The TVTropes Trope Finder is where you can come to ask questions like "Do we have this one?" and "What's the trope about...?" Trying to rediscover a long lost show or other medium but need a little help? Head to Media Finder and try your luck there. Want to propose a new trope? You should be over at You Know, That Thing Where.
Find a Trope:
openNon-Spanish Telenovela fan
An non-Spanish character is revealed to be an avid fan of telenovelas you would see on channels like Telemundo, Univison and Televisa
openMajor side character getting abilities
Like in Buffy the Vampire Slayer for example, there's a certain character in the Scooby Gang who was a normal human being at first but then they got powers later in the series to help Buffy with her Slayer duties. What is it called when that happens?
Edited by XarvynopenCharacter awakes and realizes somebody changed their clothes for them
This awkward situation when a character awakes under an Unfamiliar Ceiling and then notices that they are either naked under the blanket or wearing unknown clothes. The implication is that whoever brought them there saw them naked.
openSeduction Ploy
A heroic character (usually female) is romantically pursued by the villain, who has captured her. Upon seeing help arrive or her own way to get out of it, she pretends to reciprocate his feelings to distract him and lower his guard.
This is not Distracted by the Sexy, as the men don't become a complete mess.
Edited by Crossover-EnthusiastopenBurglary Coverup
Is there a trope for when something bad happens (like something getting broken) and the guilty party pretends a robber took it? For example, the Community episode where Annie breaks Abed's rare DVD and pretends a burglar stole it.
openAdaptational realism
The Villain Song "Be prepared" from the Lion King has been altered from the original. Not just in the lyrics, but the visuals as well: the original had slapstick comedy over the hyenas, a parody of a Nazi parade and Scar dancing in the rocks of an erupting volcano (or something like that). It was an animated film of talking animals, so who cares, the Willing Suspension of Disbelief had a low bar anyway. The current film tries to stick to a photo-realistic design, and does away with all of that, keeping just the moon of the end of the song.
openTHAT's Your Take-away?
Alice tells Bob about her insane day, in which she went to buy a pizza only to for the shop to be robbed, her to get taken hostage and brought to the Mafia boss, only to find out one of guards was an undercover cop and the two of them worked together to expose the gangsters' drug-smuggling ring, earning her a commendation from the mayor. Whew! Crazy, right?
When she finishes her story and sits back, Bob only asks, "Why were you buying a pizza? I thought you always said pizza was unhealthy."
A trope in which a character chooses to focus on what might be a curiosity, but should be unimportant stacked up against a plethora of other, way more out there occurrences. An annoyed Alice might even ask Bob why he's worried about the pizza of all things. Do we have something that fits the bill?
I looked at Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking and Skewed Priorities, but neither of those seem quite about this specific situation. I feel like I might have seen a trope for this in the past, but if so, I can't remember what it is. I've seen this happen in multiple works, though.
openHigh-numbered element
SF uses high-numbered elements as Applied Phlebotinum or Green Rocks for their works. These are real elements, but science doesn't know their properties yet, so the work has free reign to make up whatever they want, at the cost of eventually inevitably getting marched on by science.
I swear we had a trope for this.
openMakeup Makes You Look Better
A female character who doesn't wear much (if any) makeup, actually looks better in makeup like this example◊ involving the Title Character from Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid
openLooking over the shoulder shot
A character, usually a villain, is shown from behind while looking over their shoulder at the reader.
Edited by 005131openWeird vision
This is when what a character sees normally is fundamentally different than what everyone else sees. The reference is from Ennui GO!, where one character, from an outside perspective, sees the world as if he's on a constant acid trip, but to him it's just reality and he has no idea that anybody sees the world differently.
openDeserving Victim
A situation where a character is deemed to have deserved whatever it is they're a victim of, not because of their Jerkass behavior as in Asshole Victim, but usually their own stupidity.
For example, a Phony Psychic conman who justifies his taking money from people as "they should know better" (and he only targets extremely rich people), a young adulterous couple justifying it as the woman's husband being impotent, etc.
openDifferent for Everyone
On my Supernatural Sensation TLP draft, someone asked about polyjuice potion, which takes on different qualities depending on the person the potion is made to copy. It doesn't fit my idea, but it would fit a trope where something takes on unique qualities depending on the person involved, so is there anything like that?
open'Curing' Trans Characters
Is there a trope that covers the stereotype that trans men are just gender-confused women with internalized misogyny? The closest I can think of is Cure Your Gays.
openDubstep laser
Beam weapons that make a droning sound while fired. Usually, the pitch of the sound is inversely proportional to the diameter of the beam fired - Piddly Eye Beams will get a high-pitched "EEEEEEEE" sound, while a big Wave-Motion Gun might have a bass-y "BWAAAAH" sound. Also, the pitch might increase as the weapon is charging up, but abruptly decrease when it fires.
Edited by phalanxopenSuperheroes named after pop culture things..
Superheroes named after pop culture things... Do we have that trope?
I can't find it at a glance in Naming Conventions... Haven't tried Shout-Outs Index, though.
Example:
- Literature.Whateley Universe: Palantir and Madame Osgiliath, referencing Literature. The Lord Of The Rings things relating to their powers of crystal ball summoning and precognition, respectively.
openBastard who is good person
Character is thief, criminal etc, but he is really good person with clean heart.
openThe guy who puts you into trials
Bob wants to get/do X. But first, Charlie gives him some trials before Bob can do X.
Common in heroic stories, to prove Bob's strength/character/etc.
Do we have this "Charlie" figure?
Two brothers work for their family business and work quite well with neither man wanting full control of the business. Even they quipped about not engaging in a sibling rivalry
