but she won all of Hinagiku's too, leaving her with nothing in the end.
  • Didn't Think This Through: In Chapter 50, Hinagiku cheats a bunch of younger classmates out of their dried meat in a dice game. When their team leaders come by to win it back with one hell of a vengeance, only then she realizes maybe competing with them wasn't a good idea.
  • Floral Theme Naming: Hinagiku (ヒナギク) refers to the Bellis perennis, or the Daisy.
  • Hates Being Alone: Hinagiku hates the idea of being left alone and abandoned. When she thought she was left behind by her squad in Chapter 35, she tried putting on a tough act before breaking down in tears.
  • Hate Sink: Almost everyone in the Akane Class expresses indifference, annoyance, or downright disdain towards Hinagiku. The only exception to this is her teammates.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: Played for Laughs. Whenever she meets someone she thinks is cuter than herself, Hinagiku turns into a weeping, incoherent mess as a result of wounded pride.
  • It's All About Me: Hinagiku's selfish and overinflated ego conveys this, especially her spiels about being the cutest in the Akane Class.
  • The Leader: She serves as the leader of Team Horse.
  • Mind Control: Her technique, "Loyalty Trance Jutsu", allows her to hypnotize anyone by touching them.
  • Smug Snake: Played for Laughs. She's not quite as clever and cunning as she thinks she is.
  • Unknown Rival: Hinagiku claims to be Benisumomo's "fearless rival". In truth, Benisumomo doesn't actually give a shit about her nor does she share the sentiment.

    Kibushi

Voiced by: Maria Naganawa (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kibushi.png
  • A Day in the Limelight: Chapter 27 was this for her, employing Benisumomo's assistance to help her get Hinagiku out of her depression.
  • Berserk Button: Doing anything to make Hinagiku angry or cry will set Kibushi off pretty quickly.
  • Floral Theme Naming: Kibushi (キブシ) refers to the Stachyurus praecox, or the Early stachyurus.
  • Satellite Character: Her entire character is basically serving as Hinagiku's Yes-Man, constantly showering her with praise and highlighting her self-proclaimed cuteness.

    Oniyuri

Voiced by: Yo Taichi (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/oniyuri.png
  • Co-Dragons: With Kibushi, so to speak. While the former acts as Hinagiku's Yes-Man, Oniyuri acts as more of a bodyguard.
  • Determinator: She's quite stubborn when her mind is fixated on something.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Oniyuri dislikes playing dirty or doing things one may consider underhanded or cowardly, preferring to handle things the right way. However, if reasoned with, she'll go along with whatever methods are used.
  • Floral Theme Naming: Oniyuri (オニユリ) refers to the Lilium lancifolium, or the Tiger lily.
  • Only Sane Woman: Oniyuri is the most sensible and reasonable-thinking member of Team Horse. Unlike Hinagiku or Kibushi, Oniyuri thinks more impartially and objectively, and at times agrees with her opponents even if it goes against Hinagiku and her schemes. Additionally, when faced with unfavorable odds, she'll know to back off.
  • Shadow Pin: Oniyuri's technique, "Shadow Bind Jutsu", allows her to restrain her target(s) merely by being in her shadow.
  • The Stoic: Oniyuri is the most straight-laced and reserved member of Team Horse, rarely shown with any other emotion other than a neutral frown.

Team Sheep

    Benisumomo

Voiced by: Aya Yamane (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/benisumomo.png
  • Affectionate Nickname: Mizubashou and Touwata refer to her as "Beni-chan/Beni-senpai".
  • Beneath the Mask: Benisumomo's laid-back and lazy persona is partially a front to hide the fact she's equally as hardworking and diligent as Tsubaki. Only Hana and Tsubaki know her true self, which she prefers because she fears others will see her as uncool if seen otherwise.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: She is a self-proclaimed genius, with skills equal to that of Tsubaki. The only thing preventing her from surpassing the latter is her laziness, preferring to lie around in a hammock rather than work hard.
  • Deadpan Snarker: She'll throw in a wisecrack or a snide remark here and there without missing a beat.
  • Didn't Think This Through: After being caught in Mizubashou's traps one too many times, Benisumomo and Touwata enforce a ban on her trap-making. Neither of them actually considered how much she enjoyed making them nor how the ban would affect her.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • Despite her lazy persona, being a team leader is one of the few things Benisumomo actually does take seriously, and those who do not do the same greatly irk her.
    • While she's prone to taunt and tease as easily as she breathes, there is a limit as to how far she'll do so, and will admit when she's crossed a line.
  • Fatal Flaw: Pride. She is the only one in the class who can go toe-to-toe with Tsubaki as their skills and abilities more or less place them on equal footing. However, while Tsubaki remains diligent in her training, Benisumomo sees herself as a genius and would rather laze around, which is the only thing that holds her back from surpassing the former. Additionally, she greatly values the view that others have of her — the aloof, yet cool upperclassman — so much so that she feels the need to hide who she is all in to look cool to them (i.e. training alone when nobody is present), even though doing so makes her come off as a Jerkass at times, especially with her snarky comments.
  • Floral Theme Naming: Benisumomo (ベニスモモ) refers to the Prunus simonii, or the Apricot plum.
  • Foil:
    • To Tsubaki. Both of them are leaders of their own teams, as well as on equal footing in terms of skillset. However, while Tsubaki remains diligent with her training and doesn't call attention to herself, Benisumomo is fine getting by with her natural talent and calls herself a prodigy in the class.
    • To Touwata. Both of them are on the same team and are equally hard workers. However, Touwata is far more open with the emphasis on working hard, while Benisumomo keeps this side of her hidden from almost everyone else.
  • Friendly Rivalry: She and Tsubaki are this to each other as their skills put both of them on equal footing. Still, they're both good friends such that she knows she can turn to Tsubaki for help when she needs it.
  • Jerkass to One: Even though her snarking and teasing are not meant to actually bully anyone, Hinagiku is the only one that Benisumomo genuinely sees with disdain. When the latter is sent into a depression in Chapter 27, she sees it as an opportunity to take the teasing up a notch, until she realizes she went too far with it.
  • The Leader: She serves as the leader of Team Sheep.
  • Tsundere: Benisumomo is a textbook example of this. While she presents herself as aloof, abrasive, and uncaring at times, the truth of the matter is that she is a kindhearted girl who greatly cares for her teammates, her friends, and her fellow kunoichi. While she is also extremely snarky and prone to taunt and tease others, she never does it to genuinely be mean or put down anybody in general, but rather just to look cool and hide her true self.

    Mizubashou

Voiced by: Manaka Iwami (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mizubashou.png
  • Affectionate Nickname: Benisumomo and Touwata refer to her as "Mizu/Mizu-senpai".
  • Bookworm: Mizubashou fits this to a tee. Wears glasses, whatever interests she has only involve traps and trap-making, and loves to read.
  • Floral Theme Naming: Mizubashou (ミズバショウ) refers to the Lysichiton camtschatcensis, or the Asian skunk-cabbage.
  • Going Cold Turkey: Chapter 42 deals with Mizubashou trying to halt her trap production for a day after Benisumomo and Touwata get caught in another of them. It seems to go well for the most part, except for the part whereby the end of the day, she begins to experience withdrawal symptoms.
  • Trap Master: She relies on her large abundance of traps that she creates in combat, and will go along with any plan as long as she gets to use them, which unfortunately for her is very rare. The only problem is that she makes way too many - sometimes out of habit as she admits, even in her sleep!

    Touwata

Voiced by: Miyu Tomita (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/touwata.png
  • Affectionate Nickname: Mizubashou refers to her as "Tou-chan".
  • Determinator: Touwata strongly believes in the importance of hard work, diligence, and willpower - almost too strongly for her own good. Her beliefs went to such extremes to the point where she fell sick due to overworking herself in Chapter 33.
  • Floral Theme Naming: Touwata (トウワタ) refers to the Asclepias curassavica, or the tropical Milkweed.
  • Teach Me How To Fight: Touwata often demands Benisumomo to train with her, while the latter would rather laze around or blow her off.

Team Monkey

    Mokuren

Voiced by: Hina Yomiya (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mokuren.png
  • Achievements in Ignorance: In Chapter 50, it was discovered that she's been winning every single bet during Hinagiku's dice game, in an attempt by Tsubaki and some fellow team leaders to win back shares of dried meat Hinagiku conned out of their younger teammates. By the end of the chapter, not only did she win all of their shares back, but also all of Hinagiku's personal share too. The best part of it all, she didn't even understand the rules that entire time.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Mokuren's kind personality makes it rather difficult for her to get angry with people, even when she's in a situation where she absolutely should be. Chapter 31 shows what happens when she's pushed to her limits, and it's enough to terrify even Tsubaki and Rindou.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: Mokuren's healing abilities only work on physical injuries (i.e sprained ankles). She can't heal sick people without proper medicines and herbs. Additionally, her abilities also wear her out after prolonged usage.
  • Extreme Doormat: Though she's happy to offer her assistance to those who ask, Mokuren is unable to stand up for herself and say no to anyone, which results in everyone coming to her for one reason or another, at the cost of her own needs and wellbeing.
  • Floral Theme Naming: Mokuren (モクレン) refers to the Magnolia liliiflora, or the Magnolia.
  • Friend to All Living Things: Not only is she friendly and kind to people, but Mokuren is also this to other living things such as insects and animals. During her day off in Chapter 9, she was shown admiring a water strider, helping a fallen ladybug onto a leaf, feeding a bluebird, and helping Team Rabbit tend to a wounded tanuki.
  • The Leader: She serves as the leader of Team Monkey.
  • The Medic: Mokuren's team serves as the resident healers of the Akane Class.
  • Nice Girl: You're damn right she is. Mokuren is sweet and kind to everyone and everything around her, she's optimistic and cheerful, and always happy to lend a hand to anyone in need, complete with a smile on her face.
  • Not So Above It All: Though she thought it was embarrassing, not even Mokuren could resist the urge of performing the Attractive Jutsu in the Chapter 30.5 omake.
  • Percussive Maintenance: Mokuren's healing technique, simply dubbed "that 'whap' thing", instantly heals any living being by hitting (or in this case, "whapping") them where they are injured. Unfortunately for the recipient, this causes them considerable yet very brief pain.
  • Workaholic: Mokuren will work herself ragged in order to fulfill the needs of her fellow classmates. That said, she finds no problem with it and is more than happy to assist those in need.

    Housenka

Voiced by: Hiyori Kouno (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/housenka.png
  • Floral Theme Naming: Housenka (ホウセンカ) refers to the Impatiens balsamina, or the Balsam.
  • Percussive Maintenance: Housenka shares the same healing technique as Mokuren and Tsuwabuki, allowing her to instantly - albeit painfully - heal any physical injury by hitting it. However, she admits her skills are not on the same level as theirs.
  • The Prankster: Like Sazanka of Team Dog, Housenka is quite the prankster herself.
  • The Unfettered: Housenka is absolutely determined to defeat Team Dog in combat in the hopes that she can claim their team name in favor of Team Monkey's, despite the fact that they can't swap team names... not like that impedes her and trying to do so anyway.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds:
    • "Best buds" might be stretching it, but she and Tsuwabuki are constantly at each others' throats.
    • Also with Sazanka. They are able to find common ground and get along at times, but most of the time, their interactions involve arguing with each other.

    Tsuwabuki

Voiced by: Yuuki Hirose (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tsuwabuki.png
  • Berserk Button: Calling Tsuwabuki dumb will easily piss her off, especially when it comes to Housenka.
  • Dumb Muscle: She is accused of being such by Housenka, though this doesn't really hold any weight considering Tsuwabuki is much smarter than the latter.
  • Floral Theme Naming: Tsuwabaki (ツワブキ) refers to the Farfugium japonicum, or the Leopard plant.
  • Percussive Maintenance: Tsuwabuki shares the same healing technique as Mokuren and Housenka, allowing her to instantly - albeit painfully - heal any physical injury by hitting it.
  • Smart People Play Chess: Tsuwabuki enjoys playing Go with Fuki, even though Housenka notes that she always loses.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: "Best buds" might be stretching it, but she and Housenka are constantly at each other's throats.

Team Rooster

    Sumire

Voiced by: Fairouz Ai (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sumire_66.png
  • Affectionate Nickname: Azami and Tanpopo refer to her as "Sumirecchi".
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: As much as she detests how much grief they give her, Sumire does care for Azami and Tanpopo. She made the effort to go about the day as they do to understand them in Chapter 43, and joined Tsubaki and several other team leaders to confront Hinagiku after discovering the latter cheated several younger classmates out of their food.
  • Comically Missing the Point: After going about the day like Azami and Tanpopo do in Chapter 43, Sumire somehow concludes that their free-spirited lifestyle is looking down on the kunoichi.
  • Fish out of Water: Sumire's attempt to try to understand Azami and Tanpopo show how out of her element she is, as her younger teammates' whimsical behaviors are considered alien to someone as uptight and serious as she is.
  • Floral Theme Naming: Sumire (スミレ) refers to the Viola mandshurica, or the Violet.
  • Invisibility: Sumire's technique, "Invisibility Jutsu", allows her to become invisible to those around her. However, her presence can still be detected by some, even with her technique active.
  • The Leader: She serves as the leader of Team Rooster, often having to put up with Azami and Tanpopo's antics.
  • Literal-Minded: Sumire tends to interpret things too seriously, often to her detriment as Tsubaki laments.
  • Obsessed Are the Listmakers: Sumire is seldom seen without a checklist comprising of daily tasks and training sessions, the latter often serving as punishment for her two teammates.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Sumire is the stern, uptight, and tidy Blue Oni to Azami and Tanpopo's free-spirited, happy-go-lucky, and sloven Red Oni.
  • Straight Man: She serves as this to Azami and Tanpopo in order to put up with their undisciplined behavior and discipline them.

    Azami

Voiced by: Ayaka Asai (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/azami.png
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: As much as she is detested, she genuinely looks up to Sumire and appreciates the work she puts in for her and Tanpopo's sakes, seeing her as a reliable leader.
  • Floral Theme Naming: Azami (アザミ) refers to the Cirsium, or the Thistle.
  • Gyaru Girl: Her speech, personality, and fashion sense are similar to that of gyaru culture.
  • I Just Want to Be Free: Zigzagged. While she and Tanpopo are seen as undisciplined and slovenly, they just want to live life the way they want to without restraint.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: She and Tanpopo are the free-spirited, happy-go-lucky, and sloven Red Oni to Sumire's stern, uptight, and tidy Blue Oni.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: She's very energetic and cheery, and like the flower based on her name, her hair is a bright violet color.
  • Sarashi: She sports this underneath her robe which she keeps undone.

    Tanpopo

Voiced by: Honoka Inoue (Japanese)

Team Boar

    Dokudami

Voiced by: Natsumi Kawaida (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dokudami.png
  • The Ace: Dokudami's sheer strength alone is enough to consider her one of the top students of the Akane Class. Her abilities are enough to put the likes of Tsubaki on edge.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: In spite of her imposing presence, Dokudami is actually quite cordial and friendly, if a bit loud, making her very likable amongst the Akane Class.
  • Berserk Button: Regardless of context, DO NOT call her anything with the word "stupid" in it.
  • Carry a Big Stick: Dokudami's weapon of choice is a large club.
  • Cute Little Fangs: Dokudami's character design gives her these, which combined with her headband, give her a look akin to an ogre.
  • Dumb Muscle: Despite her strength, Dokudami (and by extension, her team) suffers from the fact that they're definitely not the brightest in the clan.
  • Floral Theme Naming: Dokudami (ドクダミ) refers to the Houttuynia cordata, which goes by many namesnote .
  • The Leader: She serves as the leader of Team Boar.
  • No Sense of Direction: Her sense of direction is basically non-existent. Though she and her squad have attempted to fix this, none of their attempts bear fruit.
  • Out of Focus: Dokudami and the team are rarely shown in the manga in general, largely due to them being lost out in the wilderness yet again.

    Aogiri

Voiced by: Makoto Koichi (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aogiri.png
  • Berserk Button: Like her teammates, Aogiri doesn't take to being called anything with the word "stupid" in it, regardless of context.
  • A Day in the Spotlight: Chapter 48 acts as this for her personally, requesting Tsubaki and Mokuren's help to teach her how to smile.
  • Determinator: The moment her mind is fixated on something, she's committed to sticking to it.
  • Emotionless Girl: Not particularly by choice. In her few appearances in the manga, Aogiri is very often shown with a neutral frown. Chapter 48 revealed that this is the only expression she actually knows, and she also takes issue with it because it makes her come off as unfriendly to others.
  • Eyepatch of Power: Aogiri wears an eyepatch over her right eye, though the reason why has yet to be explained.
  • Floral Theme Naming: Aogiri (アオギリ) refers to the Firmiana simplex, or the Chinese parasol tree.
  • Master Swordsman: Her skill with a katana is unmatched and unrivaled to the point where the naked eye can't even perceive her swings. Additionally, Aogiri's powerful enough to cut down a tree in one go.
  • No Sense of Direction: Like Dokudami, Aogiri's sense of direction is non-existent.
  • Out of Focus: As a result of being on Dokudami's team, Aogiri is rarely ever seen in the manga due to getting lost in the wilderness again.
  • The Un-Smile: Aogiri's attempts to smile come off as looking like a psychopath. When she shows Dokudami and Shakuyaku, they're fucking terrified.
Dokudami: Scaryyyy... Must never piss her off again...

Aoi Class

A male-exclusive tribe of shinobi residing in a secluded village.
    General
  • Demonization: Justified. Similar to the Akane Class, the Aoi Class teaches its students that women are dangerous for the exact same reasons as the former. During the final chapter's epilogue, it's revealed that the rule was abolished by both classes and have gradually began allowing their students to interact with each other.
  • Mirror Character: Due to the fact that they used to be a single entity, the Aoi Class is essentially this for the Akane Class and vice versa, using the same system of student team-building.

Click here to see his tanuki form
Hana's counterpart in the Aoi Class.
  • Ambiguous Situation: His dialogue in the final episode implies that he and the Monkey/Octopus beast are one and the same, being used to not only watch over the Akane Class in Hana and Konoha's absence but to also test their abilities.
  • Animorphism: He is able to take on many animal forms, including a tanuki and the anime-exclusive Monkey/Octopus beast. When he takes on his tanuki form, he is impossible to detect, even for Hana.
  • No Name Given: He goes unnamed in both the anime and manga, only being credited as "Man??" in the former.

Students:

    Male Student
A male student of the Aoi Class who makes contact with Tsubaki via a series of letters.
  • Mirror Character: As Rindou notes, he's basically this to Tsubaki. Both of them are the leaders of their respective teams - each with squabbling underclassmen. Additionally, the two of them are interested in the opposite gender. However, he's the only one in the Aoi Class with this curiosity, as he notes the rest of his peers couldn't care less.
  • The Unreveal: Outside of his letters and combined with the rule forbidding men and women from interacting, almost nothing about him is actually known or seen, not even a name, with the only detail about him physically that he discloses is his heightnote . Even when finally meeting Tsubaki in Chapter 61, we don't get to really see what he looks like.
  • Unseen Pen Pal: In what was essentially an act of desperation, he leaves a letter at the onsen in the hopes that someone from the Akane Class would find it. When that person turns out to be Tsubaki, the two of them become this to each other. The two of them finally meet in person at the onsen in Chapter 61.
  • Walking Spoiler: Due to the fact he's the first and only male character that interacts with Tsubaki, his mere existence is a major spoiler for the last six chapters of the series.
