As your friendly neighborhood Admin Team, the gang here at TVTropes HQ is always working to improve the site.
Many of those improvements begin with suggestions posted right here, on the Community Wishlist. Is there a feature you really want on TVTropes? Post it.
Is there something we could be doing better? We want to know. Do you think we look fat in these pants? We were totally afraid of that. See a bug? Report it.
Important things to know:
- We're all about that content-creation life! The top contenders for our attention are ideas that'll create more content, like the video uploading feature, or speed up launching new pages. On the flip side, design or layout tweaks won't be our top priority.
- Help us dig through the goldmine of old wishlist items! If you have an old request gathering dust or spot one you're totally on board with, give it a bump and a like. There's a treasure trove of 6+ years' worth of ideas just waiting to be rediscovered. Items without enough love may not make the cut and will be closed.
- Was your wishlist item locked up without an explanation? It was most likely disapproved or just too big of a task versus the benefit it would ultimately have. Time is precious, and we want to focus on updates with the biggest bang for the buck. Don't be discouraged though! We appreciate every idea and we're always listening.
I agree that there's a problem with the current utility of the inbounds listed on related-to pages. However, I disagree that a viewcount could replace inbound counts. I've always thought the point of showing inbounds was to illustrate how much traffic a page generates for the wiki. A viewcount wouldn't do that, or at least not if it includes intra-site traffic.
For some reason, we can only see total inbounds in the history. There was a purge of the history in 2012 IIRC, so we can only see inbounds "since 2012." This number is helpful, but again there are concerns about its utility — this being 2020 and almost a decade later. It might be more useful to include inbounds "in the current year to date" in order to show active inbounds. Or scrap the 2012 information in favor of "in the last five years" as well as "in the current YTD."
I recall at least one TRS thread concerning a page from 2008 and most of its traffic was before 2012 so it seemed to have only a few inbounds despite its popularity in the anime fandom. So it isn't like showing the complete history of inbounds is sustainable anyways.
Look at all that shiny stuff ain't they prettyWell, we could do both then. Calculate both Inbounds and overall viewcount.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessI saw your inbounds Bugs post, and yeah, this is probably the natural conclusion to an issue like that.
I'd always imagined it as just a number on the related page, but if the top 50 list is easier to code and use, fine by me.

I've realized that inbounds, on the whole...aren't actually all that useful to us. They tell us what pages are linked to outside of TVT, but that's it; not what pages are the most popular to read, not how often people actually look at a page, not how often wicks get clicked on, etc. I think if we started counting a pages' actual viewcount, it'll be a lot more helpful and paint a much better picture of what pages are and aren't that popular.
Edit: Or, we can count both Inbounds and total Viewcount.
