Heliorians

U19 consists of several fighters from the planet Helior, who fight using nanotechnology and advanced armor instead of ki like other fighters. Helior lived peacefully in other universes, but Frieza attacked the planet in this one, causing the Heliorians to fight back and defeat him. The fighters in this universe are Tidar note , Xeniloum note , and Eleim note . The spectators are Phipsil, Naurb, Magsuns, Loopwhirl and Nedwook.

In General

  • Absurdly Sharp Blade: God's Blade definitely qualifies, capable of slicing through the ring, as well as cut a Super Saiyan and critically wound a Super Saiyan 2. At the same time. The ultra armor's finger-laser used by Eleim and Xeniloum can even cut through the audience's shield, and said shield was strong enough to withstand SS2 Vegetto's and Broly's ki attacks' clash, with only 1% going through, while 100% of the finger laser went through.
  • All There in the Manual: Magsuns and Phipsil haven't been named in the main comic as of 2023, and both Naurb and Nedwook didn't have their names mentioned until the Majin rebellion. It's specially noticeable with Phipsil since she became U19's representative after the Majin rebellion, and her name still isn't mentioned.
  • Apocalypse How: Carbonite turns everything it touches into more of itself. The Heliorians accidentally unleashed it on their planet basically causing a "Grey Goo" event (apparently it can't spread by air, though...) The destruction level is planetary with physical annihilation. The Heliorians worry that an asteroid impacting the planet could start the spread of the stuff throughout the universe eventually turning all physical matter into carbonite. The only way to get rid of it for sure is to completely vaporize it (like with Buu). Needless to say, they don't have the power to completely wipe out their own planet.
  • Artificial Gravity: The Ultra Armor can increase the weight of what its wearer touches.
  • Awesome, but Impractical: The Ultra Armors are amazing suits of armors that make the wearers stronger than the likes of SSJ3s but it also has a very limited battery supply. Phipsil runs out of power twice during the course of the Majin rebellion.
  • Badass Bystander: All the non-participants don't hesitate to join in the fight when Babidi attempts to take over the tournament. It ends with every single one of them dying.
  • Badass Normal: In a tournament where all the other competitors are insanely powerful, these guys have the balls to compete without any special powers whatsoever.
  • Characterization Marches On:
    • There's little that suggests Heliotes are team players early on, as they don't comment they're out of their element when fighting 1vs1, and the most obvious contrast is how they react to Boo's first rebellion, where they're overwhelmed like everyone else, whereas in the second one they form a barrier not unlike the one U18 formed both times, and while Zen Buu snuck inside U18's barrier, he didn't penetrate U19's.
    • They were the characters who took death the most seriously in the tournament to the point they dedicated a meal to Tidar after he got killed by Uub, afterwards though, they're rather casual about death, with no one calling out Elleim on killing the audience during his fight with Bra until he threatened to use Carbonite, Nedwook quickly telling Phipsil to fight after the other Heliotes got killed at the beginning of the Majin rebellion (Though that is justified by it happening on the middle of the battlefield), and neither Elleim, Tidar and Xeniloum reacting much to seeing the dead Heliotes after the Majin rebellion, to the point they have no reaction at all after learning that Bra killed both Nedwook and Phipsil and Elleim just suggests to gather the dragon balls to bring everyone back.
  • Chekhov's Skill: The Heliotes' armor is controlled by brainwaves... which is possibly how Phipsil gets hers to shoot Bra even when she's taken it off.
  • Combat Pragmatist: All of them. Notable examples:
    • Eleim in his fight with Bra used every trick at his disposal, and even was willing to use carbonite to win, despite the possible risks.
    • Nedwook risked killing a friendly during the Majin Rebellion if it meant killing two enemies for sure. Thankfully, North Kai was able to dodge in time.
    • Phipsil shoots U11 Dabura in the back in combat and also comes up with an Indy Ploy to try and defeat Majin Bra.
    • Nedwook and Phipsil are also willing to work with U17 Cell despite him being their enemy earlier.
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique: Carbonite. Seeing what it did to their homeworld (and getting rid of it is the entire reason they're at the tournament), only the most desperate of circumstances justify its use in battle.
  • Deflector Shields: Their armor comes with them. They are impressively powerful, able to tank shots from Super Saiyan 1 Bra and Super Saiyan 3 Gotenks.
  • Due to the Dead: When Tidar dies, his fellows quietly spend their next meal in silence in memory of him. This serious treatment of death foreshadows that Universe 19 has no experience with Dragon Balls, unlike the main cast of Dragon Ball.
  • Early Installment Character-Design Difference: The Heliotes seen in the first few hundred pages are much more diverse and exotic in appearance, with heavier armor, visors, and faceplates, and some even carrying massive guns as weapons. Their looks become more uniform and generic when the ultra armors are introduced in the latter half of the first round.
  • Forgot About His Powers: Despite Nedwook seeing firsthand just how potent Cell's healing is during the tournament, when fighting him during the Majin rebellion, he never uses "Farewell Buu" on him to try to deal with it.
  • Future Spandex: All the Heliotes wear this under their Powered Armor, except for Tidar.
  • The Generic Guy: While U19 is one of the largest universes at the tournament in number of attendees (with eight people present), they are by far the least defined and developed in terms of characterization and design, with the author himself mixing up their names on occasion. Their roster wasn't finalized until almost 10 years after the comic began, and even then many of them are Red Shirts at best, with no apparent personality traits besides "warrior" and maybe "pragmatic". Changing to Ultra armors did them no favors since they got the same designs and equipment, and they all fight the same way. There's a reason why only three of the eight have entries on this page.
  • Identical Stranger: Across different media but, Xeniloum has the same face and hair as GT Goten.
  • Incorruptible Pure Pureness: U19 is one of the most openly heroic universes, as evidenced by seven of their eight-person group were not corrupted by Babidi.
  • Laser Blade: Their ultra armors are capable of generating energy blades from their wrists for close combat.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: Once they saw how formidable the competition is, they decide to upgrade to their ultra armors, and don't hesitate to use carbonite if necessary.
  • Living MacGuffin: U19 as a whole becomes this in the second round onward, as using a wish to save them becomes a major motivation for Goku, Vegeta, Bra, and Gast, once Bra forfeits to win the tournament.
  • Macross Missile Massacre: Tidar uses a barrage of missiles against Uub, which not only home in on him but were filled with toxic chemicals.
  • Mauve Shirt: Phipsil and Nedwook were only spectators, but by the time of the Majin Rebellion they've received more screentime and onscreen victories than some of the U19 contestants, and have featured prominently on several chapter covers. Phipsil in particular wasn't even introduced until page 1331 but has probably had the largest role of any U19 member besides Eleim.
  • Mexican Standoff: When one of their own gets Majinized by Babadi, he holds his fellow soldiers hostage. However, since he's 4 against 1, they give him one chance to back down before they all try to shoot them. It's a costly victory that ends up with 2 of their own dead, but at least that freed them up to make a stand against the other Majins.
  • Out of Focus: U19 as a whole gets very little focus. As pointed out in The Generic Guy, their personalities don't stand out from each other much, outside of fights they may do combat commentary (even then it only really happens when it's related to another Helior, and considering only three of them are participating on the tournament, and only Eleim reached the second round, it doesn't happen much), and they've gotten no specials about their universe still (Although there was a flashback during Eleim's fight against Bra, but it's only one page). As of 2023, it's only them, U2 (Toriyama's other works and Mary Sue), U5 (XXI's universe), and U15 (I'K'L's universe) that have no specials, and U2 is a joke universe, XXI is deliberately mysterious, and I'K'L got disqualified since he wasn't born yet, and his mother barely even shows up and hasn't done anything for the story yet, so the lack of specials around U19 is noticeable. This is somewhat mitigated with the novelization, where they do have their own text fanfic, but it hasn't been updated since 2018.
    The Heliotes clenched their teeth at the sight of Tidar, wearing his basic armor, and now a slave soldier of Raichi.
    • For characters in particular, Loopwhirl and Magsuns have it worse than the rest. Tidar, Xeniloum and Elleim are participants in the tournament and had their fights, and while they and the rest of U19 didn't do much for years after the fights, eventually Phipsil and Nedwook helped during the Majin rebellion, and Naurb used the be the most frequent member after Elleim by making combat commentary and is the only one to have been majinized, and he gets some character development where regrets his actions so much he requests to be court-martialed. Loopwhirl and Magsuns haven't done anything during the story. At the very least, Loopwhirl has shown in two pages a very arrogant personality, while Magsuns has talked the least among them.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: Their Ultra Armors are strong enough to defeat a Super Saiyan 2, and they can produce more of them. Against the strongest fighters in the tournament, however, even Super Saiyan 2s are lacking.
    • Tidar went up against Uub without his Ultra Armor, and was killed until the Dragon Balls wished him back.
    • Xeniloum went up against Zen Buu, who is easily a contender for being the most powerful being in the tournament.
    • Eleim went up against U16 Bra, who has so far made it to the quarter-finals and was able to defeat King Cold (who is stated to be as strong as Perfect Cell) in her base form.
  • Plot Archaeology: In the original DB manga, chapter 197, Raditz says that the reason he went to Earth to get Goku was so there could be four saiyans instead of three to conquer a potent planet. After Raditz said this, it's not mentioned anymore, with neither Nappa or Vegeta talking about it afterwards, making the potent planet's existence look like just an excuse for Raditz to have a reason to go Earth to get Goku, and explain why he didn't show up earlier. DBM's novel says the planet they had to conquer was Helior, which explains why saiyans as powerful as Nappa and Vegeta could struggle with it, and why it has a high sale value, as having technology advanced enough to keep up with powerful beings is valuable.
  • Plot Hole: Despite how lethal Carbonite is, and how desperate they are to get rid of it, no reason is ever given why only three of them are participants on the tournament. All of them are wearing armors when they show up, and after Vegetto's fight with Broly, they all changed to their Ultra Armors, even the ones who came as only viewers, and during the Majin rebellion both Nedwook and Phipsil got another Ultra Armor once the ones they were using ran out of energy, so they have armors to use to spare. It can't be because of a cap related to how many people can participate on the tournament, since more than half of the universes have more participants. It's only U4 (Buu), U5 (XXI), U7 (Gast), U11 (Babidi), U12 (Future Trunks), U14 (Androids), U17 (Cell), and U20 (Broly) that have less. If there is a cap to U19 over how many fighters are allowed to participate, perhaps the Vargas decided to do it only with them because it's one of the last universes to have been called, and they wanted one more universe to have a last fighter, but such a thing is never implied, and when talking with U18, they said they accept anybody as a fighter, so the Vargas were clearly not too worried about numbers.
  • Powered Armor: The Heliorians use them to compensate their lack of ki abilities, and they are INCREDIBLY effective.
  • Punny Name: Heliorians' names are a pun about home appliance brands or stores:
    • Eleim: Miele, a German producer mainly known for their washing machines;
    • Loopwhirl: Whirlpool, an US company mostly known for their washing machines and dishwashers;
    • Magsuns: Samsung, a South Korean home appliances manufacturer;
    • Naurb: Braun, a German company specialized in razors and the likes;
    • Nedwook: Kenwood, a British kitchen appliances producer;
    • Phipsil: Philips, a Dutch electronics conglomerate;
    • Tidar: Darty, a French retail chain specialized in consumer electronics;
    • Xeniloum: Moulinex, a French company well-known for their blenders.
  • Red Shirt Army: During the Majin Rebellion, all four of the "good" non-contestant Heloites die fighting Babidi's minions.
  • Remember the New Guy?: The U19 roster has been in flux throughout DBM's runtime, with many characters, weapon and armor designs, and even names getting changed over the years. Most of the group had been nailed down by the second round, but it was only completely finalized around the time of Gast vs. Raichi.
  • Sphere of Destruction: Their Ultra Armor can make a small sphere which, when it detonates, can destroy anything weaker than a Super Saiyan 2.
  • Team Spirit: It's implied the Heliorians generally win battles by working together, since Nedwook and Phipsil are flabbergasted during the Majin Rebellion when none of their allies know any strategies besides "fight the bad guy 1v1 until somebody wins." Phipsil in particular demonstrates she's a team player when she defends U16 Gohan from Majin Bra and comes up with a strategy to weaken Bra that involves sacrificing herself.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Given what we've said about carbonite, for some reason the Heliorians still allow the stuff to be loaded into their ultra armors.
  • Too Powerful to Live: Perhaps the reason why three out of five Heliotes were among the first casualties during the Majin rebellion, as just Phipsil and Nedwook did a lot to turn things around before Bra showed up, such as Philpsil saving the Kaioshins from Dabura, Nedwook saving Goten from Kakarotto, and later killing King Piccolo as collateral while fighting Cell. And considering that Cell only survived when fighting Nedwook because of his healing factor, it means every Majin weaker than him, (Meaning, everyone except Bra) could be dealt with much quicker by them, which could end the rebellion earlier, or at least give them a better fighting chance against Bra.

    Eleim

Eleim

The leader of the Heliorians.
  • Artificial Gravity: The Ultra Armor can increase the weight of what its wearer touches. While this is something all Ultra armors should be able to do, which's why this trope is listed "in general", only Elleim has made use of it in both of his tournament fights.
  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: Presumably. For what it's worth he's the only U19 contestant to make it to the second round, though considering who he fought (Android 16) compared to who his teammates fought (Uub and U4 Buu), this isn't necessarily saying much.
  • Badass Normal: Android 16 notes his body is trained, which's noticeable considering Heliotes are all reliant on their technology.
    Android 16: "His armor makes him as resistant as a cyborg! But his strikes and super-human speed, he owes them to his boosted and trained body!"
  • Demoted to Extra: As the leader of U19, Eleim serves as the face of their universe for roughly the first half of DBM. Once Phipsil is introduced, however, she quickly takes over his role as most prominent U19 character and it is her, not him, that talks to Bra about her decision to forfeit against Gast.
  • Informed Attribute: Supposedly the leader of the Heliotes, but considering the way Heliotes are Out of Focus, he has yet to do any real leadership besides telling Tidar and Xeniloum what direction to search after Babidi teleported most participants to another planet during the Majin rebellion. Even during both of Buu's rebellions, where he should order the others around he doesn't do much. During the first one his idea to deal with Zen Buu is to use Carbonite, which Naurb quickly yells "Don't you dare!" to him, and during the second one he's just another Heliote helping with the barrier.
  • Pragmatic Hero: Eleim's universe will get destroyed by carbonite if he fails in the tournament, so he seeks to win at any cost, even if it means trickery, threats, or killing.
  • Sadistic Choice: Attempts a rare heroic example on Bra: either forfeit, get hit by Eleim's carbonite and die, or dodge his attack and let the carbonite kill the audience. Bra manages to Take a Third Option by offering to give Eleim her wish.
  • Standardized Leader: Eleim's the leader of U19 and will do whatever it takes to save his universe. And... that's about all there is to say about him.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Bra and the other Heliotes call him out for threatening to use Carbonite on the audience during his fight against Bra.
    Naurb

Naurb

    Phipsil

Phipsil

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/u19_phipsil.png
  • Action Girl: Phipsil is the sole female member of the team. And she can kick as much butt as the rest of her team. Just ask Dabura and the gaping hole in his chest.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: In DBM colors, she replaces random members from U19 once in a while, and is there when the entire group debuts in page 29 (She's the redhead saying "hello" to Goku), page 41 makes it more obvious it's her.
  • Advertised Extra: If a reader not familiar with DBM were to look at the chapter covers before going through the webcomic, they may assume Phipsil was a new major character introduced partway through the story. They might be surprised to learn Phipsil is a Mauve Shirt at best who appeared from nowhere and got one major scene before disappearing from the plot.
  • All There in the Manual: At the moment, Phipsil’s name hasn’t actually been spoken in-story. It’s only been revealed in supplementary materials like author statements and minicomics.
  • Breakout Character: Quickly became the most prominent member of U19, even above her own leader Eleim. She's continued to appear in chapter covers despite not having a role in the story, and has regular appearances in the spin-off comic Chibi Son Bra Did Her Best.
  • Guile Hero: Knowing she's out of batteries and completely outclassed, Phipsil comes up with an Indy Ploy to take down Majin Bra, taking off her armor and challenging a fair fight. She fully expects Majin Bra not to go for it...but that's okay, since her challenge is actually a distraction to keep Majin Bra from noticing the carbonite Phipsil just shot onto her boot.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Phipsil's above-mentioned Indy Ploy relies upon Bra being too busy killing her to notice she's been shot.
  • Imperial Stormtrooper Marksmanship Academy: A heroic example. During the Majin rebellion both her and Nedwook somehow failed at hitting Babidi while using their energy lasers, which would've ended the rebellion much earlier. While Bra did save him before they could actually hit, it's still noticeable they missed their initial shots at all, and while Babidi did dodge the first laser, it was shown before they can create a wider area of attack with the lasers, which's how Nedwook tried to kill Cell, and the same laser killed King Piccolo.
  • Ironic Echo: Phipsil must've been paying attention: her challenge to Majin Bra to fight without using Super Saiyan is the exact same challenge Cold made to her earlier. Unfortunately, Bra isn't a sucker for it a second time.
  • Remember the New Guy?: While this happened a few times with U19 in general it's specially noticeable with her. She didn't debut until page 1331, and by this point U19 were on the tournaments for years. While her on-panel debut was just a cameo, the Majin Rebellion happens not long after Gast's fight with Raichi, in which she quickly becomes one of the two U19 members who actually get to keep fighting, the other being Nedwook, and she even outlives him for a bit. And while she doesn't do much after the Majin Rebellion, she's the one who talks with Bra after her fight with Gast over her promise to save U19, not Eleim.
  • Senseless Sacrifice: Phipsil's aforementioned Heroic Sacrifice and Indy Ploy ultimately ends up moot since Majin Bra still ends up winning and later snaps out of Babidi's thrall regardless of whether Phipsil chose to sacrifice herself or not.
  • Sensual Spandex: Most of the time Phipsil's fanservice potential is pretty low due to her conservative armor, but when she sheds it to fight Majin Bra, Asura is clearly enjoying drawing her in the skintight suit underneath.
  • The Smurfette Principle: The only female member of U19 to attend the tournament.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Phipsil specifically calls out Majin Bra for forgetting her promise to save Universe 19.
