As your friendly neighborhood Admin Team, the gang here at TVTropes HQ is always working to improve the site.
Many of those improvements begin with suggestions posted right here, on the Community Wishlist. Is there a feature you really want on TVTropes? Post it.
Is there something we could be doing better? We want to know. Do you think we look fat in these pants? We were totally afraid of that. See a bug? Report it.
Important things to know:
- We're all about that content-creation life! The top contenders for our attention are ideas that'll create more content, like the video uploading feature, or speed up launching new pages. On the flip side, design or layout tweaks won't be our top priority.
- Help us dig through the goldmine of old wishlist items! If you have an old request gathering dust or spot one you're totally on board with, give it a bump and a like. There's a treasure trove of 6+ years' worth of ideas just waiting to be rediscovered. Items without enough love may not make the cut and will be closed.
- Was your wishlist item locked up without an explanation? It was most likely disapproved or just too big of a task versus the benefit it would ultimately have. Time is precious, and we want to focus on updates with the biggest bang for the buck. Don't be discouraged though! We appreciate every idea and we're always listening.
Make a Tech Wish:
closed Link to Wiki Tools in the sidebar
The Itty Bitty Wiki Tools are really useful and can be quite hard to find if you don't think to start looking in Administrivia. (It took me almost ten minutes of googling and trawling the forums to finally find the "folderize" tool.) A link to this page in the "tools" or "tips" section of the sidebar would be a godsend.
Edited by LongLiveHumourworkingPreview button when starting a thread
Because you have to draft the OP in another thread to see how it looks before using the new thread form. I've noticed this was mentioned before, but I'll keep this as a new query.
open[Profile/Forum Threads] Mark thread as read button
While I'm aware that we used to have a "Mark All As Read" button inside thread watch, which caused issues, as it would cause every single forum post on every single thread to be parsed, and marked as read.
Instead, it might make sense to have a "mark as read/unread" button for individual threads, in much the same way that there is an "unfollow" button for them. This would mark the thread as read/unread, in much the same way that there is one for the forums.
Alternatively this could work by simply setting the latest forum post as 'unread', overwriting a previous 'unread' setting, and mark the final remaining post as 'read'.
openTrope Speller/Search Finder
I find it somewhat hard trying to memorize certain trope names, which forces me to open up lots of tabs in order to google the name. Can a sort of search bar be added as a way to easily spell and find trope names, since it would reduce the amount of tabs and coding being used.
openPage making
A better way to create a page for a specific media work like a button on the top dash board because I canāt remember how to create a new page for a webcomic that I think deserves one.
openAuto-discard any TLP draft that gets 5 more bombs than hats (maybe fewer)
I think Iāve suggested this before. It could help curb toxic TLP culture and draft dogpiling, and reinforce bombs as a means of discarding drafts and not a glorified downvote button.
Edited by PurpleEyedGumaopenMoving VideoExamples/ to another tab
These pages are often get mistaken as articles. However, they don't have functionality of articles, because they are on technical level not articles, they effectively filter videos list to be about a specific page.
To reduce confusion, perhaps it may best to move the link to videos to a bar above (Related History Discussion).
Also... for example, VideoExamples.Agony Of The Feet is hardly different from its own video menu, so perhaps the former is redundant and we can remove VideoExamples/ as a (fake) namespace.
workingSection editing (high priority)
There's something that I think really needs to be added: editing for collapsible sections, as with all WMF and Fandom (Wikia) wikis. See, when I edit something as lengthy as (for instance) SCP Foundation: SCPs 3000 to 3999 or SCP Foundation: SCPs 2000 to 2499 on a mobile device, my keyboard takes about 4-5 seconds between each keystroke, resulting in a rather annoying delay. Is there anything at all that can be done about this? Other than splitting up each page, of course (since there are some Main pages that are long enough for my keyboard to spend just 1 second between each keystroke).
openA Namespace About Story Worlds
This is probably never gonna happen, but what if there was a 🌎Setting/note I got this particular name from the All The Tropes and Tropedia categories of the same name or 🗺️Map/ namespace where like on FANDOM, Tropers could submit/create a Fantasy World Map of a respective work or verse that lists areas of various episodes/installments/factions. It would be pretty tricky to implement, but it would be awesome!
closed Updating the Word Cruft link on the sidebar
The link to the Word Cruft policy page on the sidebar currently links to Main.Word Cruft, even though the page was moved to Administrivia.Word Cruft several years ago via the Outdated Administrivia Pages Wiki Talk thread, so it needs to be updated. Main.Word Cruft has had to be kept as a redirect as a stopgap to keep that link from breaking.
closed Trimming the Glossary link on the sidebar
The link to the TV Tropes Glossary on the sidebar has "?from=Main.TVTropesGlossary" tacked onto the end of the link, as though the URL came from a redirect. I think it should be safe to remove the question mark and everything after it.
openBookmarking a specific post
It'd be helpful to add a feature that allows us to bookmark a certain post from a thread that we want to return to later or has important info or for whatever reason we wanna save the post. This would save a lot trying to find the specific post, esp for forgetful people like me.
Just like in Instagram and Twitter.
closed Theatre Icons
For quite a while, I have seen that the theatre namespace lacks an icon. Perhaps the comedy-tragedy mask icon could work as that is most associated with theatrical productions.
workingReviews by troper
I'd really like to have the option to search for reviews by a specific troper (just like it can be done with forum posts), so others could look up reviews from someone specific and I could know what I've already reviewed. Thank you.
Edited by Piterpicherclosed Give us the floating Heading 2 back
Since the design change around 2017, the second hierarchy heading enforces a section break which can create an awkward blank space on pages with large images. See example below for the Shutter Island page which had a much better composition in the past.
Edited by eroockopenGive indices their own icon
Indices are allowed to be used on trope pages, but they aren't supposed to be used on work pages, and there's currently no visual indicator of that like there is with other things that are forbidden from certain page types, like YMMV and Trivia items.
workingShow how often a page is actually visited/looked at
I've realized that inbounds, on the whole...aren't actually all that useful to us. They tell us what pages are linked to outside of TVT, but that's it; not what pages are the most popular to read, not how often people actually look at a page, not how often wicks get clicked on, etc. I think if we started counting a pages' actual viewcount, it'll be a lot more helpful and paint a much better picture of what pages are and aren't that popular.
Edit: Or, we can count both Inbounds and total Viewcount.
Edited by WarJay77openAdd Troper's Discussion History to the Dropdown Menu
I feel like the Page Discussions are not given much attention in my opinion, so much like the Troper Page being added on the Dropdown Menu when you click your avatar, I hope the Discussion history would be added as well hopefully.
I was going through the recent videos list and we can currently sort them into four categories: Newest, Oldest, Highest Rating, and Lowest Rating. I think it would be nice to separate this into two sort functions, one for new/old and one for high/low rating.
I would mostly like this because when I sort by either high or low, a lot of old videos show up first (they usually have the most votes, so I understand why) but it would be helpful to see, for instance, the highest rated videos that were published in the last 6 months.
