Characters / Dragon Ball Multiverse Universe 8

Go To

Cold Empire

U8 is the universe where Freeza's family and their armies became the supreme rulers of the universe after triumphing on Namek. The point of divergence is when Krillin beheads Vegeta after the latter's fight with Goku on Earth, meaning he is not on Namek to help them. By the time of the Multiverse Tournament, the denizens of U8 have aged, but thanks to their technology their youth is maintained. The fighters in this universe include King Coldnote , Frieza note , Cooler note , and their followers, which include the Ginyu Force note  and Salza note .

In General

  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Everyone ends up Majinized by Babidi.
  • Butt-Monkey:
    • The Frost Demons and the Ginyu Force are routinely mocked throughout the tournament, such as all three of the Ginyu Force fighters losing in their first matches, Nappa forfeiting to Freeza just to piss him off and even Burter getting his head blown off by Freeza in anger after aforementioned forfeit. Additionally, the Frost Demons (mostly Freeza) receive reaction shots almost every time someone turns Super Saiyan, with Freeza and Cooler even downright lampshading how much they're outclassed. Cold seems to be the only one unaffected out of all of U8.
    • Even when Freeza uses a mental battle to gain a "home field" advantage, Goku still takes him down quickly, and in the actual fight, takes him down with one punch.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Frieza's family does seem to care for each other. When King Cold or rather U16 Bra in Cold's body lays crippled from his battle with Bra, Frieza and Cooler rush to his side to make sure he receives the needed medical treatment. The family also doesn't seriously chastise each other for losses suffered in the tournament. That being said, Cooler's ambition of being The Starscream suggests that battle power and the respect it entices play a major role in the family.
  • Hidden Agenda Villain: Their goal isn't to win the tournament, they just want the Dragon Balls. They're willing to do anything to get them, of course. However, we don't know why.
  • Hidden Depths: With a dose of Wicked Cultured. Freeza and Cooler enjoy good music and are revealed to know a lot (and argue) about the different space music styles.
  • Last of His Kind:
    • The Cold family are the last of the Frost Demons. Universe 8 is the only one of the 20 universes where they remain.
    • In addition, Nail becomes the sole surviving Namekian, while Goku is the last living Saiyan (aside from Broly and Paragus). Subverted for both of them as Goku and Nail are killed during their attack on Freeza's empire, thus making both the Saiyans and Namekians completely extinct.
  • Older Than They Look: All of them have utilized technology in order to live longer, making them all look like how they did in canon.
  • Plot-Irrelevant Villain: Perhaps the most irrelevant villains in DBM. While Freeza and Cooler are among the strongest in their own universe, they're too weak in the tournament and anyone who can turn super saiyan or is around that level trivializes them, and they're not smart enough to manipulate things in their favor and just fruitlessly search for the dragon balls. Cold is the closest thing to an exception, since he gives Bra a rather tough fight, forcing her to reveal some of her skills, and during the Majin rebellion he's clearly one of the strongest of Babidi's minions, but that's about all there is to him. Even the reveal that Cold is actually Ginyu didn't make much of a difference. While he did take control of Bra's body, after his fight with her, he's put back in his own body 14 pages later and nothing else came from that.
  • Pyrrhic Victory:
    • Freeza's victory over the Z-Fighters on Namek in this universe is ultimately this, as he never gets his wish due to blowing up the planet when the heroes summon the dragon (not that he ever could, due to the language barrier). However, it's also revealed that this continues on in the aftermath, Goku and Nail invade his capital city and the resulting fight leads the entire place to be destroyed, putting a huge cost on whatever triumph the Frost Demons managed to gain over them.
    • This also happens in the actual tournament, during his fight with Nappa. While he technically wins, he doesn't get the satisfaction of actually beating Nappa, causing him great anguish.
    • King Cold turns U16 Bra's victory into this. While she technically won, Cold (actually Ginyu in Cold's body) performed his body-swap technique, taking her healthy, more powerful body that is still in the tournament and leaving her trapped in his weaker, near-dead body. Luckily for Bra, it doesn't last long..
  • Villain Forgot to Level Grind: Freeza's group hasn't really trained, resulting in them (sans Cold) being the Butt-Monkey of the tournament.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: The entire scenario for the Frost Demons' victory all stems from Krillin killing Vegeta back on Earth.

    King Cold

King Cold

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/u8_cold.png
  • Adaptational Badass: Oh yes. In the main canon, Cold was only as strong/slightly weaker than Freeza, and killed by Future Trunks effortlessly. In Universe 8, King Cold in his true form is on Android-tier at least, and at 100% dominates Super Saiyan Bardock. He then proceeds to show off a 5th and 6th form, the latter being close to Perfect Cell in power. Later, he is given the Majin boost too. Frieza implies it's because Ginyu was an expert fighter, unlike the Unskilled, but Strong Cold family, and thus put more effort into gaining power.
  • Ascended Extra: In the canon timeline, King Cold was quickly killed by Future Trunks. Here, he's shown to be far stronger and gets plently of focus as the ruler of Universe 8. Subverted when it turns out Cold has even less of a role, he's been dead since before the beginning of the series and Ginyu has taken his place.
  • Bishōnen Line: King Cold is revealed to have a similar progression of forms to his son, with his canonical appearance being equivalent to the second. His true form is very similar to Freeza's, but taller and with blue highlights instead of purple.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Videl couldn't keep up with Cold even when he was only using his first restricted form. Once he went back to his true form, she quickly gave up. His fight with Bardock was a little more even, but once he went 100%, Cold mopped the floor with him.
  • Dead All Along: Chapter 55 reveals "King Cold" is actually Captain Ginyu inhabiting his body. The real Cold was slain immediately after the switch. Freeza even says that his father is most certainly long gone.
  • The Emperor: He rules his empire absolutely and even his sons don't dare disobey him.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Just as (if not more) ruthless as his sons, but keeps a noble, regal demeanor.
  • Large and in Charge: Cold is one of the tallest competitors in the tournament and is rivaled only by Gast. His sons look downright puny next to him, especially Freeza. In addition, unlike in the canon universe, there is no doubt that he is the undisputed ruler of his universe. His 6th form is gigantic.
  • Loophole Abuse: The rules of the tournament state that the fight can only begin once both fighters touch the ring. Cold uses this to his advantage against U16 Bra by floating just above the ring, allowing him the opportunity to transform into his fifth and then sixth form.
  • Multi-Armed and Dangerous: His 6th form has four arms.
  • Neck Snap: How he dies after getting body swapped with Ginyu.
  • New Powers as the Plot Demands: King Cold having two augmentation forms with no foreshadowing before transforming against Bra. On top of that, this contradicts a prior comic that stated that Cooler was the only Frost Demon with an augmented form.
  • One-Winged Angel: Like Frieza and Cooler, he can transform up to a 4th form. Like Cooler, he can transform up to a 5th form. Unlike either of them, he has a 6th form!
  • Villain Forgot to Level Grind: The most notable aversion outside of Cell, while before he was only on par with Frieza his extra training allowed him to become nearly as strong as Perfect Cell during the Cell Games.
    Freeza

Freeza

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/u8_frieza.png
  • Adaptational Jerkass: While Canon Freeza didn't care much for the life of his subjects, he was at least polite and well-mannered to those he talked to. U8 Freeza makes no attempt to hide his true feelings, being actively rude to his underlings, and he will often kill them for no reason other than to vent his frustration. Justified since Freeza in canon only acts polite and civil if he could throw his weight around. With him being outclassed by almost everyone else bar his minions, he has no reason to right now.
  • Bad Boss: It wouldn't be Freeza if he wasn't brutalizing his subordinates. Or killing them to vent his frustration.
  • Broken Pedestal: To Ginyu, who realizes Freeza never gives a damn about the sacrifices his men made for him.
  • Enemy Mine: Freeza invokes this trope when he learns that Vegito also knows Ginyu switched bodies with Cold, then Bra. Vegito isn't having any of it and just knocks Freeza away.
  • Evil Has a Bad Sense of Humor: Freeza's final words to Ginyu come off as more humorous than threatening.
Freeza: Time to find a new name for your squad! You're done dancing!
  • Mental World: Thanks to Zen Buu, Freeza was granted the ability to create a world within his mind to serve as the battleground for his fight with Goku. Needless to say, it heavily favors him, being incredibly cold, low on air and causing those inside to age rapidly. He still loses, but at least it was a more challenging fight than expected.
  • Never My Fault: He blames the Ginyu Force for the destruction of his capital city... when he is the one responsible for it.
  • No-Nonsense Nemesis: What sets this incarnation apart from canon Freeza and the reason why he won, is that he does not invoke Just Toying with Them in the slightest. On Namek when the Heroes steal the Dragon Balls and summon Porunga he proceeds to nuke the planet killing everyone rather than letting them have another wish. Later when Goku confronts him the moment Freeza's transformations give him enough power to overpower Goku he does exactly that (in contrast to canon Freeza who upon reaching his Final Form, had the power to kill Goku easily but kept playing sadistic games with him).
  • No-Sell: As horribly outmatched as he is, it should be noted that he was unaffected by the gravity of the ring (it was over 200 times Earth's gravity) and amusingly enough Goku is the one who couldn't take it at first!
  • Properly Paranoid: After being warned by Zen Buu that Ginyu was in the bodies of one of his men, he spends a good part of the series fearing that Ginyu was any character that he was talking to and expecting revenge.
  • Taught by Experience: Unlike his canon counterpart, this Freeza is capable of learning from his mistakes. After nearly getting beaten by the Goku of his universe, he starts training until he can stay in his true form for as long as he likes.
  • Villain Forgot to Level Grind: Unlike many other villains like Cell and Buu, Freeza has had very little power-up since he encountered the heroes in his universe. The only major difference is that he can stay in his final form all the time, but he otherwise isn't any stronger. The Majin power-up finally nets him a 5th form.
    Cooler

Cooler

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/u8_cooler.png
  • Adaptational Badass: Compared to the movie Cooler. Cooler was outclassed by Super Saiyan Goku, and could only put up a fight with his Supernova. The comic's adaptation has him hold his own against Super Saiyan Goku in a proper fight, even gaining the upper hand at various points in the battle.
  • Cain and Abel: His reaction to Nappa mocking Frieza? He hides a smug, cruel smirk.
  • Genre Mashup: Cooler claims that his favorite music is Classical Figrindan Symphony, which is completely different from the Punk Figrindan Symphony being played by the Cantina band. Goku and King Cold can't tell the difference.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Practically an alcoholic after Trunks owns him.
  • Irony: In canon he was the only member of the Frost Demons who actually trained, but in DBM he's the only one who has made no improvements since then.
  • Oh, Crap!: Has a mild version when he sees Cold release his true form. Not to mention his further forms.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: He was the most powerful member of his family before Ginyu hijacked Cold's body and subsequently trained in it, but he never gets to show it. While his father and brother get matched up against U13 Nappa and U9 Videl respectively, both of whom are foes Cooler could've squashed like bugs, Cooler has to face Future Trunks in the first round. After Trunks had powered up enough to easily defeat Semi-Perfect Cell. Cooler goes down in one hit.
    • His special chapter is kinder to him: there he fights Super Saiyan Goku (after defeating Freeza and training on Yardrat, and halfway through his 3 years of Android training) nearly to a standstill. This being the same universe(s) where his father and brother were wasted in a single blow each by the much weaker Super Saiyan Trunks a year and a half before.
  • The Starscream: The main reason why he trains: He plans on killing Cold and taking his place.
    Ginyu

Captain Ginyu

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/u8_ginyu.jpg
  • Adaptational Heroism: This Ginyu is a A Hero to His Hometown, and has never shown any indications of performing particularly heinous acts. Furthermore, canon Ginyu had a disregard for his teammates' lives once they died, while this Ginyu willingly took the blame for the team's failure and was executed by Freeza as a result.
  • A Hero to His Hometown: Ginyu seems to be well liked by the people of Freeza's capital. He's seen taking a picture with a child, and said child actually seems happy to be with him!
  • Becoming the Mask: After spending so much time pretending to be King Cold as a part of his revenge scheme he ended up forgetting about revenge entirely and focused on running his new empire.
  • Body Surf: Freeza performed a You Have Failed Me on him long ago, but he managed to escape into someone else. It turns out that a chain of body surfs led to him taking King Cold's body. After losing to Bra, he does it again into her body.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Early on, Zen Buu hints to Freeza that Ginyu is among his men. Years later, this finally pays off.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Let's just say that stealing Bra's body was a good idea that was executed horribly. Instead of immediately changing with her during the countdown and explaining to the Vargas what happened, he decides to wait until the moment he officially loses and tries to take her place in U16, despite the fact that Bra would still be alive to tell people about the change when she gets properly healed, Frieza would recognize his former right hand man's technique so he might just snitch to the Vargas, or that if he gets found out he'll have to deal with Vegetto. Frankly it's a small miracle that he's still alive at this point. Though Ginyu was expecting Bra-in-Cold's body to die from the wounds sustained during that fight and although he tried to switch with Vegito's body, he fails due to the former's instant transmission and is returned to his original body.
  • A Father to His Men: Ginyu chose to take all the blame for Freeza's capital being destroyed to spare his men Freeza's wrath. In his honor, the Ginyu Force still keep his name despite the fact he's no longer on the team.
  • Grin of Audacity: He sports one when Vegetto and Gohan say that they know he's not actually Bra due to knowing that there's not a damn thing they can do to make him switch back.
  • Hidden Agenda Villain: Whatever he's planning, he's playing it close to his chest.
  • Kill and Replace: Performed a chain of body-swaps to eventually take King Cold's place, then spent the time since then pretending to be him with no one the wiser. Freeza correctly assumes that whatever body Cold was swapped into is dead.
  • Mood Killer: Invoked. When Ginyu first meets Goku and Nail, he makes a big deal about how all his comrades are dead. Recoome, however is quick to tell him they're all fine. Ginyu's response?
    Ginyu: You killed the moment...
  • Oh, Crap!: When Gohan and Vegito confront him after body-swapping into Bra, he panics. He clearly didn't expect them to figure it out so soon.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: He killed the original King Cold after stealing his body; King Cold being a mass-murdering tyrant who killed entire planets worth of people for money.
  • The Reveal: King Cold yelling out "CHANGE!!" at the end of a fight reveals that he actually was Ginyu in disguise all along.
  • Smug Super: It helps that he bodyjacks incredibly powerful bodies and has a relatively obscure and powerful trump card, but even when he's facing down Vegito he never loses his confidence.
  • Taking the Heat: Took all the blame for failing to defend Freeza's capital from the unnamed Saiyan to protect his men from Freeza's rage.
  • Walking Spoiler: Anything past "he is among Freeza's men" is a huge spoiler.
  • Wham Line: At the end of his fight with Bra, he yells "CHANGE!!" revealing who he is.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: While him going SSJ2 doesn't affect him nearly as badly as it did Bra it still leaves him noticeably more unhinged.
  • You Have Failed Me: Supposedly killed by Freeza for failing to defend his capital. Zen Buu reveals that he survived and joined the tournament as one of Freeza's men. It turns out Ginyu has been hiding in the body of Freeza's father, King Cold.
