Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Wait, so, in a family friendly work, if a villain tries to do things that are truly in the Moral Event Horizon territory but not much attention is drawn to them and they're not treated either any worse or less bad than their other crimes, this thread treats them no differently than the characters In-Universe treat them? Huh. Didn't know that.

As for the other images... Second Pan could work but I still prefer the Lucinda one. Probably because I'm biased tongue. (As I love attractive evil queen C Ms) That and one panel is already enough to illustrate her cruelty compared to Pan. As for the Vapour Lord... Not sure because I'm afraid if 5P would smite the image but lean weak keep as well.

[tup] to Kermes, Karpan and The Rake.

That's 10 [tup] for Johnny, I'll get started on his write up. I also feel a bit daft for forgetting to include the fact most antagonists don't kill more than two people.

Thanks for publicising that necessary detail Mir.

I like all the Grimm images except the first Pan one. For the Grimm Fairy Tales page, I vote for Lucinda's image.

Gonna say "no" to KH!Scar after reading the opinions of TommyFresh, Lightysnake, and finalsurvivor1.

I like either Vapor Lord's image or Lucinda's. Honestly, Vapor Lord's doesn't strike me as worse than the image at Literature or Hellraiser.

Pan quote works.

I'll request page locking Tuesday unless there are any other candidates you have pending.

One last thing about Scar: While his crimes from the film alone aren't enough and his attempted cannibalism of Sora and killing of a pregnant Nala are sort of glanced over, what about his attempt to plunge his world into darkness upon becoming a Heartless and his merging of his ghost avatars to create a giant monster that would rampage about and destroy the area? Those are his two biggest crimes in the game. If this point can be argued against, I will drop the discussion on him.

For the first point, Scar himself never mentions plunging the world into darkness. That's Pete that says Scar's going to do that, and one of the main things about KH Pete is his uncanny ability to command Heartless without ill effects from the required darkness. We don't get to see if he's able to do it with Scar since Scar's killed right after, but given Pete's also very arrogant and not bright at all, I'd still attribute that more to Pete assuming he has command of Scar now.

For the second? Groundshaker does nothing at all beyond just being a Heartless boss. It's a fusion of the Scar ghosts, yes, but Groundshaker is barely treated as an extension of Scar beyond being born from said fusion. It's really just another generic Heartless at that point.

Okay so if we are considering cutting any more from the Assassins Creed franchise, there is one more that had me thinking, Podarkes the Cruel from Odyssey. Basically what makes him stand out is that he murdered his own lover and tried to murder his own daughter several times and fed two boys to their parents farm animals. However the latter crime was mentioned by Barnabas. I'm not sure if that would affect his standing as a CM perhaps not as he's a minor Arc Villain with limited screen time and lesser resources than most of his allies but still comes across as awful, but I thought that's worth mentioning.

Yea... I wasn't sure with Podakres either...Given he's on the same setting with Chrysis and if you took the franchise as a whole, when you have The Embalmer and Jeffers... Yea. Cut away

Although he has a cool name tho ngl

One more for tonight before I get to some others, like one Kamen Rider examle...

Whats the work?

The Handmaiden is a 2016 film by Park Chan-wook of Oldboy fame. The plot? Korea has been annexed by Japan, and a conman has styled himself as 'Count Fujiwara', hoping to make it big. He recruits a young pickpocket and conwoman named Sook-hee....the mark? Lady Hideko, niece of a major collaborator named Kouzuki. Fujiwara will seduce Hideko, marry her, they'll toss her into a madhouse, have sook-hee take her identity and they'll run off with her money...Fujiwara is actually conning both of them, promising Hideko some freedom and they'll have Sook-hee pose as her, chuck her in the nuthouse and run off together with the money...

Things go for a loop...when Sook-hee and Hideko begin falling in love with one another. You may think the scoundrel Fujiwara is our proposal, but in truth...let's talk Hideko's uncle Kouzuki.

Who is Kouzuki?

Kouzuki is the man helping Japan to annex Korea (the tropes page states 'think a French Jew helping the Nazis take over so he can become a naturalized German for how vile Korean audiences would see this move)....he also had Hideko's mother committed, where she later died, and has proven a horrifically abusive scumbag ever since, calling Hideko a 'rotten bitch' when she spoke out of turn, beating her and pressing her under his thumb.

But more than that, Kouzuki is a revolting pervert who lusts after Hideko, and makes no secret of it, openly traumatizing her from an early age. Hideko's only solace is Kouzuki's wife, her aunt, who is her protector. Finally, her aunt decides to take Hideko and free, but....kills herself first, hanging herself from a tree. Even from a young age, it's clear to Hideko...Kouzuki murdered her and posed it as a suicide. More than this? He forces Hideko, just as he forced his wife, to participate in erotic prose readings to Japanese audiences, to act them out, etc, which is twisted at best, from an early age. He plans to force Hideko to marry him to rape her at last, as he's been hungering for in the course of well over fifteen years.

Fujiwara throws a wrench in that plan, as does Sook-hee....now, Hideko? Fujiwara wins her trust by giving her a vile of painless poison with the promise that drinking it will kill her quick and painless, because if Kouzuki gets her...it's a trip to the basement.

Kouzuki's little hobby? His basement has been converted to a dungeon and torture chamber. When he's not sexually exploiting and abusing his niece in every way he can without actually laying a finger on her? Kouzuki brings people to the dungeon and dissects them, with even an octopus there (do the math). ...he keeps jars full of bodyparts all around, including private parts. Both men and women, btw.

Now, Sook-hee and Hideki get the better of their tormentors and manage to jump ship and flee...Fujiwara is taken by a furious Kouzuki who ties him in the torture chamber and carves off all the fingers on one hand, drilling a hole in the other as he presses him for details about the wedding night with Hideko...commenting he's sealed the ports off for two women traveling together. He's going to catch them, torture Hideko and Sook-hee together and make a new book with their and Fujiwara's flayed skin. Fujiwara begs for a cigarette to remember and Kouzuki lets him smoke two...Fujiwara? Tells him to go fuck himself as "Hideko is my wife. What scoundrel brags about his own wedding night?" Kouzuki then goes to get a pair of shears to cut Fujiwara's privates off.

....those cigarettes? Are laced with mercury in gas form. Poison. Fujiwara breathes it all out little by little, and the basement has no windows...Kouzuki begins to suffocate and collapses, Fujiwara mentally wishing the ladies well and wryly comments "Least I'm dying with my cock," before dying with Kouzuki.

Hideko and Sook-hee? Have escaped, as one was disguised as a guy. With all the money, they're headed for a new life in Shanghai, happy, together, and free

Heinousness?

Worst in story. Easily and clearly, no question. Kouzuki is a pervert, sexual abuser, torturer, murderer and all around scumbag in every single imaginable capacity.

In terms of the baseline? I think he makes it. Now, a Korean guy helping Japan to annex Korea would be seen as abominable by the audience, but more than that? We see what he does in the basement, see his trophies, we know he murdered his aunt and he torments poor Hideko for years. Taken all together, I think Kouzuki passes, and we see his pattern when he begins slowly torturing Fujiwara.

Mitigating Qualities?

He says himself: "I'm just an old man who likes dirty stories." He cares for nothing and nobody, lusting after his niece, sexually exploits her and his own wife, whom he murders. The only bit of humanity to him? He despises being Korean and wants to become a naturalized Japanese citizen, with a love for Japanese and English culture. This is not, for obvious reasons, portrayed as sympathetic or mitigating at all.

Even Fujiwara proves he has some honor in the end (it turns out Hideko stone-walled him on the wedding night and refused to let him touch her....he didn't push her on it), but he dies seemingly wishing the women well, for all a scoundrel he's been to that point, one cannot doubt the way he chooses to make his exit. Kouzuki? Nothing.

Conclusion?

Not the baddest of the bunch but certainly one of the most vile for me in a while. A disgusting, revolting old pervert who's horrible with every moment.

[tup] to Kouzuki.

Okay how does this look:

  • I Know What You Did Last Wednesday: The killer Johnny Nadler, a former school friend of Tim’s and a bitter loser who, following ten years after graduation of always coming in second, irrationally blames their former friends for their own failures and decided to murder them all. First murdering their best friend Rory McDougle by cutting him into multiple pieces then luring the other seven to Rory’s private island, which they had rigged with remote control traps, and began picking them off in manners that represented the school subject they had surpassed the killer in method’s including poison, impaling and being crushed to death. Upon failing to make their final intended victim, Tim, fall to his death upon the jagged sea needles, the Killer confronts Tim and Nick at gunpoint and admitted to have enjoyed their killing spree, before trying to murder them both.

What do you think? I know its a tad awkward to read, but I felt the need to preserve the twist.
