Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Father's quote and MAYBE the image are good; Pride's image is the page image; the other images don't really show much.

Also would "I kill therefore I am" be a good quote for Barry from that series?

So interseting fact, I went through the Super Sentai page to see which villains have the highest bodycounts and realised that the page has 11 villains (Including the two new ones) who've killed Billions. I'm really grateful we take each show as its own thing.

Do we have any other franchises with that many bad guys who've done that ?

11 who've killed billions each? WOW! I dunno, does Kamen Rider have that many? I know Ultra Series has quite a few. And while not as many, a lot of the Judge Dredd baddies have killed that many.

And honestly, even though each series is separate, something like that makes me wonder if we need to start re-evaluating the franchise's heinous standard, Long Runner or not.

[up][up]

Also dont even think were taking tge franchise as a whole into consideation. Each show is self-contained and ws in its own universe before it was retconned to be one thing after 35 years of being separate. plus trying to figurethe heinous standard of a 40 year anthology show is not something I want to get into.

Also acw, you do realise this KR and metal heroes are in all the same universe as well right. This would be a huge unnecessary headache to go through every entry for all three to check who to keep.

[up][up][up]Yes Judge Dredd has an incredibly high heinous standard. A guy like Kazan who has killed several hundred million of people is the one with the lowest (attempted) body count. Booth caused World War 3, Death whipped out an alternative Earth leaving only him and the other Dark Judges alive, Sabbath planned to kill every living soul in the universe and the AU-version of Cal was causing a Helter Skelter effect that killed billions of people in different realities just to kill a Judge Dredd he never met before.

The Dragon Ball franchise is notorious on this subpage for villains who destroy planets... but there aren't eleven of them. Honestly, does anyone know the villain with the highest body count altogether? I could see Zanza being a candidate, seeing as he has committed cataclysm twice (although only the first time he succeeded, still, attempted).

Metal Heroes and Kamen Rider are in the same universe? Huh.

[up]In any work? Maybe the Marquis of Death? If not him, probably/possibly one of the 2000 AD entries.

[up][up] I think its Zamasu from 'Dragon Ball'' who has killed everyone in 12 inhabited universes.

[up]Yeah the Kyoryger rangers even helped during the Kamen Rider Gaim crossover take out great leader who had resurrected again

Got one more today from one of my favorite horror comics now that it's complete.

What's the Work?

Harrow County is a freaking terrific horror comic, set in the titular Harrow County in the southwest US in or around the 1930s...now, 18 years ago? Hester Beck lived in Harrow County. She was a witch,...but was known as a healer, a guide and a friend...until the townspeople discovered she cavorted with dark creatures in the woods. Strange blights followed her...and she even stole the children to sacrifice for dark rituals. Finally rallying themselves, the people of Harrow County cornered Hester when she sought to abduct a baby, bringing her down. They beat her, stabbed her, shot her and hanged her. And when that didn't work, they burnt her. But Hester promised to return and show her revenge to Harrow County...

18 years later, Emmy is a lovely young girl living her life as part of Harrow county, in an idyllic, rural existence...only to begin having dark, twisted dreams and the mysterious ghosts and beasts in the woods, the Haints, speak to her like an old friend...and Emmy slowly learns she is connected to Hester Beck...in fact, Emmy is the remnant of her power, born 18 years when Hester died, along with that of another witch named Amaryllis, the teacher of Hester. And...who's our villain? In the final arc, the witch has returned. the one, the only...Hester Beck.

Who is Hester Beck?

Hester was brought into being by the sorcerer Malachi long ago. Willful and defiant, she had an independent streak, joining the lodge of sorcerers with her kin. But Hester had a dark side to her, one her teacher Amaryllis never managed to fully stamp out. And Hester? Hester eventually murdered Amaryllis and devoured her flesh to gain her power, becoming even stronger than her fellow sorcerers, with Malachi eventually driven out, becoming one of the Haints in the woods. Hester, seeking a kingdom, created Harrow County...in fact, a large number of denizens are artificial humans, wrought by her from dirt and mud, but they're just as alive as anyone else. Now the series follows Emmy slowly coming to grips with who and what she is, as well as facing her twisted evil twin Kammy. In the penultimate arc, Kammy and Emmy fight and Emmy is forced to kill Kammy for good, and gains her power by cannibalizing her corpse...unfortunately...with the greater power? Hester, whose specter has shown up from time to time, is back.

Hester promptly summons the sorcerer lodge and marches to greet her old comrades and siblings, who frantically claim they're glad to see her. Hester sneers she was "not brought back to listen to lies" and slaughters them. Only one shows guilt, but Hester slaughters her anyways, as "Hester had no remorse in herself. And she did not reward it in others."

Gloating at Malachi, her 'father' against his pleas to leave Emmy be, Hester walks the streets of Harrow again, seeking to return to her status as goddess of her little kingdom. She calls all the townspeople and agonizingly mind rapes them, having snakes burrow into their brains to control them, claiming "don't think of this as punishment. All, truly, we know that's what it is." Knowing Emmy's love for the people of Harrow? She sends them out to destroy Emmy or force her to destroy them...upon escaping, Emmy realizes what she has to do and goes to face Hester, who taunts her for her 'sacrifice' and promises it'll be quick....as the two fights, Hester expresses a full willingness to wipe out Harrow and start anew as Emmy faces her down and summons her own constructs to bind Hester, who resists, gloating that Emmy can't kill her with her own tricks and hangs Emmy with her, gloating she'll recover her power. Emmy, realizing the only way to stop Hester, says if Emmy can't have hester's power, nobody will...before she completely destroys her own magic.Without the magic keeping her alive, Hester is painfully reduced back to the husk she died as, dead at last. Leaving Harrow County in the hands of her best friend, realizing there's no more place for her? Emmy leaves without looking back.

Mitigating Qualities?

Bar NONE the worst in story. Kammy is bad and vicious, but she's a complex character (she truly cares for Emmy and wants her sister to join her), even if she kills Emmy's father. The other sorcerers can be manipulative and one is a serial killer offscreen as he draws power from the dead, but Hester is far, far more evil than any of them. She's a sadistic murderer, and has a sizable body count, all based out of her desire for worship and domination.

She's a great villain and a terrifying one, being an icy witch who will sacrifice anyone and anything for her own benefit. She's ungodly levels of cruel and sadistic, without a hint of redeeming qualities to her. Everything around her is based around domination and control of Harrow County, and she'll betray and murder whoever is in the way.

Conclusion?

Easy yes and terrific goddamn comic.

[tup] Hester. Seems like the comic may be worth a read.

Someone added this to the YMMV of Wynonna Earp:

  • Tucker, Tucker, Jesus Tap-Dancing Christ, Tucker. If he were a perverted Peeping Tom Heteronormative Crusader, it would be bad enough. But then it gets worse because It's implied he sides with the Widows due to the fact that they promise to let him... use his sisters' bodies. The point of no return for him comes when he finds something in the salt flats, that thing being Constance Clootie, neck-deep in the salt. He decapitates her, and it's implied he rapes her some time during this process.
