Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

I found another unapproved Complete Monster entry, this time on one of the characters sub-pages for the Marvel Cinematic Fanfiction Universe. The entry refers to Ultron, and I took the liberty of cutting it. I also linked to the thread and PM'd the person who added it, who also seems to be the author, letting them know about the standard vetting procedure. Here's the entry in question:

  • Complete Monster: The closest Ultron gets to any redeeming quality is that he doesn't kill Supergiant-842667 for her failure.

[tup] to Bean

Okay, so I just watched an episode from Law & Order: Criminal Intent and I may have a potential candidate. Since Criminal Intent has been discussed I’ll get straight to the candidate. Appearing in in season 9 episode, "Abel & Willing" Dr. Abel Hazard.

Who Is He? What Has He Done?

Dr. Abel Hazard is a psychologist who kidnaps innocent loving couples and strap them into chair to experiment on where he drugs and tortures them before forcing them to either kill each other or themselves, out of a twisted assumption that humans are willing to kill each other to save themselves.

Abel has already done this to eleven couples in five cities, with ten out of the eleven couples being force to kill their spouses while the one spouses choosing to kill herself so the other may live, with the surviving spouses being traumatized with what they have done and going to prison for it.

After the latest surviving spouse gets interviewed by Detective Zach Nichols, Zach goes to Abel’s homes discovers his torture chamber and all of the couples that Abel has kidnapped and imprisoned before having them kill each other, where Zach would then arrest Abel for his atrocities

Freudian Excuse? Redeeming Qualities?

So, Abel’s reason for conducting these horrific experiments and murder stems from his beliefs that humans a the very core have no goodness and willing to screw and kills others for their own benefit, having been told by his father that Abel’s grandparents were forced to make that decision by Nazis during WWII.

Abel himself did not seem to care about their grandparents suffering and Abel basically lived a normal life who was rather fascinated this concept than disgusted and willing to subject numerous innocent couples to these same horrific experiments just to suffice his curiosity and Hazard even says to Abel, that he’s no better than the Nazis.

There’s no other excuse for his atrocities, while Abel himself lived a normal life without any suffering, while he never showed any care or love for his father and grandparents and the victims left alive are left completely broken and traumatized being forced to kill there loved ones, much to Abel’s pleasure.

Heinousness

Given that Criminal Intent is part of the same universe with all other Law & Order shows, including the SVU where rape is common, I would say that the heinous standard is relatively high.

That said, I’d say that Abel is unique enough to stand out given that he kidnaps numerous innocent and happy couples to experiment on, which involves drugging and torturing them for hours or even days, before forcing them to kill each other or he would kill themselves, and the victims that he spared are left completely broken and traumatized and sent to prison.

Final Verdict

I’ll leave it to you guys to decide

Yes to Sawney.

As for Hazard...are we SURE what happened to his grandparents didn't warp him?

Abel's father explained to him that Abel's grandfather was forced by the the Nazi's to shoot his wife or else they would shoot him and his father, that he developed the belief the humans in their core have no goodness and are utterly selfish, though I don't this excuses him Abel in the least since he had a relatively normal childhood and life without any suffering having been raised by his father and his theory was already disproved when one of the couples chose to kill herself so that her husband could survive, but still chose to commit his murders out of spite.

Eh, I'll give a cautious yes then Hazard then. Played by the same guy who played SVU's Greg Yates incidentally.

[up] say I wonder who watched all the episodes Yates was? I know that he appears in both SVU and Chicago PD and we’ve mentioned him many times here, and he seems like he could count, yet we have never gave him a formal EP

I've not seen the eps, though while I think Yates is probably heinous enough, this from his character page—assuming it's accurate—disqualifies him:

  • Morality Pet: His fiancée Susie Frain is this to him. Despite her matching his victim preference to a T, he has never harmed her once during the 20 years they've been together. When Carl Rudnick kills Susie, Yates is legitimately dismayed by this, especially after finding out Susie was pregnant.

I've only seen his Chicago pd episodes where he's a real scumbag so sadly can't help you on that one on whether it's true.

BTW, for books that are part of series, we alphabetize by book title, unless more than one book has a CM, right? For example, the Nazi Hunter duo goes under N, unless Second World gets a second CM. Septimus asked about that, and I want to make sure I'm not going crazy.

EDIT: Also, what's the vote for DDD's quote on Bile?

[tup] Dr. Abel Hazard.

  • Hades Project Zeorymer: Masaki is the mastermind behind the events of the series and the creator of the titular Zeorymer. Formerly a scientist for a secret organization who planned to betray them, Masaki creates his own clone as the pilot of the Zeorymer, and uploads his memories to the Zeorymer before his eventual death and implants them inside his clone Masato Akitsu in the future. He was trying to overwrite the clone's personality and happily uses Zeorymer's power without caring about the cities caught in the crossfire.
    • Manga: Masaki Wakatsuki betrayed his partners before his death, creating clones of himself and his partner's wife before dying. Years later, when his clone Masato pilots his masterpiece Zeorymer to fight against the organization Nematodo, Wakatsuki's memories take over his mind. Later he rapes Miku, the clone of his partner's wife, while commenting how he cannot understand why her adoptive father never raped her. When Masato attacks Nematodo's headquarters in a attempt to destroy Zeorymer, it's revealed that Wakatsuki used a prototype of Zeorymer to resuscitate himself in a flawed body and take control of Nematodo by killing their leader. While fighting Masato, Wakatsuki wants to take over his body. When he is outsmarted and defeated by his clone, Wakatsuki tries to activate the self destruction of the world-destroying machine inside Miku before being killed, which triggers the self destruction of Nematodo's base in an explosion capable of destroying the world. A petty megalomaniac, Wakatsuki would destroy the planet rather than accept his defeat.
    • OVA Adaptation: Masaki Kihara creates the mechas for the organization Hau Dragon as well as the Artificial Humans to pilot them before betraying the Hau Dragon to steal the Zeorymer and dying. Years later, when his clone Masato Akitsu pilots the Zeorymer, Masaki's memories start to take control of the clone's body during his combats against the pilots of the Hau Dragon. During these fights, Masaki exploits their genetically designed emotional flaws to happily kill them without caring about the civilians caught in the crossfire. After taking near-complete control over Masato's body, Masaki stops to pilot the Zeorymer, tries to rape his creation Miku and tells her about his plans to allow the vengeful Hau Dragon to destroy the world, knowing that he will rule by using another clone inside the organization if they win.

So lately I've been replaying Gun and as I near the end of the game, I'm back to wondering if Reverend Reed still counts ? Or if a third character is worth discussing (Hollister)

Sure he's a sadistic, murdering, misogynistic Sinister Minister and all, but the thing is...I think he falls flat in comparison to his boss Magruder, especially with one of Magruder's other Co-Dragons, Sergent Hollister.

Yes, Reed instigates the steamboat massacre, and yes he personally murders Cole's ostensible love interest Jenny, but those two instances he was acting under Magruder. In fact these are about the only instances of Reed's onscreen villainy. The bulk of his time is spent being a sniveling rat Magruder is giving his orders too...or cutting an ear off.

I could buy the steamboat massacre for Reed if it was something he came up with or a situation that he got out of hand...but later in the game we find out the massacre was ordered by Sergeant Hollister - who to add insult to injury ends up having a higher onscreen body count despite shorter screen time.

Honestly I thought about doing an EP for Hollister himself, but even then I find it's the same issue as Reed, in that too much of what he's doing is under/for Magruder.

"It's like...a cliff, and if I do it, I'm just gonna...fall." "I think we're already falling."
