Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

I know it seems pretty silly by now for a work like Regular Show to have a CM, given how comically over the top everything is, but i've been thinking about this one-off guy and he's honestly pretty terrible by RS standards.

What's the Work

Season 4's episode, That's My Television, where Mordecai and Rigby meet R Gb 2, a talking tv set and the star of a popular 80's sitcom. The pair are thrilled to meet him at first, but then RG reveals his life as a star is terrible, and all he wants is to escape into the real world. That's where his producer comes in.

Who Is He?

The unnamed Network executive overseeing RGB 2 is a greedy, ruthless man who refuses the little robot freedom abusing his contract keep him under his thumb as his personal cash cow, and treats him like personal property. When our furry duo help RG escape the studio, the producer flies into a rage and signals a squad of armed henchmen to pursue the trio, hellbent on recapturing the talking TV. When one of his men questions why to take RG alive, the producer shouts back, "Because he's a television icon! He doesn't deserve freedom! He deserves to MAKE ME MONEY!" They chase bird, raccoon, and robot to a highway outside the studio, with multiple armed forces opening fire on their van just to recapture a little talking box. RGB 2 fights some of the mooks off with projectile "air from the 80's" which he apparently needs to survive. Remember that, now.

Eventually the three are cornered on a bridge between both the studio's forces and a mob of raging RGB2 fans who want the autographed boxset they have. The producer steps out to sarcastically congratulate the Park Duo for their efforts, before introducing a heavily armed to the teeth mook and making this little speech:

Bravo, Gentlemen, bravo. That was a pretty nice PG-13 getaway. Way to reach out to the 18 to 35 demographic. Oh and nice third act climax by the way. The helicopter explosion really tied it all up with a cherry on top. We just have a couple of notes for you. Y'see, our research groups show that no-one wants to see the good guys win these days. And unfortunately for you, we spend millions trying to rectify this situation. Let's just say we found an effective solution. Our focus groups studied everything boys ages 9 to 14 find the most brutal and destructive. I suggest you turn your engine off and step out of your vehicle. Unless of course, you'd like to be annihilated.

When Mordecai and Rigby are captured along with RGB 2, the Producer tells his men to "cancel" them meaning he's going to murder them anyway for the trouble they've caused. Fortunately Rigby sics a horde of rabid fans on the goons with the "That's My Television" boxset, allowing the trio to escape. Furious, the Producer jumps into the back of their van and screams, "You can't get away,RGB 2! I OWN YOU!" RGB 2 responds "OWN THIS!" and sends him and his men flying out of the van with the last supply of 80's air, causing an explosion that presumably kills the evil producer and knocks the van onto a passing barge and to freedom.

Soon, the three reach RGB 2's dream destination, the Pine Mountains, which turn out to be just a billboard advertising a ski resort. RGB 2 is happy anyway, which says a lot just how much of a prisoner he was in stardom.

And while the producer has mostly just been a standard asshole villain, the following reveal pushes him into true evil.

RGB 2 has Mordecai and Rigby remove his screen so he can watch the sunset with his real eyes. Y'see, RG isn't a robot TV at all, but a human who has been sealed in his suit for god knows how long to continue That's My Television running. Beneath the suit is a naked, shriveled, barely mobile husk of a man, withered by years of imprisonment in a tiny box and only able to survive on cans of 80's air because he can't breath outside air anymore. This actor was all but Made a Slave, solely to satisfy the greed of Network Executives who wanted to force him to keep a Sitcom running. He was treated like property for so long, just seeing a billboard with mountains was enough to make him happy. And if you believe Regular Show lines up with current time, he's been trapped in that suit for years.

Heinousness

The Park crew have faced pretty much everything imaginable and most of their foes are either so over-the-top it's hard to take them seriously, or still have some redeeming qualities in spite of being world-destroying lunatics. This guy is evil on a more human scale. He isn't an Omnicidal Maniac or anything, but he's still a cruel, abusive psychopath who held one of his actors in a tiny prison for decades, reducing him to a malnourished husk that can only live on canned air, and is perfectly fine with killing anyone who threatens his scheme. All for the sake of lining his pockets. While similar plots have happened over the course of the series, with robots who tried to force Muscle Man into powering their company, or Pops being forced to replace a rapidly aged Studio head, the antagonist is the corporate entity itself rather than an individual. The Producer is the sole Big Bad here, and everything is to satisfy his bottomless greed. He's like the Night Owl somewhat, but he might be even worse, because he's more explicitly murderous and is knowingly trapping an innocent man in a torturous prison, compared to being unconscious and frozen.

Also, aside from that above speech, there's nothing played for comedy about him. Mordecai and Rigby are visibly disturbed to discover what he did to poor RGB 2, and given how desperate RG is to escape, it's safe he wasn't treated well at all. He may only have one victim, but what that victim suffered is certainly cruel by this show's standards.

Conclusion

Even so, i'm hesitant to include this guy. If he were a villain in something like Black Mirror, he could be a contender but it's hard to tell in a fantastical series like this.

Slight [tup] to Sadie and a stronger one to Naraku.

[tdown] to the RGB2 executive. Even disregarding the wacky tone of the show, what he does to RGB2 is a Moral Event Horizon, but not heinous enough to make him qualify for me.

@Snoketrope: Happy late birthday to you as well and good luck to whatever real life challenges you are facing right now.

Duck? You don't have to vote, but wording it like that is extremely rude to someone who took the time to do it. Obvious yea to Naraku and to Sadie.

Not to my knowledge on Gaslight.

Saying no to the Regular Show baddie...the show has a surprisingly high standard and just the one victim...isn't cutting it for me. And of course, happy bday to Library and good to see you back, Kylo! Hope you're keeping wel!
