Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Okay, some more quotes:

"I doubt I need an introduction, but just in case, I am the mighty Frieza and yes, all the horrible stories you've heard are true."
—-Frieza, Dragon Ball Z, "Namek's Defense"

Belongs under Card-Carrying Villain most likely.

"It would appear that I still have a bit of humanity left within me... I'll just have to rid myself of it!"

Ragyo Kiryuin, Kill la Kill

Probably falls under Lack of Empathy more.

Tenma: You can't just go around killing!
Johan: Why not?
—-Johan Liebert expressing his utter lack of empathy, Monster

Possibly belongs under For the Evulz, or the above mentioned trope.

"I play the game of genocide."
—-Crayak, Animorphs

Unsure where this one should go.

[up]Bell also voiced, ironically enough, Duke from GI Joe.

As for what he did, I'll need to rewatch his special (again, have the Shout Factory DVD), but his crimes include "attempt to banish Ponyland's entire pony population to a desolate alternate dimension and enslave literally everyone else".

Alright, added Lavan to the draft page.

I post this because i need to get this out of my system.

What's the Work

"Painkiller Jane vs The Darkness" is non-canon crossover between "The Darkness" and "Painkiller Jane". The premise is both Jackie Estacado (protagonist of "The Darkness") and Jane are hunting down one con man Terrence J. Flannery, who conned them both in one way or another. As Terrence was attacked by gang of pissed off ninja, for conning them too, he is saved by mysterious woman called "The Striper", who drive him to her house. There he find some horrible secret.

My candidate is "The Stripper" herself.

Who is He/What Has He Done

"The Stripper" introduced by picking up Terrence on the street, saving him from bunch of angry ninja. Losing them on the way, "The Stripper" invites him to her house and offers him to sit, asking if anyone knows or cares to find him in her house. Excited Terrence, thinking that she would offer him her services as a striper, answers "no" and sit on a chair, only for handcuffs to lock him there. It was in this moment "The Stripper" reveals that "she's not that kind of striper" and show off her closed, full off removed human skin. There she prepares to fill him up full of pain-killers, so that he could watch her "strip" him and wonders which part of him she's gonna "strip" first. As Painkiller Jane and Estacado track down Terrence in her house, they see him still alive with most of his skin removed as he begs them to save him. Then "The Stripper" attacks them and managed to wound Jane and Estacado, but because of Estacado's healing powers (which he gets from "Darkness" that inhabits him) he was able to quickly regenerate and use his powers to kill "The Stripper".

Freudian Excuse/Mitigating Factors

I don't know how much sanity requires to count for this trope, that's why I hesitated to bring her before. She's clearly sane enough to develop plans to capture her victims, she asked Terrence (before capturing him) if someone is going to look for him (showing that she knows what she's doing is wrong) and she is quite sadistic. Among her victims she is mentioned "Doctor Brown, who had to admit that I'm not REALLY mad", so I don't know if it counts for something, even though that line delivered without providing any context for if he was her doctor or he was just one of her victims, who happens to be a doctor and who called her mad in the heat of the moment.

Heinous Standard

For 1 issue non-canon work she easily passes. Around a dozen victims, killed in extremely sadistic way, by removing their skin, while their alive. She mentioned killing this way her parents, some doctor, pizza guy, some poor vomiting man and "all those hehehe other people".

Final Verdict

I'm interested what other people think.

VVV, you say non-canon, right? So she can just go to the main comics page.

BTW, we still need to create a Creator.Top Cow Productions Creator page so the Shared Universe can get its own page.

"Top Cow Productions" was created by artists, who left "Image Comics" to "try their luck" so to say. They have some partnership in business and "Top Cow" picked up some unfinished projects or bought off rights to some of "Image Comics" properties (like Cyberforce, which they bought after 1 volume was finished) and that's pretty much all connections they have.

[tup] Stripper (but I don't even know her)

Here's a project I've been wanting to do since September of 2018. Laziness has been preventing me from completing this little EP project of mine, and today, I have decided to finally complete it once and for all.

What Is the Work?

Syphon Filter is a series of games by Eidetic that started in 1999 and has concluded in 2007. The series followed the shadow (moses) of Metal Gear Solid, with its somewhat stealth gameplay, and its plot involving a government conspiracy. The series is often paired with both Metal Gear and the Splinter Cell series as the trifecta of stealth games (at least from the early 2000's), with protagonist Gabe Logan even getting a namedrop in MGS3.

The series concerns the titular Syphon Filter virus, which is programed to affect specific groups such as ethnicities, demographics, and continents. Think of it like Foxdie, except worse. It’s up to Agency agents Gabriel “Gabe” Logan and Lian Xing to stop the virus, halt the conspiracy, and take down its shadowy organization... the Agency. Dun Dun!

I have 3 candidates from the series. If there are more, I will post them at a later date, but given the high heinous standard of the series, who knows?

Who Is he?

Erich Rhoemer is the African-German terrorist leader of the Black Baton, an organization involved in terrorism and other illegal activities. With news of his actions reaching Russian assassin wild card Mara Aramoc and Pharcom, the makers of the virus, they decided to hire him to work for them, with Erich joining the Syphon Filter project as a way to use the virus for his own benefits.

He serves as the ultimate threat of the first game, while also appearing in flashbacks in the third game leading up to the events of the first game.

What has he done?

Born in Leipzig, Germany in 1964, much of Rhoemer’s early life is shrouded in mystery, however he eventually became a terrorist, becoming responsible for various attacks throughout the world. He gained enough power to start his own organization called the Black Baton, which would employ thousands of criminals and mercenaries to work towards his goals. The earliest recorded date to their existence is 1994 (with Mara Aramov's involvement), however it is possible that the organization has existed for longer. As a terrorist, he was responsible for hijacking an airplane from the Gulf Airlines in Istanbul, Turkey during the year of 1995. He was later responsible for a bombing on the Comms Parks building in London, United Kingdom during the year of 1997. Apart from these attacks, he has ties to various terrorist organisations throughout the world including South America, the Middle East, Europe and the former USSR.

In 1998, Gabriel Logan and Lian Xing (as part of The Agency) were placed in the International Terrorism Unit with the goal of capturing Rhoemer. At some point in time here, Rhoemer became involved with both Pharcom and Edward Benton, however he wouldn't become involved with The Agency until after the Costa Rica Operation. Working with Mara Aramov and Agency leader Markinson, Erich meets with scientist Jonathan Phagan, the man who has created the virus.

In 1999, Logan and Lian are assigned by the Agency to infiltrate Rhoemer’s base and capture him with the help of fellow agent Ellis, who is kidnapped. When Rhoemer hears of Gabe and Lian coming after him in his hideout in Costa Rica, he orders the Syphon containers, the cure, and everything else to be burned, and one of his men, Ellis, executed by Aramov for being an informant to the Agency. Afterwards, Logan chases after him into his escape plane. Calling his gunned down soldiers “useless”, he parachutes out when it seems Logan gains the upper hand. Heading to the DC subway system, he plants bombs in there in an attempt to lure Gabe there, only to detonate one bomb placed in the subway, destroying the entire thing as part of his escape plan, though Gabe makes it out okay. Then, more bombs are planted in the park, this time able to spread the virus upon detonation. Once they’ve been defused, Erich heads for his small base in Kazakhstan.

His ultimate plan is to launch a whole bunch of nuclear missiles containing the virus for no reason other than because he can. When Gabe is assigned to stop the missiles from launching at Erich’s base, Erich kidnaps Lian, infects her with the virus, burns her base in order to fake her death, then sends one of his choppers to kill Gabe. He also has Johnathan Phagan taken to his stronghold in the Ukraine catacombs, where he keeps prisoners, giving them to Phagan to experiment on, and shipping the test subjects around the world to infect others. When Gabe breaks into the catacombs, Erich orders every prisoner to be executed.

When Gabe and Lian try to stop a war going on between Phagan’s men and Erich’s men, they take the time to investigate why they’re fighting, as well as they’re plan to use the virus. Gabe comes across Markinson and a giant missile. Markinson came to stop the missile, but Erich shoots him before he could stop it. Erich to Gabe reveals that the missile was all his idea, with his plan to put the virus inside the missile and launch it anywhere in the world, ensuring the deaths of millions, and possibly start World War 3, though he couldn't care any less if that were to happen. With the missile thankfully stopped by Gabe—who also tries to download the virus so that he can bring it back to HQ for the vaccine—Erich tries to kill Gabe with a grenade launcher, serving as the final boss of the first game. He is easily defeated by a gas grenade, choking to death.

Redeeming Qualities?

While he worked for the Agency, he was only using them as a way to fund his activities. He also tried to save some of his scientists from his burning base, though it was only because he needed them to continue his operation.

Heinousness?

There are a lot of evil people in the series who want to do really bad things like infect the world with gas, and so on. It's honestly comparable to 24, where everyone wants to annihilate a bunch of countries. Erich, meanwhile, is very nasty. Gabe hates him and considers him something of a personal arch enemy, and his plans were this close to starting a third world war, something that not many villains in the series really do. And while he didn’t likely intend another world war, he certainly wouldn’t have cared nonetheless if it were to have happened. While there are some Rhoemer-like expies throughout the series, they don't match his cruelty and love of destruction and murder. He's kind of like the Kurgan.

Conclusion

I think he’s a keep.
