Not Thriving: Dismissed Gender

I previously brought up that Dismissed Gender has multiple issues here.

  1. It has non-standard formatting. The fictional examples are all lumped together without sorting. Also, it has a general examples section which is against the Examples Are Not General rule.
  2. The on-page examples are a mess. Some are about the audience's reaction, some are about In-Universe fictional gender values, and some are just ZCE.
  3. This trope is about audience reactions to certain elements in fiction, so it should probably be YMMV.

But the most prominent issue is that it's not thriving. It only has 18 wicks (excluding the TRS queue wick) for a trope that has been around for more than 10 years.

Solutions:

  • Cut the trope.
  • Yard the "situations in a work that would be problematic or more acceptable if the genders involved were switched around" concept since it only has two valid examples.

Considering it's not thriving, would we be able to merge it with at least one of the other Double Standard tropes? At the very least, I think redirecting to Double Standard and moving examples between subtropes of it might work.

I think Pandering to the Base covers one aspect of it but not the whole concept of "situations in a work that would be problematic or more acceptable if the genders involved were switched around".

If the author changes something that wouldn't be accepted by the audience to avoid backlash that might fall under Pandering to the Base and What Could Have Been. But what if the author didn't change anything but just the fact that if the genders were reversed (for example in a Double Standard: Abuse, Female on Male situation) it wouldn't be accepted by fans? Do we have a trope for that one?

Upon further inspection, this page feels redundant with Gender Flip, just with more negative connotations regarding why the genders are set up the way they are (or at least assumptions regarding why that was done).

I'm in favor of cutting because I don't know what purpose this page serves that isn't served by Gender Flip, Double Standard, and possibly Unfortunate Implications.

The most valid concept I can see here is "a supertrope to all the gender-related Double Standard tropes we have", and even that doesn't really seem like it's justified in being a standalone trope.

Yeah, I think the double standard tropes we have currently cover the idea decently enough. Not every scenario is covered (obviously) but the major ones are.

[up][up]I feel the only supertrope to gender-related Double Standard tropes we need is Double Standard itself, so I agree.

Maybe some of the trope examples could fit into their Analysis pages, but otherwise, I don't see the use for the page.

[tup] Cut

Since this is a Not Thriving thread and there's significant consensus in favor of cutting, there's no need to wait three days. Go ahead and cut.
