    Scientist Sohee

Do you remember the number of breads you've eaten? Mine is 4797.
JP artwork
A gifted student of the Magic School. However, she has no talent in magic: she understands the inner workings of magic and combines it with science, pioneering a new field of study called "magitech."
Rarity: 2-star
Species: Human
Age: 19
Height and weight: 162cm/50kg
Element: Light
Role: Ranged
Exclusive Weapon: Magiton Buster
Voiced by: Satomi Sato (Japanese), Alex Ryan (English)
Illustrator: Wonchun Choi (GL/KR), 紅白法師 (JP)

For tropes pertaining to Scientist on the Beach Sohee, see the Basic Unique Heroes page.

  • A Day in the Limelight: World 14 is effectively this for Sohee as she temporarily becomes the Knight's main Sidekick, assisting the Knight through the majority of World 14 as they work together to solve the mystery of the time loops. There's even an extended sequence where they combine problem-solving skills with sheer brawn to penetrate the extensive security measures of a top-secret research facility.
  • Break the Haughty: During her time at the Magic School, Sohee was so arrogant and selfish that she dismissed everyone. It wasn't until the ghost invasion that she was forced to start working with other people and making bonds with them in spite of herself. When Favi and Lavi sacrificed themselves to save her after defeating Elphaba, Sohee dropped her usual arrogance and broke down blaming herself for failing to save them. The experience hit her so hard that she finally started to get over her ego and start working to help others out of altruism instead of showing off.
  • Chain Lightning: Her Magiton Buster is represented as a large blast of electricity that bounces among targets. If lined up correctly, the potential range of this weapon is staggering.
  • The Chosen One: She's one of the thirteen Champions.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: She's smart enough to create weapons to battle ghosts and shadowy monsters without much effort. Her future self even builds Future Knight's weapons, the Cosmic Destroyer and Atomic Destroyer.
  • Heroic Comedic Sociopath: Her blatant narcissism and casual lack of concern for others is a source of jokes in-universe. Marianne usually refers to her as "Sociopath" for this reason.
  • Hidden Buxom: Her Summer version and her JP redesign both show that Sohee is actually quite big under that school uniform.
  • It's All About Me: In the side-story 21 Kanterbury Street.
  • Insufferable Genius: Never misses an opportunity to brag about her intelligence and mock anyone who can't keep up with her intellectually. She happily recounts her fondest memories of school were when she corrected her teachers so much that they broke into tears.
  • It's All My Fault: Believes that Lavi and Favi turning into statues was due to her incompetence during the events of the Magic School arc, and teams up with the protagonist to find a way to restore them.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: It's buried very deep, but she does have a sense of altruism and she's loyal enough to her friends that she'll go to extreme lengths to help them.
  • Lightning Gun: Her signature weapon, the Magiton Buster, shoots blasts of light and electricity.
  • Muggle with a Degree in Magic: She's the only student of the magic school with no magical powers of her own. Her deep understanding of magical phenomena make her more than qualified to deal with the supernatural threats that would stump most actual mages.
  • Not Brainwashed: The 21 Kanterbury Street side-story has her go rogue after Kai is defeated, but unlike Marianne, the Invader Crystals were not involved; she just let her popularity get to her head.
  • Oblivious to Her Own Description: Being extremely proud of her high intellect, Sohee loves to insult those she perceives as simple brutes by calling them "gorillas", but her short temper and penchant for violence show that Sohee is not too far from her description of "gorilla" herself.
  • Pals with Jesus: Somehow, she managed to get a working relationship with After World Inc. They purchase her anti-ghost inventions to help them deal with the more troublesome evil spirits.
  • Pet the Dog: Even though she acts like an Alpha Bitch in the side-story 21 Kanterbury Street, she still takes the time to get others to know about the Heroic Sacrifice Lavi and Favi did.
  • Ripple-Effect-Proof Memory: For some reason, Sohee is the only other person besides Claude and the Knight who is aware of the time loops in Demonshire. This ends up being a boon to the Knight as Sohee's intelligence and passionate personality end up helping the Knight several times throughout the arc.
  • Sufficiently Analyzed Magic: Sohee has no magic of her own, but she understands the principles it operates under enough to create inventions that can counteract or mimic a wide array of supernatural phenomena. The only reason the Knight's party has a fighting chance against the ghosts in the Magic School is that one of her inventions made them physical enough to beat with normal weapons.
  • Tsundere: Sohee will vehemently deny feelings of friendship or empathy for anyone, but consistently shows that she cannot help but lend a helping hand to people in trouble. Whenever she's not the one making trouble, at least.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: She and Marianne squabble and insult each other often in their shared scenes, but hang out together often as they are the only characters smart enough to really understand each other or contribute to their projects.
  • You Can't Fight Fate: Spends the entirety of World 3 Nightmare's story trying to prevent the twins from having to do their Heroic Sacrifice via time travel to no avail.

    Twin Fighter Lavi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lavigl.png
Haha! Who do you think you're dealing with?
JP artwork
A demon attending the Magic School as part of the talent exchange program between the human world and the devildom. She hopes to become the ultimate fighting champion of the world.
Rarity: 2-star
Species: Demon
Age: 23
Height and weight: 150cm/42kg
Element: Fire
Role: Tanker
Exclusive Weapon: Pulverizer
Voiced by: Aiko Yamada (Japanese), Nicole Gose (English)
Illustrator: Wonchun Choi (GL/KR)

  • Amazing Technicolor Population: She and her brother have noticeable bright pink skin.
  • Back from the Dead: You eventually bring back some stew from the Dungeon Kingdom that de-petrifies her and Favi and lets them join your party.
  • Big Sister Instinct: As the older twin, she's very protective of her "little" brother.
  • Dumb Muscle: Sohee certainly thinks so. While she isn't stupid, she is much more interested in fighting than learning and isn't much for thinking ahead.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: While she is very protective of her brother and usually the one who talks for both of them, Favi is the one who has to remind her to be cautious instead of running into danger.
  • Goddamned Bats: Enemy Lavis take an annoyingly long time to kill, owing to Lavi's naturally high stats and lesser reliance on gear. Throw in elite status, and she can potentially become a damage check through simply being that tanky.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: The demon twins sacrifice themselves to seal Elphaba and save the Magic School.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite her younger self's aversion to academics, she somehow became knowledgeable and technically capable enough to become Sohee's main research and development assistant over the ten-year time skip the Unrecorded World.
  • Hot-Blooded: Lavi tends not to think too far ahead and can rush off into danger without Favi to reign her in.
  • Kung-Fu Wizard: Lavi instinctively buffs herself with defensive magic before brawling, explaining why she's a tanker.
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: She's far stronger than her childish looks would imply. It's said to be due to her constantly channeling her magic to reinforce her body out of pure instinct.
  • Pintsized Powerhouse: Even with her tiny frame, she's capable of busting up gigantic rocks and crystals with little trouble.
  • Polar Opposite Twins: She's outgoing and loud, but genuinely compassionate compared to her brother Favi who is quiet and keeps to himself.
  • Older Than They Look: Is 23 during the events of world 3 despite barely looking old enough to pass as human teenager. Explained as demons in the setting living much longer and aging slower than most other beings. She finally grows to look her age during the 10-year Time Skip of Unrecorded World.

    Twin Healer Favi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/favigl_3.png
It's over now, right? What a relief...
JP artwork
A demon attending the Magic School as part of the talent exchange program between the human world and the devildom. He became an expert at healing spells due to always looking after his older twin sister who constantly got into brawls.
Rarity: 2-star
Species: Demon
Age: 23
Height and weight: 150cm/40kg
Element: Water
Role: Support
Exclusive Weapon: Jack Frost
Voiced by: Hiroka Aoto (Japanese), Anne Yatco (English)
Illustrator: Wonchun Choi (GL/KR)

  • Amazing Technicolor Population: He has the same pink skin tone as his sister.
  • Artificial Stupidity: Favi's heal is a narrow but long-range beam, and his AI often tries to maximize the healing from it at the cost of positioning.
  • Back from the Dead: You eventually bring back some stew from the Dungeon Kingdom that de-petrifies him and Lavi and lets them join your party.
  • Cute Mute: He lost the ability to speak after a certain incident in his childhood, but he can telepathically communicate with his sister. You can still hear him talk, though, and he'll tell you that he isn't used to talking out loud. He does wind up growing out of this as the plot progresses.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: He's timid and dependent on Lavi for protection, but he is usually the more reasonable of the twins and one able to keep them out of trouble that her brash attitude can bring.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: The demon twins sacrifice themselves to seal Elphaba and save the Magic School.
  • The Medic: He acts as the Resistance's main healer in the Unrecorded World.
  • Polar Opposite Twins: He's quiet and keeps to himself, seeing going out of his way for good deeds as dumb compared to his sister Lavi who is outgoing and loud.
  • Older Than They Look: Like his twin sister, he ages slower than a human. He's 23 during world 3 but looks like a young human teenager at the oldest. Like his sister, he finally grows to adult stature in the Unrecorded World.
  • Secretly Selfish: His voice lines show he isn't nearly as kindhearted as he seems and thinks that his sister's niceness is being dumb while being somewhat interested in necromancy. He seems to grow out of his worse traits in the Unrecorded World.

    Class President Kate
The student council president of the Magic School, infamous for being strict and stern.
Rarity: 1-star
Species: Human
Age: 19
Height and weight: 162cm/49kg
Element: Earth
Role: Ranged

  • Brainwashed and Crazy: During chapter 3, she attempts to find out what's causing all the ghosts to appear, but ends up under its influence where she claims to want to kill all non-magical people. She returns to normal once you beat some sense back into her.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite her personality being too rigid, she is always thinking of ways to improve the school for the students. During the events of the Magic School arc, she was compassionate and calm, doing her utmost to protect the other students. Until she came too close to what was causing the ghosts to appear...

    Homecoming Queen Mina
A troublesome student at the Magic School, obsessed with being popular among her peers.
Rarity: 1-star
Species: Human
Age: 18
Height and weight: 161cm/47kg
Element: Fire
Role: Ranged

    Elphaba
The founder of the Magic School. While long dead, she hasn't let that stop her.
  • Bad Samaritan: She offers safe haven for students from the ghosts. In reality, not only did she cause the whole catastrophe, but the magical seals in the room she claimed would protect them were really designed to let her drain the lives of anyone in them to fuel her attempt to resurrect herself.
  • Beyond Redemption: The Afterworld attempts to purify even the most evil souls to allow them to eventually reincarnate. Elphaba is so powerful and so unrepentantly evil that none of their usual methods of redeeming souls would ever work on her. Instead, they sealed her up in her painting, put that behind lock and key, and mostly try to forget she exists.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Elphaba presents herself as a kindly woman dedicated to protecting her school and students from evil, even after death. It's all lies. In truth, she's an incredibly selfish and malicious witch who unleashed the ghost invasion of the school herself. Both to gain a personal ghostly army and to consume the lives of the remaining students to fuel her own resurrection.
  • The Dreaded: The workers of Afterworld Inc. are so terrified of her that they don't even try to force her into the punishments they usually do for evil souls. They just trap her painting in a room and try to forget she even exists.
  • Fantastic Racism: She looks to wipe out all non-magical people after she regains her body.
  • It's All About Me: Elaphaba operates purely on self interest and ego.
  • Man Behind the Man: She unleashed the ghosts and shadow beast on the school, having some of her ghost minions possess the faculty and student council to frame them for the deed.
  • Our Founder: She founded the Magic School and has a giant portrait of herself hanging on the wall. She uses this to communicate with students and faculty from beyond the grave.
  • The Sociopath: Elphaba has no empathy or care for others at all. Any kindness or care she expresses are just shallow affectations. In truth, she would happily drain all of her students to death and frame an innocent for her crimes so long as it got her closer to what she wants.
  • Spooky Painting: She haunts her own portrait. When she gets serious, she changes it into a monstrous image and can jump between other paintings in the room. Even in After World, she remains trapped in her painting to protect other souls from her.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: She's so evil and powerful that the Afterworld couldn't hope to redeem her tainted soul. They had to not only keep her in her painting but lock the painting in a guarded room in a place where only the most honorable dead can go just to make sure that she can't get minions or more victims.

    Occult Club Girl
A student obsessed with all things occult. Plays a major part in Laura's sidequest.
  • Apocalyptic Log: You find her secret hideout in the Unrecorded World, where she's kept a log of the Plague Doctor's activities. Given that this is Unrecorded World, it's about as terrible as you'd imagine.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: She's obsessed with the more disturbing and macabre side of magic, but purely from an intellectual perspective. She has no interest in ever putting anything she learns to its intended use. When she does finally see a particularly vivid example of dark magic in use, she's clearly disturbed by it.
  • Everyone Has Standards: As much as she loves the occult, the end of Laura's tale is enough to disturb even her.
  • Go Mad from the Revelation: The final log has her realize that the Plague Doctor is Invisible to Normals ... and she can see him. The resulting paranoia leads her to exile herself.
  • Goth: She loves the creepier side of magic.
  • No Name Given: She is only called "Occult Club Girl".
  • Willing Channeler: Will often let her be possessed by spirits. The player's job at the end is to snap her out of it with a potion. She ends up being the victim of a clearly unwilling channeling at the hands of Laura's ghost.

    Laura
A student from the school's past. Has a sidequest that spans across most of world 3.
  • The Atoner: She can be found in the "After World Inc." side story as a spirit locked up in a maximum security room as punishment for her crimes in life. She seems to have lost the sadistic madness her ghost formerly had and is now genuinely remorseful for all she had done. When the ghosts of her pets Lucy and Choco try to break her out by stealing Soul Points and transferring it to her Soul Point debt, she tells them to stop because she'd rather pay for her sins the slow but right way and urges them to leave her to her fate.
  • Break the Cutie: Oh boy did they ever.
  • Demonic Possession: After reading her third diary, Laura's ghost possesses Occult Girl's body and uses it and her shadow beast pets to attack the player party.
  • The Dreaded: Afterworld Inc. fears her so much that they have her locked up in chains behind maximum security prison doors under constant guard. Seeing her cell doors being opened is enough to terrify a guard used to dealing with powerful evil spirits into running for his afterlife.
  • Drunk on the Dark Side: The more she used her dark magic for evil purposes, the more cruel and irrational she became. By the time her life ended, she was a cackling cartoon villain that only cared about tormenting those around her for her own amusement.
  • Dual Boss: At the conclusion of her arc, she sends her two Shadow Beast pets after you in this way.
  • Fate Worse than Death: Her soul was given harsh punishment in the Afterworld: solitary confinement for as long as it takes to cleanse her tainted soul. She acknowledges she deserves after her crimes in life and resigns herself to pay off her karmic debt, even if it takes all eternity.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: Goes from a meek new student at the magic school to sadistic witch terrorizing the entire kingdom with dark magic and Shadow Beasts.
  • Go Mad from the Revelation: Learning that she was only being bullied For the Lulz causes her to completely snap.
  • Replacement Goldfish: She named her Shadow Beasts after her old pet mice and treated them as adorable pets even as she had them slaughter her victims.
  • Taking You with Me: After being defeated, she tries to feed herself and the Plague Doctor to her remaining Shadow Beast. Laura is later seen in the After World, but the Doctor himself evidently escaped the attempt.
  • Tragic Villain: She was a normal girl victimized by vicious bullies that killed her only companions while the teachers who should have protected her enabled it all. The Plague Doctor preyed on her anger and grief to mold her into a monstrous witch for his own inscrutable purpose.
  • Together in Death: She and her mice reunited in the After World. She warns them that they should enjoy their afterlives without her as her evil in life would take her decades if not centuries to atone for, if at all. They refuse to leave, deciding that being with her again is worth it and she thanks them for their loyalty.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: She was a sensitive, gentle soul before being tormented by sadistic bullies and the influence of the Plague Doctor turned her into an insane witch with no goals but to kill for her amusement.
  • Who's Laughing Now?: She began her descent by taking brutal revenge on her bullies and the teachers who enabled them before extending her rampage to the entire kingdom.
