Characters / Dragon Ball Multiverse Universe 9

Go To

Consisting of entirely humans, U9 is the result of the Earth surviving and defeating major threats and forces shown in the series without Saiyans or Namekians to help them. As a result, U9's inhabitants would train and use other factors, like Dr. Gero's tech, to develop into old age ahead of their main counterparts. The fighters in this universe include Krillin (who has taken Master Roshi's place as the Turtle Hermit)note , Tien note , Yamcha note  and Videl note . Spectators include Bulma and "a different" Trunks, implied (and in the novelization outright stated) to be the son she had with Yamcha. note

In General

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dbm_u9.png
  • Badass Normal: To some extent, given the fact that almost all the other contenders are either powerful aliens, half-aliens or robots. Krillin, Tien and Videl are some of the only 100% human characters. Krillin is strong enough to curb-stomp Sauza, and came close to beating Tapion. And Videl (thanks to the Kaioken) survived a fight with King Cold in his Third Form, even managing to land a few hits on him. Tien was able to vaporize Zen Buu - but even that wasn't enough to kill Buu completely, and he gives up afterwards.
  • Fantastic Racism: Justified. The U9 humans have not had positive experiences with aliens, resulting in this. U9 Krillin even coldly dismissed U18 Goku, who was trying to compliment him. Subverted later on in the novelization, however, where they begin to meet Universe 18 on friendly terms.
  • Out of Focus: Gets hit hard with this trope once all their contestants get eliminated from the tournament. By the third round, they spent the remainder of their time in their apartments, and don't even play a major role in the Majin rebellion beyond their battle with U8's goons and a Cell Junior because they had to protect Elder Kai.
  • Team Spirit: Like Universe 19, Universe 9 seems to have utilized this as much as possible to take down their threats. This is best shown when they face off against the weakest Majin Cell Junior, an opponent stronger than all of them, which gets overwhelmed by all of them working together to fight and kill it.

    Krillin

Krillin

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/u9_krillin.png
  • Alternate Universe Reed Richards Is Awesome: He's the new Turtle Hermit, has a Turtle Shell made of Katchin and has access to the Kaioken.
  • Curb Stomp Cushion: Krillin manages to defeat Tapion on his own handily, and only loses because of the latter bringing out Hirudegarn (who was capable of going up against a Super Saiyan 3 at least evenly).
  • Fantastic Racism: He despises all Saiyans and many of the Saiyans in the tournament doesn't alleviate his prejudice. This Krillin never had a Goku not even as an enemy like U13. Therefore, any Saiyans he has met have all been evil.
  • Old Master: He has taken Roshi's place as the new Turtle Hermit.
    Tien

Tien

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/u9_tien.png
  • Curb Stomp Cushion: Tien's battle with Zen Buu - at first, Tien tried to use the Evil Containment Wave on him to keep him imprisoned in a inflatable duck inner tube - as it turns out, Buu knew the counter AND had already spread parts of himself around the ring. Afterwards, Tien uses his Tri-Beam and incinerates Buu's body - but couldn't do enough damage to kill Buu for good, and decides to throw in the towel.
  • Multi-Armed and Dangerous: Utilizes the Four Witches Technique in tandem with his Neo-Tri Beam to vaporize Zen Buu.
  • Mythology Gag: In his fight with Sun Wukong, Tien is likened to the Buddha, who was the original inspiration of the character.
  • Know When to Fold Them: Tien throws in the towel when it's clear he simply can't inflict any damage Zen Buu can't regenerate from easily.
    Yamcha

Yamcha

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/u9_yamcha.png
  • Action Dad: Is still a Z-Fighter and managed to have a son with Bulma.
  • A Day in the Limelight: He plays a crucial role in Chapter 98, where he jumps in to stop I'K'L from killing everyone at the tournament.
  • Alternate Universe Reed Richards Is Awesome: U9 Yamcha is an android strong enough to dominate the fight with U14 Android 18. He's also Happily Married to Bulma. He also gets to save the day against I'K'L, whose Story-Breaker Power would otherwise let him massacre everyone at the tournament.
  • Artificial Human: Yamcha is an Android in this universe.
  • Badass Boast: In one of Bardock's visions, Yamcha tells an unknown individual they "beat everyone else, but can't touch me," saying this makes him the strongest of all the universes. When the vision comes to pass much, much later, it turns out Yamcha is talking to the newly-born I'K'L.
  • Composite Character: Yamcha was made into Android 17 and takes Vegeta's place as the husband of Bulma and father of Trunks in this universe.
  • Curbstomp Battle: Beats Android 18 with no effort. I'K'L similarly can't touch him, even after Yamcha's wounded by an angry cheap shot by Androids 17 and 18.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: It's implied that becoming Android 17 was not a good experience for him, which is why he is trying to redeem the U14 Androids.
  • Happily Married: To Bulma.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Yamcha is trying to get U14 Android 18 and Android 17 to have one, as he can relate to being an android. It's the reason he forfeits despite being stronger than #18.
  • No-Sell: Since he's an android, he's immune to I'K'L's time stop ability. Somehow.
  • Normal Fish in a Tiny Pond: He easily overpowers Android 18 in their match, something far beyond his U18 counterpart (who would likely be hopelessly outmatched by even Frieza.) This isn't too impressive in a setting where even Super Saiyan 2-level opponents are relative weaklings. ...But it is enough to give him an advantage over I'K'L, who can beat Android 16 with no difficulty.
  • Older Than They Look: He still looks as young as he did in the Saiyan Saga despite now being as old as Krillin. Being an Android definitely helps.
  • This Looks Like a Job for Aquaman: He's comparative small fry compared to the real heavy-hitters of the tournament like Vegito, but his android nature allows him to No-Sell I'K'L's time stop ability, letting him save the life of a ton of beings far stronger than he is.
    Videl

Videl

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/u9_videl.png
  • Action Girl: Moreso than her other incarnations, being able to fight on par with the veteran Z-Fighters of her Universe.
  • Alternate Universe Reed Richards Is Awesome: U9 Videl is an Amazonian Beauty who managed to draw the Z sword and master the Kaioken. She's able to face King Cold in his Third Form and not be obliterated in a second. U18 Gohan is even Distracted by the Sexy when he first sees her, before being interrupted by the Videl of his universe.
  • Composite Character: Videl drew the Z Sword in place of Gohan.
  • The Chosen One: Videl was able to draw the Z Sword for this reason.
  • Curb Stomp Cushion: While it's clear from the start that Videl can't defeat King Cold, she still puts up a decent fight thanks to the Kaioken, even managing to land a few blows on his Third Form. Before being forced to forfeit when the power gap becomes too enormous, since Cold transforms into his Final Form.
  • Heroic RRoD: Going into overdrive with the Kaioken to kill the weakest Majin Cell Junior causes her to suffer this, leaving her out of commision for the rest of the Majin Rebellion.
  • The Smurfette Principle: The only girl Z-Fighter.
  • Know When to Fold Them: Videl gives up when Cold transforms into his Final Form, realizing how outmatched she is.
    Old Kai

Old Kai

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/u9_old_kai.png
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: He acts just like his canon counterpart, but has all the same abilities and shows himself to be cunning with the implied mental block he snuck into U13 Raditz during his ritual, probably to prevent him from doing anything too evil once he gains the Mystic form.
  • Dirty Old Man: Just as much as his canon self. It's shown that Videl ultimately turned down the Mystic ritual once she learned what his "condition" would be.
  • Time to Unlock More True Potential: The Mystic ritual. He offers it to U9 Videl, who agrees in the moment, but ultimately passes after hearing his "condition", and starts doing it for U13 Raditz.
