Voiced by: Nobuhiko Okamoto (Japanese, teenager), Akeno Watanabe (Japanese, child), Bryce Papenbrook (English, teenager) and Wendee Lee (English, child). Foreign VAs

The protagonist and titular character. Rin and his twin brother Yukio were raised by Father Fujimoto Shiro. Something of a delinquent but with a good heart, he turns out to be the son of Satan. After discovering this and the death of his adoptive father, Rin has made it his goal to be a powerful exorcist, one strong enough to beat Satan. Is nice enough to be considered a cosmic joke on behalf of his blood father.

    A — F
  • Accidental Misnaming: He just can't get Amaimon's name right.
  • The Ace: Konekomaru directly tells him that he is this for the Exwires.
  • Achilles' Heel: His tail and his demon heart, as Mephisto explains. A demon's heart is both a source of strength and vulnerability, since it's destruction means death, but only when it is exposed can a demon draw out their greatest power. Since Kurikara contains his subdued demon heart, he is able to fight with the sword simultaneously restraining and protecting his heart. When Kurikara broke, the demon heart returned to Rin in full, initially overwhelming him with power and killing him (he got better). Note: Regardless of it being a weak point, Rin's demon heart is still damned hard to destroy,as it took a black flame bullet point-blank and the previous paladin's strongest attack on full and in both instances didn't take a scratch.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: In the manga his hair is pure black, the anime translated that color to dark blue.
  • Adaptational Wimp: Downplayed, but the anime shows Rin being injured and needing medical attention way more than in the manga. A good example is that in the anime, blocking Kuro's charge with his head gave him a nosebleed. Not so in the manga.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Rin grew up with zero friends because his inhuman strength would scare them off. He also was constantly harassed by bullies and called a demon.
  • Almighty Janitor: Rin has endurance and firepower beyond any of his classmates and most exorcists.
    • Shown in the anime when Amaimon easily curbstomped his classmates and high-ranking exorcists in the Vatican, Rin almost immediately defeats him if their battle wasn't interrupted. Amaimon. One of the Eight Demon Kings that no exorcist can defeat on their own.
    • Reduced but still present in the manga. Rin can't take on the Demon Kings at full power, but he's still stronger than most demons, is extremely durable, and can regenerate from injuries that would be fatal to a human. He's a huge contributor to the exwires continued survival when they end up in situations beyond their official rank, such as fighting the Impure King or the Illuminati.
  • Amazon Chaser: Judging from some of Rin's reactions to Shiemi's feats, he finds how strong she is quite attractive.
  • Ancestral Name: His mother named him after Satan, his biological father, who was originally called Rinka before growing an ego.
  • Animal Motifs: Acts a lot like a great big black cat. Kato has drawn him as a tiger person at least once.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: Inverted since he's the older brother, but he's definitely this for Yukio. It's played for drama since this makes Yukio look down on Rin as much as up and makes it hard for Rin to be taken seriously by Yukio and others.
  • Anti-Anti-Christ: He's the son of Satan but he's a Nice Guy who wants to kick his birth father's ass.
  • Anti-Hero: The Disney variety due to his low social skills. He's slowly growing out of it.
  • Badass Adorable: Considering his status of a cute dork and often clueless and honest actions that contradict his "Son of Satan" status he also falls under this. Then there's the way he likes to feed people...
  • Bad Liar: Incapable of telling a convincing lie, perhaps best demonstrated in the very first chapter when he tries, and fails, to lie about getting into another fight.
  • Berserker Tears: When Yukio defects to the Illuminati, and then shoots Rin repeatedly with real bullets, after a moment of total disbelief realizing that Yukio actually shot him, Rin flies into a demonic rage and attacks Yukio while crying.
  • Berserk Mode: After losing his mind in his fight against Amaimon at Mephyland, he'd black out and mindlessly attack if he had the sword drawn or was provoked. Shura tells him this is because he is afraid of the flames, which allows them to overpower him. Rin faces his fear when the flames start to "burn him out" as he tries to destroy the Impure King, but remembers that his friends trust him and accepts that he is the son of Satan. He does not lose control again until Yukio betrays and guns him down, leading Rin to fly into a blind rage and attempt to cut down Yukio with Kurikara. Ever since Rin's demon heart returned, his Berserk Mode has been replaced by the embodiment of his suppressed rage and lusts.
  • Betty and Veronica:
    • The rebellious and troublesome "Veronica" to Yukio's more reliable and gentlemanly "Betty" for Shiemi's "Archie". The roles kind of get switched later on: Rin matures and becomes more of a Nice Guy, while Yukio shows more of his repressed dark side.
    • Not to mention the "Archie" between Tsundere Izumo's "Veronica" and Girl Next Door Shiemi's "Betty", though this has been pretty much resolved by Rin's confession and Izumo's resolve to help Shiemi understand her own feelings.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: A genuinely nice guy who tries so hard to have friends and honestly does care for others. Just don't piss off the guy with Hellfire, Super-Strength, and a tendency to forget himself when angry enough.
  • Big Brother Instinct: As a child, he was very protective of Yukio and would chase off people that would bully him. As they got older, Rin stopped looking after Yukio as much since he can now take care of himself and also wanted to look after himself, but Rin is still very protective of his younger brother.
"I would never hurt my younger brother!"
    • This is looking like a big factor in Rin's future growth. He understands his own avoidance of the truth hurt Yukio and he's willing to face his fears now if that's what it takes to make amends.
    • He was like this right from birth. He instinctively flash fries an Exorcist who is manhandling the newborn Yukio and it's implied that he imparted some of his flame to Yukio to save him from being stillborn.
  • The Big Guy: Since he is the strongest of the group with little else to offer Konekomaru recommends that he acts as a backup version of this.
  • Blue Is Heroic: The Hero has blue flames, blue hair, and eyes.
    • Played with in regards of his flames, since blue fire is always associated with the presence of Satan. However, Rin himself is ultimately a heroic guy and an Anti Anti Christ who has the ambition to destroy Satan.
  • Book Dumb: Very much so, especially when compared to Yukio, since while Yukio is a Teen Genius Rin is a former junior high school drop out. Downplayed compared to other shounen heroes to a more realistic level. He's not good with bookwork, but he's been improving as a later chapter shows that he went from getting 2% on a test (failing) to getting 68% (passing) in the same course.
  • Brutal Honesty: At times, since he hasn't had much experience interacting with others due to negative past experiences.
  • Bully Hunter: Heavily implied as the audience first sees him beating up a bunch of guys for killing/torturing pigeons, he always used to protect Yukio and even have a few flashbacks that show he mostly got into fights this way. Arguably influenced his decision to become an Exorcist; hostile demons can count as really big bullies since they target humans.
  • Cain and Abel: Early on the possibility is raised more than once that Yukio, as a high ranking Exorcist, might be the one called on to put Rin down if Satan's powers overwhelm him, much to Rin's repeated protests. Ultimately Yukio ultimately pulls a Face–Heel Turn under manipulations from the Illuminati and tries to kill Rin.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: He wants to kill daddy Satan.
  • Can't Hold His Liquor: As shown when Shura accidentally mixes up their drinks. A single can was enough to knock him out.
  • Character Development: In so many ways.
    • He started out much angrier and discontented than he is now. Although still insecure, he seems to be happier and a bit more easygoing. Though it is possible at least some of this is faked.
    • Rin was initially just as disgusted by his relation to Satan as everyone else and he tried his hardest to not be associated with his demonic heritage. But, he comes to understand that he must accept the fact that Satan is his father if he wants to truly becomes stronger. This is realistically shown to be easier said than done, when his own demon side had to remind him of his previous words.
    • After spending the entire series up to that point avoiding learning about his past and fearful of what he might find, Yukio's defection finally pushed him into facing everything for real.
    • He's displayed far more self control during the trip to the past than at any time previously, following Mephisto's instructions to not even try to change things despite how horrific he finds everything.
  • Child of Two Worlds: Rin's half-breed status (particularly his father's blood) drives a good chunk of the plot and Rin often wonders where he fits. Ucchusama even lampshades this by wondering if Rin is a human or a demon.
  • Childish Older Sibling: Rin is a childish, Book Dumb hot-head and is somewhat of a delinquent. In contrast, his younger twin brother Yukio is a polite, gifted scholar, and serves as one of Rin's teachers at True Cross Academy. This is later subverted in the manga, where, while both of them have issues with feeling inferior to the other, Rin eventually overcomes his, while Yukio's sanity degrades, and eventually results in him comitting a Face–Heel Turn.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: At times has strange behavior thanks to his No Social Skills. Some of it is also a result of avoidance behavior.
  • Color Motif: Blue, in different shades.
  • Cool Sword: His sword acts as both his Demon Heart and was a prized possession of Suguro's temple beforehand. It is also a Flaming Sword as a side effect of containing Rin's blue flames.
  • Cover-Blowing Superpower: In the beginning, few knew his heritage. He blows it in chapter 13 by using his blue flames.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Rin might not be the greatest at book work and often fumbles his words, but he's still the Son of Satan. His cheery attitude often hides someone who's very introspective and observant as well.
  • Curtains Match the Windows: Thanks to Adaptation Dye-Job, Rin has blue hair with his blue eyes. The full release of his heart made his hair and eyes both the color of his flames in the manga.
  • Cute Little Fangs: As a half-demon he comes with a set of sharper than usual eyeteeth. Considering his character, they mostly just serve to enhance his rather adorable looks and dorky personality. See below for when they don't.
  • Cute Monster Boy: Yes, he's the demonic bastard half-breed spawn of Satan who has the dreaded Blue Flames and can bench press cars. He's also incredibly cute and friendly.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Despite being a son of Satan, he is a nice guy.
  • Dead Guy Junior: Shiro gave Rin and Yukio the surname Okumura in honor of the retired exorcist who found Yuri in a junkyard and raised her until he was killed by Satan.
  • Death Glare: Has one strong enough to make lesser demons back off. If he's doing this and his eyes have suddenly changed to be blue with red pupils, that's your cue to get out of there before he decides to break out his Blue Flames.
  • Does Not Know His Own Strength:
    • Played Straight in the first episode of the anime, where Rin causes a series of disasters in an attempt to get his job. Completely forgotten in subsequent episodes, and no wonder...
    • Averted in the manga: Rin knows his strength well enough to function fully as a normal person (who just happens to have super strength) and never loses control of it even when angry. Word of God even says he has "clever hands", suggesting he's very deft and careful with his hands despite his strength.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?:
    • In the Anime, rescues a young girl from a tower of falling cans while on the job in the first episode... only to reveal he got fired for it. At least the girl's father thanked him for saving her.
    • In the manga, Rin saves all of the exwires' lives with his blue flames...only to be rejected for being the Son of Satan. Luckily the issues work out but OUCH.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: Whenever Kato colours him, particularly early on, he looks freakishly pale. Considering his half-demon nature, go figure.
  • Elemental Personalities: Being Satan's son, Rin has the power to generate blue flames. He's very energetic, brash and hot-tempered, but he also struggles to fight off his demon heritage's destructive impulses.
  • Enemy Within: His repressed anger and power manifests as this when his demon heart is returned and tries a Split-Personality Takeover in Chapter 98.
  • Enfant Terrible: Chapter 109 reveals him to be this when, mere moments after being born, he starts burning all nearby exorcists alive.
  • Establishing Character Moment: The audience is introduced to him punching out a punk in one blow, being called a demon as the entire group of delinquents flees, saying how they are more monstrous than him (with dead pigeons around him to prove it), looking at his bruised knuckles and realizing he's going to get scolded, then watching a pigeon fly off and wondering what he's doing. Setting up a good natured, strong guy with problems and a good awareness of himself. We then go on to see him interacting with others, showing a bit of a temper problem and how lost he is as to what he wants to do in life. And then he's the Son of Satan who just had his father figure get hit with a Death by Origin Story.
    • The supermarket scene also does a good job to establish Rin even further. He's showing impressive feats of strength such as lifting heavy stack of boxes and pushing dozens of trolleys, only to fumble the tasks due to lack of coordination, establishing Rin as Unskilled, but Strong. Then, after many failures, he's shown cooking for the customers, earning praise even from the manager, showing Rin's Hidden Depths as Supreme Chef.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: In Chapter 98, his hair turns white after having his Demon Heart released.
  • Family Eye Resemblance:
    • According to Shura, Rin inherited his mother's eyes.
    • Once his full power was released, he began to display the same flaming irises as Satan when using his powers.
  • Family of Choice: After learning he's Satan's son, Rin makes clear he doesn't give a damn about Satan being his biological father; his one and true father is and will always be Shiro Fujimoto.
    • Played with in the manga, as Shiro is genetically identical to the body Satan was possessing when he fathered the twins, and is technically their uncle if one considers clones the same as siblings.
  • Fangs Are Evil: When Rin is pissed, has drawn Kurikara and has gone out of control, his fangs become more pronounced and look much more deadly. Later in the series his sharp teeth are given more emphasis when he's angry even when the sword isn't drawn.
    • His teeth getting larger and sharper has also become a sign of demon!Rin being close to the surface.
  • Faux Flame: Rin learns how to control what his flames will and will not burn.
  • The Fettered: Perhaps due to guilt about his dad's death or perhaps just due to his general personality, he refuses to kill or seriously injure humans. Shima cites this to Lucifer as Rin's biggest weakness and even tells Rin himself that he will have to be willing to do so in the future. This even extends to demons that used to be human but aren't anymore, specifically the zombies in the Illuminati arc, much to Yukio's intense frustration.
    • Later on, Rin's own inner darkness tells him that his desire to not hate anyone is holding him back from true power.
  • Fighting from the Inside: In Chapter 98, Rin fights off his berserk demon self that tries to take over his body.
    • Happens again when the horror and self hate he felt when witnessing his own birth gave his demon half a chance to take another shot at a takeover.
  • Foil: To Yukio. He has the friendly personality that everyone loves, but he's also Book Dumb and sometimes can act rather foolishly, contrasting Yukio's more aloof and intelligent personality.
    • He's increasingly looking like this to Satan too, both being incredibly powerful demons who's existence is a direct result of the Order’s secrets, but having vastly different upbringings and personalities.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: The foolish to Yukio's responsible due to his Book Dumb and impulsive actions. At the same time, Rin is the one who's more mentally stable while Yukio falls under The Corruptible.
  • Friend to All Children: If The Movie has any say, Rin is very good with kids. An omake has him suggesting having enough kids for a soccer team.
  • Friendless Background: Much like Shiemi below, he didn't have real friends before coming to the cram school. In his case, it was an All of the Other Reindeer situation that his awkwardness and Super-Strength didn't help with.

    G — R
  • Gender-Blender Name: Rin is a name often given to girls in Japan, but a boy having it wouldn't be that weird.
  • Godzilla Threshold:
    • Crosses this in the first freaking chapter since he was told to not draw Kurikara...but chooses to anyways to try to save his foster father and get out of the Gehenna Gate. It only saves him from the Gehenna Gate.
    • Crosses it again in ch13 when he chooses to draw Kurikara to save his friends despite how that would probably get him killed by the Order. He narrrowly escapes that fate and succeeds at saving them...only for them all to reject him for his heritage for various reasons. The poor kid.
  • Goo-Goo-Godlike: Chapter 109 reveals he was in control of his Blue Flames and capable of incredible physical feats just after his birth. As a newly born infant, he was capable of killing grown exorcists and inflicted so much damage on the army of exorcists gathered to exorcise him that the Paladin of the time outright called a retreat.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Rin has a tendency to lose his temper more often than most but is often Played for Laughs as he's seen screaming at the slightest provocations. However it only becomes truly serious, when he was badly angered after the first two chapters.
    • He can be surprisingly even tempered at times as in an early example that drives this hope is when during one of their many arguments, Ryuji dares Rin to walk up to a nearby demon that is chained up for class and touch it without making it attack him to prove that he's serious about being an exorcist. Rin tells him no way, that he has no reason to risk his life for a petty argument.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Human and demon hybrid, the fact the demon in question is Satan is the source of the majority of Rin's problems and a good chunk of the plot.
  • Happily Adopted: Ask him about Fujimoto and you'll hear nothing but praise. Sure, there will be some grumbling about his old man but it's mostly positive. Which is why dissing him makes him really angry, especially after his Heroic Sacrifice.
    • Later played with. While Rin truly does love Fujimoto and considers him his real father, he also has a tendency to look at the past with rose tinted glasses and let Fujimoto's Heroic Sacrifice color his memories of the man. They actually seem to have had a somewhat strained relationship while the man was alive.
  • Hates Their Parent: Rin hates his biological father Satan because he's the cause of his "true" father Shiro Fujimoto's Heroic Suicide.
  • Healing Factor: Rin gets stabbed, smashed, and all around abused, and still keeps going, everything healing up to the point it might as well not as happened. Chop off his foot? No problem! Shura mentions that Rin doesn't scar at all. While pulling off a Did You Just Scam Cthulhu?, Yukio says shooting Rin in the head would only keep him down for twenty minutes. Chapter 96 reveals Rin recovers from being shot in the head in seconds-to-minutes. This is also how Rin survives the return of his demon heart, which downright carbonizes him at first.
  • Heal It With Fire: Rin, when defeating the Impure King, chants a mantra to purify the surrounding area. With the Power of Friendship and True Companions in his heart, he ensured the flames would only destroy the infection and not harm the other people fighting.
  • The Heart: So far Rin has 1) connected with Shiemi and helped her move forward after her grandmother's death 2) managed to understand and see Suguro's point of view in regards to Satan 3) comfort Konekomaru in regards to his worth AND Rin's "danger" as the Son of Satan. He also is the first one to try to make people feel better if they are down and is very observant in regards to people's feelings.
  • Heavenly Blue: He uses his blue flames to fight and exorcise demons, which is ironic considering blue flames are associated with Satan himself.
  • Hellfire: An inheritance from his "father". Also is the only demonic flame that attacks both the physical form and the spiritual one, allowing for a total kill.
  • Heroic Bastard: With his father being Satan and his Anti Anti Christ status it's only natural.
  • Heroic BSoD: On the eve of being locked up and sentenced to death while the Impure King is resurrected, as he can't draw his sword to help people, he wonders why Shiro saved him. When Shiemi arrives to break him out to help with the Impure King, he tells her maybe he's better off dead. Shiemi is horrified and insists she wants to help, but he loses his temper and his flames go out. She hugs him and shows him his flames didn't hurt her, which breaks him out of his BSOD. He still has trouble with his confidence but it improves as his friends tell him they trust him, ultimately allowing him to gain control of himself and his flames.
    • Becomes suicidal in Chapter 109 in response to learning his birth caused a massacre and having his worst fears about himself realized, leaving an opening for his demon self to try to control him.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: When alone and at his lowest, Rin has a tendency to insult and look down on himself.
  • Hero Protagonist: He's the good-hearted protagonist that wants to fight evil and protect people.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • He's an amazing cook. A-ma-zing.
    • He also likes emotional drama (aka Shojo) manga. An early chapter starts with him apparently reading one and crying.
    • He's surprisingly good at connecting with and inspiring others.
    • Has proven on various occasions (the confrontation with Ryuji in the fourth chapter for example) to be surprisingly level headed and sensible at times.
    • Rin is not ignorant to Yukio's issues and in fact fairly quickly realizes a good chunk of what's bothering him. He also, however, realizes he's too close to the problem to help unless Yukio chooses to talk to him.
    • Rin's laid back and almost childish personality is something that will make him a very good exorcist since it helps protect him against demonic possession something he is not immune to (most likely due to the fact he's half human).
    • On a darker note, it seems his self worth issues and the idea that he shouldn't have been born significantly predate his learning about his demon heritage.
  • Hot-Blooded: He is among the most energetic and headstrong of the main cast. Played with as it comes from him being emotionally honest and impulsive, but still has quite the bad temper, although it's mainly on par with other characters (see Ryuji below).
  • Human-Demon Hybrid: Rin is the offspring of a human woman and Satan; thus, his half-breed status gets brought up often in the series as he himself is unsure of his identity.
  • Hunter of His Own Kind:
    • Mephisto calls him the Blue Exorcist, who's chosen fate is to hunt and exterminate his own kind.
    • It's a huge part of how he sees himself as well. When forced to fight a zombie, which is just a living person infected by a parasitic demon in this series' mythos, he refuses to attack, only evading or staying on the defensive. He later reveals to Konekomaru that he has to be someone who defends people.
  • I Am What I Am: After the defeat of the Impure King, he realizes he must accept the Satanic Flames inside him and his own heritage if he is to grow as a person and Exorcist.
  • Idiot Hero: Compare him to Yukio, who is his professor. The fact he tends to slack off doesn't help either. At the same time, Rin's not as dumb as others and even himself believe, being good at thinking on his feet and actually improving scholastically, abet slowly. But he IS still an idiot, per say.
  • In a Single Bound: Rin is incredible when he jumps. It's like he's got springs or freaking rockets instead of legs.
  • Indy Ploy: Rin reacts in the moment and comes up with very good ones when facing a crisis.
  • In Touch with His Feminine Side:
    • Emotionally open (openly crying), enjoys cooking, honest to a fault and loves emotional drama in manga. He's seen making bunny rabbit apple slices in Chapter 80.
    • He has also proven to be very comfortable when confronted with something regarding his sexuality (the Transvestite Ghost) and apparently enjoyed crossdressing!
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: To show his idealistic ans heroic side.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Chapter 73 reveals Rin thinks Shiemi likes Yukio and is willing to not truly confess so he doesn't get in the way between the two of them. He's very shocked when Shiemi reveals she doesn't like anyone romantically that he gives away his crush on her anyways.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He has a good heart and genuinely loves his friends but is more often than not a bit abrasive due to his poor social skills. Despite his rough nature and tendency to be blunt, he's a friendly guy at heart. He's gradually growing out of the jerk part as his social skills improve.
  • Kid Hero: He's technically a teen, but his childish personality could qualify him as this. Reconstructed as his cheerful, laidback attitude makes him resistant to mental break downs and demonic possessions. His childish antics also come across mostly because of his No Social Skills status; he's as emotionally mature as the rest, if not more so considering some hints.
  • Killer Rabbit: Ch 109 reveals he was this as a newborn. He wasn't even a minute old when he leapt at and killed an exorcist.
  • Kill It with Fire: His modus operandi when fighting with demons. ...possibly a little too much.
  • Laser-Guided Tyke-Bomb: Is kept alive just to become a weapon to destroy Satan. Inverted since the ones who were raising him were good guys, and most of them had the good sense to be nice to him about it.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Both super strong and super fast, though he's sill in training to learn how to use it effectively.
  • Like Parent, Like Spouse: When Mephisto takes him to see the past, Rin can't help but think his mother's younger self reminds him of his crush Shiemi.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Pre-series he was the only one in his family to not be an exorcist, and managed to grow up semi-normal. Even now he doesn't know as much as the rest who were raised in the know one way or another, something that contribute to him giving the impression of the standard Idiot Hero.
    • There are still other things that both he and Yukio don't know about regarding their heritage, Satan, their Dad, and the Order in general.
  • Love at First Sight: He has been crushing hard on Shiemi since their first meeting.
  • Luminescent Blush: When he blushes, he can reach this level of blush.
  • Made of Iron: He can tank a lot before he needs his Healing Factor to kick in. He can survive getting shot in the face, and it won't keep him down for long.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • The kanji for Rin's name, 燐, means "Phosphorus". And said kanji has an interesting history behind it that also applies.
      • In addition, the Greek word for phosphorus, Φωσφόρος , literally means "light-bearer." In Latin, this is "lucem ferre," more commonly shortened to Lucifer. And this is also the name of the eldest son of Satan.
    • His last name also counts as Okumura is spelled "奥村" which can mean "Heart Village" or "The Heart of the Village".
  • A Mistake Is Born: No one wanted Satan's child to be born (aside from Yuri), and he knows it.
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: Comparing him to Ryuji, Yukio, and even Renzo, Rin doesn't seem to be very muscular, despite being far stronger than any of them. However, he's half-demon so his entire biological structure can be very different from a normal human'snote
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Retroactively. When Mephisto shows Rin the day he was born, Rin discovers he brutally murdered the exorcist army that tried to exorcise Satan's son. Witnessing his own newborn self's murder rampage makes Rin horrified at what he sees as confirmation that he's a monster that should have never been born.
  • Nature Versus Nurture: Falls solidly on the nurture side, as he is very much like his foster father. Thus he counts as a Upbringing Makes the Hero example. This is a good thing for Assiah as the other options are...far from pleasant. The flashback arc that reveals his mother also reveals that he's actually very much so like her meaning the nature part is also played straight.
  • Nice Guy: He is one of the sweetest guys you could ever encounter.
  • No Social Skills: Or more correctly, he's got the social skills of a six-year-old due to having no friends pre-series. He's been improving, but still comes across as an oddball thanks to it.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Whenever Rin loses his smile and hits his lowest, his crying is utterly heartbreaking.
  • Occult Blue Eyes: They mark him as the son of Satan.
  • One Hero, Hold the Weaksauce: Demon hearts are dangerous for demons to use, in part since their physical form can't handle the strain of throwing out their full power. Rin, either as a half-demon or the Son of Satan, can keep Kurikara drawn forever if he wants without any ill effects.
    • When Kurikara is shattered, it is revealed that the sword acted as a Power Limiter without which his true power floods his body causing a Superpower Meltdown. This still applies however, because he was strong enough to survive his own power and exist with full access to his heart.
  • One-Man Army: Rin's power alone could make up an exorcist army. At the moment of his birth, he went on to tear apart the entire army specially gathered to kill him.
  • Pajama-Clad Hero: The majority of the Impure King incident (starting in the morning where he meets the Shima brothers) Rin is in what is ultimately just his pajamas. Yes, Rin defeated the Eldritch Abomination that is the Impure King like that in bare feet to boot.
  • Parting-Words Regret: The last conversation Rin had with his father ended with Rin going You're Not My Father and Shiro slapping him for it. Made infinitely worse when Rin learns that him saying that was what made Shiro vulnerable to Satan's possession and forced him to kill himself to protect his sonnote . Needless to say, Rin feels incredibly guilty over this and when he sees Suguro saying something similar to his own father, Rin demands him to apologize before it's too late.
  • Playing with Fire: He's the inheritor of the Blue Flames.
  • Pointy Ears: Part of his demon heritage. They get more pronounced when he uses more power (ie draws Kurikara).
  • Polar Opposite Twins: Rin is childish (at first glance), Book Dumb, and rude while Yukio is responsible, intelligent, and well mannered. On the flip side Rin is ridiculously sweet, domestic, and sincere, while Yukio is more of a subtle Jerkass and has difficulty being open or honest.
  • The Pollyanna: No matter how bad things are, Rin does his best to stay cheerful.
  • Power Dyes Your Hair: After his sword broke and his demon heart returned to his body, Rin's black hair has turned white. It actually works to his favor at one point, as Shiro doesn't recognize him after Rin accidentally walks into the past version of his home with Mephisto's key.
  • Power Limiter: It turns out his sword is this. When it gets broken in the manga, all the power inside floods back into Rin, and his body instantly starts degrading like Mephisto and Lucifer from it all, but thankfully not for long as he regenerates strong enough to handle the full flame.
  • Real Men Can Cook: Shiro taught him to cook rather than fight to help him control his strength and get him to think about who and what he's doing things for.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Low level version, as his eyes gain a red pupil when he's accessing his demonic heritage.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni:
    • The energetic and passionate red oni to Yukio's reserved and serious blue. The tight-wound, nervous, and suppressed blue oni to Ryuji's headstrong and emotional red.
    • Rin is also a Blue Oni (reserved and hesitant) to Shiemi's Red Oni (eager and at times impulsive).

  • The Scapegoat: By virtue of being Satan's biological son, Rin is constantly used as a punching-bag to vent other people's ire towards his father and the "Blue Night" incident, his friends alienating him at the start of the Kyoto Arc and several exorcists in the True Cross either petitioning to put him down like a dog or going rogue to do it without permission.
  • Screw Destiny: Doesn't care about being a demon or a tykebomb—every time the subject is brought up, he just yells that he will become an exorcist.
  • Sensor Character: Rin is capable of sensing demons and can tell if they are powerful or not and even tell when they are entering a demon's territory. How far this ability goes is unknown at this point, and he's still in need of practice with it.
  • Shared Family Quirks: As revealed in flashbacks, Rin got the bad temper and rebellious streak of his adoptive father Shiro and the good heart and goofy personality of his mother Yuri.
  • She Is Not My Girlfriend: He denies it when Suguro and his friends call Shiemi his girlfriend, although he would very much like that to be the case.
  • Shrinking Violet: Not as much as his brother, but Rin's very self-conscious. Hell, just look at his first meeting between him and Shiemi in ch3! Shiemi's the more outgoing and cheery one compared to Rin.
  • Sibling Triangle: With his brother Yukio towards Shiemi.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: Rin hasn't shown even the slightest romantic interest in anyone but Shiemi. When under the effect of the Three Wise Monkeys, Rin openly admits that Shiemi is the only girl he wants to see naked.
  • Socially Awkward Hero: He can handle demons such as the Impure King but pre-series had no friends or real social experience...which shows.
  • Spanner in the Works: Mephisto openly tells him he can't predict or control what he does beyond a certain point.
  • Stealth Hi/Bye:
    • Of all people, Rin manages to pull this off in the Kyoto arc, disappearing from beside Shura and suddenly appearing nearby Tatsuma. Not even Shura knows how he did it.
    • It's not even the first time; he suddenly appeared with the exorcist team during the first reveal of Todo and the Impure King. No one in the team saw him coming.
    • Even before that, he popped up behind Yukio and bluffed himself on to the mission with Kuro.
    • Considering how fast he is (and how far he can jump), it's no surprise he can do this...the real shocker is how quiet Rin gets during this.
  • Stepford Smiler: Kato confirms that when things are tough, Rin tends to get more cheerful and upbeat in defense. Behind his optimistic and easygoing smiles, he has serious Survivor Guilt, questions why someone like him was saved through the Heroic Suicide of his adoptive father and at times thinks he shouldn't exist. Not to mention he constantly belittles himself and is flat out terrified of being alone. His self-doubts go back to before his awakening and are strong enough to shape his demon self, who flat out tells Rin he's everything he rejects in himself. Also turns out Rin has been looking to the future everyday in large part because he's terrified of the past.
  • Stock Shōnen Hero: He's a Hot-Blooded, simple-minded and energetic young hero who is on a quest To Be a Master. He often acts like a reckless idiot, but he has a good heart and can win almost anyone over with his personality. He cares deeply about his friends and is empowered by his wish to protect them. That said he's a reconstruction of this trope and plenty of original spins on this trope are inserted into Rin's character.
  • Street Smart: Contrasting his Book Dumb status Rin can be very perceptive and quick on the fly, and shows the ability to adapt to situations quickly. This contrasts him with Ryuji who is a notable aversion to this trope. This is noteworthy again since Rin is also suffering from No Social Skills at the same time.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: He looks physically identical to the clone of Azazel Satan possessed at the time of his conception, but with his mother's black hair and Tsurime Eyes.
  • Stuff Blowing Up: As of ch58 he's shown the ability to use his flames to blow stuff up.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: He can somewhat control his flames, but the longer he stays with his sword drawn, the more he loses control of himself. As shown in Chapter 14, he can completely stop acting like a human. Of course, that's before he accepts himself. By Inari, he's running around with Kurikara drawn for a long time with no bad side effects.
    • The full release of his heart brought it back with a vengeance. His demon side is now a fully realized facet of himself, lurking in the back of his mind, waiting for human Rin to weaken enough for him to take over.
  • Super-Speed: More implied than shown (at least on-screen, see Stealth Hi/Bye above) but Rin is wicked fast.
  • Super-Strength: The one power he's always had even before awakening is great strength. It caused...problems...at times. Mostly because, true to form, he tends to use it without thinking.
  • Supreme Chef: Cooking is said to be his "best feature". Word of God is that he never messes up and though he doesn't have anything truly fancy in his repertoire, he gets it perfectly every single time.
  • Survivor Guilt: Rin has flat out issues due to Shiro sacrificing himself to save him; early on he says that the reason he chose to be a exorcist was to not have to be in that position again.
  • Team Chef: Counts as this during the camping trip, taking over from the clueless and inexperienced Shiemi and Izumo to serve up an amazing curry.
    • He was later put in charge of food for the exwires Christmas party too.
    • And he's been seen cooking for the group a few times in later chapters.
  • Team Mom: Constantly shown as The Heart, worries over everyone, and bugs his brother about his diet. Yukio has lampshaded more than once by calling Rin "mom" when he gets particularly naggy and worried.
  • Technicolor Fire: It's blue like natural gas flames though generally not to this extent.
  • Telepathy: He and Kuro are able to communicate using telepathy by reading Kuro's mind. He's also able to "hear" the thoughts of other demons, since he used sound to find the ghost-child in an amusement park but no one else could hear it, and some demons seem to respond to his thoughts as well, though that might also be a result of sensing his "killing intent" towards them for attacking his friends (like when the Leaper attacked Ryuji after the teacher left or when Godaiin was being harassed in school). In the anime, this extends to Ukobach and a boar demon as well.
  • Tiger Versus Dragon: A textbook tiger to Suguro's dragon.
    • Rin is lazy, impulsive, tries to solve everything on his own, and usually with brute force alone,(though this is possibly justified by the fact he didn't have any friends) while Suguro is rather smart, hardworking, and loves cleaning and meditation, not to mention he's an eloquent reciter, and team work means a lot to him.
    • At the same time, Rin is more relaxed and at times cool headed compared to Ryuji. Not to mention more adaptable and willing to see that brute force isn't always the solution; in the team, he's one of the first to listen to Konekomaru when he comes up with a plan.
  • To Be a Master: Rin desires to be like Shiro and become the highest class Exorcist. While not his only goal, it is a major one.
  • Transformation Trinket: Kurikara acts a bit like this as much as Power Limiter considering how Rin's appearance changes when he draws it. Rin's plenty powerful even with it sheathed though.
  • Traumatic Superpower Awakening: Rin truly accesses his blue flames for the first time because he firmly believed the demon-possessed delinquent attacking him was going to kill him. He has a similar situation in regards to drawing Kurikara, where he has to either draw it or get dragged into Gehenna. Considering it coincides with him losing his foster father, one can't argue with how traumatic it really is.
  • Tsurime Eyes: Hinting at his strong will, occasional arrogance, and potentially dangerous nature. He inherited them from his mother.
  • Turn the Other Cheek: When Neuhaus attacks him, blaming him for blue night, Rin responds by offering him as many free hits as he wants while begging him to leave innocents out of his revenge.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: His main problem/strength. He is ridiculously strong and has the Blue Flames, but lack the control, knowledge, and experience to use them effectively. His raw power also sometimes acts as a crutch, giving him less incentive to learn the traditional exorcist methods.
  • Unstoppable Rage: He's prone to these in general, but his rampage through a mass of zombies in response to Izumo's distress in the Illuminati arc stands out.
  • Weak-Willed: Just one look at Hachiro's Hypnotic Eyes knocks Rin out.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy:
    • He was to show he's a capable exorcist to his brother Yukio who is already his teacher. Ironically, Yukio has always envied his tougher, more outwardly confident brother.
    • To Father Fujimoto too. Rin's goal of becoming Paladin was all about doing something that he thought would've made his dad proud.
  • The Watson: Due to his previous Locked Out of the Loop status, as well as his Book Dumb status, Rin tends to ask the questions that the audience needs answered.
  • Wreathed in Flames: Whenever he uses it or draws Kurikara, the blue flames appear around him.
  • You Killed My Father: He wants to kill his biological father, Satan, for killing his adoptive father, Shiro Fujimoto.
