Find a Trope:
openIncompetent AI
An Artificial Intelligence is either incompetent, or is viewed by other people as such. At first I put those examples in a work under A.I. Is a Crapshoot but I don't feel so confident, since they're not evil. I didn't transfer them in the main trope page.
Edited by LermisopenCant save past the ending Videogame
Once you finish the game and the credits roll it takes you to the main menu, when you load your file, you start from your last save point like nothing happened
open'Power Piggybacking'
You know when a character is essentially borrowing powers/abilities from a more powerful character? Maybe Character A is a Human-shaped Soul-jar for Character B? Examples are stuff like how in the first Kingdom Hearts, most of Sora's abilities are being unconsciously drawn from Ventus or in Devil May Cry 4 Nero starts using a lot of Virgil's abilities once he gets Yamato.
openPost-apocalyptic group roles
Is there a trope for the typical roles a group would take in a post-apocalyptic setting?
The ones that immediately come to mind are things like scavengers, weaponsmith, and the like.
openNeed help troping a situation.
There is an entire scene in a novel I'm editing the page for that I was unable to apply any tropes to. Here's what happens:
The Leader discusses in his quarters the details of a recently secured alliance with the leader of another group. To ensure goodwill, he orders all his men (and women) NOT to approach the room or listen in the conversation. However, over the course of the conversation a small crowd gathers out of the door out of sheer curiosity, and when the leader finally opens the door, the rest of his Five-Man Band end up collapsed in a pile, the crowd from before nowhere to be seen. When questioned why they disobeyed his orders:
- The Big Guy / Tagalong Kid (he's really young) says that he was feeling left out and he thought that other leader was cool.
- The Lancer says that he takes no orders.
- The Chick says that she was just passing by when she saw the crowd but when The Lancer called her out she admitted that she was curious.
- The Smart Guy (and The Spock) says that he passed by to see if the order was being followed and that the crowd (except for the three above) ran off as soon as they realised he was coming.
Could you please help with all that?
Edited by LermisopenBoth Sides Want The Same Thing
Is there a trope where two factions want to accomplish the same action, but it's considered a defeat if the other side does it first? Not in the competitive sense, both want the same event to happen but want to be the ones to do it.
For example, Alice and Bob both want Charlie dead, but consider themselves the loser if Charlie is killed by the other side (or of natural causes, or by David).
In this case, Charlie is a war criminal pursued by Alice (for revenge) and Bob (Charlie's former employers). Both sides want Charlie dead, but Alice wants him tortured to death while Bob wants him publicly executed after a trial. Neither is willing to collaborate with the other, since they only want Charlie dead by their hands and he only has one life to lose.
Edited by Chabal2openWeapon of choice
A magical tool/weapon that takes on a new form depending on who wields it.
openGood Power Up Bad Power Up
Depends on the emotional state or circumstance, one might gets good power up or evil power up.
Edited by AndermannopenExtended Media Conflicts With Canon
What would be the trope for extended media clashing with what's shown in canon? For example, the RWBY image songs don't always match the cartoon's canon. It's not quite Writer Conflicts with Canon, so what is it?
openMary Sue (NaruHinaFan)
I was reading about Mary Sues, and I came to Anti-Sue, how the person is still loved even though useless, I was wondering what if anything is it when they are useless as an anti-Sue but are hated by everbody for the uselessness, but is not evil like a villian.
Edited by NaruHinaFanopenDramatic gravity reveal
A character knows that something is kind of "off" about their surroundings—most likely, they've just been through some kind of physical trauma (including a blackout) and are just waking up. They don't understand what's up until they see something like objects rolling across the seemingly flat floor, or things "dangling upwards". It's then that the character realizes that they're either upside-down, slanted, etc. In visual works, there's usually a dramatic camera movement to accompany this.
openYour Approval Fills Me With Guilt
A trope similar to Your Approval Fills Me with Shame, but instead of praise from a villain it's undeserved praise from a hero (or other respected figure) that fills the target with shame and/or guilt.
For example, Alice is being congratulated by her parents for achieving an A+ on her multiple-choice test, showing that hard work really does pay off. Alice is squirming internally because the only reason she has an A+ is that she happened to find the answer sheet and spent more time memorizing it than rereading her notes.
Or Bob is being congratulated by the chief of police for his heroism in distracting an escaped bear from a child until its handlers could tranquilize it, when Bob is the one who accidentally caused the bear to escape in the first place.
openPower of blood Literature
In October Daye, the heroine Toby has the power to increase her focus and gain a kinda boost when she consumees blood (mostly her own)
She also has the ability to discover a person's memories from tasting there blood.
Any ideas on a trope for this?
openAdvert to Enemy Mine
Is there a trope opposite of Enemy Mine. where an "enemy of my enemy is not my friend".
openWhoever-Mook Turn
Does Dressing as the Enemy include that twist where they are really working as Faceless Goons (at least at the moment)? The Reverse Mole, the hero-turned-villain, the brainwashed hero, the villain working for another villain, and so on.
Edited by MomochiopenInformed condition
An event supposedly has conditions needed to be met before it can happen, but is either never shown or is proven to be black-and-white. For example, someone bans doing things "without their permission", yet never once gave permission to do so or there are no conditions to get said permission.
Edited by MitchellProductionsopenBracelets
Is there a trope for bracelets in Merchandise-Driven series like Yokai Watch, Ben 10, and Pokemon?
I'm trying to see if this is a trope: one where a female was considered the main heroine, until subtle hints throughout the story showed someone else was all along.
