Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Sorry this has taken so long; I've kept getting distracted by other things.

  • In the Swords and Fire series, Prince Ruven is the son of the Wolf Lord of Vaskandar and an ambitious, cruel mage in his own right who grows into the role of The Heavy and eventually Big Bad. As a skinwitch, Ruven wields a form of magic that can only be mastered by those with a profound Lack of Empathy and happily uses it to torment and dominate those under his authority. Though most Vaskandrian mages care little for the lives of muggles, Ruven treats his fellow mages as equally worthless, manipulating and tossing aside those who serve him and using a combination of potions and his skinwitch powers to enslave foreign mages against their will. Driven to expand his power at all costs, Ruven seeks war with the Serene Republic to the south, planning to weaponize a volcano in such a way as to cause staggering civilian casualties. Vaskandrian culture allows its witch-lords near unlimited power within their own domains; Ruven is a sterling example of the extent to which that power can be abused.

[up] One thing I'd add? Ruven using the entire people in his domain as human shields, forcing other to die for him when Zaira attacks him, with his sheer merriment at others dying in his stead. That, and maybe the use of his Skinwitch powers for actual torture.

first new post of the day? From...Mass Effect, namely the novel Ascension. I give you...Golo'mek vas Usela.

Who is Golo'mek vas Usela?

Golo for short. Golo was born in the Quarian Migrant fleet. Now, the Quarians once created a mechanical race called the Geth, but in an ensuing civil war, the Quarians were driven from their homeworld, in a Migrant Fleet, ruled by a board of admirals. Quarians are forced to wear bio-suits to survive, and as youths, go out on pilgrimages to bring back something of use for the fleet as a rite of passage. As you can expect, Quarian survival intends on solidarity...

Now, ten years ago? Golo? Made contact with the Collectors, beings who abduct other species for...bad purposes. Golo hungered after their technology...and agreed to sell 24 young 'untainted' Quarians who had not gone on their pilgrimages to the Collectors. In essence, the Quarian equivalent of child slavery. He was caught, and the furious Quarians punished him with exile. Golo ended up on the criminal hub Omega, also becoming a contact of the criminal para-military organization Cerberus. Becoming aware that its leader, The Illusive Man, is eager for information on the Quarian fleet, Golo promises to obtain the codes to monitor the fleet or more...wanting revenge on his people.

Golo lures in a ship called the Idenna, and captures a pilot named Hilo, who recognizes and insults Golo. Golo coldly breaks his faceplate, exposing him to the environment of Omega...which makes him contract a horrible, painful disease (Quarians are VERY delicate in their biology)...this makes it harder to interrogate him, but Golo bargains around it...by deciding to say they can profit by giving the C Ollectors fresh human biotics. Golo tries to play things so a Quarian team seeking Hilo will be slaughtered, and tries to deliver the Migrant Fleet codes so Cerberus can do whatever it wants to the Migrant fleet. In the climax, Golo helps invade the Idenna, killing multiple crew members, and savagely beating heroine Kahlee Sanders. One of Cerberus' operatives, Paul Grayson at this point is fed up with Golo and his willingness to screw over his own people, and when Golo is done pummeling Kahlee? Paul shoots him in the head.

Mitigating Qualities?

Golo has no redeeming qualities. He was a scumbag who tried to sell kids to the Collectors for his own gain and ever since then has just made himself a criminal who wants revenge because he was justly punished for a crime he committed. He's willing to kill a bunch of people, sell biotics to the Collectors and expose the entire Migrant Fleet to extermination just out of spite. He's just an awful, terrible person, by human or Quarian standards.

Heinousness? Golo is pretty far down the food chain of evil. He's got zero resources as he's a one man show, but he nearly arranges to screw over the entire Migrant fleet, sold kids into slavery, as a pretty decent body count, and does so without any special powers, anyone to command or...anything else, really.

Conclusion?

I'd say a keeper.

Oh, and Ghandalf, please add that to the Drafts when it unlocks.

Lighty and Ghandalf: Here's the entry that was in the Drafts; I added "gleefully" before the human shields part, thusly:

  • Swords and Fire series, by Melissa Caruso: Prince Ruven is the son of the Wolf Lord of Vaskandar and an ambitious, cruel mage in his own right who grows into the role of The Heavy and eventually Big Bad. As a skinwitch, Ruven wields a form of magic that can only be mastered by those with a profound Lackof Empathy and happily uses it to dominate and literally torture those under his authority. Though most Vaskandrian mages care little for the lives of muggles, Ruven treats his fellow mages as equally worthless, manipulating and tossing aside those who serve him and using a combination of potions and his skinwitch powers to enslave foreign mages against their will. Driven to expand his power at all costs, Ruven seeks war with the Serene Republic to the south, planning to weaponize a volcano in such a way as to cause staggering civilian casualties and gleefully forcing the entire population of his domain to act as human shields to protect his scheme. Vaskandrian culture allows its witch-lords near unlimited power within their own domains; Ruven is a sterling example of the extent to which that power can be abused.

Yes to Babcock, great work, Fried.

Now, as it's been two weeks:

What's the Work?

Jimmy's Bastards is published by Aftershock comics, a 9-issue limited series written by Garth Ennis. The premise? Jonathan "Jimmy" Regent is the famed super spy. Every knows him. Men want to be him, women want to be with him....and he's a shameless womanizer to boot. Like really, really shameless....After defeating Bobo Th Bastard Chimp Clown, Jimmy is given a new partner, one Nancy McEwan who makes it clear she ain't into him...as an evil plot is afoot, led by a secret cabal. And the twist? They're all Jimmy's bastards, united by the creed of "get daddy". And their leader? The eldest of them: Junior. We're into full on "Garth Ennis mocking James Bond now."

who is Junior?

Jimmy Jr (and calling him Junior sends him into apoplectic fits of rage as he's his 'own man') has a burning hatred of Jimmy and formulates his evil plan to get things done. Tracking down all of his half siblings, all 200 of them, he puts together the group, while blackmailing Jimmy's ally Idi by removing a very vital part of his anatomy (guess) and holding it for ransom, before trying to have Idi eliminated....as a sidenote, this story is mostly a comedy so this is going to get a little absurd in a bit, so strap in.

Now, in order to push Jimmy to find him, Junior uses his men as fake terrorists to fake attacks, with real consequences...but mainly he convinces his half siblings these are real attempts on Jimmy's life, to which Jimmy casually kills them to give Junior the info he needs. Now, Junior uses a device called the Gender Fluid that switches genders of the targets....meaning everyone in London....except Jimmy and Nancy. Jimmy is lured to Junior's lair as Junior decides to break him...by revealing that a lot of the casual sex Jimmy's been having? Well...a lot of those women? Were Jimmy's own daughters. "You didn't just fuck your daughter, Jimmy. You fucked all your daughters." Jimmy...understandably has a meltdown and Junior leaves him broken and shivering, deciding to blackmail the entire world an conquer it. Nancy finds it impossible to reach Jimmy, but opts to try to save the world herself...when she takes a few of Junior's siblings hostage, Junior reveals that he'd secretly implanted bombs in all their ribcages and activates it with an app on his phone, killing the hostages. Capturing Nancy, Junior comes to a realization about her, captures his two Co-Dragons as they try to escape, having realized Junior is just nuts. One tries to desperately warn the rest about Junior's little backup plan, to which Junior gives a cheerful "Oh, come on, does that sound like something I would do?" to which he gets a "It's EXACTLY what he would do!" Jimmy himself then touches down to save Nancy...Junior uses the app to kill a few siblings and proceeds to order his remaining siblings to rush Jimmy together. "He's going to get some of you, but he can't get all of you." And....blows up anyone who dares to hesitate or delay, as Jimmy mows them down with a tool no spy should be without: a machine gun disguised as a machine gun. Junior waits until his sibligns are all dead before sneaking up on Jimmy and sadistically beating him down, gloating all the while...Jimmy and Junior have both realized by now? Nancy is Jimmy's daughter as well, one Junior missed. Junior ends up distracted by a small recording Nancy had left that repeats "Junior" over and over, sending him into frothing rage and distracting him long enough for Jimmy to come up behind him and shove him to his death. The gender fluid is stopped, normalcy is returned and Jimmy and Nancy get to know one another as father and daughter properly...though the very liberal Nancy is horrified to realize her real mother is now married to the next leader of the Conservative party

....and then we see a reveal that Junior left a little contingency....having left Jimmy's grandkids in little cells to be fed, nourished, trained and indoctrinated with "get Pop-Pop"

Mitigating Qualitis?

This is kinda what happens when Garth Ennis gets to do what he wants without someone going "Are you, uh, sure about this, Garth?" but I digress. Junior is obviously the worst villain in story, and heinousness wise...okay, gender flipping a nation isn't really up there, but...his bodycount is surprisingly high as is his casual attitude towards sacrificing his half siblings on pointless suicide attacks, having his sisters screw their father to later reveal this and break Jimmy's mind., and then murdering all of said siblings before cheerfully trying to commit patricide. Now, while he does have a bit of a complex about Jimmy (he grew up without a father)...Junior is a spoiled, vicious sociopath who can't stand not being adored and freaks out to be referred to as Junior because "I'm my own man!" Jimmy isn't exactly a paragon of morality himself (he is a hero and clearly cares about saving lives, but his shameless inability to keep it in his pants is a bit of a problem, not to mention he isn't too bothered about committing mass filicide to save the world)...but Junior is easily the worst there.

Conclusion?

I gotta say...I thought I'd seen it all, but this's unique. Junior's nastiest crimes, though (IE: sending all his siblings to the meat grinder just as a distraction) are played dead straight even in all the weird and low brow comedy. I'd give a yes.

I want to add some images or possibly a quote from Fullmetal Alchemist to the image and quote pages for Complete Monster. How are these?

"How could anyone say humans aren't weak? It's an inherent trait. How about we take advantage of their weakness? They certainly do make a good natural resource. Right? It's all they're good for." -Father

Father, The Gold Toothed Doctor, Pride (from the 2003 anime (spoilers)), Shou Tucker.

Hope your prepared for an unforgettable luncheon
