According to the laconic, it is when a statement is repeated to add emphasis. Unfortunately, unless if there are some additional words or pauses, it's not clear that emphasis is added, so most examples come off as simply repeating what was said, which makes me wonder if it's tropable.

According to One Liner Wick Check, the results are as follows:

  • Added emphasis: 9/50 = 18%
  • Just repeating the phrase: 36/50 = 72%
  • ZCE: 3/50 = 6%
  • Unsortable: 2/50 = 4%

Can this be saved in any way? We could rename it, but is there enough to keep, or should we just cut it?

Update: This thread was expanded to cover Double Don't Know. The following OP was written by Laundry Pizza 03:

Double Don't Know is just Repeated for Emphasis for "I don't know" (which isn't a tropeworthy StockPhrase by itself) — in other words, it's The Same, but More Specific. Suggest merge and cut.

Wick check results:

  • Repeated for Emphasis for "I don't know": 28/47 (60%)
  • Just "I don't know" twice: 3/47 (6%)
  • Other misuse: 1/47 (2%)
  • ZCE: 4/47 (9%)
  • N/A: 11/47 (23%)

"Just repeating the phrase" strikes me instead as "emphasis is implied" form of ZCE, so it's not an issue with the trope itself. I support simply renaming (Saying Twice For Emphasis) and cleanup.

Merge with Repeated for Emphasis. One-Liner, Name... One-Liner appears to be The Same, but More Specific to Repeated for Emphasis in addition to heavily misused.

Yeah, merging does sound like a good idea.

Repeated for Emphasis would need to be altered because it's specifically for a single word, but in retrospect it's an odd limitation.

[up][up]I agree that it's an odd limitation, so we can adjust the definition of Repeated for Emphasis to allow phrases in addition to single words if we merge One-Liner, Name... One-Liner into it.

While we are at it, why don't we merge Double Don't Know too? It has the same problem of The Same, but More Specific to Repeated for Emphasis.

[up]I think we could do that, because looking at the description, it does appear to be redundant.

I'm just going to go ahead and officially expand the thread's scope to include merging Double Don't Know into Repeated for Emphasis as an option alongside the existing proposal of merging One-Liner, Name... One-Liner into Repeated for Emphasis. I don't think we need a wick check because the description makes the definition clear enough already (particularly the relationship between it and Repeated for Emphasis and One-Liner, Name... One-Liner), and the wick count isn't terribly high anyway, but if anyone wants to do one anyway, go ahead.

Edit: Tagged Double Don't Know.

[up]OK, that's good to know. We can still handle it through this thread because its wick count is low enough to not add too much to the workload.

Edit: Edited the OP to mention that this thread covers Double Don't Know, and added a link to its wick check. Let's leave Double Don't Know on the Queue for now in case we end up not taking any action through this thread, because if that happens, a dedicated thread might get a different result (similarly to what happened with Sexy Spectacles and Peek A Bangs in the past).

The description of Double Don't Know claims to signify that "the protagonist is (dramatically) out of ideas", but Repeated for Emphasis also mentions the dramatic element. Besides, less than 28 examples of the intended usage is very poor for a 2007 trope.

Wouldn't mind if it got merged.

It occurred to me that ~Laundry Pizza 03 should be paged to this thread due to Double Don't Know being covered in this thread, though as I previously said, Double Don't Know could still get the originally planned dedicated thread if this thread ends up not doing anything with it.

Do we have anything to put on the crowner other than these?

Those two options wouldn't be mutually exclusive with each other.
