Webcomic / What Nonsense

Go To

What Nonsense is a Slice of Life Furry Webcomic. It has been online since 2008, and has been irregularly updated since. The story focuses on Pike Swinson, a Workaholic boar who was sent to a remote vacation home for a break. Nothing is as it seems, as every character has a Dark and Troubled Past, and there may be things Swinson doesn't know about himself.

What Nonsense provides examples of the following tropes:

  • Aerith and Bob: The comic features normal names, like Eustace and Martha, as well as lesser-seen ones like Mathilde, and made-up ones like "Roofadoodle Draboosternunny".
  • Butt-Monkey: Roofadoodle tends to be on the receiving end of many of the Slapstick jokes, especially when he tries hitting on Mathilde.
  • Cartoon Creature: While most of the characters have clearly-defined species, nobody knows what species Roofadoodle is.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Many of the characters have rather dark pasts. For example, Mathilde was born out of wedlock, and grew up hating her mother. Being forced to hide away and move from school to school, Mathilde lost many of her friends.
  • From the Mouths of Babes: Eustace is prone to saying things an 8-year-old child probably wouldn't, whether he's swearing at Zimmelman, talking about his knowledge of more mature subjects, or asking Swinson what it feels like to kill.
  • Interspecies Romance: Eustace's father is a koala, while his mother is a monkey. Eustace inherited traits from both. The romance is shunned by society, however, causing Eustace's parents to divorce.
  • Last-Name Basis: Swinson tends to go by his last name. This may stem from his much-loved time at the office.
  • Mood-Swinger: Mathilde has a rather mean temper, which can often result in her attacking others and running away. However, she always manages to calm down after some time.
  • Napoleon Delusion: Zimmelman believes himself to be the reincarnation of Napoleon Bonaparte.
  • Offing the Offspring: A mother, who is implied to be Martha, throws her own child off a bridge in the prologue.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Eustace wants to impress his father, who he rarely sees. This results in him wanting to learn about things way above what a normal child his age would, which eventually gets rather dark.
  • World of Funny Animals: The comic takes place in a world populated by anthropomorphic hogs, kangaroos, koalas, whatever Roofadoodle is, and more.
  • Workaholic: Swinson likes working more than anything else, and is only at the Nawnscentz house on his boss's request. Gradually, he starts trying to have fun normally.
