A tantō is like somewhere between a sword and a dagger. They were mostly carried by samurai. Admittedly, they weren’t particularly interesting as far as swords and daggers go. It was sometimes used for jigai, which is like seppuku but for samurai wives. But since Mitsukuri was a samurai, she got to do the standard seppuku after failing to protect her family.
