The TVTropes Trope Finder is where you can come to ask questions like "Do we have this one?" and "What's the trope about...?" Trying to rediscover a long lost show or other medium but need a little help? Head to Media Finder and try your luck there. Want to propose a new trope? You should be over at You Know, That Thing Where.
Find a Trope:
openDoes this trope exist, and if not, can I make it a TLP?
Basically a Running Gag but only across one episode.
openPolitical Analogy
Character: "Patriotism is like alcohol. A few drinks of it won't hurt but one too many drinks will turn you into a monster.
openProtecorate: Location Query
Should Protectorate be considered a character trope and so put on there first instead of the main page?
openChekov's gun, but with words?
What is the Trope, when the Chekovs Gun is actually a word in a certain phrasing?
Like say, some characters in a game repeat certain phrases and they were in fact cognitions of other people shown later in the game. How to I call them?
openPicking Up the Sword Again Film
Older badass who has retired from fighting must return to the life of violence they’d sworn they’d left behind in order to save someone they love. See: Thief (the Michael Mann movie), Unforgiven. It is as much about accessing the killer part of their personality they had hidden away than anything else.
openFat people are nice
Is there a trope for the stereotype of fat people being nice? Santa Claus would probably be the Trope Codifier.
openNo Title
Is a harvest god a Food God or does it just go under Nature Spirit?
Edited by Pichu-kunopenTalking about the Wrong Generation
Basically what's mentioned in the title; a person complains about a generation, but the people they complain about aren't actually from that generation. I don't know if we have this.
openWe want our nice guy back!
So Bob is a Nice Guy, but people don't really like him because they think Good Is Boring. This sets him on a Darker and Edgier path — and when it's clear that he Took a Level in Jerkass, people decide that they liked him better when he was nice. Would this be a unique trope or just an inversion of We Want Our Jerk Back!?
openComfort trope
What's the nicer variant of Get A Hold Of Yourself Man? As in a character helping another pull themselves together? I've seen it before, but I can't seem to find it again.
openSanity Slippage Monologue
Do we have something like Sanity Slippage Song but involving a monologue instead? Or are those basically the same thing?
openTV Show Ghetto?
Is there a trope for when it's considered degrading for a film actor to work on tv? It's a Dead Horse Trope nowadays, but for decades it was considered outlandish for movie stars to also act for television.
openConvenient Master Switch
When the master switch (that turns on/off everything in a building, vehicle, etc) is accessible so easily, sometimes even out in the open. Commonly leads to easy sabotage or accidents.
Do we have this?
openDeep voice is evil
A character, typically a male, has a very low pitched voice and sounds evil (sometimes the character is indeed evil).
openGossip Montage Film
A series of clip meant to portray the spread of a piece of gossip, typified by 1940's housewives on phones, or in Finding Nemo, with all the sea creatures sharing the story.
openThe stoic except when this person is around Live Action TV
The edgy loner type of character who has a "thing" for a certain character (love interest) and their attitude noticeably changes when this person is around them
Edited by flipperinvader2openTiming is everything
Character: "I don't blame the guy for annoucing his retirement earlier. That's a diffult decision, man, and if he had did it back in March, people would still be mad but over time, they'll come to terms with it and move on. Timing is everything, man."
Edited by JC96openViolent relationships
Trying to find a trope where, for cultural reasons, sex and violence are intermixed. Slap-Slap-Kiss followed by Kiss-Kiss-Slap and back again, often with a side order of Destructo-Nookie.
Some event (or sometimes, a series of events) that turned an immature, more idealistic person into a more worldly one.
Do we have this?
