Given the sub-tropes that exist for Mistaken for Romance, I suspect it already is broader than it's currently written. It just needs the description to catch up with the sub-tropes. So, that does sound like the best way forward for IUEO SG examples.

Yes, the proposal is to just rewrite Mistaken for Romance a bit to more comprehensively cover In-Universe cases of Shipping Goggles.

What would go on a crowner? If anyone thinks it's necessary, list the option(s) that would go on it and I or another mod will make it.

I'll also note, for reference, that an expanded definition of Mistaken for Romance would be a supertrope to Imaginary Love Triangle. ETA: And Relative Error.

Posting this comment to make public that I voted in favor of an expansion.

Relative Error is already listed on the Mistaken for Romance page, but Imaginary Love Triangle will need to be added.

I've tossed my hat into the ring for the expansion.

I didn't say that as well as I meant to. Right now I think they're actually the exact same trope, and broadening Mistaken for Romance will neatly fix that problem.

Created Sandbox.Mistaken For Romance. I added a summary line at the top and added a couple of the variants to the subtrope list, and nuked the mention of Truth in Television since the trope is NRLEP.

I think we need to double-check whether She Is Not My Girlfriend is really a sub-trope. That trope is for when a romance outcome is likely to happen, and explicitly states that Mistaken for Romance is for when there's no romance. There may be a wider problem with She Is Not My Girlfriend as that and Just Friends look like duplicate tropes, where they've both latched onto two different kinds of stock phrase for the same trope scenario (two characters who use a stock phrase to deny they have romantic involvement, but the relationship is narratively arranged for the audience to realise that the characters are in denial about the possibility that the relationship is, or will become, romantic). Even if it includes non-romance options, that would just make it a stock phrase reaction to either Just Friends and Mistaken for Romance, in which case it still wouldn't be a sub-trope of Mistaken for Romance.

It might be worth mentioning The Not-Love Interest somewhere, too. Perhaps in the Heterosexual Life-Partners paragraph.

Fair points. Made some edits.

I checked to see how progress on the rewrite was going, and I don't see any problems, so I'll swap it in in three days (November 19) if nobody objects, since I think we've been waiting for the description rewrite before moving in-universe examples of Shipping Goggles there.

I feel that we might as well remove out-of-universe examples of Shipping Goggles (but not references to the term) as well since it's a Definition-Only Page, since the fact that we'd presumably be checking every page means we could probably kill two birds with one stone if we did that. I'll add it to the to-do list.

Edit: On the subject of the rewrite, I saw that there was no link to it in the to-do list, so I added it.

The fact that I planned to swap in the new description for Mistaken for Romance at the beginning of last week slipped my mind because real life took priority over TRS work last week, so the description has been swapped in and we can move in-universe examples of Shipping Goggles to that trope now.

Edit: Since we can clean up wicks now, I made Sandbox.Dewicking Goggles to keep track of which wicks we've gone through, since we're leaving references to the Fan Speak term, while removing out-of-universe examples and moving in-universe examples to Mistaken for Romance.

I might work on this soon. I did cut the Anti Shipping Goggles and Yuri Goggles redirects due to low inbound counts and being non-indicative (the former was the subject of a TRS thread from years ago; I'm not sure whether the latter was from TRS or if it was just a regular redirect).

So, I've been going through Main/ wicks and the in-universe wicks I've seen don't appear to fit Mistaken for Romance because they actually involve in-universe shipping or Shipper on Deck characters, rather than mistakes on the characters' part. I also noticed that the first example in the sandbox for in-universe examples is one of those types of wicks (I didn't go through all of them).

Edit: Oh, right, I forgot this was about mistakes even out-of-universe. I'll go back through Main/ and remove those wicks for being misuse.

Edit: Leaving in-universe examples for comments about a Show Within a Show (similarly to how the split between Adorkable and Endearingly Dorky was handled), moving characters referring to other characters to Mistaken for Romance, and removing the examples I mentioned in the previous edit.

My bad, I should've probably given a clearer edit reason: I'm simply editing out Shipping Goggles as entries; wicks within the text of either descriptions or other examples are still allowed, so I'm leaving those.

Artifact of the Stock Phrase title, more than likely. Examples like that probably need to be moved to Mistaken for Romance or its subtropes.

Just finished cleaning up the rest of the remaining wicks! In-universe entries moved to Mistaken for Romance when appropriate, trimmed out out-of-universe examples, and only preserved out-of-universe Fan Speak usage when appropriate.

Every page was accounted for, so locking up.
