Main Characters

    Sam Anon

Sam Anon

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gitclsam.png
- believes that handholding counts as third base

Our protagonist and the Player Character, Sam Anon is the titular Loser; she gets wrapped up in Grace's quest to save the world because Grace asked her to come along, and Sam will do anything a pretty girl asks.

  • Big Beautiful Woman: Sam is chubby and, despite her terrible sense of self-image, many characters are of the opinion she's quite pretty, such as one of the NPCs in Chapter 1 expressing surprise when Sam says she's single.
  • Covert Pervert: Some of Sam's dialogue and possible dialogue options (typically anything under the "flustered" option) reveals how she's not only flustered by the beautiful women around her but also has some slightly kinky proclivities— for example, in the Chapter 1 boss fight, her "flustered" response to seeing Angela chained to the boss is "god i wish that were me." Chapter 3 reveals a surprisingly serious dissection of this trope— one of the many, many things that Sam has self-doubts about is her attraction to women, and if it's really her sexuality or her envy of those women. She also worries if her attraction to women around her is creepy, so it makes sense that she's being "covert."
  • Deadpan Snarker: Especially in Chapter One, before her issues really start hammering on her and she swaps more to Self-Deprecation.
  • The Everyman: Only in the first chapter, before the player knows much about Sam herself; she reacts to Grace and Valentin's casual discussions of battle mechanics, the presence of enemies, and even the boss fights with the same bewilderment of a first time player.
  • Freaky Fashion, Mild Mind: Sam wears a dark, revealing outfit that calls to mind a sultry Lady of Black Magic, but she's actually fairly shy and self-conscious. It's heavily implied that she dresses this way because she wants to invoke this image and be more confident.
  • Goth Girls Know Magic: Sam is a goth girl who knows magic, but unlike most examples of this trope, she mainly deals in healing magic.
  • The Hero: While Grace is the hero of the main plot, Sam is the Player Character, and the story is all from her perspective. At one point, she even notes that she couldn't be the hero of a story, for the simple reason that she wasn't the usual type for it, being both riddled with self doubt and a healer, not to mention trans.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Sam struggles with being the only non-combatant in the party, believing she lacks the strength or confidence of her allies. She reaches her lowest point in Act III, and has to fight her Enemy Without before the rest of the party assures her that they're only able to keep fighting because of her constant support.
  • I Am Not Pretty: Despite her party members and several NPCs telling Sam that she's beautiful, she has a hard time believing it. This is because of her anxiety in dealing with people who hate her for transitioning and refuse to acknowledge her gender.
  • King Incognito: The ending reveals Sam is actually the princess of the country. Her royal lineage is also implied by one of the road stories using her deadname.
  • The Medic: Sam is the party's main healer due to having access to the Support abilities of equippable trinkets, most of which include healing.
  • Perky Goth: While she's far too shy and self-conscious to be truly "perky", Sam is much more sweet than the typical image of a brooding goth would suggest.
  • The Red Mage: Sam uses both offensive Ravage spells and support magic to deal damage and heal allies respectively. Albeit, given how her powers work, it's hard for Sam to actually kill her enemies, and this gives her considerable angst.
  • Screaming Woman: Sam yells a lot in the first chapter as she tries to comprehend she's suddenly on a road trip to save the world.
  • Support Party Member: Instead of her allies' Exploit skills, Sam gets Support actions for healing, buffing, and debuffing. She also gets Ravage actions, which increase the enemy's Ravage gauge but does little actual damage. This is actually the source of a lot of Sam's self-doubts; she's aware that she can't win a fight on her own. She's unaware that being the lone support-focused member makes Sam, in a lot of ways, the most important person in the party; no one else can heal or buff their allies like she can.
  • Vapor Wear: The material on Sam's default outfit is quite sheer, covering up sensitive areas while also making clear she's wearing nothing else underneath. Unusually for this trope, other characters also comment on it from time to time.
  • White Magician Girl: Despite looking like she could be the poster girl for Lady of Black Magic, Sam is actually the resident healer. Besides being a support focused role, she also fulfills the more emotional aspects of the trope. She's self-aware about this, and regards it as one of the reasons she would never be the main character of the story.

    Grace Morningstar

Grace Morningstar

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gitclgrace.png
- loud and rowdy for justice

A proud and powerful warrior, Grace is the one who asks the titular Loser to Get in the Car; she stole the Sword of Fate and is now on the run from the Divine Order, while simultaneously on her own quest to go kick the Machine Devil's head in. She's not supposed to do any of those things, but Grace is the kind of person who sees a mountain and runs to climb it; time will tell if her hopes are misplaced, or if she's completely right.

  • BFS: Grace wields the Sword of Fate, which is roughly the length of her entire body. She jokes that a movie adaptation of the party's adventures would depict her as dragging it constantly because no one would believe she's able to easily hold it.
  • Big Beautiful Woman: Grace is very short and stout and is constantly hyped up as a "ultra-serious babe" by Val. Sam has also crushed on her for years.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: Whenever Grace uses the Sword of Fate, she states "I won't falter in the face of evil!" A road story reveals that this was the protest sign text used by Emily Harmless, who died defending a library from cultists. Grace gets to say this to Emily Harmless' killer during the second phase of the Final Boss for some beautiful karma.
  • Combat Medic: When Grace uses the Sword of Fate, she heals the party by a small amount in addition to greatly filling the targeted enemy's Ravage gauge. The amount healed increases the more the sword is used in a single battle. This makes her a great pinch healer in-between Sam's stronger heals.
  • Duel Boss: Grace must take on the Machine Devil's true form by herself during the last battle- though Sam can still heal her with Splash Healing.
  • The Hero: Grace is clearly the main heroine of the plot, even if Sam is the player character up until the very last battle, wherein the player takes control of Grace for a brief battle.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Due to how the Sword of Fate works, she basically has to, since it's the one thing that can put the Machine Devil back under.
  • Hero-Worshipper: Grace has a quiet, but present, respect for Emily Harmless, who died to a Machine Cultist before the story began; it's her words that Grace uses for her Limit Break. When Grace meets Emily's killer, she's delighted to spit those words in his face again and kill his ass.
  • Lovable Alpha Bitch: Grace is described by the game page as the "queen bitch of the Academy" but despite having most of the trappings of an Alpha Bitch she's actually quite nice, especially to Sam, who is basically on the opposite end of the popularity scale to her. She also has an incredibly strong sense of justice and kicks off the whole game because she wants to save the world without waiting indifferently as innocent people die.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Grace is the shortest member of the group, but she wields the Sword of Fate and is a competent combatant. She also has exclusive access to Destroy attacks, which include powerful Smite attacks that can sometimes be the only way to kill an opponent under some Devil Clock conditions.
  • Player Character: For one brief interlude in the final battle, Grace becomes the only character other than Sam that the player is playing as.
  • Screw Destiny: Grace doesn't want the world to suffer ten years of degradation by the Machine Devil's cultists while they wait for the legendary hero to wander his way to the Sword, so she steals it to go kick the shit out of the Machine Devil. Unlike many characters who express this trope, Grace gets to find out through Angela that she literally forced fate to yield to her, meaning Grace explicitly defeated her own fate and destiny.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: The inciting incident for the game's plot is because of Grace stealing the Sword of Fate in order to save the land from the Machine Devil and its cultists. Since The Order are indifferent to the plight of innocents, Grace decides to save it herself (and with some help from her group).
  • Stout Strength: The short, chubby Grace is the powerhouse of the party, focused on dealing damage and also wielding the Sword of Fate. This is impressive enough out of battle since it's roughly the size of her body, but it also gives her an extra turn in battle that allows her to deal massive amounts of stagger damage.
  • The Unchosen One: Grace wanted to become the new hero of legend so much that she stole the Sword of Fate and convinced the others to join her on the road trip. However, the Divine Order doesn't consider her the one chosen by fate to wield the sword and believe she's trying to fight the Machine Devil too early. Despite that, she ultimately succeeds and gains the approval of the previous wielder. As Angela states, fate itself yielded to Grace.
  • Violence Really Is the Answer: Grace is a firm proponent of this, pointing out that not attacking the Machine Devil cultists just results in more people getting hurt, and she stands in opposition to the Divine Order allowing it to happen for fear of becoming just as bad as the cultists themselves. She's right, too; her willingness to use violence is what ends the cycle prematurely.
    • The second DLC makes this even more prominent; the alternate Emily Harmless' unwillingness to use violence and to upset Fate made the situation go from bad to worse, and really throws into perspective just how much harm Grace prevented by ending the Machine Devil early.

    Valentin Vaillante

Valentin Vaillante

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gitclvalentin.png
- provides valuable diversity to the group by actually knowing how to drive
Grace's cool non-binary lover, who has the most important job of all: they drive the titular Car.

  • Alliterative Name: Valentin Vaillante.
  • Bare-Fisted Monk: Valentin dishes out punches to enemies with their bare fists, specifically a one-two that ends with an uppercut.
  • Bring It: Their taunt gesture takes the form of this.
  • Counter-Attack: One of the DLC trinkets applies a buff to Valentin that allows them to strike back after being attacked.
  • Damager, Healer, Tank: Valentin is the Tank in this configuration, and exceptionally self-aware about it; they specifically thank Sam for being a healer, since as a person who "gets punched in the face a lot" by their own admission, they appreciate it.
  • Draw Aggro: Valentin's Taunt skills makes it more likely for enemies to target them. Later trinkets give them a version of Taunt that also deals some damage.
  • Establishing Character Moment: In the first cutscene of the game, Valentin confronts a cultist for harassing Sam, refuses to play along with the cultist's bad faith arguments, punches the cultist, and then asks if Sam is okay. This shows that while Valentin is a kind person, they have no patience for evil. This also foreshadows that Valentin has experience in dealing with cultists, specifically their ex-boyfriend Gaius.
  • Holiday Motif: "Valentin" is a variation of "Valentine," and Valentin is fittingly extremely gallant as well as a bit of a flirt, offering assistance and complements to any ladies in the area whenever the opportunity arises. They're also very lovey-dovey with their girlfriend Grace.
  • Lovable Jock: Valentin might come off as a bit of a lunkheaded jock, but they're incredibly kind, offering a lot of advice and guidance to the more self-doubting Sam. They also adore their girlfriend Grace, being nothing less than 100% supportive of her.
  • Meaningful Name: Valentin is a variation of "Valentine," which fits a flirt with a big heart. There's also their last name, Vaillante, which is a variation of vaillant, the French for "valiant."
  • Took a Level in Kindness: In one of the road conversations, they mention they used to use irony in a toxic way, partially due to Gaius's influence, but have since changed their ways.

    Angela

Angela a.k.a. The Thirty-Second Arm of the Divine Order

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gitclangela.png
- does fighting with chains count as kink at pride

The last party member to join; a renegade member of the Divine Order who wants to assist the party in ending the chaos early, instead of sitting around waiting. She's also a bit of a food obsessive.

  • 11th-Hour Superpower: During the final boss fight of DLC 2, Angela wields the alternate timeline's Sword of Fate to help the party defeat Orphan and get them home.
  • Amazing Technicolor Population: She's bright pink.
  • Antiquated Linguistics: Angela has a very antiquated and formal way of talking, occasionally veering into Ye Olde Butcherede Englishe. The presentation of "angel font" in the game furthers the association.
  • Chained by Fashion: Angela is introduced chained to a Machine Devil manifestation, and while the party breaks the chains when you free her, the shackles remain around her wrists, and she keeps the chains for the rest of the game. She actually uses them while fighting to hook onto her opponents for her divebombs. This is actually discussed by the party during the road trip; Angela apparently keeps them so she can strangle the Machine Devil himself with them.
  • De-power: While the rest of the party got weakened by the Adversarial Zodiac, Angela loses all her combat ability due to no longer having any divine power in the alternate timeline. This causes her dialogue to be changed from the angel font to the regular font used by humans.
  • Epiphany Comeback: Angela is benched for most of DLC 2 due to losing her connection to her creator, and she's not allowed to draw power from the creator of the alternate universe. During the final boss of the DLC, she realizes she doesn't have to be defined by her status as an angel of a false god, and that she can choose her own fate. This allows her to wield the alternate universe's Sword of Fate.
  • The Gadfly: Surprisingly, despite her seemingly straight-laced nature, Angela shows glimmers of this from time to time, such as when she lies about her physical appearance being dependent on a person's idea of "the perfect woman" in order to tease Sam. She also manages to trick Valentin into an absolutely epic "Deez Nuts" joke near the end of the game.
  • I Choose to Stay: At the end of the second DLC, Angela becomes the alternate timeline's new wielder of the Sword of Fate. She decides to stay behind to help Alt!Sam rebuild the ruined Kingdom Under Heaven.
  • A Lizard Named "Liz": It doesn't get much more straightforward than an angel named Angela. Given that no other angel even has a name, it's implied that this might be as creative as Angela could be at the time.
  • Neutral No Longer: She's a member of the Divine Order, an organization of angels that refuses to take action against the cult until the 1000 year deadline indicated by the prophecy. However, after the party rescues her from a cyborg dragon, Angela sides with the party.
  • Statuesque Stunner: Played with. She stands tall enough that most party members' heights only reach her chest, but by angel standards, she's of average height.
  • The Unchosen One: At the end of the second DLC, she becomes the hero of the Sword of Fate in the alternate universe, after Emily's untimely death. As an angel who was originally meant to be neutral, she's probably the last person one would expect to wield the sword. Notably, she does so in order to fight the angelic whale Orphan, rather than the Machine Devil that the sword is intended to be used against.
  • Willfully Weak: She can't use her full powers without disrupting the divine cosmology, so she instead limits her strength to match each party member. The party points out this means she's essentially playing dead whenever she's KOed in battle. Thankfully, there's another reason; by basically playing along, it encourages the other angels to not use their full strength, either, which is why the party can overcome two of them who are defending the Machine Devil against the team.

The Machine Devil Cult

    General

A cult that sacrifices innocents in order to revive the Machine Devil, who will slaughter anyone they deem unworthy. They tend to offer up their arms as a sacrifice, turning into various weapons, and practice a lot of human sacrifice.

  • The Bully: Explicitly called out by their phase change; they tend to attack those targets that are already at low health.
  • Hypocrite:
    • They accuse the party of using violence against them, despite how they engage in human sacrifice, murder peaceful protestors, and seek to slaughter "degenerates".
    • When confronted by people who can fight back, they try to rationalize their actions by claiming that they just want to debate and that they have a right to free speech. This falls flat considering they organize "degenerate" book burnings and kill those who protest against them.
    • Ultimately played with. Valentin discusses this trope and states that the cultists don't truly believe in anything except hurting people, and will say whatever they want in service of that goal. This means they are at least partially Straw Hypocrites, since the only genuine part of their rhetoric is how much they want to hurt unwanted groups.
  • Mind Virus: In Act IV, they attain the power to infect people with brainwashing within the Machine Devil's domain, but only if they can get the target to say a specific sentence. Luckily, nobody in the party is willing to claim that 'everything is fine'.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain:
    • The Machine Devil Cultists are white supremacists and Heteronormative Crusaders who want to use the Machine Devil's power to kill anyone they deem "degenerate".
    • Played with when it comes to the Machine Devil itself. While it originated as a primordial destructive flame and claims to be tied to the idea of chaos itself, it spews sexist and transphobic lines to pick at the protagonists' insecurities. Whether it was influenced by its modern day followers, always held these views, or is just going along with them in order to hurt others isn't clarified, but it's clear that it's perfectly willing to go along with its followers' bigotry to cause as much harm as possible, both emotional and physical.

    Gaius

Gaius

  • An Arm and a Leg: After his boss battle, Valentin states Gaius's arm is mangled from the Machine Devil's power backfiring on him.
  • Barrier Change Boss: He can change his elemental affinity, meaning the player has to make sure they're using the correct element, a non-elemental attack, or a nuke attack to avoid healing him.
  • Faux Affably Evil: He sounds more philosophical and polite than the average cultist and expresses false reluctance over fighting Valentin, but he's just as bigoted and cruel as his allies.
  • Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist: He claims that he has more in common politically with the party than they think, and that he's trying to create a fair society. However, he scapegoats marginalized groups for all the problems of society, victim-blames anyone killed by the cult, and wants to wipe out all "degenerates", making it clear he cares more about harming groups he hates than actually improving society.
  • Psycho Ex-Boyfriend: He is Kat's ex-boyfriend, and the latter asks the party to stop Gaius from stalking her. Gaius also turns out to be Valentin's ex, and the former mocks the latter for changing their gender identity.
  • Utility Party Member: Deconstructed. His schtick is that he uses his psychic connection with his exes to change classes on the fly - and when he feels like it, discards them for a quick power boost.

    Dylan Southwind

Dylan Southwind

The Machine Cultist who killed Emily Harmless. The only person arrested for the attacks that led to Emily's death, even though everyone knows that multiple people were involved.

  • Create Your Own Hero: He killed Emily Harmless, turning her into an Inspirational Martyr for Grace. This results in Grace stealing the Sword of Fate and sealing the Machine Devil much sooner than in the timeline where Emily survived.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: He's mentioned in the Travel Story for the Protest Sign, which can be obtained long before he appears in the main story.
  • Enemy Mine: Normally, the Divine Order and Machine Devil Cult are supposed to be enemies, but they release him so that he can prevent the party from defeating the Machine Devil before the 1000 year deadline. He even refers to this as the only "based" decision they've ever made.
  • Karmic Death: If the Devil Clock is on, only a Smite attack can kill him... and Grace, who idolizes the woman he killed, is the one with Smite attacks in the party. He's even this if the player just uses a Knife to do it instead; Dylan thinks he's a big shot, but he goes down like a punk to a common knife.
  • Kill It with Fire: The Divine Order originally imprisoned him for killing Emily Harmless; as detailed in the Protest Sign's Travel Story, he hurled a piece of flaming debris at her and her protest sign when she and other librarians tried to stop the cultists from burning "degenerate" books, and she died of severe burns.
  • Taking You with Me: As he dies, he uses himself as the sacrifice to unseal the Machine Devil.
  • Zero-Effort Boss: He's fought between the angel duo and Jonivanjo's first phase. He goes down in one hit note .

    Jonivanjo the Machine Devil

Jonivanjo

The Machine Devil. He's not awake yet, but he's getting there, and when he awakens he'll do tremendous harm to everyone around him. His cultists are doing that harm now, so Grace sets out to beat him before he fully wakes up.

  • Big Bad: Jonivanjo the Machine Devil is an Ancient Evil being that is fated to appear every millennium to kill everyone that his bigoted cultists hate. He grants cyborg powers to his cultists so they can break his seal before the 1000-year deadline.
  • Evil Is Burning Hot: Fire is heavily associated with the Machine Devil. Because he started out as a primordial flame. He's not Fire elemental, but he does use it in a lot of his attacks.
  • Evil Is Petty: He proves himself to be the villain everyone says he is by spending the first few minutes of his awakening forcing the party to insult and torture themselves.
  • Faux Affably Evil: He doesn't bother putting up a front in the main timeline, but in the alternate timeline where he possesses Jo's body, he occasionally talks in a friendly manner towards Emily and Alt!Sam in order to guilt trip them and convince them to give up on saving the world.
  • Godhood Seeker: In the second DLC, he plans to use Jo's connection to a star in order to gain godly power.
  • Leaking Can of Evil: Even when partially sealed, he can summon demonic cyborg minions and turn his human followers into cyborgs. In the second DLC, his main body is sealed, but he can still control Jo by using her lingering feelings for Emily.
  • Made of Evil: The Machine Devil started as an unstoppable flame created for the sole purpose of burning away overgrown plant life, but in the present, he claims to be a "meme" representing the idea of chaos, and that he'll come back as long as people seek this idea.
  • Mechanical Abomination: He and his minions take the form of demonic creatures with various mechanical parts.
  • One-Winged Angel: His first form is a humanoid demon that acts separately from his inactive main body, his second form is the gigantic main body with multiple targets, and his third form is an angelic figure who sits in a floating vehicle. Interestingly, the final phase visually consists of Grace fighting the third form and the rest of the party still fighting the second form.
  • Satanic Archetype: Not only does he bring out the worst in humanity by encouraging bigotry, he's also a divinely created being of destruction who turned against his creators. Worse yet, he is capable of preying on the inner darkness of anyone he interacts with, as shown when he speaks in the party's voice to make them lose their resolve and when he uses Jo as a mouthpiece to guilt-trip Emily and Prince Sam. Even after his defeat in the alternate timeline, his rampage already destroyed the Kingdom Under Heaven's sense of community and caused Apocalypse Anarchy.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: The goal of every wielder of the Sword of Fate is to seal away the Machine Devil, but they don't have the power to kill him permanently.
  • The Voiceless: A disturbingly talkative variant. The Machine Devil never actually speaks, you see, but instead steals the party's voices to speak, which is freaky. In the alternate timeline, he steals Jo's voice to speak while possessing her.

DLC Characters

    Jill Gamesh

Jill Gamesh

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gitcljillann.png
- a DOG (??) who is MARRIED (???)

  • All or Nothing: After the party completes her "quests", she almost keeps her word and returns the Sword of Fate to them... but when Ann doesn't want to give up the "shiny", Jill instead offers a boss fight, with the winner keeping both the Sword of Fate AND the Zantetsuken she dropped earlier.
  • Beast Man: She has the proportions of a humanoid woman larger than Angela, but she's also covered in blue fur and has the head and feet of a dog.
  • Combat Medic: She wields the Sword of Fate, along with several other weapons, in her boss fight. Every time she uses the Sword of Fate, she heals a portion of her HP to mirror how Grace can heal the party with it.
  • Dimensional Traveler: She appears on the boardwalk out of thin air, and claims to have travelled across multiple dimensions in search of rare swords to steal.
  • Expy: Of Gilgamesh from Final Fantasy. In character, if not appearance.
  • Fetch Quest: She gives the party a chance to prove their worth and regain the Sword of Fate after she steals it, but only if they can succeed at her challenges, one of which is to gather keys she's given to various beachgoers. Grace and Angela quickly mock the concept of a dog lady asking them to go fetch.
  • Multi-Armed and Dangerous: The fight against her at the end of her DLC shows that, like her inspiration, she has multiple arms under her cloak in order to wield various swords at once.
  • Punny Name: Jill Gamesh → Gilgamesh.

    Ann Kidu

Ann Kidu

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gitcljillann.png
Grrraaoo!

  • Expy: Of Enkidu from Final Fantasy. In character, if not appearance.
  • Messy Hair: There are actual twigs sticking out of her hair at all times.
  • Punny Name: Ann Kidu → Enkidu.
  • Vapor Wear: There are no straps of underclothes seen through the side of her poncho, adding to her Wild Child image.
  • Wild Child: She's called as such by the narration, which also points out that she's technically a wild adult but the rhyme sounds better.
  • You No Take Candle: Ann mostly communicates through grunts and howls, but she still understands enough words to object to the party taking back their "shiny".

    Emily Harmless

Emily Harmless

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/emilysheet.png
BATTLE SPECIALTY: FATE

  • Alternate Universe Reed Richards Is Awesome: In the main universe, Emily Harmless was a librarian who was killed while trying to stop Machine Cultists from burning books. Not so much here.
  • And Then What?: She notes that although she sealed the Machine Devil, the Kingdom Under Heaven is still collectively traumatized by the destruction caused by the cult and that it'll be difficult to rebuild their sense of community. She worries that now that she's gotten so used to fighting, she might not be capable of uniting the populace, though Grace assures her that in the main timeline, she was a capable community organizer.
  • Assist Character: She isn't a fully playable unit with her own rank and HP, but she does use the Sword of Fate action in place of Grace, who cannot use her own Sword of Fate in an alternate timeline.
  • Badass Bookworm: Activist, scholar, master's degree in library science, and The Chosen One to seal away the Machine Devil.
  • Badass Creed: She's the one who inspired the catchphrase, "I won't falter in the face of evil," which was the text on her protest sign. However, unlike Grace and Angela, she doesn't say this catchphrase when using the Sword of Fate. It's implied that she's too jaded and weary to yell such a catchphrase anymore. However, Valentin notes that she still lives up to the catchphrase with her actions, since she refuses Jonivanjo's temptations and sacrifices herself to prevent him from possessing Jo.
  • Charged Attack: Her version of the Sword of Fate has a Fate meter, which charges up as the party deals damage, but resets if she uses the Sword of Fate. If she uses it with a full meter, her attack deals high exploit damage in addition to the usual stagger damage.
  • The Chosen One: In the alternate universe, she's the one chosen to wield the Sword of Fate in order to seal the Machine Devil. The party believes she was meant to be the hero in the main timeline too, but Dylan Southwind killed her long before the sword could officially choose her.
  • Heroic Suicide: After the penultimate boss fight of DLC 2, she learns that Jo's feelings for her keeps the latter anchored to the mortal plane, which means Jonivanjo will keep reviving and possessing Jo. In order to stop this endless cycle, she and Jo jump off the tower at the peak of the Clouded Mountain so that they can be Together in Death.
  • Hero of Another Story: Played with. While her death in the main universe is one of Grace's major influences, this Emily was chosen to stop the Machine Devil.
  • Knight in Sour Armor: She had to live through the Machine Devil's decade-long rampage of destruction, witnessing much of the world burn and seeing her fellow people turn on each other out of desperation. By the time she's chosen as the hero, she has lost her faith in the Divine Order and realizes that even if she wins, she'll only be welcomed back to a civilization on the brink of collapse. Even after defeating the Machine Devil, the latter takes control of Jo's corpse in order to continually hound her. All of this made Emily very cynical by the time the DLC starts, but she continues to wield the Sword of Fate in order to save what's left of the world.
  • Knightly Sword and Shield: Wields the Sword of Fate and the Shield of Fate.
  • The Needs of the Many: Deconstructed. She went along with the Divine Order's schedule for sealing the Machine Devil because she didn't want to risk all of humanity on the chance that the Machine Devil can be defeated faster. Unfortunately, not only is it actually possible to win earlier, now she has to deal with the Apocalypse Anarchy that follows the near-destruction of the Kingdom Under Heaven. Although she tries to justify this decision as being more cautious, she seems to regret it, given how disillusioned she is at the Divine Order.
  • Rebuilt Pedestal: In the base game, Grace looks up to Emily as a hero who won't falter in the face of evil. In the second DLC, she's disappointed that the alternate Emily is both very jaded of heroics and followed the Divine Order's schedule to seal the Machine Devil, causing friction between the two. When Emily jumps off the Clouded Mountain with Jo in order to defeat Jonivanjo, Grace reaffirms that Emily is her hero.
  • Take Up My Sword: Right before she and Jo jump to their deaths, she gives her sword to Alt!Sam. However, it's Angela who becomes the next wielder of the sword, though Sam still takes up Emily's duty to restore order to the world.

The Crown Prince of the Kingdom Under Heaven (UNMARKED SPOILERS FOR CORE GAME)

Prince Sam Under Heaven

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screen_shot_2022_10_27_at_33833_pm.png
BATTLE SPECIALTY: EXPLOIT/RAVAGE

  • Alternate Self: A version of Sam from the other universe where Emily Harmless took up the sword of fate.
  • Crutch Character: The other party members are weakened by the Adversarial Zodiac due to being from another timeline. For the early part of DLC 2, Sam is the only party member who can fight at full power.
  • Enemy Without: He states that during his journey, like the main timeline Sam, he fought the version of himself that never transitioned, and she looked just like the main timeline Sam.
  • Grass is Greener: He sees his Exploit skillset as something most other people can do, and therefore he believes he doesn't bring anything unique to combat. This is in contrast to the main timeline Sam, who has a complex about lacking Exploit actions despite having the rare Support specialty.
  • Moveset Clone: Downplayed. He takes Angela's place in the party in the second DLC, and like her, he uses Exploit and Ravage skills. However, his sprite wields a sword while Angela's sprite wields chains.
  • My Future Self and Me: Played with. Although the current calendar year of both universes is the same, the length of the Machine Devil cycle is different. As a result, Alt!Sam is about 10 years older than Prime!Sam.
  • Perky Goth: His character description states that he likes the Goth aesthetic like his main timeline counterpart and that he hollers about how the void belongs to everyone, though he wears his royal military uniform as a party member because he's officially representing the Kingdom Under Heaven.
  • Red Herring: The main timeline Sam initially assumed that Alt!Sam is a version of her who never transitioned. It turns out that Alt!Sam is a trans man.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: The heir to the throne of the Kingdom Under Heaven, and Emily Harmless' close ally on the battlefield. He also plans on rebuilding civilization after the Machine Devil is properly sealed away.
  • Suave Sabre: Wields one, but he states that his sword is ceremonial and isn't actually suited for combat.
  • Warrior Prince: He uses both Exploit and Ravage skills, and he's the prince of the Kingdom Under Heaven.

Jo

I'm your harrowing. Your heartbreak.
Click here to see her with her party before her death

  • Be Careful What You Wish For: After death, she isn't ready to let go of Emily and still wants to be with her. Jonivanjo exploits these feelings for his own purposes to keep her soul anchored to the world as his vessel, forcing Jo to fight Emily forever.
  • Combat Medic: Alt!Sam mentions that Jo handled the party's healing. She also wields a bow, meaning she likely had either Exploit or Destroy in addition to Support.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: According to the Broken Arrow lore, Jo was trapped in a controlling and abusive relationship with Cass, a Machine Devil cultist, who told her that the heroes will ostracize her for being associated with the cult. Fortunately, Emily and Sam convinced her otherwise.
  • Fighting from the Inside: She sometimes manages to temporarily break free from Jonivanjo's control to say something in her own words. At the Clouded Mountain, she resists Jonivanjo's control and jumps off the mountain with Emily to ensure that she can no longer be possessed.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: She took a fatal blow in battle against the Machine Devil in order to save Emily.
  • People Puppets: Both metaphorically — her body is being puppeteered by the Machine Devil — and literally: when fighting Jo, her body hangs from marionette strings.
  • Posthumous Character: By the time the player meets Jo, the original Jo is long-dead, and her body is being used as a conduit by the Machine Devil to hurt the people who cared about her.
  • Recurring Boss: Recurring miniboss, but close enough. At each gas stop, she will prevent the party from using the healing prayer statues until she is defeated.
  • Star Power: She is connected to a star that has god-tier power, and the Divine Order imprisoned her to keep her power out of the Machine Devil's hands.
