Main Characters

     Rin Okumura

Voiced by: Nobuhiko Okamoto (Japanese, teenager), Akeno Watanabe (Japanese, child), Bryce Papenbrook (English, teenager) and Wendee Lee (English, child)

The protagonist and titular character. Rin and his twin brother Yukio were raised by Father Fujimoto Shiro. Something of a delinquent but with a good heart, he turns out to be the son of Satan. After discovering this and the death of his foster father, Rin has made it his goal to be a powerful exorcist, one strong enough to beat Satan. Is nice enough to be considered a cosmic joke on behalf of his blood father.
  • The Ace: Eventually becomes a version of this for the Exwire group, with Konekomaru referring to him as their 'trump card'
  • Achilles' Heel: It is suggested that Kurikara is this, as it contains his demon heart and demons are both stronger and more vulnerable with them out. Any damage to it could potentially kill him.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: In the manga his hair is pure black, the anime translated that color to dark blue.
  • Adaptational Wimp: Downplayed, but the anime shows Rin being injured and needing medical attention way more than in the manga. A good example is that in the anime, blocking Kuro's charge with his head gave him a nosebleed. Not so in the manga.
  • Adorkable: Oh boy, where do you start....? He is socially awkward, good natured, a bit of a goof, sweet natured...
  • Almighty Janitor:
    • In terms of overall combat he is a lot stronger than his fellow classmates. This is extremely evident when fighting Amaimon — while he easily curbstomped his allies, he had to put a little more effort defeating him.
    • Made even more obvious when Rin fought Amaimon with his sword drawn, almost defeating the latter if the battle wasn't interrupted. Amaimon, one of the strongest demons in Gehenna that no exorcist will be able to defeat on their own.
    • Expanded upon in episode 17, where he utterly trashes Amaimon, who was earlier shown to be casually defeating Shura and Angel - a high class exorcist and the strongest exorcist in the order, respectively. This is, however, anime only and in fact Rin can't take on Amaimon at full power in the manga. Though he won't die from that unlike most.
  • Animal Motifs: Acts a lot like a great big black cat. Kato has drawn him as a tiger person at least once.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: Inverted since he's the older brother, but he's definitely this for Yukio. It's played for drama since this makes Yukio look down on Rin as much as up and makes it hard for Rin to be taken seriously by Yukio and even others.
  • Anti Anti Christ: He's the son of Satan but he's a Nice Guy who wants to kick his father's ass.
  • Anti-Hero: The Disney variety due to his low social skills and at times jerky actions.
  • Badass Adorable: Considering his Adorkable status and often clueless and honest actions that contradict his "Son of Satan" status he also falls under this.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Badmouth Yukio and be prepared to get punched in the face hard.
    • Dissing Shiro or making Rin recall his Heroic Sacrifice isn't a good idea either.
    • When he's first introduced, he's beating up a gang of delinquents for torturing a flock of pigeons. His immediate move from casual to violent suggests that "hurting animals" might be another Berserk Button of his.
    • His reaction to Gedouin makes it very clear: don't be monstrous to others or harm anyone with him around. And definitely don't brag about it. He'll screw his demons only policy and roast you.
  • Berserk Mode: If he stays in his demonic state too long, he'll become more or less a vessel of violence and not much else. However, this is suggested to be a sign of how inexperienced and scared he is in regard to his demonic heritage. In fact, once he gets over his issues with being who he is, Rin has no trouble staying in his demon form for ridiculous amounts of time.
  • Betty and Veronica:
    • The rebellious and troublesome Veronica to Yukio's more reliable and gentlemanly Betty for Shiemi's Archie. The roles kind of get switched later on: Rin matures and becomes more of a Nice Guy, while Yukio shows more of his repressed dark side.
    • Not to mention the Archie between Tsundere Izumo and Girl Next Door Shiemi.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: A genuinely nice guy who tries so hard to have friends and honestly does care for others. Just don't piss off the guy with Hell Fire, Super Strength, and is the resident Anti Anti Christ.
  • Big Brother Instinct: As a child, he was very protective of Yukio and would chase off people that would bully him. As they got older, Rin stopped looking after Yukio as much since he can now take care of himself, but Rin is still very protective of his younger brother.
"I would never hurt my younger brother!"
  • The Big Guy: Since he is the strongest of the group with little else to offer Konekomaru recommends that he acts as a backup version of this.
  • Book Dumb: Especially when compared to Yukio, since while Yukio is a Teen Genius Rin is a former junior high school drop out. However, it's downplayed compared to other shounen heroes to a more realistic level. He's just not good with bookwork, but he's honestly quite smart outside of it and he's been improving slowly as a later chapter reveals (going from only getting 2% on a test - to be fair was tossed into both normal school and exorcist school at the last minute - to getting 68% in the same course. For clarification, 30% is a passing grade in Japan - he got 8% over twice that).
  • Brutal Honesty: At times, since he hasn't had much experience interacting with others due to negative past experiences.
  • Bully Hunter: Heavily implied as the audience first sees him beating up a bunch of guys for killing/torturing pigeons, he always used to protect Yukio and even have a few flashbacks that show he mostly got into fights this way. Arguably influenced his decision to become an Exorcist; hostile demons can count as really big bullies since they target humans.
  • Cain and Abel:
  • Calling the Old Man Out: He wants to kill daddy Satan.
  • Can't Hold His Liquor: As shown when Shura accidentally mixes up their drinks.
  • Character Development: Already in practice. He started out much angrier and discontented than he is now. Although still insecure, he seems to be happier and a bit more easygoing. Though it is possible at least some of this is faked.
  • Child of Two Worlds: Rin's half-breed status (particularly his father's blood) drives a good chunk of the plot and Rin often wonders where he fits. Ucchusama even lampshades this by wondering if Rin is a human or a demon.
  • Cloud Cuckoo Lander: At times has strange behavior thanks to his No Social Skills.
  • Cool Sword: His sword acts as both his Demon Heart and was a prized possession of Suguro's temple beforehand. It is also a Flaming Sword as a side effect of containing Rin's blue flames.
  • Cover-Blowing Superpower: In the beginning, few knew his heritage. He blows it in chapter 13 by using his blue flames.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Rin might not be the greatest at book work and often fumbles his words, but he's still the Son of Satan. His cheery attitude often hides someone who's very introspective and observant as well.
  • Cry Cute: Whenever Rin loses his smile and hits his lowest, his crying is utterly heartbreaking. Especially during the Heroic B.S.O.D. situation described below.
  • Cute Little Fangs: As a half-demon he comes with a set of sharper than usual eyeteeth. Considering his character, they mostly just serve to enhance his rather adorable looks and personality. See below for when they don't.
  • Cute Monster Guy: Gender flip of the usual. Yes he's the demonic bastard half-breed spawn of Satan who has the dreaded Blue Flames and can bench press cars. He also is incredible adorable and even attractive, especially when his Nice Guy nature gets taken into account.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Despite being a son of Satan, he is a nice guy.
  • Death Glare: Has one strong enough to make lesser demons back off. If he's doing this and his eyes have suddenly changed to be blue with red pupils, that's your cue to get out of there before he decides to break out his Blue Flames.
  • Does Not Know His Own Strength:
    • Played Straight in the first episode of the anime, where Rin causes a series of disasters in an attempt to get his job. Completely forgotten in subsequent episodes, and no wonder...
    • As it is Averted full stop in the manga: Rin knows his strength well enough to function fully as a normal person (who just happens to have super strength) and never loses control of it even when angry. Word of God even says he has "clever hands", suggesting he's very deft and careful with his hands despite his strength.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?:
    • In the Anime, rescues a young girl from a tower of falling cans while on the job in the first episode... only to reveal he got fired for it. At least the girl's father thanked him for saving her.
    • In the manga, Rin saves all of the exwires' lives with his blue flames...only to be rejected for being the Son of Satan. Luckily the issues work out but OUCH.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: Whenever Kato colours him, particularly early on, he looks freakishly pale. Considering his half-demon nature, go figure.
  • Establishing Character Moment: The audience is introduced to him punching out a punk in one blow, being called a demon as the entire group of delinquents flees, saying how they are more monstrous than him (with dead pigeons around him to prove it), looking at his bruised knuckles and realizing he's going to get scolded, then watching a pigeon fly off and wondering what he's doing. Setting up a good natured, strong guy with problems and a good awareness of himself. We then go on to see him interacting with others, showing a bit of a temper problem and how lost he is as to what he wants to do in life. And then he's the Son of Satan who just had his father figure get hit with a Death by Origin Story.
  • Expy: He's a nice guy, uses a flaming sword, has blue fire, is incredibly protective, is prone to brief spouts of arrogance, and is rather popular in both the story and in real life. All of these traits can also be attributed to Archangel Michael. Ironic isn't it?
  • Fangs Are Evil: When Rin is pissed, has drawn Kurikara and has gone out of control, his fangs become more pronounced and look much more deadly. He has a tendency to growl and howl in this state.
  • Familiar: His is a Mega Neko.
  • Faux Flame: Rin learns how to control what his flames will and will not burn.
  • Foil: To Yukio, he has the friendly personality that everyone loves. But he's also Book Dumb and sometimes can act rather foolishly.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: The foolish to Yukio's responsible due to his Book Dumb and impulsive actions. At the same time, Rin is the one who's more mentally stable while Yukio falls under The Corruptible. And, for bonus points, most of his "impulsive" actions are very smart and good Indy Ploys that work.
  • Freudian Excuse: His father is Satan. Enough said.
  • Friend to All Children: If The Movie has any say, Rin is very good with kids. An omake has him suggesting having enough kids for a soccer team.
  • Friendless Background: Much like Shiemi below, he didn't have real friends before coming to the cram school. In his case, it was an All of the Other Reindeer situation that his awkwardness and Super Strength didn't help with.
  • Gender-Blender Name: Let's be honest; when it comes to the name "Rin" the other people in anime and manga that you think of most tend to be girls.
  • The Gadfly: Shows this in regards to Ryuji and Yukio; but mostly Ryuji. At least one thing he has in common with Mephisto...enjoys people's reactions in that regard. He's also pranked Shiemi using his tail pre-Reveal. However, most of the time it seems to be a weird way of relieving not only his stress, but his target's as well; hard to be scared when you are finding yourself poked at by an irritating half-demon.
  • Godzilla Threshold:
    • Crosses this in the first freaking chapter since he was told to not draw Kurikara...but chooses to anyways to try to save his foster father and get out of the Gehenna Gate. It only saves him from the Gehenna Gate.
    • Crosses it again in ch13 when he chooses to draw Kurikara to save his friends despite how that would probably get him killed by the Order. He narrrowly escapes that fate and succeeds at saving them...only for them all to reject him for his heritage for various reasons. The poor kid.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Averted. Though at first glance he seems this way, Rin is surprisingly even tempered. The ones who are more apt to truly lose their temper are Ryuji and Yukio. Rin only truly loses his temper if the Berserk Buttons mentioned above get pressed after the first two chapters.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Human and demon hybrid, the fact the demon in question is Satan is the source of the majority of Rin's problems and a good chunk of the plot.
  • Happily Adopted: Ask him about Fujimoto and you'll hear nothing but praise. Sure, there will be some grumbling about his old man but it's mostly positive. Which is why dissing him is a major Berserk Button, especially after his Heroic Sacrifice.
  • Healing Factor: Rin gets stabbed, smashed, and all around abused, and still keeps going, everything healing up to the point it might as well not as happened. Chop off his foot? No problem! Shura even suggests around the point she reveals her own healing ability, which is strong around a certain person that he doesn't scar at all despite all he goes through.
    • Later, Yukio reveals that even getting shot in the head would, at most, keep him down for twenty minutes. This guy is like freaking Wolverine!
  • Heal It with Fire: Rin, when defeating the Impure King, chants a mantra to purify the surrounding area. With the Power of Friendship and True Companions in his heart, he ensured the flames would only destroy the infection and not harm the other people fighting.
  • The Heart: So far Rin has 1) connected with Shiemi and helped her move forward after her grandmother's death 2) managed to understand and see Suguro's point of view in regards to Satan 3) comfort Konekomaru in regards to his worth AND Rin's "danger" as the Son of Satan. He also is the first one to try to make people feel better if they are down and is very observant in regards to people's feelings.
  • Hellfire: As it is an inheritance from his "father". Not to mention the only demonic flame that attacks both the physical form and the spiritual one, allowing for a total kill.
  • The Hero: He's the good-hearted protagonist that wants to fight evil and protect people.
  • Heroic Bastard: With his father being Satan and his Anti Anti Christ status it's only natural.
  • Heroic B.S.O.D.: Occurs in chapters 25 and 26 of the manga, where he thinks he's better off dead, can't unsheathe his sword due to lack of confidence, and is sentenced to execution. After a Cool Down Hug from Shiemi, he recovers, but his confidence issues are still present and prevent him from drawing his sword for quite a while, and it's obvious that he's been suffering from a very well-hidden form of Survivor's Guilt since Fujimoto's death.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: When alone and at his lowest, Rin has a tendency to insult and look down on himself.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: A constant struggle for him as he never wants to become a true monster himself.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • He's an amazing cook. A-ma-zing.
    • He also likes emotional drama (aka Shojo) manga. An early chapter starts with him apparently reading one and crying.
    • Not to mention surprisingly good at connecting with and inspiring others.
    • Has proven on various occasions (the confrontation with Ryuji in the fourth chapter for example) to be surprisingly level headed and sensible at times.
    • Rin is not ignorant to Yukio's issues and in fact realizes quickly a good chunk of what's bothering him and causing the problem. He also, however, realizes he's too close to the problem to help unless Yukio chooses to talk to him.
    • Rin's laid back and almost childish personality is something that will make him a very good exorcist since it helps protect him against demonic possession something he is not immune to (most likely due to the fact he's half human) and is a definite risk in regards to Satan himself.
  • Hot-Blooded: He is the most energetic and headstrong of the main cast. Played with as it comes from him being emotionally honest and impulsive, not by having a bad temper. Certainly has one, but not as bad as other characters (see Ryuji below).
  • Hunter of His Own Kind:
    • Mephisto calls him the Blue Exorcist, who's chosen fate is to hunt and exterminate his own kind.
    • It's a huge part of how he sees himself as well. When forced to fight a zombie, which is just a living person infected by a parasitic demon in this series' mythos, he refuses to attack, only evading or staying on the defensive. He later reveals to Konekomaru that he has to be someone who defends people.
  • I Am What I Am: After the defeat of the Impure King, he realizes he must accept the Satanic Flames inside him and his own heritage if he is to grow as a person and Exorcist.
  • Idiot Hero: Compare him to Yukio who is his professor. The fact he tends to slack off doesn't help either. At the same time, Rin's not as dumb as others and even himself believe, being good at thinking on his feet and actually improving scholastically, abet slowly.
  • In a Single Bound: Rin is incredible when he jumps. It's like he's got springs or freaking rockets instead of legs.
  • Indy Ploy: Rin reacts in the moment and comes up with very good ones when facing a crisis.
  • In Touch with His Feminine Side:
    • Emotionally open (openly crying), enjoys cooking, honest to a fault and loves emotional drama in manga. He's seen making 'bunny rabbit apple slices in ch80!
    • He has also proven to be very comfortable when confronted with something regarding his sexuality (the Transvestite Ghost) and apparently enjoyed crossdressing!
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Chapter 73 reveals Rin thinks Shiemi likes Yukio and is willing to not truly confess so he doesn't get in the way between the two of them. He's very shocked when Shiemi reveals she doesn't like anyone romantically that he gives away his crush on her anyways.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He has a good heart and genuinely loves his friends but is more often than not a bit abrasive due to his poor social skills. He also is something of The Gadfly, but his reasons behind it generally seem to be of distraction and relieving of stress of them as much as him.
  • Kid Hero: He's technically a teen, but his childish personality could qualify him as this. Reconstructed as his cheerful, laidback attitude makes him resistant to mental break downs and demonic possessions. His childish antics also come across mostly because of his No Social Skills status; he's as mature as the rest, if not more so considering some hints.
  • Kill It with Fire: His modus operandi when fighting with demons. ...possibly a little too much.
  • Laser-Guided Tykebomb: Is kept alive just to become a weapon to destroy Satan. Inverted since the ones who were raising him were good guys, and most of them had the good sense to be nice to him about it.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Both super strong and super fast, though it's more potential right now since Rin's still training.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Pre-series he was the only one in his family to not be an exorcist, and managed to grow up semi-normal. Even now he doesn't know as much as the rest who were raised in the know one way or another; something that contribute to him giving the impression of the standard Idiot Hero. There are hints that there are other things that both he and Yukio don't know about their heritage and Satan.
  • Luminescent Blush: When he blushes, he can reach this level of blush.
  • Made of Iron: He can tank a lot before he needs his Healing Factor to kick in.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • The kanji for Rin's name, 燐, means "Phosphorus". And said kanji has an interesting history behind it that also applies.
      • In addition, the Greek word for phosphorus, Φωσφόρος , literally means "light-bearer." In Latin, this is "lucem ferre," more commonly shortened to Lucifer. And this is also the name of the eldest son of Satan.
    • His last name also counts as Okumura is spelled "奥村" which can mean "Heart Village" or "The Heart of the Village".
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: Comparing him to Ryuji and even Renzo, Rin doesn't seem to be as muscular. However, he's half-demon so his entire biological structure can be very different from a normal human'snote
  • Nature vs. Nurture: Falls solidly on the nurture side, as he is very much like his foster father. Thus he counts as a Upbringing Makes the Hero example. This is a good thing for Assiah as the other options are...far from pleasant.
  • Nice Guy: Despite his rough nature and tendency to be blunt, he's a friendly guy at heart.
  • No Social Skills: Or more correctly, he's got the social skills of a six-year-old due to having no friends pre-series. He's been improving, but still comes across as an oddball thanks to it.
  • Pajama-Clad Hero: The majority of the Impure King incident (starting in the morning where he meets the Shima brothers) Rin is in what is ultimately just his pajamas. Yes, Rin defeated the Eldritch Abomination that is the Impure King like that in bare feet to boot.
  • Playing with Fire: As the inheritor of the Blue Flames, this is obvious.
  • Pointy Ears: Part of his demon heritage. They get more pronounced when he uses more power (ie draws Kurikara).
  • Polar Opposite Twins: With Yukio who is as responsible, intelligent, and well mannered while Rin is childish (at first glance), Book Dumb, and rude. However, it's Yukio who's more of a Jerkass while Rin is ridiculously sweet.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Low level version, as his eyes gain a red pupil when he's accessing his demonic heritage.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The energetic and passionate red oni to Yukio's reserved and serious blue. The tight-wound, nervous, and suppressed blue oni to Ryuji's headstrong and emotional red.
    • Rin is also a Blue Oni (reserved and hesitant) to Shiemi's Red Oni (eager and at times impulsive). Or anyone else - if it's not Yukio, Rin tends to be the Blue Oni.
  • Screw Destiny: Doesn't care about being a demon or a tykebomb—every time the subject is brought up, he just yells that he will become an exorcist.
  • Sensor Character: Rin is capable of sensing demons and can tell if they are powerful or not; even tell when they are entering a demon's territory. How far this ability is unknown at this point.
  • Shrinking Violet: Not as much as his brother, but Rin's very self-conscious. Hell, just look at his first meeting between him and Shiemi in ch3! Shiemi's the more outgoing and cheery one compared to Rin.
  • Sibling Triangle: With his brother Yukio towards Shiemi.
  • Socially-Awkward Hero: He can handle demons such as the Impure King but pre-series had no friends or real social experience...which shows.
  • Stealth Hi/Bye:
    • Of all people, Rin manages to pull this off in the Kyoto arc, disappearing from besides Shura and suddenly appearing nearby Tatsuma. Not even Shura knows how he did it.
    • It's not even the first time; he suddenly appeared with the exorcist team during the first reveal of Todo and the Impure King. No one in the team saw him coming. He also does this before even that, popping up behind Yukio and bluffing himself on to the mission with Kuro. Considering how fast he is (and how far he can jump), it's no surprise he can do this...the real shocker is how quiet Rin gets during this.
  • Stepford Smiler: Has shows signs of being a low level version of this... Alternatively, it could be that he's actually a very high version, as it took many chapters to get even a hint things weren't as they seemed. And what is wrong? He has serious Survivor Guilt, questions why he was saved and at times thinks he shouldn't exist. Not to mention constantly belittles himself and is flat out terrified of being alone. Kato confirms that when things are tough he tends to get more cheerful and upbeat in defense.
  • Street Smart: Contrasting his Book Dumb status Rin is very perceptive and quick on the fly and shows the ability to adapt to situations quickly. This contrasts him with Ryuji who is a notable aversion to this trope. This is noteworthy again since Rin is also suffering from No Social Skills at the same time.
  • Stuff Blowing Up: As of ch58 he's shown the ability to use his flames to blow stuff up.
  • Super-Powered Evil Side: He can somewhat control his flames, but the longer he stays with his sword drawn, the more he loses control of himself. As shown in Chapter 14, he can completely stop acting like a human. Of course, that's before he accepts himself. By Inari, he's running around with Kurikara drawn for a long time with no bad side effects.
  • Super Speed: More implied than shown (at least on-screen, see Stealth Hi/Bye above) but Rin is wicked fast.
  • Super Strength: The one power he's always had even before awakening is great strength. It caused...problems...at times. Mostly because, true to form, he tends to use it without thinking.
  • Supreme Chef: It is said to be his "best feature". Word of God is that he never messes up and though he doesn't have anything truly fancy in his repertoire, he gets it perfectly every single time.
  • Team Chef: Counts as this during the camping trip, taking over from the clueless and inexperienced Shiemi and Izumo to serve up an amazing curry.
  • Team Mom: Constantly shown as The Heart, worries over everyone, and bugs his brother about his diet. Yukio has lampshaded more than once by calling Rin "mom" when he gets particularly naggy and worried.
  • Technicolor Fire: It's blue like natural gas flames though generally not to this extent.
  • Telepathy: He and Kuro are able to communicate using telepathy by reading Kuro's mind. He's also able to "hear" the thoughts of other demons, since he used sound to find the ghost-child in an amusement park but no one else could hear it, and some demons seem to respond to his thoughts as well, though that might also be a result of sensing his "killing intent" towards them for attacking his friends (like when the Leaper attacked Ryuji after the teacher left or when Godaiin was being harassed in school). In the anime, this extends to Ukobach and a boar demon as well.
  • Transformation Trinket: Kurikara acts a bit like this as much as Power Limiter considering how Rin's appearance changes when he draws it. Rin's plenty powerful even with it sheathed though.
  • Traumatic Superpower Awakening: Rin truly accesses his blue flames for the first time because he firmly believed the demon-possessed delinquent attacking him was going to kill him. He has a similar situation in regards to drawing Kurikara, where he has to either draw it or get dragged into Gehenna. Considering it coincides with him losing his foster father, one can't argue with how traumatic it really is.
  • Survivor Guilt: Rin has flat out issues due to Shiro sacrificing himself to save him; early on he says that the reason he chose to be a exorcist was to not have to be in that position again.
  • Tiger Versus Dragon: A textbook tiger to Suguro's dragon.
    • Rin is lazy, impulsive, tries to solve everything on his own, and usually with brute force alone,(though this is possibly justified by the fact he didn't have any friends) while Suguro is rather smart, hardworking, and loves cleaning and meditation, not to mention he's an eloquent reciter, and team work means a lot to him.
    • At the same time, Rin is more relaxed and at times cool headed compared to Ryuji. Not to mention more adaptable and willing to see that brute force isn't always the solution; in the team, he's one of the first to listen to Konekomaru when he comes up with a plan.
  • To Be a Master: Rin desires to be like Shiro and become the highest class Exorcist. While not his only goal, it is a major one.
  • Tsundere: A mild familiar version, mostly towards Yukio but comes out at times in regards to Shiro. He also at times tries to deny how much he's attracted to Shiemi. As ch73 reveals, it's partially because he's in a I Want My Beloved to Be Happy situation towards both Shiemi and Yukio.
  • Tsurime Eyes: Hinting at his strong will, occasional arrogance, and potentially dangerous nature.
  • Turn the Other Cheek: When Neuhaus attacks him, blaming him for blue night, Rin responds by offering him as many free hits as he wants while begging him to leave innocents out of his revenge.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: His main problem/strength. He is ridiculously strong and has the Blue Flames but without the control, knowledge, and experience to use both.
  • "Well Done, Son!" Guy: To his brother Yukio. Ironically, Yukio has always envied his tougher, more confident brother which makes him more susceptible to The Dark Side.
  • The Watson: Due to his previous Locked Out of the Loop status, as well as his Book Dumb status, Rin tends to ask the questions that the audience needs answered.
  • Wreathed in Flames: Whenever he uses it or draws Kurikara, the blue flames appear around him.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: Anime only. It is a show called Blue Exorcist after all. Considering he glows blue flames and is half-demon, it's justified.
  • You Killed My Father: He wants to kill his biological father, Satan, for killing his adoptive father, Shiro Fujimoto.

     Yukio Okumura
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/blue_exorcist_yukio_5627.jpg
Voiced by: Jun Fukuyama (Japanese, teenager), Ayumi Fujimura (Japanese, child) and Johnny Yong Bosch (English)

Rin's younger twin brother, a professor, and a Middle First-Class Exorcist. Very smart and mature acting. A calm and a competent teacher. He's got issues. Many issues.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Is fondly called "Yuki-chan" ("Yuki" in the dub) by Shiemi.
  • Adorkable: Generally the calm, collected guy...but put him in a social situation and he generally falls to pieces as his basic shy nature comes to the front. Multiply this if it involves Shiemi.
  • Badass Bookworm: Very intelligent, top of his class, the main teacher for the cast, and very adept at kicking ass.
  • Beauty Mark: Has three of them and he's a quite embarrassed by them. An omake reveals he has quite a few more moles all over his body and he's ashamed of each and every one of them and is scared of them multiplying.
  • Beneath the Mask: Underneath his cool, collected exterior Yukio is a complete mental wreck who is hairs away from turning into the monster he previously swore he would never be.
  • Berserk Button: Same as Rin, he won't stand for people criticizing his foster father. He also can't stand Rin being "childish", Shura's teasing, being kept out of the loop, people asking him if he's alright, being called "weak"...he's got quite a few triggers in fact.
  • Betty and Veronica: The reliable and gentlemanly Betty to Rin's rebellious and troublesome Veronica for Shiemi's Archie. Or so it starts...
  • Beware the Nice Ones:
    • No matter how nice he may seem he is still a very effective exorcist. Not to mention, like his brother, he does have a temper and has enough demonic blood to make him really scary when he gets mad.
    • Hell, it's fair to say he's scarier than Rin when he gets mad, and considering he lacks Rin's laid-back demeanor and has difficulty managing his stress, he tends to lose his temper a lot more.
  • Big Brother Worship: When he was very little he definitely looked up to Rin. Now though, he looks down on him and with resentment.
  • Big Little Brother: He's extremely smart (got the top score in his incoming class), tall, very handsome, and a well accomplished Middle First Class Exorcist at 15 years old. Compare him to his older, shorter, less brilliant twin, Rin, who's only an Exwire currently. This means Yukio puts a lot of unnecessary stress on himself in that position and Rin truthfully doesn't need to be "babied" like Yukio does with him.
  • Bishie Sparkle: On occasion though mostly as jokes or imagine spots.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Downplayed for now but despite Yukio making a show of being a polite, mature, and considerate Nice Guy, his real personality is more that of a Jerk with a Heart of Gold than what he pretends to be.
  • Broken Ace: There isn't anything he can't do, but he has a great level of self-hatred for his own weaknesses, and on some level, hates his own brother and the only father he ever knew. He also is a sore loser, and his tendency to internalize his problems as much as insistence on being "adult-like" is definitely not a good thing.
  • Cain and Abel: Played with. He looks like the good son of the pair, being a polite exorcist and all, but he came within a hair's width of shooting his brother in the third episode/second chapter. Then they settle into more of a Vitrolic Best Buds relationship which is their default relationship. There are hints that Yukio, what with his status as The Corruptible, might go to the bad.
  • Cassandra Truth: To get Hachiro to believe in his act in making a contract in Chapter 77, he flat-out says he wants the demon sword and healing power like Rin and was willing to do whatever it took. His brother and Shura thought it was all an act. Everyone following the story knows not a word of it was a lie.
  • Child Soldier: He started training to be an exorcist when he was seven years old and it shows.
  • Clueless Chick Magnet: He gets a lot of attention from women In-Universe, but he's usually too wrapped up in his studies to realize what their romantic overtures mean.
  • The Comically Serious: At times, due to his tendency to be as serious as possible. At the same time, he does like gag manga.
  • The Corruptible: Stated by Toudou, in full demon get-up mind, that his envy and hatred towards Rin (and the self-loathing these feelings create) makes him more susceptible to becoming a demon.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Chapter 8 establishes he has a surprisingly hefty stash of spare glasses and that's not even getting into the amount of bullets he carries...
  • Cute Bookworm: Mostly when younger, but he's still Adorkable enough now to still qualify.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Has shown shades of wisecracking in the manga and the Japanese version of this anime. It's more prominent in the English dub, courtesy of Alex von David's script and Johnny Yong Bosch's performance.
  • Declaration of Protection: Has sworn to protect his older brother. This is a full time and permanent commitment. Yukio has built his entire life around being his brother's keeper. Part of him wishes to be more than that, but at the same time he's been conditioned to see Rin as "helpless" without him to "supervise" (read: control) him.
  • Demonic Possession: In the anime, by his father, because he is the only vessel that won't blow up immediately.
  • Did You Just Scam Cthulhu?: Tricks Hachiro into removing Shura's tattoo in Chapter 77, freeing her from the contract, by offering himself after pretending to shoot his brother with real bullets, long enough to keep him down for twenty minutes. The moment Shura is free, Rin fries him. The only snag is that... well, Hachiro heals really quickly and is pissed.
  • Die or Fly: He's trying to invoke it in order to awaken his power, throwing himself into increasingly dangerous scenarios like attempting to drown himself, until he finally throws himself off of a building in Chapter 72. He then tops it in the next chapter by putting a gun to his head!
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Shura calls him "four-eyed chicken".
  • Empowered Badass Normal: In Chapter 30/Episode 23 Yukio starts manifesting abilities related to his heritage.
  • Foil:
    • To Rin, he has the brains and experience, but is missing out on Rin's friendly and optimistic outlook.
    • To Ryuji, while they both have similarities Yukio is heading to a breakdown and refusing to seek help while the first thing Ryuji does upon having his realization is seek out help.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: The responsible to Rin's foolish because he is a good student who prefers logical choices over emotional choices. However, Yukio is the one who's the more mentally fragile while Rin is the one able to cook and play homemaker.
  • Freak Out: Following an arduous battle with Toudou, Toudou regenerates from pieces on the ground and grabs him with a disembodied hand telling Yukio that his self-loathing is the first step to becoming a demon, and that Yukio's true nature is a demon. Bullets and screaming ensue.
  • Goofy Print Underwear: In the Spin-Off he reveals that he has boxers with cats all over it.
  • Green Eyes: Showing his prodigy status and hinting at his demonic heritage as well as the fact he's not as normal as he seems. Most likely also crosses over with the trope below as well.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Towards his older brother and father. Best displayed in chapter 35: Tatsuma praises Rin for being "a great man like his father", (Fujimoto Shiro, not Satan), and the look on Yukio's face says it all.
  • Guns Akimbo: Since he's ambidexterious this happens at times like the anime trailer shows.
  • The Gunslinger: As a Dragoon Meister, he uses guns.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: No, really. He's good at hiding the fact he has one, but he's very prone to getting frustrated and even angry at people (mostly Rin and Shura, though others have ticked him off at times). Contrast his brother who is more laid backed.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Subverted, in that he was too sickly to receive any demonic power despite being Rin's twin. He's regularly tested and no one can find anything. But he can manifest demonic abilities..
  • Happily Adopted: Until Fujimoto died, he was just as happy with the situation as Rin. Though later Played With as it turns out Yukio has a lot of issues from the exorcist training Shiro gave him and feels like he was The Unfavourite.
  • Heroic Bastard: Like his brother above; his father is Satan. However the "heroic" part might not last...
  • Heroic B.S.O.D.: Has a few ones in related to his dormant powers drawing interest from various villains.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: His Broken Ace feelings and self-loathing could easily turn him into the very thing he fights. Lampshaded by Mephisto as he quotes the saying while observing Yukio.
  • Hidden Depths: Reads Jump Square every month and even likes gag manga, of all things.
  • Hot Wings: In the anime following his possession by Satan.
  • Improbable Age: He is the Exwires' teacher and Rin's younger twin brother. Deconstructed since the effects this would have on a real person is shown.
  • Jerkass Realization: In ch80 he finally realizes that his behavior is awful. However, the way the page looks and his expression suggests this is not a good thing.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Though he pretends otherwise, this is what Yukio actually is underneath his masks.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: And he knows it well. On the other hand, he appears to be the main reason why Rin is still locked out of the loop in regards to things most exorcist candidates his age know. He rooms with and teaches his brother, and yet even with how he distrusts Mephisto he doesn't tell Rin anything in that regard?
  • Meaningful Name: Yuki or "Snow". Shows his more cool-headed and smart approach to things, as well as his fragile mental state.
  • Minored In Ass Kicking: Much to his older brother's surprise, he is a formidable gunman in addition to his academic studies.
  • Near-Rape Experience: Hachiro forces Shura through Mind Manipulation into nearly doing this to him in Chapter 77, but thankfully Rin intervened.
  • No Social Skills: Not as bad as Rin but Yukio doesn't understand most ordinary social norms, like texting ahead when you are going to be late and what reaction he should make in regards to a prank.
  • Polar Opposite Twins: With Rin. Yukio is as responsible, intelligent, and well mannered while Rin is childish (at first glance), Book Dumb, and rude. However, it's Yukio who's more of a Jerkass while Rin is ridiculously sweet.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The blue to Rin's red being more controlled and cautious.
  • The Resenter: Towards Rin because he feels like Rin was given a more privileged life and that his position as the "only" one able to "protect" Rin is unfair.
  • Scary Shiny Glasses: Whenever he wants to be imposing.
  • Scholarship Student: Mentioned only at the beginning, but Yukio had to get into True Cross Academy via this due to having a poor background. He managed to be the top scorer for all the students entering the school.
  • Ship Tease: Increasingly gets teased with SHURA.
  • Shrinking Violet: When he was a kid he was not as assertive as he is now and it still shows up sometimes. In fact, his inability to open up to others that comes from this is the source of the majority, if not all, his problems.
  • Sibling Triangle: With his brother Rin towards Shiemi.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: One of the most book-smart members of the cast.
  • Socially-Awkward Hero: Is an Exorcist prodigy and is a very skillful Dragoon and Doctor but didn't really develop friendships pre-series and is still enough of a Shrinking Violet that he tends to fumble in regards to social situations.
  • Sore Loser: Yukio really dislikes being second and it gets worse if it involves Rin.
  • Specs of Awesome: He is an effective exorcist and a professor.
  • Stepford Smiler: He hides his resentment and jealousy towards Rin very well. Though he doesn't hide the fact something is wrong well he can hide the fact what exactly it is. Anyone who knows him well enough can see through him enough to know something is up. Unfortunately, no one seems to realize that Yukio is turning into a Type C!
  • Stoic Spectacles: In addition to very self-controlled (most of the time)...
  • Summon Magic: Though not having a meister as a Tamer, he summons a group of Naiads to imprison Saburota Toudou in a sphere of water. Unfortunately due to his inexperience, Toudou immediately escapes. He uses the Naiads again on himself in an attempt to trigger his eye change but is unable to sustain the summon before he gets exhausted or knocked out.
  • Took a Level in Badass: He had the nickname "Crybaby" when he was younger for a reason, now not so much.
  • Took A Level In Jerk Ass: Despite what is mentioned in Took a Level in Kindness, since Inari, Yukio has once again slipped back into a jerkass attitude, and especially towards Rin.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Towards Rin, following everything that happened with the Kraken. Not to say that relationship is all better by any means, but his Jerkass attitude has decreased.
  • Tsundere: Familiar version. Very conflicted about Rin, but also loves him.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Downplayed but comparing Yukio in the few flashbacks when he was just a kid to his present day self is...disheartening.
  • Villain Takes an Interest: Toudou has an unhealthy interest in him. Lucifer has taken an interest in Yukio as well, and is willing to awaken his dormant powers to "save" him.
  • Wham Line: Just give me your flames won't you!note
  • Wise Beyond His Years:
    • Rin's younger brother and already smart enough to be a teacher, doctor, and experienced exorcist. Deconstructed as he's not as wise as he acts, being ultimately still an unsure teenager underneath it all. For example, Yukio has no clue how to properly interact with his age group and his status as "wiser" means there's a gap between him and his potential friends.
    • As time goes on, the "wiser" part turns out to be increasingly fake and Yukio turns out to be very, very fallible and even downright stupid, more so than his brother.
  • Wreathed in Flames: When possessed by Satan in the anime, the blue flames surround him.

     Shiemi Moriyama
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/blue_exorcist_shiemi_2358.jpg
Voiced by: Kana Hanazawa (Japanese) and Christine Marie Cabanos (English)

A girl who had a demon affecting (crippling) her legs, who loves gardening and all nature. Good-natured and sweet. Demonstrates extensive knowledge of plants. Used to be seen only in a kimono and still has a tendency to wear them. The Love Interest for both Yukio and Rin. Also, quickly takes a major leap in badass and becomes the second strongest member of the team after Rin.

  • Adaptational Wimp: Because the anime cut off before she received her Character Development that allowed her to take a level in badass, she doesn't have as many moments to shine.
  • Adorkable: As a result of being very cute and terribly awkward around people.
  • Ambiguously Bi: Gets flustered around Yukio, but her admiration of Izumo seems to go a bit beyond wanting to be friends. This turns out to just be showing how awkward she is socially speaking.
  • Badass Adorable: Not only is Shiemi a very cute and sweet girl with an equally adorable companion, but they are also the most effective tamer/demon team of the group and the most versatile members period being able to cover healing, defense and offense equally well.
  • Barrier Warrior: In fighting the Naberius during the Page exam, she used Niichan to grow a tree barrier. She also uses a similar thing to protect Ryuji later on.
  • Betty and Veronica: She's the sweet and friendly Betty in a Love Triangle with Tsundere Izumo for Rin. However, she is completely oblivious to this and in fact has no romantic interest in anyone.
  • Big Eater: Is the only one during the camping trip to ask for seconds and spends the day looking around Kyoto mostly eating various things (and even requests only to be able to eat food at the start!).
  • Celibate Heroine: She's not really romantically interested in anyone and flat out says she's "too young" for romance.
  • Character Development: Goes from a Shrinking Violet barely able to go to school without shaking uncontrollably to a Plucky Girl, who, with her powerful familiar, is able to fight with the best of them.
  • Cloud Cuckoo Lander: She tends to nickname plants and even other things (like calling a jacuzzi "pink awa awa") and tends to fall under Comically Missing the Point more than once.
  • Combat Medic: She's the only one in the main group capable of healing and utilizes this skill multiple times. She can also kick some serious ass.
  • Comically Missing the Point: When Izumo laments that she can't believe she's friends with someone like Shiemi, who's "as shameless as a weed", she thinks it's a pep talk and vows to become "as strong as a weed".
  • Cute Clumsy Girl: Early on she tripped multiple times. Since changing away from her kimono for exorcist duties, this has changed.
  • Damsel in Distress: During her first appearance she was possessed and needed saving, at least partially from her own misplaced guilt. This doesn't happen again (barring the incident with Amaimon)
  • Does Not Like Shoes: When we first meet her, she is seen gardening barefoot and getting her feet - and rather elaborate kimono - completely dirty.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: The growth of her hair coincides with her development into a badass Plucky Girl.
  • Extreme Doormat: Acted like this in the beginning because of her belief that doing lots of stuff without expecting thanks is how friends treat friends. She grew out of it.
  • Familiar: Has one named "Nii-chan," a small, cute plant demon. It's really useful.
  • Fangirl: Of Yukio. Heart-eyes and everything. She slowly gets over it though still admires him.
  • Flower in Her Hair: After she grows her hair out of its bob she uses flower based hairclips to keep her bangs out of her face. Considering that Nii-chan spends most of his time hiding in her hair they might count as being a sentient "flower in her hair" as well.
  • Foil: To Izumo since while both are tamers but she is friendly and humble, as oppossed to Izumo's abrasive and proud personality. Even their character designs and hair/eye colors are opposite of each other.
  • Fragile Flower: Probably the most sensitive person in this manga, but she's getting more assertive.
  • Friend to All Living Things: Mostly towards any plants, though demons work too.
  • Girly Girl with a Tomboy Streak: Very girly and sweet, loves flowers, but has no trouble getting dirty and is a Big Eater. Not to mention is the most badass of the group after Rin.
  • Green Eyes: Reflecting her nature motif and powerful spiritual ability.
  • Green Thumb: Why she has a Green Man familiar; plant power!
  • Hair Antennae: That almost make her look like a bug.
  • Hair Decorations: After getting her school uniform she starts wearing little decorative hairclips.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Unlike Ryuji, (the only other Blonde - though dyed - of the main cast) hers is pure gold and pure kindness.
  • Hello, Nurse!: The boys' reaction when she first put on her school uniform. Her kimono hid her figure considerably.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Called herself useless alot when she didn't have her familiar.
  • Hidden Buxom: The guys are utterly gobsmacked when they see her wearing something other than her modest, concealing kimono. It's complete with Gainaxing.
  • Hikikomori: At first, she stayed in her garden all day. This was before Rin reminded her of her interest in seeing more of the world.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Her main motivation is to make friends. To the point Shiemi has no interest in romance.
  • Ill Girl: As a result of Demonic Possession, her legs were weak.
  • Innocent Flower Girl: She's still kind and she still has plenty of knowledge on plants, flowers and the like. She also lives at a herbs/plant shop.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Mainly towards Rin; Shiemi's lack of social skills mixed with Rin's lack of social skills along with her ignorance to his situation and feelings causes this. She's gotten better since the Kyoto arc when she acknowledged her shortcomings there.
  • Lethal Chef: Subverted. The sandwiches she made in Chapter 50 were basically just some herbs between bread and even Yukio couldn't pretend they tasted good, but it's later revealed that these herbs were what kept the group from getting addicted to the Inari food like all the tourists.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: To Yukio. Chapter 44 reveals that being with Shiemi is the only time he feels at peace.
  • Loving a Shadow: Has always believed that Yukio was perfect and has always admired him for it, but after witnessing an argument between him and Rin in chapter 36 she realizes that that's not the case.
  • Love Epiphany: Towards Rin in the manga, though more in regard to realizing that Rin likes her and she might like him back. However, it later turns out to be subverted as she doesn't love anyone romantically.
  • Love You and Everybody: Turns out this is what's going on. Her fluster and blushing comes from how shy and socially awkward she is and she doesn't have any romantic love towards anyone not even Yukio! Instead, she just sees everyone as friends and "Yuki-chan" is special because he's her first friend.
  • Luminescent Blush: In the manga, Shiemi blushes in almost every panel she's in. This is foreshadowing the above trope; someone who reacts to the same amount of fluster to everyone can't be someone who has any romantic feelings towards anyone.
  • Nice Girl: One of the friendliest members of the cast.
  • The Nicknamer: With herbs and other plants. She once failed a test because she didn't use their real names.
  • No Social Skills: In the beginning, shown when she repeatedly fails in trying to get her feelings across to Izumo. She finally suceeds in chapter Chapter 32. It is later revealed her lack of social skills result in her giving the impression of having a crush on Yukio though she claims to not like anyone and thinks she's too young for romance.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: Shiemi often ends up too close for comfort, much to Rin's confusion and Izumo's chagrin.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: Her familiar, Nii-chan, is the cutest plant demon you'll ever see.
  • Obliviously Beautiful: She has no idea why she could have so many male admirers. Or that she even has them.
  • Oblivious to Love: She genuinely doesn't notice all the love triangles that involve her. Justified by the fact she was born very sickly and wasn't allowed to go outside much. Then her grandmother died and she became obsessed with caring for her garden. She's also not interested in romance in the first place.
  • Plucky Girl: As part of her character development. She strives to be as determined "as a weed" and tries not to let anything keep her spirits down for too long.
  • The Pollyanna: Not even the Alpha Bitch can upset her.
  • Shrinking Violet:
    • At first, she was very shy and withdrawn. She grows out of it and even before she did, she shows signs in her debut chapter of being more outgoing than her shyness first allows.
    • Because of her fear of crowds, she'd never been to an amusement park, meaning she was ecstatic when she finally had a chance to go to Mepphyland on a mission to find a troublesome ghost.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: Shown when she completely explodes at Rin and Yukio when they start arguing infront of her. They were both shocked.
  • Squishy Wizard: Without her familiar, she's pretty defenseless.
  • Summon Magic: She's able to summon a baby Green Man with no training, something that surprises everyone.
  • Tareme Eyes: To emphasize her sweet, passive personality.
  • Tender Tears: In her debut chapter over her grandmother. She also tends to tear up easily over sad things (generally involving Rin or Izumo).
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: She's the girly girl to Izumo's tomboy. It's because she's sweeter than Izumo and her tendency to wear kimono.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Later on with Izumo, though the vitriol really only applies to Izumo because Shiemi is endlessly friendly.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Gives something like this to herself when she realizes just how ignorant and selfish she has been, not seeing how others (particularly Rin) are also suffering.
  • Zettai Ryouiki: After getting her school uniform she wears stockings that show a patch of skin between them and her skirt. It's quite the contrast with her kimono.

Cram School Students

     Ryuji "Bon" Suguro
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/blue_exorcist_ryuuji_465.jpg
Voiced by: Kazuya Nakai (Japanese) and Kyle Hebert (English)

Only child and son of the Head Priest of the Myoo Dharani sect, of which got the label of "Cursed Temple" due to being a victim of the Blue Night. Ryuji is trying to acquire the title of Meister in both Aria and Dragoon. Also wants to kill Satan, in this case in the desire to use that to restore the temple he's from. He's a major hot head and struggles often to understand others.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Averted. He is called "Bon" by his closest friends but that's actually a sign of respect and reference to the fact he's the son of the Head Priest of the Myoo Dharani. Other members use "Ryuji-sama".
  • The Apprentice: Becomes one to Lightning in chapter 71, though his friends claim he's more like the man's manager. Ryuji doesn't disagree, but he's sticking it out anyways at a chance of learning useful stuff.
  • Barrier Maiden: During the Kyoto arc he briefly acted as this to keep the Impure King contained. Rin isn't letting him live it down, either.
  • Badass Bookworm: He can memorize an entire book 21 chapters long, and this means he has an arsenal of Fatal Verses.
  • Berserk Button: Ryuji cares a lot more for his friends than he cares to admit and is absolutely pissed whenever any of them places undue strain upon themselves when they have each other to depend upon. In the manga, he doesn't care that Rin is Satan's son, but he's irritated that Rin decided to handle the students' protection on his own. Ryuji is absolutely infuriated when he finds out in Chapter 64 that Shima's brothers willingly allowed Shima to join the Illuminati, even if it is for the sake of being True Cross' double agent.
  • BFG: Later chapters show him packing a Bazooka and a bandolier holding several reloads of rockets. It's justified, as he's also pursuing a Dragoon Meister along with Aria.
  • Blush Sticker: It must be seen to be believed.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: During the Kyoto arc he yells at his father for keeping secrets. For how that went, see Nice Job Breaking It, Hero below.
  • Can't Hold His Liquor: Ryuji passes out drunk after one drink when Shura mixes up the drinks... again.
  • Character Development: Starts going through it during the Kyoto arc, drops it temporarily after, picks it up again during the Inari arc, and the recent arc half focuses on how he's finally starting to grow up properly.
  • A Day in the Limelight: The Impure King Revival Story Arc sends the cram students to Kyoto where they meet Ryuji's family.
  • Delinquent Hair: This plus his Face of a Thug lead to some people (like Rin) to assuming he is a poor student. He ditches it in ch72 as a sign of his growing maturity. Keeps the piercings though.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: Ever since he was young, he defined himself as The Leader, whether it be towards his friends, the Myouda sect, whoever. However, following the Impure King incident and especially The Reveal that Shima is The Mole, he's begun to realize that isn't necessarily true anymore, and is having a lot of trouble dealing with that. Lightning's reveal of how one doesn't need a great goal to become an amazing exorcist seems to be helping as is him taking Ryuji in as his apprentice.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Rin has taken to calling Ryuji "Princess" since the Kyoto arc, due to his Barrier Maiden status in that arc. Ironically it fits for other reasons; he certainly is a "spoiled princess".
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: In chapter 72 he switches to a different hairstyle. He gets rid of the yellow streak, cuts his hair closer, and shortens his bangs. The result is of a mature and sensible look, which fits as he's working towards dealing with his flaws and even shows signs of calming down already.
  • Eye Pop: Didn't seem to take Rin seriously when he said Kuro could change sizes.
  • Fatal Flaw: His temper and tendency to takes things personal are his greatest flaws and tend to cause disasters when they both go hand in hand during a situation (see Nice Job Breaking It, Hero below for details). His lack of Street Smarts is another thing that gives him grief (early on, he was incapable of noticing how odd and super strong Rin was, claiming he had no special abilities despite proof otherwise; it takes Rin drawing Kurikara for him to finally get clued in).
  • Foil: Turns out to be one for Yukio. Both are smart scholarship students who have terrible tempers and are admired by others while not being as good as they seem at first. While Ryuji is currently doing his best to work through his flaws and improve himself Yukio is refusing to admit to be wrong and is heading on a crash course to disaster.
  • Genius Bruiser: Like most aria using exorcists, he can recite the entire Bible from memory while beating on demons.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Has the worst temper of the group and it's his biggest flaw. The calm he shows during certain situations is more of a facade he puts on as his status as The Leader.
  • Hidden Depths: Rin immediately assumes that Ryuji's nothing but an angry brute. Turns out he's very smart, hardworking, and loves cleaning and meditation, not to mention he's an eloquent reciter. He's still an angry brute.
  • Hot-Blooded: Just like Rin, though he is generally calmer, but this can cause conflicts since they can be too similar in this regard. Not to mention cause him to make mistakes at times since his Hot-Bloodness comes from a bad temper.
  • It's All About Me: An interesting variation; Ryuji's tendency to take things personal means he acts as if everything is done against him if it effects him. For example, Rin being the Son of Satan and hiding it from him, and Renzo's choice involving the Illuminati.
  • It's Personal: Against Satan, for wrecking his family's temple and scaring many people away from it, who believed it to be a cursed place. And it's not the only thing he treats personally (see above).
  • Freaky Fashion, Mild Mind: Despite the hair dye, he is at the top of his class.
  • Jerkass Realization: Has this happen three times before it fully sticks. First during his debut chapter when Rin saves his life from the Leaper, second during Kyoto arc when a "fight" with Rin puts him in the position of being executed, and then finally during Inari when Renzo throws it into his face how he's been acting rather spoiled this entire time. After the last time, Ryuji has started seriously working on fixing his problems and has started to truly get a handled on his temper.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: First appearance he came across as a straight up Jerkass but ultimately reveals he does care and means well. At the same time, he's quick to take offence, has a serious It's All About Me problem, and makes many assumptions that aren't true on top of his hot temper. In other words, he works as a deconstruction of the concept; just because he means well does not mean he's not being a jerk.
  • The Leader: He really wants to be a leader and at times fulfills the role. Ultimately though, he isn't ready to play that part and Character Development has him admit to it.
  • Multicolored Hair: His blonde hair is shaped like a mohawk, while both sides of his hair are black.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero:
    • If he hadn't gone after Amaimon with a freaking firework a lot of Rin's problems with the Vatican probably wouldn't have come into play until much later.
    • Takes it even further in the next arc. Him having an argument with his father gives Rin a flashback to his foster father's traumatic death. Rin's blow up there gets him locked up and set for an execution, while he's the only one able to truly take on the Impure King. On top of that, Rin's awakened insecurities due to that incident makes it impossible to draw Kurikara to defeat the Impure King for a long time. If The Power of Friendship hadn't come through, not only would have all the exorcists there died (which includes not only Ryuji himself but his friends and family) Kyoto would have suffered under a terrible demon plague that might have spread to the rest of Japan before the Order could defeat or re-seal the Impure King. Damn.
  • Not So Different: From Rin and it's lampshaded by Konekomaru and Renzo. Though as time goes on, the resemblance slides away (revealing it to be mostly a facade) and they settle into a more Red Oni, Blue Oni situation. Ultimately, he's more like Yukio.
  • Perpetual Frowner: Adding to his intimidating appearance is his never ending scowl.
  • Playing with Fire: In chapter 27, he inherited the red flames of Gouhaen from his father.
  • The Power of Friendship: He is always trying to keep everyone together and working as a team. This is deconstructed at first since pushing people together is not the way to do it.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The blunt red oni to Rin's reserved blue.
  • The Rival: Towards Rin for the right for kicking Satan's ass.
  • Scholarship Student: Because of how expensive his school is, Ryuji had to get this to be able to enter not only the normal classes but be allowed to go to cram school. It's one of the reasons he's so focused on studying.
  • Skunk Stripe: A dyed blond example, since he didn't have it when he was younger. He also gets rid of it in ch72 as a sign of his growth.
  • Smarter Than You Look: He looks like a typical delinquent, but he's actually one of the smartest of the cram school students. Rin is surprized that he gets good scores.
  • Spoiled Brat: Downplayed, but his status as the heir to the Myoo Dharani's position of High Priest resulted in him being coddled compared to his two childhood friends. This results in him being rather sheltered and is partially responsible for his It's All About Me attitude. Character Development has him working through it.
  • Tiger Versus Dragon: A textbook dragon to Rin's tiger.
    • Suguro is rather smart, hardworking, and loves cleaning and meditation, not to mention he's an eloquent reciter, and team work means a lot to him, while Rin is lazy, impulsive, tries to solve everything on his own, and usually with brute force alone.
    • At the same time, it's Ryuji who has the Hair-Trigger Temper and his tendency to just use book smarts to solve problems isn't a good thing.

A stubborn, haughty girl with twintails who initially mocked Shiemi. Instant Expert at calling up Familiars, rather skilled in combat. She's a Jerk with a Heart of Gold and is a top student in both normal school and cram school.
  • A-Cup Angst: In Chapter 68 she gets irritated at the sight of a naked Shura and Shiemi being more stacked than her, forcing her to admit that she's wearing a push-up bra.
  • Abusive Parents: Chapter 52 gives us a glimpse into Izumo's past and introduces us to her mother; a woman who originally loved her children but her depression after her lover told her to (essentially) chose between him and her children caused her to be possessed by the Ninetails Fox, resulted in her trying to kill her own children. She also shirked all responsibility for her younger daughter onto Izumo as well due to her Woman Child self.
  • Ambiguously Bi: The ones Izumo gets the most flustered by are Rin and Shiemi. That's without bringing in her relationship to Paku.
  • Armor-Piercing Slap: To Renzou, when she finds out he's helping the Illuminati of his own free will. She then tries to follow it up with a Reason Why You Suck Speech, but one sentence from Renzou knocks the fight out of her.
  • Badass Adorable: She can summon two familiars to fight for her (who can in turn summon a tiny, adorable army) and has her cute moments.
  • Betty and Veronica: The Tsundere Veronica to Girl Next Door Shiemi's Betty for Rin's Archie.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: Pointed out by Rin who nicknames her "Eyebrows" against her will.
  • Big Sister Instinct:
    • Izumo cares greatly for her little sister. She vowed to protect her and is willing to give up her body and be possessed by the Nine-Tails, just so the Illuminati won't do the same to her Tsukumo instead.
    • It's exploited. Not only do the Illuminati manipulate her with that, Mephisto does as well; all while Tsukumo is perfectly safe the entire time.
  • Brainy Brunette: She's at the top of her class.
  • Break the Haughty: In her first focus chapter/episode, she losses her nerve and it almost leads to her familiars turning against her. And it goes straight into Break the Cutie territory during the Inari arc.
  • Complaining About Rescues They Don't Like: Does this constantly. Even in Inari with her possessed and most likely going to die she complains. She only didn't do it once, when Rin rescued her from her Byakko, due to her first Cry Cute moment below.
  • Cry Cute: Something harrowing has to occur to break her haughty facade and leave her a tearful wreck:
    • In Chapter 5/Episode 7, she cannot help but weep in shame after not only was she called out by Paku for how she'd been treating Shiemi, but was also completely useless in fighting against the attacking ghoul and protecting her friend as well.
    • Then she completely falls apart at the end of the Inari arc, when not only does her mother die protecting her, but when she visits Tsukumo after five years the latter cannot even remember her..
  • Cuteness Proximity: Towards Kuro or Dog!Mephisto she loses the haughtiness because of the cuteness.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: It's hinted that something happened to her family. Then we see it later on, and it was really tragic.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Following the True Cross Academy Fesival Story Arc, Izumo gets a lengthy arc centered around her dealing with her Dark and Troubled Past as a possible container for the Nine-Tailed Fox.
  • Deadpan Snarker: More than willing to let vitriol loose on people, especially Ryuji.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: She didn't really want to make friends aside from Paku, but she is learning to get along better with the rest of the team.
  • Distress Ball: Has caught this four times so far: First during the exwire exam (getting rescued by Rin), second during the Impure King Arc (getting rescued by Shiemi), third during the festival (getting rescued by Renzo), and finally the Inari Arc is all about rescuing her from the Illuminati. That's right, the snarky Tsundere Ice Queen is the resident Damsel in Distress.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: Upon seeing Shiemi about to shed tears for her after hearing the rest of her tragic family life, Izumo lashes out at her, who grew in relative comfort, for trying to sympathize to her situation. Turns out she was crying in relief because Izumo was finally being open to her feelings to her friends.
  • Familiars: Has a pair of very powerful foxes who almost killed her when they saw she wasn't as strong as she seemed. They are later "killed" by Shima when she tries to escape the Illuminati compound and then come back when she begs them for strength after her mother dies. However, turns out Shima just weakened them enough to make it so they were out of the way for a time...
  • Foil: To Shiemi since while both are tamers she is outgoing and assertive, as oppossed to Shiemi's shy and passive personality. Even their character designs and hair/eye colors are opposite of each other.
  • Friendless Background: Happened due to being the only one who could see demons. Possibly also due to her fear of one day having to give herself up to the Illuminati.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Going with her Tsundere personality, she has the associated long pigtails. It's another contrast with Shiemi, her foil.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: She's a downplayed case. She has demonic blood, but it's been diluted over the course of so many generations that she's basically human.
  • Heroic Bastard: Is the daughter of the head of the Inami family and the Kamiki priestess of Inari, who was his mistress. Most certainly were not married even years later when they went on to have her little sister Tsukumo.
  • Hime Cut: She has long hair in tails and bangs that are as straight and even as a ruler. She also claims to have a relation to a miko. Which is true; her family was always Miko tasked with keeping the Ninetails under control until her mother snapped.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: While rather rude and blunt to those around her, she's also a genuinely good girl. She encouraged Shiemi (in her own way) when the latter has given up and is the first to defend Rin (and for a while, the only one to stand by his side) when it's revealed that he's the son of Satan and all his other friends are uneasy around him. She's also, as part of her development, slowly scratching the "jerk" part off.
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: She shows a nice side to cats, when no one's around of course. She seems to be fond of dogs, as well.
  • Lovable Alpha Bitch: She's aloof and cold, but on the inside, she's a Jerk with a Heart of Gold.
  • Miko: She becomes one in order to perform an exorcism.
  • Parental Abandonment: Her mother went from being loving but self-centered to outright abandoning her and her sister because her lover didn't want to deal with her kids. This caused her to snap and get possessed by the demon she was supposed to keep sealed.
  • Perpetual Frowner: When she isn't actively being smug, she's frowning.
  • The Power of Love: Heavily hinted that the reason the Ninetails is no longer compatible with her is because she loves her friends and family.
  • Pride: Her biggest flaw, along with her trust issues. The Inari arc shows just how big a flaw it is when it causes Mike & Uke to die and Izumo to willing do something that will probably kill her.
  • Promotion to Parent: She had to take care of her sister when her mother completely abandoned them. Even before that, she was the one mostly responsible for Tsukumo.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Not evil, just prideful.
  • Shaggy Dog Story: The entire Inari arc. We find out that she's been living her life to defend and protect her younger sister Tsukumo, and is only being kept alive for her possible compatibility with the Nine-Tailed Fox inside her mother. It turns out she's not as compatible as everyone thought, and allowing the spirit inside her body may kill her, but she decides to go through with it to keep the Illuminati from going after Tsukumo in her place. Sure enough, Izumo is almost killed in the process, which leads to her mother taking the Fox into her own body again to keep it from killing Izumo and allowing their family's power to die with her, but not before telling Izumo that she always loved her. The Cram School students save Izumo, but her efforts were ultimately in vain, because Tsukumo was under the protection of True Cross all along, and when Izumo finally goes to visit Tsukumo, the latter doesn't even remember who she is (justified, since she was three the last they were together). So for all the trouble Izumo went through, she gained absolutely nothing she was fighting for, has no access to the power she should have been able to inherit and loses what few family ties she thought she had left, leaving her unable to do anything but cry over the unfairness of it all to Shiemi.
  • Summon Magic: Her foxes spirit familiars come when she calls them.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: Very aggressive, rude, and short tempered, as well as not afraid to get violent despite only being a Tamer. She also loves shopping and has a secret thing for cute animals like cats and dogs.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: A down played Tomboy to Shiemi's Girly Girl. Not that she's unfeminine, but her rough personality is a stark contrast to Shiemi's gentleness.
  • Tsundere: Type A, right down to the twintails and thighhigh socks. As part of her character development, her deredere side comes out more and more often; Generally towards Paku, Shiemi and Rin. She is also a deconstruction of the trope like Taiga. As the above tropes prove, Izumo is not prickly for no reason.
  • Tsurime Eyes: Going with her aggressive and proud personality.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: On both receiving and giving ends. Paku gives her one early on for her treatment of Shiemi, and she gives a very mocking one to the other Exwires about their treatment of Rin during her conversation with him on the train to Kyoto.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: In the anime and some colored manga pages, she has purple hair.
  • Zettai Ryouiki: Thigh-length stockings, Tsundere attitude and pigtails; Grade S!

     Renzou Shima
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/blue_exorcist_renzou_9339.jpg
Voiced by: Koji Yusa (Japanese) and Brian Beacock (English)

One of Ryuji's childhood friends from Kyoto. A slightly perverted Buddhist priest with pink hair and entomophobia. The fifth son of his family. As all the spoiler text below suggests, he's much more than he seems.
  • Blade on a Stick: Can use Yamantaka's black flames to change his khakkhara into a spear that burns the souls of anything it cuts.
  • Break Them by Talking:
    • To Izumo, when she's chewing him out for betraying them. Particularly notable since he manages to take the wind from Izumo's sails with only three sentences.
"You got mad? That was unexpected. Afterall, we're the same, you and I."
    • Chapter 67 has him doing this to Yukio, reducing him to a break down after he's gone with only a few well chosen words.
    • Chapter 80 has him continuing the above to Yukio, revealing he's the one who told Mephisto about his suicidal training and instead of that gambit he pulled with Hachiro, he should just join Illuminati.
  • Butt Monkey: Is one, but generally for comic relief. Gets his ribs broken after laughing at Amaimon, being told to walk through a bug swamp despite being incredibly phobic, etc. After being revealed as a Illuminati double-spy with a powerful Wisdom King familiar, the Exwires comically sweep him with a broom / summon familiars / burn his clothes off in pay back.
  • The Chosen One: In regards to the Shima family, he's the one who's been blessed with Yamantaka and his black flames. Mephisto outright calls him such in fact.
  • Chivalrous Pervert: Takes every opportunity he can to flirt with a woman.
  • Cowardly Lion: His childhood friend Konekomaru was always afraid Renzou would abandon them. However, in the Kyoto arc he came back to save Konekomaru.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass:
    • When called to deliver Izumo to the Illuminati, he summons a high-level Wisdom King demon that has apparently been his Familiar since childhood. Later he uses the same flame-based techniques that his older brothers in the Shima clan showed in the Kyoto arc.
    • He appeared to have annihilated Izumo's fox familiars within seconds. It turned out he's a Reverse Mole and Double Agent hired by Mephisto and has been faking BOTH sides as part of his cover, and he volunteered.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: He said he chose the Aria meister because Ryuji and Konekomaru were pursuing Aria Meisters, despite how the Knight class suits him better with his khakkara. Konekomaru calls him out on this. After his affiliations with the Illuminati and Mephisto were revealed, it looks like he found it working as a double spy.
  • Dissonant Serenity: Despite his reveal as a Mole, he maintained his easygoing, laidback attitude, but with that same tone he flat out tells Izumo that he hates everything, and is very comfortable with telling Lucifer that Rin's weakness is his capacity to love humans. He seems okay with sending Izumo to her Fate Worse Than Death, and before that, apologizes to his friends and says goodbye to them as if he didn't just kidnap Izumo. Considering his status as a Double Agent, he probably deliberately invoked it.
  • Double Reverse Quadruple Agent: He's the Shima clan's and Mephisto's spy in the Illuminati, who have him enrolled in Cram School to spy on the True Cross Order and Izumo in particular. He also may have some genuine loyalty to his classmates, as demonstrated by him going out of his way to spare Izumo's familiars, but at the same time, the Illuminati knows this and sent him to back to spy for them in the True Cross Order, which he seems to do. So really, it's anyone's guess.
  • Fake Defector: Revealed to be a Reverse Mole working for the exorcists. He asked for the job.
  • Familiar: Can summon Yamantaka, a very high-level demon made of black flames. According to Shima, he's been able to call him up since he was a child.
  • The Gadfly: Renzo shows at times a fondness for teasing and poking people, just so he can laugh.
  • Genre Savvy:
    • Renzou suggests that the Illuminati guards have a better chance of defeating Rin than Lucifer as Rin would hesitate to kill humans, saying "love is fragile".
    • When Yukio demands to know what side he's on, Renzou flips it back on Yukio with "you know the same could be said to you". This is after Renzou had relayed Lucifer's (second) invitation to join the Illuminati. Yukio doesn't take this well.
  • It Amused Me: His entire reason for being a spy boils down to it being fun. Considering he's been merely following family tradition and showed more than once to be unhappy with his chosen role, picking something personally just for "fun" is justified.
  • In Love with the Mark: Downplayed, but Renzo is genuinely attracted to Izumo and might have more than a crush on her. The bonus chapter Kin-nii's Band Has Zero Popularity certainly seems to be a strong hint towards that.
  • Ladykiller in Love: Same as the above, he does genuinely have at least a big crush on Izumo despite claiming to love all women.
  • Last Name Basis: Even his childhood friends Konekomaru and Ryuji only call him by his last name. When Ryuji does call him by his first name, it's during a very serious moment.
  • Let's Get Dangerous: His response to Izumo being threatened by Takara is to stop holding back and go all out; but it's all an act...
  • Lovable Coward: Contemplates running away most of the time. But he still ultimately pulls through.
  • Nun Too Holy: Despite being raised in a temple and training to be a monk and exorcist it doesn't seen to stop him from trying to flirt with every girl he meets, especially around Izumo. Lampshaded by Konekomaru...
  • Playing with Fire: He can summon a creature which uses black flames to burn demons and human souls.
  • Power Strain Blackout: He can summon Yamantaka, but it's a strain and using too much can knock him out for hours.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: To match his outgoing, positive, flirty and friendly persona, much to his father's chagrin...
  • Say It with Hearts: When speaking to freaking Lucifer! While giving him a double peace sign and goofy grin.
  • Shaping Your Attacks: He has used his black flames to form a spear tip, a buzzsaw-like wave and even paper-thin spikes of fire that erupt from the ground.
  • Simple Staff: His weapon of choice, leading Konekomaru to think he would make a good knight meister. He does.
  • Stepford Smiler: Has a happy, cheery demeanor but has expressed issues. In the Kyoto arc he briefly abandoned Koneko to the Impure King because he was fed up with "blood obligation", but ran back to save him. While talking to Izumo and being recorded by Illuminati cameras, he said that he hates everything, except the ladies. How much that is true is unknown, but Renzo certainly doesn't fit with the usual mould for the Shima family and Myoo Dhra as well. Not to mention appears to on some level despise his deceased elder brother Takezo.
  • Super Strength: From Word of God, summoning Yamantaka increases Renzou's physical strength, allowing Renzou to send Rin flying with a single swipe of his khakkhara.
  • Theme Naming: His older siblings are named Kinzou (not that one) and Juuzou (not that one, either). Later on we find out his father Yaozou and his late eldest brother Takezou fall under this as well. The middle sibling is also named Gozo, and it fully seems to be something all the guys in his family get.
  • The Unfavorite: Gets berated for his pink hair, kicked by one brother and then hit again before he leaves, is told constantly to watch over Ryuji, his mother threatens him...It's generally Played for Laughs.
  • Walking Spoiler:
    • It's impossible to talk about him without bringing up the fact he's a Double Agent and previously was The Mole.
  • Wham Line: Usually from when he does Break Them by Talking.
    • "Okumura, a piece of advice. From now on, you'll need to be prepared to kill humans if you want to win."
    • "You got mad? That was unexpected. Afterall, we're the same, you and I."
    • "And it's because I'm an ally, I could you give that advice. You know, the same could be said to you. Shouldn't you consult someone about this matter?
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: His entomophobia is a recurring personal problem, especially against insect based demons which causes him to either freeze up or enter a blind "flight or fight" frenzy (as seen during the camping trip). If you see him willingly touch an insect (like the moth in the movie) you know something's wrong.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: Pink in his case as well as a dyed version.

     Konekomaru Miwa

Voiced by: Yuuki Kaji (Japanese) and Mona Marshall (English)

The other of the Kyoto trio. He's a short priest with a shaved head and a timid nature. Good at reciting scripture, though not nearly at the level that Ryuji can. He's also the smartest of the team, though it takes time for him to really start speaking his mind and applying his brains properly.
  • Animal Motifs: Cats. His name, his design, his likes, and his dislikes all go along with this.
  • Awesome McCool Name: At least in Rin's opinion
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: His judgment is based mostly on observation, allowing him to suggest prudent actions that turn situations around. It's best displayed in his awesome "The Reason You Suck" Speech towards all the other Exwires, where he reveals just how observant he is.
  • Determinator: Definitely the physically weakest of the main Exwires, but the guy refuses to give up, especially when people he cares about are in danger.
  • Driven to Suicide: Nearly, when he thought he was going to be eaten by the chimera zombies. He got better.
  • Happily Adopted: By his best friend's family no less.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Initially the guy basically thought he was useless, but he's been steadily increasing his confidence since what happened with the family portrait.
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: He even carries a cat toy with him in case he sees any strays or Kuro.
  • Nerd Glasses: To make him look more catlike.
  • Nice Guy: Polite and kind to everyone. Suguro points out that he has a habit of keeping his emotions buried to avoid hurting other people's feelings.
  • Parental Abandonment: His parents both died on the Blue Night.
  • Theme Naming: Let's see, loves cats, drinks hot milk every day, hates being cold. His first name almost literally translates to 'Circle of Kittens'.
  • The Generic Guy: Compared to everyone else, Konekomaru is very ordinary. If his classmates weren't who they were (which includes the Son of Satan) he would have ended up as just another exorcist. As is, he's taking levels of badass in response to his surroundings.
  • The Short Guy with Glasses: One of the shortest males in the cast and the one with glasses. He's also one of the most book-smart characters seen and the main Mr. Exposition.
  • The Smart Guy: His main role on the team is using his smarts. That's why he's Mr. Exposition.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: Smart and short people definitely do. He's got a lot of knowledge.
  • Shrinking Violet: In how he tends to keep his feelings bottled up.
  • The Strategist: He becomes and tells his teammates how to better ulitize their skills for greater tactics.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: He makes everyone realize their faults in order to improve on them to better their teamwork.
  • Took a Level in Badass: After the incident above, he starts making strides in being awesome.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Briefly, after discovering Rin was the son of Satan. It wasn't so much that he became a jerk though, as being straight-up terrified of Rin, to the point where he thought it was dangerous to be around him. He gets better though, following a pretty sweet moment with Rin

     Nemu Takara
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/blue_exorcist_nemu_9973.jpg
Voiced by: Tsubasa Yonaga (Japanese) and Brianne Siddall (English)

One of the cram school students. He doesn't talk, instead uses a Bunny Rabbit puppet to communicate rudely to the others.
  • Deep Sleep: Since his puppet said "Nemu go back to sleep" immediately after Takara opened his eyes during the fight with Shima that may mean that he has been sleeping through every cram class, conversation, and event he has been present for so far.
  • Demonic Dummy: The puppet is actually serving as the host of the demon who is controling Takara.
  • Don't Wake the Sleeper: At least his hand puppet seems to think so, since even briefly waking up caused it to tell Takara to go back to sleep.
  • Expy: He is Older Than He Looks, is often involved with toys, and is an Insufferable Genius. Basically, he's Near if he traded being a detective for being an exorcist.
  • Eyes Always Shut: Adding to his unusual and mysterious appearance. Justified since he doesn't need to see since he is asleep while his demon possessed puppet controls him.
  • Jerkass: When he does talk he is very rude. Or at least his demon is.
  • Hand Puppet: His Pink Rabbit that he uses to talk.
  • Last Name Basis: No one ever uses his first name since they don't know him well enough.
  • Marionette Master: An unusual variety of Tamer, able to summon and control dolls. At least, that's what the demon controlling him claims he is.
  • Meaningful Name: The name Nemu can mean "Sleep" and if his puppet is to be believed then in every scene of him so far Takara has been asleep, possibly so his demon can control him better.
  • Red Herring: Incredibly suspicious kid older than the other cram students and possible more powerful than he should be? Gotta be The Mole... except he isn't. Though that doesn't mean he's in the clear, as now the audience must wonder what a "Coordinator" means here.
  • Sleepwalking: In a matter of speaking, since his demon has been controlling Takara's body while he's asleep.
  • The Quiet One: He rarely speaks but when he does it is only through his puppet.
  • Ventriloquism: Communicates using a rabbit puppet.
  • Walking Spoiler: At this point, talking about him reveals a good chunk of the plot.

True Cross Academy Staff

     Mephisto Pheles / Samael
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/blue_exorcist_mephisto_8941.jpg
Voiced by: Hiroshi Kamiya (Japanese) and Sam Riegel (English)

Chairman of the True Cross Academy who, after Fujimoto died, was ordered to kill Rin. However, he accepted Rin's proposal in becoming an Exorcist and entered him into True Cross Academy. Can turn into a dog.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: Of eye color variety. He has blue eyes in the manga and green eyes in the anime.
  • Agent Peacock: Has flamboyant tastes and can effortlessly restrain Rin and Amaimon.
  • Anti Anti Christ: He's a demon, one of Satan's kin, who's convinced that "peace is the disorder in which people can coexist", loves the human world, and only wants to protect it in a way any sane human can consider reasonable.
  • Authority Equals Asskicking: He's 3rd highest ranking of all demon in terms of strength and one of the Eight Demon Kings. He's right below Lucifer in terms of strength in the Gehenna Hierarchy. He is also an Honorary Knight which, in exorcist rankings, is two ranks below Paladin. It's possible he'd be higher too, were it not for his heritage.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: He's pretty friendly and personable most of the time. Even if he comes off as creepy, he rarely ever says a harsh word to anyone and is always very polite. Furthermore, he's an Otaku who loves to dress in hilariously flamboyant fashions while also going on Large Ham speeches about various things and making a spectacle of himself. His room is filled with plushies and fandom merchandise. He's the third most powerful demon in the Gehenna hierarchy - after Satan and Lucifer. And he is also Samael, master of time and space, able to restrain Amaimon and Rin at the same time if he has to, without breaking a sweat. His rage has only come close to being triggered once and it was by Shura, who tried to interrogate him. She immediately knew to back off.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Very Camp and a large ham but a high ranking exorcist, dean of a prestigious school the size of a city, and one of the strongest demon kings of Gehenna.
  • Camp Straight: Definitely camp (especially in the anime) and most likely straight as he's commented in the manga that he shares Rin's preference for women of the "devilish" type. He also has some Ship Tease with Shura in the manga.
  • The Chessmaster: It's a blend of all three tropes. Depending on who he's really working for (other than himself), Mephisto is shaping up to be one or more of these. Pity the guys on the other side. He openly admits that he sees them as chess pieces and was behind most of their trials.
  • Demon Lords and Archdevils: As it turned out he's Samael the King of Time and Space, third most powerful among the demons in hell.
  • Devil in Plain Sight: While he certainly is a son of Satan, he was also close friends with Fujimoto and is one of the good guys right now. Technically, at least. See For the Lulz below. Turns out all the exorcists know who he really is, except Rin.
  • Eccentric Mentor: If Mephisto really is on the side of the Exorcists, then he is this. Older than most of other characters? Check. Knows more than he lets on most of the time? Check. Usually acts like comic relief? Check. Eccentric? Double check. Cares not for what others may think? Considering his fashion sense, check. Acts like a mentor/protector/guide? Check, to his students and school. More powerful than he shows? Considering he was able to drag a berserker Rin around while calmly sheathing his sword and pleasantly talking to someone, that would be a checknote . Seems to prefer letting his students solve problems by themselves? Mostly check, with him making a few nudges here and there. He seems to fit this trope very well but then, if he's not on the side he claims to be on, he may be a subversion.
  • Familiar: Has two different ones so far. One is Ukobach, a demon who, as shown in the anime, cooks food for Rin and Yukio. The other is disguised as his umbrella most of the time.
  • For the Lulz: His reason for being the leader of the side that wants to take down his dad is because he's bored and because humans are entertaining.
  • Gratuitous German: While it is the correct usage, he gratuitously uses "eins, zwei, drei" occasionally, which simply means "one, two, three". He has also used two spells called "Kuchen Cuckoo House" (kuchen being the German word for "cake", used in other languages to describe various other sweets) and "Das Stärkste Gefängnis", meaning "the Strongest Prison". This is possibly justified in that his namesake originates from German folklore.
  • Hellish Pupils: To make him seem untrustworthy and show that he's a demon.
  • Idiot Hair: As seen here. It's hidden under the hat.
  • I Have Many Names: He's also known as Loki, Watari Garasu, Raven, and Trickster.
  • Immortality Begins at 20: Despite being used for (at least) two hundred years, his human host still looks to be in his thirties.
  • The Insomniac: The tankobon claims he has one hour of sleep a night.
  • Intrigued by Humanity: Specifically the Japanese. He's a bonafide otaku.
  • It Amused Me: Pretty much his modus operandi for doing anything, including living in the human world to start with.
  • Large Ham: Loud clothes, loud voice, and has an entire amusement park named after him.
  • Lethal Chef: He used his cooking to threaten/encourage Rin and Yukio to make up with Ukobach.
  • Meaningful Name: Named after the demon in the archetypal Deal with the Devil German tale of Faust.
  • Mood-Swinger: Goes from silly and casual to deadly serious and back again.
  • Morphic Resonance: No matter what he turns into he keeps his primarily white color scheme and has a pink polka dotted scarf around his neck. His bug form even has a mini version of his human form's top hat.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: The original Samael is variably speculated to be an Angel, a Demon, The Grim Reaper, Satan, or The Demiurge; his only constant trait is his capacity for both good and evil. That's right, even the other character he's based on is a huge enigma.
  • Nice Hat: A distinctive top hat he keeps when he turns into a bug.
  • Otaku: According to the character profiles in the tankobon, he enjoys movies, manga, anime, video games, music, toys, and subcultures. He admits it in chapter 39, and seems to be outright proud of it.
  • Public Domain Character: In the anime continuity, at least, where it's made explicit that he is the very same Mephistopheles who contracted with Faust in the original folktale. In the manga, this remains to be seen.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Has been working with the exorcists for 200 years and is older than Amaimon who is over 1000 years old.
  • Reality Warper: Amongst others, he was shown to be able to transform into a dog, pull a clock out of his hat (in which he was able to hide/entrap Amaimon), transport Rin's and his own conscious to Gehenna, and he also made the Exorcist shop inaccessable by physical means. As it turned out, he's the King of Time and Space.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: When he isn't wearing his silliest outfit (the one with the tights and the puffy pants,) he's this and has worn both a simple white suit and a striped, but still snazzy, one. It seems to depend on his mood and the occasion.
  • Smart People Play Chess: All There in the Manual, and somewhat implied in-universe, that he's good at chess. he's very smart indeed.
  • Space Master: As the Demon King of Time and Space, he has this ability. It only came up a few times so far, like when he trapped Ammaimon in his hat, or when he transported Rin's and his own soul to Gehenna.
  • Stealth Pun: His animal forms seem based on these: He turns into a dog in order to seem more like "Man's best friend" and he turns into a literal version of an Incredibly Obvious Bug to try and spy on his students For the Lulz.
  • Tareme Eyes: Like his brother, Amaimon, it's an unusual case of an ambiguously-aligned, adult man having them.
  • Time Master: He is the demon lord of time, thus giving him this ability and more.
  • Time Stands Still: One of his powers he can use. It is seen used to stop the slowly expanding artificially created Gehenna Gate. Unfortunately this will last four to five months at best.
  • Trickster Mentor: He teaches Rin, even though his methods are somewhat harsh, he can be straight forward when he feels like it.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: He can turn into things like a dog and a bug to help him go around more freely and to spy on people respectively.

     Shura Kirigakure
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/blue_exorcist_shura_9446.jpg
Voiced by: Rina Sato (Japanese) and Wendee Lee (English)

27-year-old Upper First Class Exorcist swordsman. Prefers wearing clothing that does little to hide her incredibly curvy figure. Has long red hair and acts a bit childish. Also an instructor.
  • Action Girl: The only female that fights in person instead of relying on her familiars.
  • Ancestral Weapon: Her demon sword. It was passed down from mother to child through the ages by Hachiro.
  • Barbie Doll Anatomy: Averted in chapter 68 and zig-zagged in chapter 78. In chapter 68, the lower half of one of her nipples is visible under her towel. In chapter 78, no nipple is visible when Shura gives Shiro a Marshmallow Hell, but a few pages later a panel showing her topless from the side shows the slight outline of a nipple.
  • Big Sister Instinct: When she gave her report to Mephisto after the incident in Aomori she loses her cool when she yells about what happened to Yukio and Rin and demands to know if it was all part of Mephisto's plan. When he doesn't give her an answer she throws her sword at him, leaving a slice at his cheek. And she looks enraged.
Shura: Honestly, I don't care about what happens to the Order or the world! But if anything happens to them... next time I'll impale your face.
  • Boobs of Steel: In addition to being an effective fighter she also has the largest chest of the female cast.
  • Book Dumb: While nowhere near as much as Rin, she does show some shades of this, shown when neither her nor Rin could read a cursive written letter.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: She avoided promotions to be near Fujimoto, who she also considered as her father; however she really is that lazy and that gifted, which infuriates Yukio to no end.
  • Brought Down to Badass: After being freed of Hachiro, she has lost the power she gained from the contract and her Demon Sword became just a normal blade... but she is still quite capable of throwing said blade right through somebody's head if need be.
  • Christmas Cake: She introduces herself to her class as eighteen and constantly interrupts Yukio whenever he tries to tell everyone that she's really twenty-seven years old. Takes a dark turn when it turns out she's bound to die at thirty years due to a demonic pact her ancestress made with a powerful immortal demon.
  • Cool Sword: Her Demon Sword. She inherited it from her ancestor who made a pact with a demon to get the sword in exchange for cursing her decendants with a short lifespan.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Red-violet eyes to go with her fiery red hair.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Heavily implied in the one flashback of her past we see. She claims that Shiro "saved her" in fact. Turns out she's doomed to die at thirty, when little killed a lot of people in ignorance, and before she met Shiro she didn't have a name of her own other than her surname. Oh and she's supposed to give birth to a child before she dies as per the contract with the immortal demon Hachiro her ancestor made.
  • A Day in the Limelight: The Aomori Story Arc has the Okumura brothers sent on a mission to help Shura deal with Hachiro, a demon that has a major connection to her past.
  • Driven to Suicide: Shura attempts to kill herself twice in Chapter 77 to resolve things. Yukio and Hachiro stop her the first and second time respectively.
  • Fiery Redhead: Feisty and aggressive.
  • Gainaxing: To show off her chest. That bra is small.
  • Gamer Chick: While pretending to be a student she was rarely seen NOT playing one of her video games.
  • Hard-Drinking Party Girl: She even drinks on the job, if presented with the opportunity.
  • Healing Factor: Shura heals rather fast for a human. This is because of her ancestor's contract and when she's close to the demon Hachiro, she heals even quicker.
  • Hidden Buxom: While as Yamada she somehow managed to suppress her impressive breasts.
  • Hidden Depths: Her childish antics and tendency for getting drunk hides an incredible exorcist and an extremely sharp woman. She's one of the few people to make Mephisto take something serious.
  • Identical Grandson: She looks just like her ancestor Tatsuko because all of Tatsuko's decendants are cursed to look just like her
  • Ignore the Fan Service: In the Toplessness from the Back shot neither Yukio or Rin are concerned about her state of dress.
  • Important Haircut: At the end of the Aomori arc, she cuts her hair freeing herself from Hachiro - both literally and figuratively.
  • The Lad-ette: Rude, childish, aggressive, and a hard drinker.
  • Mandatory Motherhood: Shura's ancestor Tatsuko made a pact with the demon Hachiro to give Tatsuko and her decendants power in exchange for dying when they turn 30 the pact also requires that Tatsuko's decendants give birth to a child before they die so that the pact will continue. Shura refused to have a child but Hachiro is trying to force the issue by taking advantage of Yukio's presence.
  • Meaningful Name: Shura means "bloodshed" or "carnage", kiri means "mist" and gakure means "to hide/be hidden". So her name is basically "Carnage Hidden by the Mist". Gets a bit lame when it turns out Shiro just named her that because she was considered an Ashura by those who reported her as a demon when he went to deal with the "Baba Yaga" case of her hometown.
  • Ms. Fanservice: The most obvious case of fanservice in this show.
  • Mundane Utility: In the OVA she uses her Hammerspace tattoo to get a beer.
  • Near-Rape Experience: Hachiro forces Shura through Mind Manipulation into making a baby with Yukio, but thankfully Rin intervened.
  • Ninja: Let's see: Japanese themes, emphasis on stealth, only uses weapons which she can easily conceal. Her ancestor Tatsuko was a member of the Iga ninja clan who later started her own.
  • One of the Kids: One of the childish exorcists seen which helps her get along well with her students.
  • Precision F-Strike: Multiple times in Episode 24, but the last one stands out the most.
Yukio (possessed): Is that all you've got!?
Shura: Well, I've got this for you!
  • Precocious Crush: Towards Shiro when she was a child. There are hints she still held something of a crush on him even into the present.
  • Raised by Orcs: She was raised by the demon Hachirotaro until Shiro "rescued" her.
  • Rapunzel Hair: Her hair is pretty long and in fact is the exact same, except for colour, as her ancestress Tatsuko, as part of the false Reincarnation Romance Hachiro is invoking.
  • Razor Wind: Her Serpent Fang attack launches multiple wind blades from her sword.
  • Really Gets Around: Implied to be this way when she was in her teens/early 20s. During a flashback in chapter 78, Shiro says he heard that she's been throwing herself at a lot of men and that she needs to respect herself more. Her response is to take her top off and shove her bare breasts in his face.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: They're matched with a violent streak.
  • Samus Is a Girl: She pretended to be a boy before she had to step in and rescue Rin.
  • Sexy Mentor: To Rin, lectures on controlling his flames while not wearing a top. Not that he notices.
  • Ship Tease: Increasingly shows some with Yukio of all people.
  • Speech-Bubble Censoring: Used in chapter 78 to cover her nipples in some panels where she's topless except for one panel that shows her from the side, with a slight outline of nipple visible.
  • Stripperific: She wears a very revealing bikini top, along with tiny shorts.
  • Tomboyish Ponytail: The most tomboyish female thus far is the one with the ponytail.
  • Toplessness from the Back: Here. Along with Yukio.note .
  • Victoria's Secret Compartment: Not quite, she keeps her sword in a magical tattoo located just above her bosom, but it still calls this trope to mind. She can do the same thing with the one on her stomach. Said tattoos are the engraved mark of the contract her ancestor made, making it extremely difficult to cancel or even alter the contract.
  • Walking Swimsuit Scene: Her standard outfit almost resembles this at times, with the very small "bra" she has on top. Not much difference from the top from the actual bikini she wears once.
  • Who Wears Short Shorts?: Her usual outfit includes tiny shorts.
  • Your Days Are Numbered: Her family is cursed to die when they turn 30 because of a pact her ancestor made with a demon
  • Zettai Ryouiki: Her thigh high socks are, ironically, the most concealing thing she wears.

     Igor Neuhaus

Voiced by: Ryotaro Okiayu (Japanese) and Patrick Seitz (English)

A survivor of the blue night who acts as the students first tamer teacher.
  • The Bus Came Back: In the Anime Only, though he then quickly disappears once again.
  • Crusading Widower: After his wife was killed by Satan he has been trying to avenge her.
  • Happily Married: At least he was.
  • Heel Realization: When Rin begs him to not involve innocents, he realizes his quest for revenge was wrong.
  • Improbable Weapon User: Wields what may first appear to be a standard BFS is actually a giant compass, to make summoning circles.
  • Necromancer: His field of expertise is Zombies and Ghouls, with it being mentioned he's the leading expert.
  • Put on a Bus: Disappears after his Day in the Limelight.
  • Summon Magic: He's a Tamer, with contracts to Ghouls and Naberius.
  • Survivor's Guilt: A combination of this and knowing that while possessed by Satan on the blue night he killed his family is the reason for his desire for revenge on Satan and those related to him.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: His quickly introduced, tries to kill Rin, then just as quickly disappears. Averted in the anime, where he briefly comes back.
    • It's mentioned in the manga chapter 69 that he's gone missing without a trace, making it a plot point.

     Kaoru Tsubaki
Voiced by: Kazuhiro Oguro (Japanese)

A weird teacher who will abandon his students in the middle of class because he recived a phone call from his, apparent, girlfriend.

  • Gonk: While more subtle than most his design (especially his face) can appear rather odd when compared to the rest of the cast.
  • Sickening Sweethearts: Assumedly with the women who called him, since it sounded like he was calling her "Kitty" as a petname.
  • Taking the Bullet: In the Anime Only, he blocks and takes an attack from Satan to protect his students. He survives.

True Cross Academy Students

     Reiji Shiratori
Voiced by: Kentaro Ito (JP), Derek Stephen Prince (EN)

A Bully who Rin fights with and is later possessed by a demon.
  • Adaptation Expansion: In the manga, both he and the demon that possessed him were not only defeated after Fujimoto exorcised him once, but they had No Name Given. In the anime, they showed up for a second round in episode 2 before Satan possessed Fujimoto.
  • Adaptational Badass: In the anime, he is explicitly stated to have been possessed by Astaroth, the Demon King of Rot.
  • Adaptational Villainy: In the manga, the birds he was torturing weren't shown in too much detail, but in the anime, he was shooting them with a crossbow. His retaliation against Rin in the manga was him trying to cut his hair with a knife. In the anime, he tried to brand Rin with a rod he dipped in fire.
  • Jerk Ass: He was introduced shooting doves with a crossbow in a public park (Anime) or pinning them down to cut off their legs (Manga).
  • Put on a Bus: Though he should be in the True Cross Academy he has only been seen in an anime extra since his exorcism.
  • Starter Villain: The demon used him to try and find Rin to take him back to Gehenna, thus leading to Rin's awakening and starting the plot.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: Both before and after his possession, he's a jerk with white hair.

     Noriko Paku
Voiced by: Takahashi Ao (JP), Cassandra Lee (EN)

Izumo's first friend and a former cram school student.
  • Last Name Basis: Everyone, including Izumo, uses "Paku" when referring to and talking to her. The only exception is Shiemi, who refers to her as "Nori-chan" at times.
  • Morality Pet: Towards Izumo, though it took Paku a while to object to how Izumo badly was treating Shiemi, who only wanted to be friends.
  • Nice Girl: Very much so, as she's the first person in Izumo's life to befriend her and is quite capable of looking past her harsh exterior.
  • Romantic Two-Girl Friendship: With Izumo, but she happily ships her with Rin to Izumo's chagrin.
  • Satellite Character: Very little is known about her aside from her friendship with Izumo and is rarely seen without her.
  • Shipper on Deck: A special version who encourages both Shiemi and Izumo, despite the fact they share a Love Interest.

     Sei Godaiin

A normal True Cross student who Rin wants to make friends with after learning how he started seeing demons.
  • The Everyman: Which is what made him seeing Demons so strange.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: His reaction to seeing demons, leading Rin to look for a cure for him. Later defied since after Rin gets the "Demon Eye Drops" Godaiin chooses not to use them.
  • Last Name Basis: Rin only refers to him by his last name. Hilariously, it was bad enough that one of the questions asked of Kato was what his first name was.
  • Nice Guy: He quickly accepts Rin's half-demon status, though he still doesn't know he's the Son of Satan.
  • Satellite Character: His entire presence in the series is mostly to give Rin a friend outside of cram school and to give a hint to what the Illuminati's plan is about.

True Cross Order

     Shiro Fujimoto
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/300px-Shiro3_7406.jpg
Voiced by: Keiji Fujiwara (JP), Kirk Thornton (EN)

Adoptive father of Rin and Yukio, Badass Preacher, and a member of the True Cross Order. Rather eccentric. A loving father. Former Paladin. Now deceased.
  • Adult Fear: Your adopted child is the biological son of the most powerful demon in existence and if you let your guard down for even one minute said demon will possess you and use your body to literally drag him down to hell.
  • All-Loving Hero: Despite being a force to be reckoned with, he was more than willing to help anyone and anything that legitimately wanted to reform their ways, as exemplified by Kuro and Rin. In an interesting twist (anime-exclusive), he only developed this attitude because of Yuri, their mother, dying for her belief that demons and humans could coexist, and was a full-blown Knight Templar prior to this.
  • Badass Grandpa: Considering his age and the fact that he schools demons easily...
  • Badass Preacher: The head father of his church, and was a former Paladin. Also the only character so far to have been a Meister in all five exorcist specialties.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Shows up just in time to rescue Rin from the first demon he's ever encountered.
  • Cool Old Guy: From what little we've seen of him he was definitely one of these. Rin even has him at the top of his "Cool Guys According To Me" list.
  • Death by Origin Story: In the first chapter/second episode, Satan uses Demonic Possession and takes over his body to tell Rin that he's the son of Satan. He fights him off but doesn't manage to live.
  • Deceased Parents Are the Best: Of the sense that he was a great father to Rin and Yukio before he died.
  • Dying Moment of Awesome: He dies fighting off the strongest demon of Gehenna.
  • Generation Xerox: In a flashback in the manga his personality is almost exactly like Rin's, just rougher. He also shows the same kind of Doctor skill Yukio has in the present.
  • Give Him a Normal Life: Sealed away Rin's demonic powers and tried to hide his true nature to give him a normal life.
  • Giver of Lame Names: Paladin and badass he was, he sucks at name giving. He gives a powerful black Cait Sith he gets as a familiar the name Kuro. He also gave Shura her name because she gave the impression of being an Ashura.
  • Good Shepherd: Aside from the exorcist thing, he does the "mundane" sort of preaching in a monastery. He's Rin's father in two senses of the word.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: He basically killed himself to stop Satan from kidnapping Rin.
  • Heroic Willpower: Satan has been trying to possess him for years pre-series. He always failed because Fujimtoto's will was too strong. Unfortunately, losing his temper with his adoptive son (enough to hit him) turned out to be enough of a My God, What Have I Done? moment to give an opening.
  • Hyper Awareness: Downplayed, but he immediately noticed that Rin saw the coal tar - revealing that his seal is definitely too weak to contain his demonic powers - which made him follow after him.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Rough, crude, and a bit abrasive, especially in flashbacks before he adopted Rin and Yukio. At the same time, he helped the Myoo Dharani survive the demonic plague inflicting them (only demands payment afterwards and not before he starts caring for everyone) and he was injured at the time. He also lied on his mission report about where Shura came from.
  • Marshmallow Hell: He is on the receiving end of one during a flashback in chapter 78. Shura takes her top off and shoves her bare breasts in Shiro's face after he tells her to respect herself more and to stop throwing herself at men.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Done subtly, almost as a Freeze-Frame Bonus, as the way he looks at his hand after hitting Rin suggests he immediately regrets and berates himself for it. Which allows Satan the opening he had been looking for all those years...
  • Nun Too Holy:
    • Sounded like he was very interested in the ladies despite priests needing to be chaste.
    • His character profile reveals one of his favourite pastimes was collecting porn magazines. Wow.
    • His office had very prominent posters of busty women in it.
  • The Paladin: Until his death, he was the highest ranking exorcist of the world.
  • Papa Wolf: For his adoptive children he would fend off SATAN himself.
  • Parental Substitute: He was this to Rin and Yukio before dying because he raised them.
  • Posthumous Character: Even though he was introduced BEFORE he died a lot about him was only learned though flashbacks.
  • Smoking Is Cool: He was often seen smoking and was a pretty cool guy.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Heavily implied that taking in and raising Rin and Yukio softened him quite a bit, comparing his attitude in the first chapter to him in flashbacks.

     Arthur Auguste Angel
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Arthur_An_3347.jpg
Voiced by Daisuke Ono (JP), David Vincent (EN)

The newly appointed Paladin. Angel follows the orders of the Vatican to a T. He'll do so even knowing full well that his actions are immoral in the eyes of others. Very little is known about his past.
  • Alliterative Name: Arthur. Auguste. Angel.
  • Big Damn Heroes: In episode 25 to save the main heroes.
  • BFS: Caliburn is a big blade and it talks, too!
  • Bishounen: Was designed to be kind of a prick as well as handsome
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Shura calls him "a saint on the outside and a devil on the inside". He's also shown shades of a sadistic personality.
  • Calling Your Attacks: ANGEL SLASH!
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Both on the delivering and receiving ends. He easily manages to subdue both Rin and Shura, but when Amaimon went into an Unstoppable Rage (Anime Only), he was almost immediately knocked out.
  • Dumb Blond: Blond, an idiot...check.
  • Fantastic Racism: In the anime, "for the kin of Satan, just being alive is a sin!" In the manga, referring to Mephisto, "his kind specializes in deceit!"
  • Green-Eyed Monster: In chapter 38 of the manga, we see just how upset he was that he didn't get the chance to fight the Impure King, and sees how Rin was the one to defeat it as adding insult to injury.
  • Honor Before Reason: As of episode 24, he's admitted to realizing that the Vatican is going in the wrong direction, but he refuses to betray them and will still follow his orders.
  • Idiot Hero: Whether or not he truly counts as a "Hero" may vary, but he is the Paladin...and even admits to being dimwitted.
  • Jerk Ass: Arrogant, takes great pleasure in antagonizing the other characters (Rin in particular), has plenty of Kick the Dog moments, and frequently refers to the memory of his predecessor (who was both a better paladin and overall person) with open contempt.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Further appearances slowly shows him as a very flawed but still somewhat good person. Fantastic Racism and his stubborn idiocy gets in the way a lot, but he cares for his subordinates and is very upset that one of his "Angelic Squad" members is part of the Illuminati.
  • Kick the Dog:
    • In the anime, he takes exceptional pleasure in trying to kill Neuhause's wife despite Shiemi begging him to show her mercy.
    • In the manga, he takes an unholy glee at stabbing Rin's leg to "contain" him during the trial.
  • Lawful Stupid: Arthur will follow the orders of his superiors, without question, even knowing that they may obstruct some people's good intentions. He does get a bit better in the anime where he saves Shura and Shiemi in episode 25. He also leaves without incident after the final battle. Nothing in regards to the manga.

     Lewin "Lightning" Light

One of the four Arc Knights and often works with the current Paladin.
  • Affably Evil: No matter what horrible thing he's doing he acts friendly and polite.
  • Eccentric Mentor: To Ryuji as he finds him "interesting" and he also requested it.
  • The Gadfly: He really likes poking at people. Even if they don't notice his teasing (like Angel) he enjoys it.
  • Jerk Ass: When interrogating a spy he will even bring in their innocent family in order to get the information he wants.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: After his introduction to the main cast he reveals himself to be pretty tolerant and even understanding of demons and explicitly states his reason for being an exorcist is because he "loves this world".
  • Nice Hat: He's always wearing a hat that obscures his eyes.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Most people call him Lightning.
  • Red Baron: His Nickname comes from his title "The Master of Lightning".
  • The Smart Guy: Quickly figures out various things, including who's behind the Gehenna Gate in Russian and plans things out for the interrogation so he will win. Definitely contrasts him with Angel. He's also capable of screwing with Arias and even making up Fatal Verses for demons that previously didn't have any.
  • Spell My Name with an "S": Lewin Light or Ruin Rite? The former is an actual name.
  • Street Smart: Very good at manipulating people, on the fly thinking, and keep calm no matter what. In fact, he's so visibly good at this that Ryuji requests to be made his apprentice for this very reason.
  • Summon Magic: He's a Tamer in contract with a Upper-tier air elemental, Furfur, as well as lower level sylphs. He's capable of summoning them without a circle or incantation, supposedly because he's befriended them. He even created a Fatal Verse to banish them if needed.

Kyoto/Myōō Dharani

     Tatsuma Suguro

The Most High Priest and Ryuji's father.
  • A Father to His Men: Is definitely this to the members of the Myōō Dharani as shown when he shows up Big Damn Heroes style to save Mamushi.
  • Broken Pedestal: To Ryuji and Mamushi due to how he distances himself from exorcist work and the temple group.
  • Cool Old Guy: No matter how badly he's treated or how his temple is insulted he just smiles and stays calm to try and keep Ryuji from being discouraged.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: That odd, slightly perverted and almost wimpy guy over there? He is the head priest of the Myōō Dharani and if you give him a reason, he will show you that he definitely earned it.
  • Playing with Fire: Through his familiar Karura, he wields fire.
  • Rebuilt Pedestal: The events of the Kyoto arc reveal what he really intends and desires, allowing Ryuji to regain his faith in his father.
  • Secret Keeper: He holds all the secrets of the Myōō Dharani and it is such that is the source of his contract with Karura.

     Juuzou Shima

An Upper Second Class Exorcist and the 2nd son of the Shima family.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: With Mamushi. Emphasis on the Belligerent part as even after they are engaged, Mamushi scratches up his face.
  • Big Brother Mentor: To his younger brothers he is a good teacher. He also acts like this towards Ryuji and Konekomaru, even in childhood, but not so much to Renzo. Though that's partially because while Juuzo looks up to his deceased older brother Takezo, Renzo doesn't, resulting in a gape between them.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: The responsible level headed blue oni to Kinzou's more foolish red oni.
  • Friend to All Children: His profile notes him to be one, and in flashbacks, he's shown to be protective and caring towards a younger Renzou, Ryuji, and Konekomaru.
  • Nice Guy: He's genuinely a good guy and quite polite too.
  • Victorious Childhood Friend: To Mamushi, after the Kyoto arc they get together and are now engaged.

     Kinzou Shima

The fourth son of the Shima family, Renzō's older brother and a Middle Second-Class exorcist.
  • Attack Hello: He usually greets Shima with a tackle or a punch.
  • Big Brother Bully: Greets his brother with a punch! Despite that, he's really a minor example and shows more care than other cases of this trope.
  • Buxom Is Better: His reasoning for not accepting Juuzo wanting to marry Mamushi is because she has small breasts.
  • Dumb Blond: Is an idiot and has blond hair.
  • Dye Hard: invoked He dyed his hair and it's most likely because the "Kin"(金) in his name means "gold".
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: The hot blooded foolish red oni to Juuzou's more responsible blue oni.
  • Hidden Depths: He's very good at playing the shamisen. Shame his chosen genre is a hard one to listen to...
  • Hot-Blooded: Very energetic and even willing to attack the Impure King head on. Word of God also says he was a very energetic child.
  • Idiot Hero: Referred to as a "fucking idiot" and doesn't do anything but prove it's true.
  • Innocently Insensitive: A light novel chapter focusing on a Christmas with the Kyoto Trio that takes place pre-joining up with True Cross, has him constantly forget about Renzo, calling Ryuji and Konekomaru his "precious little brothers" but makes no mention of Renzo. Renzo lampshades this but Kinzo doesn't notice.
  • Shipper on Deck: In the bonus chapter "Kin-nii's Band Has Zero Popularity" Kinzo forces tickets on Renzo and encourages him to ask out Izumo once he realizes he likes her.
  • The Quiet One: Despite all of above, he tends to stick to the background and stay quiet more often than not. He only gets talkative really with those he knows.

     Mamushi Hojo

The eldest sibling of the three Hojo daughters and a Middle First-Class exorcist at the Kyoto Branch.

     Takezou Shima

The eldest sibling of Juuzou, Kinzou and Renzou. Died during the Blue Night to save Renzo and Ryuji.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Saved a baby Renzou and Ryuji during the Blue Night and died for it.
  • Posthumous Character: His self-sacrifice shaped Kinzou's and Juuzou's dedication to exorcism. Renzou, on the other hand, is deeply bothered by the lofty status given to someone who died. This influences his choice to become a Double Agent.

Demons

     Satan, The Demon King

The ruler of Gehenna, and father of Rin and Yukio, along with Samael, Amaimon and Lucifer.
  • Archnemesis Dad: While he may be Rin and Yukio's father he is the Big Bad of the series.
  • Authority Equals Asskicking: The ruler of Gehenna, first of the eight demon kings, and is so powerful his mere presence destroys most of his human hosts.
  • Ax-Crazy: First appearance in the manga and anime reeks of this. In the anime, after possessing Yukio and playing pyromaniac he seriously keeps up that appearance. Yet with Yuri, he was quite sane and even inquisitive.
  • Big Bad: The king of Gehenna, leader of the demons, and the primary cause of Rin's conflict.
  • Blue and Orange Morality: Oh, Satan. When Yuri said she dreamed of a world where demons and humans could live together, she didn't mean that you should turn Assiah into a wasteland in the process. Also, "nurturing a life" implies that you are not allowed to possess said life at a later date. Poor Communication Kills indeed.
  • Body Horror: Anyone he possesses without sufficient compatibility will burn and mutate.
  • Demonic Possession: He tries but always fails. The number of people who can perfectly house his full power is limited to less than five people. Everyone else spontaneously bursts into flames.
  • Hellfire: His trademark blue flames. He's the ruler of the place where this stuff comes from.
  • Greater Scope Villain: Due his inability to stay in Aisha for more than a few seconds, he's more of a background character despite his authority and power.
  • Love Makes You Evil: In the anime's climax. His plan is to create a world where humans and demons can coexist because that's what Yuri, his human lover, wished for. He does this by possessing their son, merging Assiah and Gehana in apocalyptic fashion, and beating their other son when he objects.
  • Occult Blue Eyes: His blue eyes are one of the few identifying features he is known to have.
  • Playing with Fire: His signature blue flames.
  • Jerkass: He treated Rin terribly during their first meeting and all the while possessing Fujimoto.
  • Superpower Meltdown: Destroying hosts is a common problem with powerful demons, which is why they use various PowerLimiters to stay in Assiah. As the strongest demon of all his mere presence causes this these leading to a lot of gore and Body Horror for his unfortunate victims.
  • Thinking Up Portals: Is the only being who can naturally, and efficiently, create a Gehenna Gate. However, there is rarely a person who can last long enough for him to create one.

     Amaimon
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Amaimon_8685.jpg
Voiced by: Tetsuya Kakihara (JP), Darrel Guilbeau (EN)

Mephisto's younger brother and another son of Satan, known as the "Earth King". He seems rather detached and childish and doesn't care much about Rin, preferring to go tour Japan.
  • Anime Hair: He has a horn/spike hairstyle similar to Tao Ren's.
  • Authority Equals Asskicking: He's only 7th or 8th highest ranking of all demons in terms of strength, making him one of the weakest of the demon kings, but he is still a demon king.
  • Berserk Button: A good way to get him serious or into a fight is to laugh at him. So don't laugh at him. Ever.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: He may be odd but he can break a man's arm by poking it and kill any exorcist who tries to stop him.
  • Big Brother Bully: In a matter of speaking, towards Rin. They're half-brothers after all, and he beat the kid senseless.
  • Big Eater: He is often seen eating junk food and candy whenever he appears in but is one of the skinniest members of the cast.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: Absurdly shaped and large.
  • Put on a Bus: Disappears after his big fight with Rin in ch13. He reappears later briefly in both ch39 and ch44, before finally returning at the end of ch82.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: He will start talking about surfing while standing on a speeding roller coaster in the middle of a fight or use his fingers as pretend binoculars while spying on his little brother.
  • Creepy Blue Eyes: Possibly to help show he is one of Satan's children; see occult blue eyes and adaption dye job above.
  • Curbstomp Battle: In chapter 39, he knocks Rin out in a single hit going into his true form, making it clear that Rin is not stronger than him. In the anime, the positions are reversed, as Rin is capable of incinerating him in a single blow.
  • Demonic Possession: Technically, for a demon to stay in Assiah aside from being born, they have to do this. An Omake stated he's possessing some poor guy.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: As the King of Earth.
  • Dissonant Serenity: The whole time he's fighting Rin and the others, he seems...calm. Amused. He also lets out a cheerful "yaaaay" when Rin unsheathes Kurikara.
  • Dull Surprise: Despite having almost 1000 years experience with human emotions he hasn't quite got the hang of facial expressions yet.
  • Familiar: His is a large hobgoblin called Behemoth.
  • Fangs Are Evil: His seem more obvious than most because of how often they're shown, since he is often seen eating.
  • Fun Size: In the anime he can turn into a hamster.
  • Hellish Pupils: Like most demons his pupils are slitted.
  • I Shall Taunt You: Or in this case "I will pretend to play a Japanese version of tag to get you to fight me" or "I will target your Love Interest and pretend to marry her (or chew her lips off) to make you take fighting me more seriously".
  • Immortality Begins at 20: While his human host appears to be a teenager, the 10th volume of the manga mentions Amaimon has been using him for almost a thousand years.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: By Berserk!Rin in the anime and Mephisto in the manga. Since he is a demon neither case actually kills him, only succeeding in destroying his host body and turning him into a Demon Pincushion respectively.
  • It Amused Me: Like his brother, he's primarily interested in simply doing something that doesn't bore him.
  • Knight of Cerebus: As soon as he shows up, things start to get dangerous for Rin. More so on his second appearance, where he seriously threatens and even harms the main cast and forces Rin to use his Blue Flames to save them all...resulting in the execution order over his head.
  • Lightning Bruiser: One finger from him could break a bone and he was so fast that Rin could hardly keep up with him.
  • Meaningful Name: He shares a name with a Biblical Prince of Hell, which is only to be expected.
  • Morphic Resonance: His hamster form is mostly green with a lighter colored hair-horn that mimics his human form.
  • Pre Ass Kicking One Liner: "'Don't screw around' is my line."
  • Psychopathic Manchild: He treats fighting like its a game to him, wants to kill anyone that he finds annoying, and doesn't care many people up hurt or killed because of his actions long as he doesn't upset his big brother.
  • Really 700 Years Old: He is at least a thousand years old.
  • Reptiles Are Abhorrent: His true demon form revealed with his "Demon Heart" has very lizard-like qualities like his tail design, scaled arms, and green coloration.
  • Saying Sound Effects Out Loud: Byoooooo~n.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: Mephisto essentially has a tight leash on Amaimon at all times and basically gets called out to "train" Rin or some other errand.
  • Super Power Meltdown: Why he, and most demons, hide their Demon Heart. Even throwing one super punch was enough to knock himself out because of the strain it put on his host.
  • Super Strength: A poke from him breaks bone. He also launches Rin through a roller coaster by just flicking him.
  • Sweet Tooth: He is often seen eating candy, possibly due to how his name sounds like "Amai Mono" which means "sweet things" in japanese.
  • Tareme Eyes: An inversion where a male villain has 'em.
  • Tranquil Fury: Since his face isn't that expressive he winds up looking really calm even if he's in the middle of punching someone's FACE off.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: Similar to how Mephisto has purple hair and Rin has blue hair it is most likely to help show he is a demon.

     Kuro (Blacky)
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/300px-Kuro16_9347.jpg
Voiced by Ayahi Takagaki (JP), Stephanie Sheh (EN)

A cat sith who used to be the guardian deity of some local silk farmers. Was forgotten by people as the times changed, going berserk, but Fujimoto was able to tame him and make him his familiar. Later became Rin's familiar after he calmed Kuro from the rage of hearing about Fujimoto's death.
  • Badass Adorable: Adorable as a normal sized cat and badass in his giant size.
  • Cool Pet: A Size shifting demonic two tailed Cait sith, thus acting as a combination of the Nekomata from Japanese mythology and the Cait Sith from Celtic folklore.
  • Familiar: While not a summon like most familiars he acts as Rin's after Fujimoto's death is explained to him.
  • Fun Size: He can be small enough to act as a Head Pet.
  • Head Pet: In his small form he rides on Rin's head or his shoulder.
  • Mega Neko: He can get to be bigger then some CARS. Rin (and friends) can ride him.
  • Multiple-Tailed Beast: He has two tails of the split version.
  • No Pronunciation Guide: The official pronunciation (in the dub at least) is Cat-See, the actual pronunciation is supposed to be Kett-Shee.
  • Panthera Awesome: He is a rather impressive example when big and could hold off a bunch of exorcists without much trouble.
  • Sizeshifter: Between huge demon and normal cat sizes.
  • Telepathy: Rin can read his thoughts.

     Hachiro

Known as Hachitaro of the Sanko, this man is a super-high level demon known as a Hydra and the one who initially gave Shura her Ancestral Weapon due to a pact made with her ancestor. He's intent on Shura having a child to continue honoring their deal.

Unmarked Spoilers Below

  • Alas, Poor Villain: Shura and Rin at the least feel this way.
  • Blue and Orange Morality: The defining demon with this in this series so far.
  • Extra Eyes: Has a ridiculous amount of eyes on his face, which enhances his creepy and inhuman appearance.
  • Healing Factor: His healing factor is so strong that he's essentially immortal, and his blood can heal wounds quickly. This makes him a target for the Illuminati.
  • Master Swordsman: Noted to have spent his very long life practicing the sword to kill time. He's the one who taught Shura and her ancestors.
  • Mystical White Hair: Has white hair because he is a demon.
  • People Puppets: Can control people who he lays his eyes on, though he mentions not liking to do it because it dulls the mind.
  • Reincarnation Romance: Invoked sans the memories of the past. He falls deeply in love with Tatsuko and wants to be with her always. So, as part of the blood curse, all of Tatsuko's line will be women and they will all look like she did. This way he can be with her forever, at least in his mind.
  • Reptiles Are Abhorrent: He comes off this way because he's intent on making Shura honor her ancestors deal, one way or another.
  • Who Wants to Live Forever?: He's bored with eternal life being sealed away, so when he fell in love with Tatsuko it was refreshing.

Illuminati

     Lucifer

Eldest son of Satan and leader of the Illuminati. He is the demon king presiding over light.
  • Affably Evil: Introduces himself very politely despite breaking the seals of True Cross Order branches around the world.
  • Anime Hair: Underneath the helmet, has a point in his hair similar to Amaimon's, though not as well-defined.
  • Authority Equals Ass Kicking: He's second in the demonic hierarchy of Gehenna, right below Satan himself. Even in his sickly state, Mephisto states that he, the 3rd strongest demon in Gehenna, is no match for Lucifer.
  • Big Entrance:
    • Makes projections of lights and destroys the barrier around the academy when he appeared.
    • Even later when introducing himself personally to Yukio he makes a big entrance despite the circumstances!
  • Bishōnen: Fitting his normal description, though despite his pale (blond or white) hair he still looks a lot like his siblings complete with a Ahoge like bit of hair shaped like a wing that matches the pattern established by Mephisto and Amaimon and a fluffy tail like Rin's.
  • Cool Helmet: Mephisto compliments him on it.
  • Dark Lord on Life Support: Though only seen in the shadows in the beginning, it is heavily assumed that, during his preparation for his Big Entrance, he's shown to have been connected to a heart monitor and IV drip. When we do see all of him it's clear his condition is much worse than what was implied before.
  • The Dragon: Hints from some of his dialogue suggest he's this to Satan.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Expresses utter disgust towards Gedouin and his cruelty before vaporizing him for his disobedient actions.
  • Ill Boy: He's still in bad shape and spends a lot of his speech pausing to cough. Now the fans have to wonder what can make a demon that ill... Judging by what he tells his scientists about making a "perfect body for his father" he might just be suffering a weaker version of Satan's tendency of destroying his hosts, like what Amaimon displayed before by releasing his Demon Heart.
  • Kick the Son of a Bitch: Vaporizes Gedouin for disobeying him one too many times. The little man definitely had it coming.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Even more so than the previous one (Amaimon), as Lucifer's first appearance even in shadow is when things start to get very serious. Come his first full on appearance, and Cerebus Syndrome really starts kicking in for the series.
  • Knight Templar: Genuinely believes that mixing the worlds of Gehenna and Assiah will solve the world's ills. Mephisto disagrees, believing that the desire to overcome one's bad situation makes humanity unique.
  • Light 'em Up: When he makes his entrance and subsequently destroys the barriers of True Cross Order branches around the world.
  • Light Is Not Good: Leader of the big baddies and the King of Light, check.
  • Meaningful Name: Lucifer means "Light-Bearer", as mentioned above under Rin.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: Shows this when he personally talks to Yukio.
  • Super Power Meltdown: He pushed his human host just a bit too much with his big entrance and it caused him to cough up some blood. Even showing up in Assiah to talk for a short period of time causes his human body to brake down like his father does, despite still being hooked up to everything meant to keep him stable.
  • Tears of Blood: Shortly after showing his human face for a brief time to speak with his subordinates he started suffering from these (along with a Psychic Nosebleed) to show how fragile his body really is.

     Saburota Toudou

A former exorcist, now demon. His reasons for turning traitor remain unknown but are likely related to his jealousy of, and attempts to catch up with, his father and siblings.
  • Affably Evil: He is always very polite, even when he betrays both the exorcists and Mamushi. In fact, he arguably became even more polite after he revealed himself to be evil.
  • Batman Gambit: Pulls one off by obtaining both demon eyes through a bit of manipulation and trickery, then using them to deliberately awaken the Impure King. He knew that this would cause Tatsuma to show up and try to defeat the Impure King using his familiar Kurara. This weakened Tatsuma, allowing Toudou to kill him (who was saved by a revived Karura) and allow him to eat Karura to gain his power. It had all gone according to plan.
  • Breaking Speech: Gives one and more on a regular basis to Yukio.
    • First one: after revealing himself as an exorcist fallen to a demon, he mentioned he was always in the shadow of his father and brothers, and he never could voice his doubts about his path. It rattles Yukio, but Yukio decides that he is not Saburota, but himself.
    • Second one: In their next confrontation, Saburota says that Yukio's father and brother are what have defined his paths in life and that he had no real choice in his path, leading him to despise his brother for having no idea what agony he went through. Yukio admits that he does love and hate his brother, but above all else he hates himself the most.
    • THIRD one: Following his discovery of Yukio's blue eyes (after almost killing the kid) and after Yukio thought Saburota was destroyed, Saburota regenerates and comments that self-loathing is the first step to becoming a demon and that Yukio's true nature is that of a demon. Yukio has had enough of Toudou by this point.
  • Cannibalism Super Power: He noms demons to control their powers.
  • Complete Immortality: The logical conclusion of combining From a Single Cell, Fountain of Youth, and how demons tend to have extremely long lifespans.
  • The Corrupter: He convinced a loyal member of the Kyoto Branch Office to give him the dangerous Right Eye of the Impure King. He is actively attempting to manipulate Yukio for unknown but definitely unsavory ends.
  • Driven by Envy: Claims that his major reason for becoming Illuminati is because of this towards his elder brothers and father.
  • Evil Feels Good: He implies this much while talking to Yukio. Said to Yukio almost verbatim as "it's nice to be a demon".
  • Man Child: His reasons for being with the Illuminati boils down to him throwing a tantrum over how he was never accepted by his family and never could match their expectations. His age regression after eating Karura just makes it more obvious and worse.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He got Yukio to talk with him during their fights despite Yukio knowing, and earlier explained to Rin and Shiemi how dangerous talking with a demon can be.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: He was first seen as an Upper Second Class exorcist with a timid personality who provided some exposition about an incident involving one of the demon eyes. He seemed like an incompetent, but reasonably brave and decent, guy. And then it turns out it was all an act. He had in fact already turned traitor and only exposed himelf as The Mole in the chapter in which he was introduced. He has since shown considerable competence and cunning. He is now one to watch out for.
  • Stalker Without A Crush: In his own words, he is "very interested" in Yukio.
  • Start of Darkness: He described his. He wanted to be like his father and brother, but was discontent with living a life he felt was shaped by others. Ultimately he became a demon and is working for his own goals.
  • Youthful Freckles: A frightening inversion, as he turned younger following devouring Karura but he's still a 55 years old.

     Illuminati Spies

Little is known about them as a whole but so far only one of them has had their identity revealed.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: The spy that Lightning and Angel interrogates breaks when Lightning threatens to harm his wife and child.
  • The Mole: Their main purpose for the order is to infiltrate and keep tabs on the Order of the True Cross, so far there are two in the Vatican itself and one in the Japanese branch. For tropes specific to the Japan Branch mole see Renzou Shima in the Cram School Student's section.

     Dr. Gedouin

A doctor of the Illuminati.
  • Body Horror: Uses the Savior Mask to turn himself into a huge monster to try to kill the heroes.
  • Death by Irony: Everything he did was to gain praise from Lucifer. Fittingly, not only does Lucifer vaporize him for his disobedience, he expresses disgust at Gedouin's cruelty just before doing so.
  • Four Eyes, Zero Soul: Wears glasses and is a complete Jerkass.
  • Gonk: He has a very squat design which suits him perfectly since it makes him look like a very fat child instead of a normal adult, he is even shorter than Izumo's mother when he is standing next to them as they is sitting in their wheelchair.
  • Humans Are the Real Monsters: Uses an argument along the lines of humans being worse than demons to justify his atrocities when Rin calls him out. He himself is worse than a demon, but fewer others are.
  • It's All About Me: Cares about absolutely nothing aside from pleasing Lucifer and his own personal advancement.
  • Jerkass: He has no problems telling Izumo exactly what he will do to her and her sister after showing them what was left of their mother after he experimented on her for years.
  • Lack of Empathy: He in fact relishes over others' suffering.
  • Mad Scientist: Let's just say whoever he experiments on does not come out in one piece.
  • Not Quite Dead: Manages to survive getting incinerated by the heroes thanks to the elixir experiments he conducted on himself. Lucifer fixes that in the next chapter.
  • Perpetual Smiler: He is always smiling, especially when he's causing people pain.

Others

     Tamamo Kamiki

The previous head of the Inari Shrine and Izumo's mother.
  • Abusive Parents: Wasn't initially, but being told by your husband that he won't hang out with you because he thinks children are pains turned her into this.
  • Bandage Babe: Currently spending her time covered in bandages, strapped to a wheelchair.
  • Body Horror: Possessed by the spirit of the Nine-Tailed Fox and subjected to years of experimentation that has left her an emaciated and bandaged mess.
  • Demonic Possession: The weakness in her heart caused her to be possessed by the Ninetail Fox she was supposed to be keeping sealed.
  • Dying as Yourself: Dies calling her daughters her treasures one last time.
  • Fate Worse Than Death: She's been experimented on and reduced to a withered husk of a woman as a result of being possessed and captured by the Illuminati
  • Gag Boobs: Very, very stacked which is hilarious since Izumo isn't.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: She forcefully takes the Nine Tails that's possessing Izumo so that when she dies it will go with her, saving Izumo and screwing up the Illuminati's plans.
  • Hidden Depths: Turns out the reason Izumo can go to True Cross is because of money she left behind for her.
  • Mama Bear: Once she's freed of the Nine Tails influence because it possessed her daughter, she stood up for what must have been the first time in years and proceeded to not only avoid its attacks but remove it.
  • Miko: Older than the usual version, but was a very powerful one. She was in possession by the Nine Tails for five years and never gave in enough for it to overtake her whereas her daughter couldn't last more than a few minutes. On top of that she forcefully exorcised it out of Izumo and into her while it was trying to kill her without much effort and in a body that hadn't been mobile for ages.
  • Offing the Offspring: Attempted to do this after being possessed.
  • The Power of Hate: The Ninetails that possessed her seems to run off of this, getting into her as she starts to get angry and resentful of others, starting to hate aspects of her life.
  • Walking Spoiler: Obviously, considering her big impact and role in regards to Izumo's past and the Illuminati.
  • Woman Child: Was incredibly immature, introduced crying over people not liking her and asking her daughter for help there. her immature nature not only hints at how much power the Inami family had over her but led to her getting possessed as she didn't have the mental fortitude to handle her lover's rejection.

     Tsukumo Kamiki// Tsukiko Takara

An adorable little girl with ties to Izumo's past as she is her sister and the reason behind all of her actions before and during Inari.
  • Cheerful Child: She's almost never not seeing smiling and when she's not it's rather heartbreaking.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: Averted. Izumo adores her and she's very polite and sweet to her sister and others even as Tsukiko.
  • No Infantile Amnesia: Averted to an heartbreaking extent as Tsukiko can't even recognize Izumo despite how much she looks like her.
  • Protectorate: To Izumo. This is exploited as it makes it easy for the Illuminati to manipulate Izumo.
  • Spoiled Sweet: What she has become as Tsukiko Takara, as her brief appearance shows her being very polite to her foster parents and even Izumo when she suddenly shows up in their garden.
  • When You Coming Home, Dad?: Asks this of Izumo as Tamamo starts avoiding her daughters and home.

     Yuri Egin (Manga)

Rin and Yukio's mother. Not much is known about her, aside from the previous fact and the fact that she was a Lower First Class exorcist. Even in-universe her true status appears to be unknown.
  • But Not Too Foreign: Her name suggests she's of mixed-heritage.
  • Missing Mom: Whatever happened to her, she's definitely absent from her sons' lives.
  • The Lost Lenore: In ch78, how Shura refers to her suggests she might be this for Shiro!

Anime exclusive

     Ernst Frederik Egin
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Ernst_683.jpg
Voiced by: Toshihiko Miki (JP), Dave Mallow (EN)

The Grandfather to Rin and Yukio on their mother's side. He's first seen during the Blue Night in episode one and absent until the final arc. Having lost his daughter, Rin and Yukio's mother to a witch hunt, he has good reasons for his prejudice against all things demon, as well as some ill will towards members of the True Cross Order.

  • Canon Foreigner: Added exclusively to the anime for the sake of the Gecko Ending.
  • Church Militant: The True Cross Order was always this, but after he's appointed as the new Pope he brings it up to eleven by giving high school students enchanted sub-machine guns.
  • Evil Laugh: When his gate is open and the Messiah bomb is about to drop, he lets out a mighty one of these.
  • Fantastic Racism: Towards demons. Not even his daughter is safe if she shows sympathy towards them.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Why he has to wear a mask. He condemned his daughter and her blue-flame lover possessed him to free her. The result was a nasty burn mark.
  • Villainous Breakdown: He loses his calm demeanor once his Messiah bomb failed to destroy Hell, and becomes terrified when he is being dragged into it, he frantically begs Yukio to save him. Except Yukio found out that Ernst ordered the witch hunt to kill Yuri and leaves him for dead.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Willing to kill his own grandson through an extremely painful magical/religious ritual in order to "win the war against Gehena."

     Yuri Egin (Anime)
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Yuri_Egin_8291.jpg
Voiced by: Megumi Hayashibara (JP), Cherami Leigh (EN)

The Anime Exclusive version of Yuri Egin is detailed below. The manga version has yet to be revealed.

A lower-second class exorcist who gave birth to Rin and Yukio. She was known as the "Witch of the Forest" and was ordered to be burned at the stake. This lead to the Blue Night.
  • All-Loving Heroine: She believes that humans and demons can co-exist. In her view, the only thing preventing this from happening is a refusal to understand each other.
  • Beauty Mark: She had a mole under her eyes. Her son Yukio got them from her.
  • Burn the Witch!: She was tied to a stake and ordered to be burned. Her demonic lover prevented that from happening.
  • But Not Too Foreign: Her father is definitely not Japanese, but her name suggests that her mother was.
  • Canon Foreigner: She was first established in the anime's continuity. The manga version has nothing except but her name and rank so far revealed.
  • Death by Childbirth: She died giving birth to her sons.
  • Did You Just Romance Cthulhu?: Yes, yes she did. In the anime, this is why the Blue Night happened - Satan refused to let her be murdered over this trope, and searched for a host within the nearby clergy. All of them disintegrated immediately, except for her own father.
  • Friend to All Living Things: Including demons, which caused her to be known as the "Witch of the forest" and why she could bond with SATAN of all people.
  • The Lost Lenore: To Satan. In the anime, he wishes to create a world where humans and demons can coexist because that's what Yuri wished for.
  • Missing Mom: Her sons never met her.
  • Morality Pet: To Satan. She helped him understand the meaning of life and he cared about her enough to cause the Blue Night in an attempt to save her from her execution.
  • Posthumous Character: We only learn about her through flashbacks.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: She was able to host Satan, so they bonded, one thing led to another... and then we got Rin and Yukio.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: In a more literal sense, which is why she wound up having his kids.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: Enthusiastic in her belief that demons and humans could co-exist despite the eternal war going on, and heedless of criticism. Even Satan loved the ideology - unfortunately, he got it a bit twisted around by the time he could act on it.

Movie Exclusive

     Usamaro
Voiced by: Rie Kugimiya (JP), Cassandra Lee (EN)

A child-like demon Rin found who seems to have amnesia.

  • Animal Motifs: A rabbit, which is why he is named Usamaro because "Usa" means "Rabbit".
  • Children Are Innocent: Even demonic children apparently. Except this is a bad thing since he is too innocent to understand how much damage his attempts to "help" those around him actually causes.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: A really friendly blond once he gets used to you.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: He reverses time and destroys himself to save the city.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Considering his memory loss he seems to be the victim of it... Except since he is the very same demon from the fairytale this is actually his trademark technique.
  • Pure Is Not Good: Just because he is sweet and innocent child who just wants to help people doesn't mean he isn't a threat to others. Just ask the last town he "helped".
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Mostly red at least, like a rabbit's... But he is demon, which should be warning enough.
  • Ret Gone: erases himself, and only Rin and Liu remember him.
  • Time Lord: Kinda, since officially he is considered to be "kin of Saemel, King of Time" he can be considered one of these. His ability to "eat" memories is apparently based on erasing the event from a person's personal history, or changing past events so the person doesn't remember them happening so his connection to "Time" isn't that strange.

     Cheng-Long Liu
Voiced by: Hidenobu Kiuchi (JP), Todd Haberkorn (EN)

A Senior Exorcist First Class from the Taiwan Branch.

  • The Cynic: Until Rin astounds him and lets him see what it's like to open up a demon's heart.
  • Heroic Albino: Sits on the boundary, since he is an exorcist, just doing his job.
  • Heroic Lineage: He's descended from the exorcist that sealed away Usamaro the first time.
  • Knight Templar: He's not quite this, but he does make jokes about being one.
  • Nice Hat: A Chinese bamboo hat, he gets rid of it early on.
  • Ripple Effect-Proof Memory: Seems to have this, which might be why his ancestor was able to seal the memory based demon from the fairytale.
