Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

[tup] Jeff. I also recall there was a character from K. Banning Kellum's series I wanted to bring up in October, I'm just not caught up.

[tup] Hunac Ceel and Jeffrey

I think I have found another villain that`s listed as a CM that should be removed from the category.

What`s the work?

Angst is an Austrian horror film from 1983 where the protagonist and narrator is a serial killer who has just been released from prison. The villain I want to discuss is this serial killer in question.

What has he done? This is his current entry:

The unnamed narrator is an antisocial, thrill-seeking loner who can only achieve physical gratification through murder. A sadist since he was a child, he murdered his abusive mother at the age of 17 and an elderly woman when he was released from prison. Following his second release, he tried to strangle a taxi driver and invaded a home when his plan failed, drowning a disabled man and stabbing his sister to death. Wanting to kill multiple people at once, he stopped by a gas station and planned on killing everyone inside before his arrest, not resisting solely because his crimes would make him famous.

Why I think we should look at him again?

Throughout the film it is mentioned multiple times that the killer has had a horrible childhood because his entire family had been abusive to him (his mother, his sister, his grandmother and his stepfather). His mother and sister didn`t love him and tormended him, his mother frequently locked him in the basement, his fanatical grandmother wanted him to become a priest and when he was expeled from the monastery for killing a pig, she sent him to his abusive stepfather who regularly beat him. While this is not shown in the film, the killer narrates his life and there is enough evidence that he had a horrible childhood.

Aside from that, when he breaks into the house of the family, they remind him of his own abusive family. He also attempts to strangle the taxi driver because she reminds him of his first girlfriend. These two instances show that his abusive background still affects him.

Even the film itself acknowledges that the reason why he kills is because of his horrible upbringing because the movie ends with a voice-over of a medical record declaring that the killer was driven by a sadistic tendency caused by his unstable childhood and he is locked up in jail in perpetuity.

Conclusion

I will leave it up to you.

Strongly leaning cut there for the Angst keeper.

Well it sounds like all that might have messed him a bit to much so I'm going to give a [tdown] to the unnamed narrator.

ACW: Actually on reflection for Dawson's entry, if its not going to list his murders, could you either amend or cut the line "he killed numerous people in brutal fashion". It feels kind of redundant with the line before that being "going on a killing spree with his signature being torture".

If the film treats him as too affected by the abuse, I agree with a cut.

I've seen that movie and I had a serious "wtf is wrong with this scumbag" reaction, and though I remember very little of the movie itself except for my aforementioned reaction and being worried about the dachshund, if his reaction was a case of a trigger, then I'll say cut.

@Acw: This part in Ivanovic's entry isn't actually true technically "After discovering Mina's mother had married a commoner,"

Mina's Dad is revealed to not be a commoner. Tepes is the evil creator and God of the entire vampire race. Ivanovic and crew weren't aware of that. But it still is incorrect as stated so change it to "After believing Mina's mother had married a commoner"

He likely deserves to get Adaptational Villainy in the entry given the usual Jeff portrayal has either his Freudian Excuse of being driven to insanity or his Wouldnt Harm A Child (well, baby) honour code

Who wants another sherlock Holmes example?

Whats the work?

Moriarty is a 2011 comic by Image comics focusing on the one and only professor James Moriarty.

This one comes from the first arc in it "The Black Chamber", It is 1914 and World war 1 approaches, Moriarty having survived Reichenbach now lives in a world where Holmes has seemingly passed on and feels his life is empty without his archenemy. Things change though when he gets asked by the government to take on a case to find Mycroft Holmes leading him to come into contact with this fellow.

Who is Tartarus ?

Real name Gothfried, Tartarus is an anarchist terrorist who wants to reduce the world to chaos so he can rule the ashes. Tartarus to start his scheme assinates Archiduke Feridnand kicking off world war one using a cabal called the black dawn. You see Tartarus has created a machine which creates psychoactive visions of the future and has caused Mycroft to investigate him. Mycroft dissapeed so an agent named John Smith asked Moriarty to look into it. Moriarty infilitrates a gala hosted by the black dawn and finds that their working with a scientist named Johnathan who created the "Black Chamber" and its ability to see the future. Smith ends up murdered by Tartarus and force moriarty to ally with his old ally and girlfriend Jade.

They make their way to the headquarters of the black dawn and disover their members dead. You see Tartrus showed them the black chamber while not revealing what it does. The human mind cant take the visions so it drives the people who see them insane and causes them to mutilate and kill themselves. Meeting up with Watson as part of a truce, Watson reveals that Tartarus intneds to release the black chamber on London, ripping the city to pieces as a demonstration. Tartrus plans to sell it all sides in the coming war and watch as Europe rips itself apart.

Anyway they find the scientist Johnathan whose very emaciated who reveals that Tartarus forced him to make it. Anyway Moriarty confronts Tartrus who reveals that he views himself to be a god who will stand over and rule the ashes of a destroyed europe building it in his image. The two engage with Wtason and Lestrade as back up, taking on Tartrus's goons. Moriarty and Tartrus and Tarturus is mortally wounded who activates a bomb to try and take him with him but moriarty escapes

Redeeming Qualities?

Nope. Hes a creepy chaos worshipper who plans to level Europe for his god complex. He's pretty lucid and smart too so no insanity issues

Heinous standard

He started world war 1 and plans to drive the entirety of Europe insane starting with london. Millions of lives will be lost. Easy ,easy pass
