Characters / Dragon Ball Multiverse Universe 18

Go To

The Main Timeline

U18 is the standard universe that follows the manga and anime story. The fighters in this universe include Goku, Vegeta note , Uub note , Pan note  and Goten & Trunks as Gotenks note . Gohan, Videl, Piccolo, and Bra are spectators.

In General

  • Audience Surrogate: The "main" universe of DBM, and the introductory viewpoint to the story.
  • Combat Commentator: They all do a lot of commenting on the fights, and we often see their reaction to things.
  • Out of Focus: As a whole (and especially for Goku), U18 hasn't received all that much attention in the main story compared to some other universes. Salagir promises this will eventually change.
  • Static Character: For the most part they're this, although Vegeta, Pan and Uub are exceptions, as they do get some development, but the rest aren't so lucky.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Downplayed. Although Goku and Vegeta are one of the most powerful contestants, they are ultimately outclassed by the likes of Bra, Vegito, and U4 Buu. But their true strength lies in their wisdom as warriors, honed by decades of experience and Character Development. This leads to the both of them unlocking an awakened state that allows them to use their full power without needing to transform into Super Saiyans, something that not even Vegito was able to do.

    Goku

Goku

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/u18_goku.png
  • Advertised Extra: Goku's picture is used to represent DBM overall, and he shows up once in a while in covers, but Goku for most of the story is a glorified extra.
  • Combat Commentator: He mostly comments about the fights, explaining how transformations work, comparing the power levels the current fighters have with others he fought in the past, and also the tactics they use compared to their counterparts from his universe.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Until Uub every fight he's had in the tournament has been lopsided in his favor. This gets turned around on him when Uub uses Kaioken Transcended, wiping the floor with Goku in short order and only losing because of the Kaioken's drawbacks.
  • Foil: To U16 Vegito, as the de facto leaders of their respective universes. Goku is humble, relaxed, and involved, while Vegito is arrogant, irritated, and aloof. Many of the problems U16 suffers as a universe, right down to the Son and Briefs families themselves, are the result of Goku not being there.
  • Nice Guy: Freely offers his Dragon Ball wish to U19, should he win the tournament.
  • Out of Focus: Much of U18 suffers from this but Goku in particular has it worse. Despite being the main character of the entire Dragon Ball franchise, Goku hasn't been seen that much in DBM so far. All his battles have been fairly short, and he hasn't had much going on outside his tournament matches.
  • The Leader: Not only of U18, but he also takes the lead among the stranded contestants in finding the arena when they all get teleported away by Babidi.
  • Single-Stroke Battle: Technically, he won his first three tournament matches like this.
  • So Proud of You: He makes it quite clear that after his fight with Uub. He's extremely proud of the latter's growth even if he lost.
  • Worthy Opponent: After his fight with Uub in the tournament he states that from now on whenever they practice it'll be as equals rather then as master and pupil.
    Vegeta

Vegeta

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/u18_vegeta.png
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Could pinpoint where Cell was hiding his core after seeing his movements and which part of his body he was guarding, and goad him into weakening himself before baiting him with a Senzu and going for the killing blow.
  • Badass Arm-Fold: He's the only character who doesn't shield his eyes when Cell uses the Solar Flare against Dabura, instead staying in this pose.
  • Blood Knight: Downplayed. Vegeta still has his Saiyan lust for battle but he's able to keep it in check these days, such as refusing to fight his U13 counterpart when provoked because there's more important things to do.
  • Character Development: He's mellowed out a lot since the Buu saga, his rivalry with Goku is a lot healthier (envy at his U13 counterpart smashing in Goku's U3 counterpart's head aside) he's a lot more lenient when it comes to his children and he finally begins to call Goku by his Earth name after defeating Kakarot. It's gotten to the point that Babidi can't sense evil in him anymore.
  • Combat Pragmatist: When it comes time to fight Cell he decides to stock up on Senzu beans and immediately goes for a kienzan attack after baiting Cell to attack first.
  • Guile Hero: Has to be this. He first derides SSJ3 as an Awesome, but Impractical costly transformation that leaves the user drained, letting Cell think he would never use it, implying he has something better up his sleeve. Then he goes and offers a Senzu bean... but as Cell remarks with a smirk that he has mellowed a lot, Vegeta actually jumps in as SSJ3 for a sucker punch to the gut, likely intending to catch the Senzu Cell failed to use, thus compensating for the power consumption issue, and STILL not revealing his ace in the hole.
    • There is a bit of Fridge Brilliance in this: In canon, when Vegeta faced Cell, he refused to use the Ultra Super Saiyan muscle-bound form, as it would make him too slow to be efficient. Of COURSE then Cell would be led to think Vegeta rated the SSJ3 form as useless as the USSJ, thus deliberately sealing it. It also nicely shows how much Vegeta has evolved.
  • Cool Uncle: To Pan. It's his encouragement that keeps her from forfeiting against Kakarot, and he also has her go in alone, instead of Gohan, to rescue Videl from Majinized crowd members.
  • Foil: To U16 Vegito. Though Vegeta shares some of the key traits of Vegito as he is Vegito's component, Vegeta is far more mature and willing to set aside his pride and arrogance to protect his family.
  • Papa Wolf:
    • Nearly jumps in to kill Hatchiyak himself when he feels his daughter is at risk.
    • Cell threatening his daughter is enough for him to use (fake) senzu beans during their match, something he would never do even in life or death circumstances. In fact his ego has at times driven him to allow an enemy to reach their full potential so he can beat them at their best. Instead he tricks Cell into thinking he’s giving him a bean as a distraction in order to kill him.
  • "Reason You Suck" Speech: Gives one to both his U10 and U13 counterparts, as well as Kakarot.
  • So Proud of You: To U12 Trunks, after their fight.
    "It wasn't bad, my son."
  • The Lancer: While still Goku's dedicated rival, Vegeta no longer bears a grudge against his fellow Saiyan and doesn't mind working alongside him.
    Gohan

Gohan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/u18_gohan.png
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Deduces that he and U16 Gohan think the same way and therefore can act in perfect unison.
  • Deadly Disc: Creates an absolutely massive Destructo Disc to try and kill Babidi.
  • Foil: To U16 Gohan. The two are nigh-identical in most ways (and U18 Gohan counts on this at points), but there are still slight differences in personality between the two. For one, U18 Gohan is a bit calmer, while U16 Gohan twice powers up from rage during the Majin Rebellion. For another, during the fight with Majin Bra, when she takes a senzu bean and recovers all damage the Gohans had managed to inflict, U16 Gohan gives up and lets Bra kill him, while U18 Gohan keeps fighting and plans with U11 Buu.
  • Laser Blade: He reveals he can make a small, Sauza-esque one of these in the fight against Majin Bra.
  • Papa Wolf: Downplayed. Gohan is protective of Pan, but he also understands it's important for her to be strong. He negotiates with U13, not so Kakarot will forfeit to Pan, but that he just won't be sadistic.
  • World's Strongest Man: Gohan still retains this position in his universe. Goku even admits he's not sure if he could beat Gohan despite training a lot more than him.
    Pan

Pan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/u18pan.PNG
  • Adaptational Badass: A lot more competent than GT Pan, being able to hold her own against powerful enemies. Also, she learns how to go Super Saiyan.
  • Badass Adorable: Just like any incarnation of Pan.
  • Child Prodigy: Being the child of Gohan and personally trained by Goku will do this for you. Unlike GT Pan (who the creators openly admit to despising, along with GT in general), U18 Pan is a capable fighter, having trained under Goku. Unlike U16 Pan, however, she isn't able to transform into a Super Saiyan. Until her fight with U13 Kakarot pushed her to that level, that is.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Or in this case "like grandfather like granddaughter". Pan is just like Goku in Dragon Ball, wearing his gi, using his power pole, and even knows his Rock-Scissors-Paper technique.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: Against U13 Kakarot. Despite unlocking Super Saiyan, she acknowledges he remains out of her league and forfeits the fight before things can go the way of her U16 counterpart.
  • Older Than She Looks: Pan is 14 years old by the time of DBM, but looks much younger. Once Asura stepped in as the main artist of the comic, he began to draw her as looking closer to her age.
  • Pintsized Powerhouse: Though the smallest and youngest member of U18 at age fourteen, she can kick more ass than most adults.
  • Rage Breaking Point: U13 Kakarot mockingly asking her if she'd like to know what he did to little girls on Earth, with all the ugly implications of that, sets her off in major way and gives her the push to go Super Saiyan.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Pan is pushed into transforming into a Super Saiyan by U13 Kakarotto.
  • Uneven Hybrid: Pan is a quarter Saiyan through her grandfather Goku and three-quarters human.
    Uub

Uub

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/u18uub.PNG
  • Adaptational Badass: In the novelization, after picking up magic Uub displays a Majin Buu-style Healing Factor. This is not shown in the comic version of the fight, and it's unclear if comic Uub can do this.
  • Awesome, but Impractical: The Kaioken. Thanks to a higher base strength compared to everyone else the boost that Kaioken gives him is big enough that at max output it only makes him slightly weaker than SSJ3 Goku, but the stress on his body is bad enough that even a SSJ3 can outlast him in a fight. The transcended version is even worse. While it allows Uub to curbstomp Goku the stress it puts on his body is so bad that in the end Uub is knocked out and left in a worse state than Goku despite not getting hit once while using it.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Though he can overpower U11 Buu temporarily through use of the Kaioken, in the end he wins by exploiting a technicality in one of the tournament rules. U4 Buu also trains him to use his magic to overcome opponents who are otherwise stronger, faster, and smarter than he is.
  • Foil: To U16 Bra. Both are students of their universes' greatest hero and have been trained to be said hero's successor. Both came into being as a result of the Z-Fighters' final confrontation with Majin Buu (Uub is the purified reincarnation of Kid Buu, while Bra is the child of the fusion to defeat Buu) and both want their teacher's approval. While Uub is a Nice Guy with a good relationship with the people in his universe (and particularly Goku), U16 Bra is a jerkass with a strained relationship with most of her family (particularly Vegito). Additionally, Bra has a Superpowered Evil Side in the form of SS2 while Uub is specifically noted in the novelization to not have any such darkness inside him. Lastly, Uub wants nothing to do with Babidi and expresses contempt for the wizard, while Bra ultimately falls prey to Babidi's Majin Spell and seems to enjoy the result.
  • Forced Transformation: Turns U11 Buu into a watermelon at one point by reflecting a spell.
  • Guile Hero:
    • Attempts to trick U11 Buu into losing during their battle.
    • Also pushes a SSJ3 Goku into backing away from an attack in a position of advantage by pretending to use magic to turn Goku into candy. Turns out he can't.
  • Hulking Out: Kaioken Transcended has him noticeably bulk up when using it.
  • Kung-Fu Wizard: After a little intervention by U4 Buu, Uub can supplement his high power and combat skill with magical abilities inherited from Kid Buu. Later gets some more hands-on training from Buu (literally) to develop this further.
  • Plot-Relevant Age-Up: For most of the comic, Uub is about one head shorter than his teacher Goku. After their fight, Uub is suddenly able to look Goku in the eyes, signifying he is no longer Goku's student, but his peer. What keeps this from being Soap Opera Rapid Aging Syndrome or even Off-Model is Asura saying that Uub's Kaioken Transcended caused the physical change, though exactly why is still not explained.
  • Significant Wardrobe Shift: After his fight with Goku he ends up getting a unique set of clothes after previously wearing a copy of Goku's clothes to signify him graduating from being Goku's apprentice.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: Subverted. In the novelization, U16 Gohan wonders after seeing Uub use magic if something of Buu's mind might exist inside of him and come out when angered. Vegito claims King Yemma wouldn't have allowed something like that.
  • The Apprentice: He's been this to Goku since the end of Z. He graduates from this after their tournament fight.
  • Token Minority: The only member of U18 (if not the entire tournament) who is dark-skinned. There's even a minicomic that jokes about it.
    Goten and Trunks/Gotenks

Goten and Trunks/Gotenks

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/u18_goten_and_trunks.png
  • Determinator: Goten knows he is no match for Majin Cell Jrs. or Majin Kakarot, but he'll still fight them anyway.
  • He Is All Grown Up: While adult Goten and Trunks had already appeared, adult Gotenks never had.
  • Humiliating Wager: Them and their U16 counterparts are subjected to this after their elimination, and are forced to be servants for the other characters of U16 and U18.
  • Kid Hero All Grown-Up: They're both still very immature despite being adults by the time of this series. Personality-wise, Gotenks hasn't changed at all.
  • Large Ham: Gotenks is easily the hammiest, flashiest character in the series, who never stops flaunting around how awesome he his.
  • Loop Hole Abuse: Goten and Trunks thought entering the contest as Gotenks was considered this, but turns out the Vargas don't really care.
  • Other Me Annoys Me: Played with. While initially they're quite excited to meet their U16 doppelgangers, when they are pitted against each other they keep making the exact same moves, leading to a very long, frustrating, drawn-out battle. Neither side could win until an accident on U16 Trunks' part broke the tie.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Gotenks is undoubtedly powerful, being a fusion of two Saiyans. However, he has a habit of underestimating his opponents while still displaying the same arrogance.
  • Smug Super: Even more smug than the likes of Vegito and Cell.
  • Spanner in the Works: Goten, due to not being teleported with the other contestants, is able to sneak up on the Cell Jrs keeping U18 hostage and distract them long enough for Piccolo to grab Videl and Bra and run away while Gohan deals with the Jrs.

    Bra Briefs

Bra Briefs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/u18_bra.png
  • Awesome, but Impractical: Much like Gohan in Dragon Ball canon, her mix of Saiyan and human genetics lets her display enormous strength when pushed, even without training to back it up. Like Gohan during the fight with Raditz, Bra manages to land a surprise blow on Majin Nappa that temporarily staggers him. Also like Gohan before he was trained as a fighter, such a burst of strength does not make a fighter on its own, and once he has his bearings Majin Nappa makes short work of her.
  • Break the Cutie: The Majin rebellion as a whole took a toll on her due to her close brushes with death, but Cell killing Videl absolutely breaks her. The sight of him regenerating from Gohan's attack and approaching her leaves her a frightened wreck.
  • Daddy's Girl: She and Vegeta are affectionate with each other, with her calling him "Daddy" and him cradling her during Hatchiyak's scream.
  • Deadpan Snarker: She enjoys teasing Trunks, Goten, and Pan. Her humor isn't mean-spirited or insulting, though, and she never gets after her elders, unlike her U16 counterpart.
  • Foil: To U16 Bra, obviously. U18 Bra is weaker and doesn't train... but she is a whole lot nicer. This is best seen in the Majin Arc, where U16 Bra is a willing Majin murdering her friends and family with a smile on her face. U18 Bra, on the other hand, is struggling to survive and getting horribly broken by the carnage regarding her friends and family. When she's cradling U18 Gohan after he was injured by U16 Bra, Majin Bra mocks her as her "Evil Twin." Invoked in-universe when Grand Supreme Kai sees this and notes the similarity and differences.
  • Girly Girl: Enjoys shopping, keeping up on the latest fashions, and flirting with boys.
  • It's All My Fault: Blames herself for U18 Videl's death during the Majin Rebellion, saying that if only she'd been stronger, it wouldn't have happened.
  • Other Me Annoys Me: Humorously invoked when interacting with her U16 self. Bra believes her U16 counterpart needs to get a life when the latter comments on how she spent most of her life training. This becomes a lot more serious when U18 Bra sees how much of a monster her counterpart has become as a Majin and is outraged and disgusted by her actions.
  • Painted-On Pants: Wears a pair of very tight jeans.
  • Trauma Conga Line: Oh boy. In short order: she's hit with Hatchiyak's scream, which hurts her badly enough that Vegeta is seconds away from jumping into the ring; she's caught up in the Majin Rebellion and held hostage by the Cell Juniors; she's brutalized by Majin Nappa; gets a front row seat to Cell murdering Videl (which leaves her sobbing and blaming herself for not being strong enough to stop it); is confronted by a not dead Cell who reveals he plans on throwing her into the melee to motivate the Gohans (leaving her terrified and shaking); and when she enters the stadium, she arrives in time to see her U16 counterpart seriously injure, if not outright kill, her universe's Gohan. After everything, it's small wonder she breaks down crying and begging Gohan to Please Wake Up.
  • "Reason You Suck" Speech: Gives a rather effective and scathing one to Majin Bra pointing out her hypocrisy for sacrificing her free will for power and brushing off all her attempts to gain sympathy.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Comparatively. She doesn't know how to fight (or even fly), but she's still strong enough to land a surprise blow on Majin Nappa. Once Majin Nappa gets his bearings, though, he easily mops the floor with her.
  • Superpowerful Genetics: Since she's Vegeta's daughter, she's (relatively) massively strong despite never training a day in her life, something Videl thinks isn't fair.

    Videl

Videl

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/u18_videl.png
  • Back in the Saddle: Even after years of motherhood, when ambushed in the U18 apartments by Majinized spectators, Videl doesn't need help fighting them off.
  • No Body Left Behind: Her body gets vaporized in the cross-fire when U16 Gohan reached his Rage Breaking Point and blasts her killer into smithereens.
  • The Team Normal: Though she has fighting experience and is quite strong by human standards, Videl is the only member of U18 who is a full-blooded, normal human and, as such, is far weaker than almost everyone in the story besides the spectators.
