Old Complete Monster cleanup thread

Welcome to the Complete Monster proposal thread! This is the thread where new Complete Monster examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential redeeming qualities will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the CM subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  4. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  5. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  6. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite CM" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  7. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  8. If you are suspended from parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  9. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for CM equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, the crimes they commit, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some villains, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?

This is where any potential redeeming characteristics or tragic backstory should be discussed. Do they have a tragic past? Do they show that Even Evil Has Standards or Even Evil Has Loved Ones? Maybe a Pet the Dog moment or two? This is where these should be discussed in full. Not every potential redeeming moment is a clear-cut disqualifier, but we should hear of any potential issues to ensure the character is discussed in full.

Are they bad enough?

A Complete Monster has to be particularly vile by the standard of the work they appear in. Therefore, you should look at what the character does compared to similar characters in the same work. This takes into account things like:

  • Their resource level (a human Serial Killer can't stand up to an alien Omnicidal Maniac, but they can be bad by the standard of other human serial killers)
  • The amount of time they have to work with (such as a one-shot character versus long-running antagonists)
  • The quantity vs. quality of their crimes compared to others (someone with a lower victim count but far more visceral and personal crimes could be considered as equally bad overall as someone with a higher body count but less horror involved)

Essentially, this section is an analysis of the kinds of villainy shown in the work and an explanation of why this particular character's villainy stands out within it.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This thread tackles very serious and dark matters on a daily basis. We will be discussing things like murder, rape, torture, human trafficking, crimes against children, and in particularly dark cases, several of these issues at the same time. We keep a lighthearted air, but all candidates carry the general assumption that these are awful individuals committing disgusting crimes. We ask that if you participate, you do so with the requisite seriousness such dark topics require; exclamations of how gross something is, whether serious or sarcastic, are disrespectful to the topics at hand, and if you cannot handle such topics, please do not participate.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

I might have a new proposal incoming, but I have a question first. If a race is established as Always Chaotic Evil then that's a disqualifier because moral agency issues, right?

However, what if a character still manages to stand out from the rest of his race as being particularly cruel even by their standards, to the point that even other members of the race are afraid of this character? Is it still a moral agency issue, or does the Even Evil Has Standards moment allow for a loophole?

[tup] for Bull. The abuse and him having killed other people before the events of the film are the things that make him stand out compared to the protagonists.

Wait, slayer movie villains need a higher body count in general? Because normaly seven kills is enough for a bad guy in a standalone movie.

@rosewood47: One approved CM is a beastman from Warhammer and these are Always Chaotic Evil. So if the race has some (miminal) standards or things they won't do and the villain violates said standards he/she is worth a try.

[up] Umm I think most of the keepers have 10+ at a minimum, usually more.

[up] x2 Yes, if the other members are acting out of legit standards (as in "hey this guy is too overboard!") rather than just cowardice and fear you can. I think the requirement for an Always Chaotic Evil race to qualify is much more lenient than it is in-theory.

So just another ask for feedback on the Odium quotes. Also since the second one seemed to be liked, am I allowed to add it to the drafts page, or do I need more approval?

@rosewood47 The orcs from Lord of the Rings have a couple CM's, and they are very much Always Chaotic Evil, albeit with occasional showings of tribal loyalties. One of them, Gothmog, actually has their writeup note that they are part of an Always Chaotic Evil race, but are unusually bad, so your candidate should be fine.

[up] Nah that's not the issue. I am not familiar with LOTR but awfulness alone doesn't cut it as far as ACE races go. See: Goblins from Goblin Slayer, there are at least 2 that are worse than the others and still got cut. Something else must have been happened.

[down] If they can show something resembling a redeeming quality, then it looks fine. I read a CM entry where some orcs spoke against him and then he killed his own men.

@Mr-ex777: I remember that Goblin Slayer explicitly showed that every Goblin is a sadist little bastard since birth who can’t change his nature. With the Orcs from LOTR it’s a bit more vague. We never get an in-universe confirmation that Orcs can’t have redeeming qualities or lines they won’t cross.

[up][up][up] If you are refering to Gul'dan's entry from Warcraft 2016, that's not the same situation because Orcs in Warcraft are not an Always Chaotic Evil race and they have just as much understanding of morality as humans and there are heroic Orcs in that universe.

But yeah, if there is no explicit confirmation that the race has moral agency issues and if they have some standards which the candidate breaks, he should be fine.

And, honestly, I am giving a weak [tup] to Mandy. From what I am reading, she is responsible for 7 deaths and her cruel manipulations of Emmett are probably enough to push her in a stand alone movie.

The work

James Bond is THE spy franchise. Based on the novels of Ian Fleming the movies ar about the missions of British super spy James Bond. Each movie usual involves super villains with an evil plan and an army of henchmen, one or multiple attractive women that are bedded by Bond and a cool car with a bunch of cool gadgets that are getting put to good use in the obligatory car case.

The candidate

General Orlov (image) a high-rank Soviet General and one half of the Big Bad Duumvirate of Octopussy, the thirteenth Bond movie.

His deeds

  • He is first seen in a meeting of the Soviet leadership where they discussing the mutual disarmament agreement with the NATO. When General Gogol speaks in favor of the agreement, Orlov interrupts him and claims that their tank divisions at the borders outnumber the NATO forces ten-to-one and that they could easily conquer Denmark, Luxembourg and most of West Germany in five days. Gogol’s concerns that NATO could retaliate with nuclear weapons are ignored by Orlov who proclaims that the West is divided and afraid to start a nuclear war. The debate is interrupted by the Soviet Premier who tells Orlov in no-uncertain terms that they will only use their military for defensive purpose and not to wage war on the west, much to Orlov’s frustration.
  • Despite his proposal having been rejected, Orlov is secretly scheming behind the backs of his government. Working with the smuggler Kamal Khan, Orlov plans to sneak a Soviet Atomic Bomb into West Germany and detonate it during a Circus Show at an U.S. air force base, making it look like an American nuke exploded by accident. This “tragic accident”, so Orlov hopes, will result in the public in West pressuring their governments into dismantling their nuclear weapons. And once the nukes are gone, the USSR can launch an invasion and expand their territory without having to worry about nuclear retaliation.
  • As part of his agreement with Kamal, Orlvo is stealing Soviet treasures (like Fabergé eggs), replacing them with forgeries so no one will notice the theft. However, this smuggling ring eventually gets discovered by the British MI6 and James Bond himself is senT to investigate. Eventually Bond learns about Orlov’s plan to detonate a nuclear bomb.
  • Bond manages to ambush Orlov in East Germany after he handed over the bomb to Kamal’s henchmen. But before Bond can do anything one of Orlov soldier’s stumbles upon him. Bond kills the soldier but Orlov escapes and alerts the rest of his men. Bond being Bond, steals Orlov’s car and cases after the train with the bomb onboard, followed by a panicking Orlov in another car. Eventually Bond manages to board the train before he crosses the East German border. Orlov, trying to warn his allies on the train about Bond, runs after the train, past the East German border guards and get’s uneconomically gun down. As he lies on the ground dying General Gogol, who has discovered his smuggling operation, approaches him and calls him a thief and disgrace to the uniform. With his last breath Orlov replies that tomorrow he will be the hero of the Soviet unicorn. And then dies.

Mitigating Factors/Freudian Excuses

Now the main reason why Orlov was rejected, is that he’s considered a Well-Intentioned Extremist. However, nothing he says or does during the movie implies such a thing. If he had claimed that NATO was a threat to the USSR and that reducing the number of nuclear weapons would make them vulnerable to attacks from the West then I could buy him just trying to protect his country. But he never says anything like that. During the Soviet meeting he just talks about how they have a numeral advantage and should use it to attack and later when Bond calls him out on trying to kill thousands of innocent people with a nuclear bomb he, again, only talks about how this is better than “letting a handful of old men in Moscow bargain away or advantage.” Even when he dying he only cares about himself, proclaim that tomorrow he will be hailed as a hero. The way I see him, Orlov is just a warmonger who believes the Soviet Union should conquer as much land as possible and is genuinely baffled why the rest of the government wants peace instead.

How bad is he compared to the other villains in the setting?

  • As of now there are 25 James Bond movie that are part of the official canon. However, the five most recent ones are in a different continuity than the rest. So including Octopussy, we have 20 movies fully of nasty villains Orlov has to compete with.
  • In the other movies we’ve had people like Stromberg and Drax who tried to whip out most of mankind; recurring villain Blofeld who - among other things - wanted to start a nuclear war between the USA and USSR; General Moon who wanted to destroy the DMZ to allow North Korea to conquer the South and Elliot Carver who tried to start war between China and Great Britain as part of a plan to get elusive broadcasting rights in China.
  • Additionally we also had a bunch of villains who are not as bad but still tried to kill a whole bunch of people: Elektra almost succeeded in nuking Instanbul, Zorn attempted to flood Silicon Valley, Goldfinger tried to poison to garrison of Fort Knox and the population of a nearby village with a deadly gas and Largo attempted to nuke Miami among other things.
  • If Orlov had succeeded thousands of people would’ve died in a nuclear blast, so that alone puts him on the same level as Elektra and Co. But this was only the first step of his plan. Had he survived he would’ve attempted to start a war with the West, leading to even more deaths and destruction. I think that puts him above most of the mention villains except for Blofeld (who has the advantage of appearing in multiple movies), Stromberg and Drax.

My Verdict

Personally I’m giving him a [tup]

And, honestly, I am giving a weak [tup] to Mandy. From what I am reading, she is responsible for 7 deaths and her cruel manipulations of Emmett are probably enough to push her in a stand alone movie.

But that's the norm for a slasher film.... Horror is fucked up. People kill way more people all the time their. You either need cruel and unusual death, or a genuinely high by the norm body count to keep

Didnt we down vote Orlov before. I thought an issue is he didn't want a nuclear war which puts him under the others who try that.

@miraculous: True, Orlov doesn't wants to start a nuclear war. Initially he, rather naively, believed that the West wouldn't use nuclear weapons as response to a conventional invasion. And later he comes up with his whole plan to make the West scrap their nuclear weapons so that they Soviet Union can invade without having to worry about that. But that's just Pragmatic Villainy.

The only villain out of the ones mentioned who actually wanted a nuclear war was Blofeld who has the advantage of being either the Greater-Scope Villain or Big Bad in five movies. Notably Moon and Carver, the other two villains who wanted to start a war, didn't intend to cause a World War, either. General Moon only wanted North Korea to conquer the South. And Elliot Carver wanted to use the war as cover to whipe out the current Chinese leadership and replace them with someone on his payroll, who would then stop the war and grant him the exclusive broadcast rights he wanted.

Edit:Okay forgot Stromberg wanting to start one as part of his plan to whipe out mankind. But he and Drax basically beat anyone bodycount wise. Can't go much higher in this franchise than "almost all of mankind".

@WetFlannels: The thing is, assuming their plan would've worked and both men had survived, Khan would just taken his ill-gotten money and move back to India. For Orlov, on the other hand, this was just the first step of his plan and he would then try to continue with his goal of conquering large parts of Europe. That’s why I think Orlov is ultimately worse, even if they share the crime of attempting to detonate a nuke.

Not sure on Orlov myself but got a quick one here.

What's the work?

Expelled from Paradise in an animated film by Gen Urobuchi about a seemingly utopian society, DEVA, populated by the digitized avatars of most of humanity in the far future. Trouble starts when the hacker Frontier Setter begins breaching their security to broadcast messages to the population. Heroine and DEVA Agent Angela Balzac is assigned to venture to the derelict planet Earth to put a stop to him and in a (fairly generic) twist, her employers aren't as benevolent as they seem.

Who are the DEVA Officials? What have they done?

Simply credited as A, B and C, the ruling triumvirate of DEVA are rather zealous but Angela trusts them enough to follow through their orders. Anything sketchy? Well, they leverage the finite amount of storage they have by promoting those they deem useful, oppressing those they don't, with the worst cases being "archived": basically imprisoned forever alone to free up space.

When Angela discovers Setter just means to peacefully give DEVA citizens the option to join him in a spacecraft venturing to new worlds and reports such to the Officials, they angrily continue to order he be destroyed and when Angela refuses, strip her of her citizen rights to be archived without trial, pulling rank to skip trial or communication with the legislative council. Angela is freed by Setter and helps him leave Earth in his rocket after evading DEVA agents, preparing to start a new life on the planet while the Officials presumably continue to plot to recapture her.

Heinousness?

Subtle but their punishment for insubordination (or being deemed useless) is an And I Must Scream imprisonment and they've got control over 98% of humanity.

Mitigating factors?

The Grey-and-Gray Morality stuff doesn't hold up: the DEVA Officials abuse their power and skip legal proceedings when results don't benefit them. The anger they show towards Angela paints a trio of egomaniacs bent on controlling humans forever.

Verdict?

Keep.

[tup] to the DEVA officials.

Alright, I have a guy to propose. In order to avoid any concerns about authenticity (the story is on alternatehistory.com and can only be read by members of the site), I'll be copy and pasting the story here.

What is the work?

Face the Storm is a story/timeline on alternatehistory.com about an alternate timeline (at the time, a hypothetical future one) where Sanders runs and wins against Trump in 2020, with the canon creator Q being nominated as the Republican nominee in 2024 and crap hitting the fan. However, I'm not going to be discussing the base story today-neither the 2020 Q or any of his other versions count (and even if they do, I doubt they'd be approved due to the rules here)-the story eventually devolves into a parodic work portraying Q as an interdimensional inevitable demiurge-esque being fighting against Rick Sanchez and the like.

What I wish to talk about is a fanmade timeline posted on the thread.

     Read the timeline here.
“My fellow citizens: I desire to speak so simply and so plainly that every man and woman in the United States who may hear or read my words cannot misunderstand… The last three years have been a time of unparalleled economic calamity. They have been years of greater suffering and hardship than any which have come to the American people since the aftermath of the Civil War. As we look back over these troubled years we realize that we have passed through two stages of dislocation and stress… Before the storm broke we were steadily gaining in prosperity. Our wounds from the war were rapidly healing. Advances in science and invention had opened vast vistas of new progress. Being prosperous, we became optimistic — all of us. From optimism some of us went to over expansion in anticipation of the future, and from over expansion to reckless speculation. In the soil poisoned by speculation grew those ugly weeds of waste, exploitation, and abuse of financial power. In this overproduction and speculative mania we marched with the rest of the world. Then three years ago came retribution by the inevitable worldwide slump in consumption of goods, in prices, and employment. At that juncture it was the normal penalty for a reckless boom such as we have witnessed a score of times in our history. Through such depressions we have always passed safely after a relatively short period of losses, of hardship and adjustment. We adopted policies in the government, which were fitting to the situation. Gradually the country began to right itself. Eighteen months ago there was solid basis for hope that recovery was in sight… Then there came to us a new calamity, a blow from abroad of such dangerous character as to strike at the very safety of the Republic. The countries of Europe proved unable to withstand the stress of the depression. The memories of the world had ignored the fact that the insidious diseases left by the Great War had not been cured… These challenges confront our Republic, and I am doing my utmost to preserve our nation of liberty and prosperity. I am also announcing the end of my career in the public arena. I do not intend to compete for the office of President of the United States in 1932, and I will concede the office of President to whoever is elected.” - Herbert Hoover, Retirement Address, June 13 1932. “Populists Revolt in Midwest, Great Plains: Thirteen people lynched in Indiana as part of a series of protests against Hoover administration. Protests generally driven by farmers expressing dissatisfaction with inability to sell crops and bums unable to find employment. Some demonstrators claimed solidarity with the Bonus Army, and hoped to achieve similar aims. Indiana judge describes event as “inhuman melee”, and promises just retribution.”

“Hoover Burned in Effigy in Raleigh Row: Last night in Raleigh, NC, protestors created homemade effigies of President Herbert Hoover and Vice President Charles Curtis from pulped newspaper and burlap sacks full of straw. They then stacked the effigies into a pile and set them alight. Bystander described demonstration as ‘harmless fun’ in light of ongoing depression.”

“If the United States is ever to become Pro-American, she must oppose the Red International of Bolshevist tyranny, the Gold International of Anglo-Zionist perfidy, and the Black International of Clerical Fascism. She must purge herself of the corruptive influences of money-lenders, hyphenated-Americans, Bolshevised trade unionists, and Papist influencers.” - Excerpt from Uncle Sam’s “Pro-Americanism: A Thesis on America’s Future”, printed in the editorials of the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, and eleven other newspapers, June 20, 1932.

“Who is Uncle Sam? In the past two weeks, a manifesto entitled Pro Americanism: A Thesis on America’s Future, written by an ‘anonymous patriot’ under the alias Uncle Sam, has become the leading bestseller in the nation. Though the book first appeared on the market in December of last year, and sold in modest numbers until this summer, as we go to press, U.S.’s book is surpassed in sales only by the Bible. This book alleges that there are three global conspiracies working to destroy the United States, each controlled to various degrees by the Roman Catholic Church. Uncle Sam also alleges that Wilson was a puppet of one of the conspiracies, and forged the Zimmerman Note and had the Lusitania fitted with a bomb to justify the United States entering the Great War on the British side to erode American sovereignty. New York governor and Democratic nominee Franklin Roosevelt calls the manifesto ‘A demented screed written by a broken man’, and hopes that the U.S. craze ends as quickly as it began. An abridged version of the manifesto appeared in this and twelve other papers last month. However, this raises the question: exactly who is U.S., and is there any truth behind his bold assertions?” - The New York Times, July 1932.

“Frank Kellogg Nominated for Republican Ticket: August 10, Frank Kellogg, President Hoover’s former Secretary of State and Nobel laureate, has accepted the Republican Party’s nomination, running against Franklin Roosevelt. Kellogg was previously the US’ ambassador to the United Kingdom, improved American relations with Mexico, and was one of the signatories to the Kellogg-Briand Pact to ban war as an instrument of foreign policy. President Hoover has endorsed Kellogg, which may harm his chances at the polls due to association in the public eye between Hoover and the depression. Republicans hope that if elected Kellogg will help grant America a peaceful and prosperous future.” - August 10, 1932.

“Uncle Sam Announces Independent Run: Enigmatic ideologue ‘Uncle Sam’ has announced that he will run for president as an independent candidate in a letter to the editor of the Chicago Tribune. His book, Pro-Americanism, continues to sell by the hundreds each day, and its apparently incomprehensible message seems to resonate with millions of Americans, and is especially popular in the Midwest. Uncle Sam intends to debate Republican and Democrat candidates Kellogg and Roosevelt on September 1, in Cincinnati, Ohio. - August 12, 1932.

“Pre-Debate Scuffle, Kellogg and U.S. Lobbing Insults: In a letter to the Tribune, candidate Uncle Sam called Republican nominee Kellogg a ‘redcoat sympathiser’ and a puppet of an international Anglo-Jewish conspiracy. Uncle Sam claims that if Kellogg is elected, he will sign what he calls a “suicide pact for the Republic” with the British, binding America’s interests to those of the United Kingdom and making the United States an appendage of Canada that will be resettled with Russian Jews. This is not the first time Uncle Sam has lashed out in this way, and has repeatedly called Kellogg’s challenger Roosevelt an ‘invalid’, ‘crippled crypto-Fascist’, and agent of Rome. Kellogg reported that he has no intentions to do any such thing, and retorted that even if he had, Uncle Sam’s vision for America would be worse, because it would discredit democracy and the American Way from within, never to recover.” - August 28, 1932.

“U.S. Will Debate by Radio: Independent presidential candidate Uncle Sam will meet Roosevelt and Kellogg tomorrow. He claims in his latest letter to the Tribune that if he were to show himself in public as a candidate, agents of the Vatican would assassinate him immediately. While it would have been needless to reiterate the ridiculousness of such a claim only months ago, several million Americans have converted to the ‘Cult of Uncle Sam’, as Roosevelt calls the candidate’s supporters. The debate organizers have agreed to a compromise. U.S. will be allowed to debate, and need not be physically present. Instead, he will debate Kellogg and Roosevelt by radio, from an undisclosed location in Cincinnati. U.S. will be able to hear the other candidates, and his own voice will be broadcast to the debate hall and emitted from a radio set. U.S.’s place at the podium will be filled by an American flag. To alleviate the other candidate’s concerns that Uncle Sam is a foreign national or otherwise ineligible to serve as President, U.S.’s campaign manager and prospective Vice President William Pelley says he will serve as a placeholder for U.S. on ballots."

Extracts from U.S.’s Performance at the September 1 Debate: On economic policy, “Trade unionists, under the Bolshevik thumb, say that it will take class struggle and revolution to earn the basic necessities of life. I reject the Red Hydra’s lies and say that when I am president, because you supported me, every American shall receive a house, job, and automobile to call their own. I call this theory ‘mutual economics.’” On foreign policy, “Last time the United States intervened abroad nothing improved, we lost a quarter of the world to the Reds, and almost lost our homes to them as well. The Anglo-Zionists duped us, I will not let them repeat the trick.” On Prohibition, “I say it is a sad day when Americans take up the banner of so-called progressive causes to serve the will of the Pope in banning us from the enjoyment of life’s simple pleasures. I will reverse the disastrous nineteenth amendment immediately if elected.” On immigration, “The Vatican has used immigrants as pawns for decades to decrease wages, and serve as a fifth column to infiltrate the highest offices in the land and undermine the four sacred columns of Liberty, Unity, Justice, and Equality.” In the week after the debate, there were numerous instances of violence and harassment against Jews, Catholics, immigrants, and socialists. Nine people were lynched.

“Roosevelt Beats Kellogg, U.S.: Last night, former New York governor Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected to the office of President of the United States in a landslide over Franklin Kellogg and the ‘anonymous patriot’ Uncle Sam. Roosevelt has accepted congratulations from Kellogg, but Uncle Sam has not been heard from…”

“Huey Long Assassinated: December 23, Louisiana senator Huey Long was shot to death outside his Winn Parish home by a lone gunman who committed suicide before the police arrived. Senator Long was rebounding from a failed impeachment attempt as Louisiana’s governor in 1929, and became a senator this year. Long’s home state is in mourning, along with his supporters throughout the country. Long was a polarizing figure, whose admirers called him a champion of the downtrodden and his adversaries a dictator. Perhaps there is truth to both of these statements, but now Louisiana puts one of her favorite sons to rest.”

“Oscar Marcuson, the gunman who killed Senator Long, was not just a depraved individual, but instead was a mercenary of dark forces working to bring down America. Roosevelt saw opposition within the Democratic party, and wanted Long silenced.” - From Uncle Sam’s last letter to the Chicago Tribune. Demonstrators claimed that the Tribune should no longer print U.S.’s editorial letters, and threatened to boycott the newspaper. In January, 1933, after the Long Incident, Uncle Sam created U.S. News, a radio station on which he could say whatever he wanted.

“The Black International of Clerical Fascists is spreading to the United States. First they took over Italy, now they’re taking over in Germany and the United States is next. Roosevelt may not be openly Catholic, but he is possessed by a demon summoned by the Pope. We’re dealing with some real black magic here, some powerful, Biblical stuff. Roosevelt’s New Deal will suppress Christianity, enslave all true, patriotic, one hundred percent Americans, and replace them with hyphenated Americans from Italy and the Balkans. Then’ he’ll drag us into a war with the Golds and the Reds and the Day of Prophecy will be at hand.” - U.S. News

“Fascist Frank Roosevelt, the son of Beelzebub, has had it now. Anonymous patriots in America’s courts are working to bring down Fascist Frank’s disastrous National Industrial Recovery Act. Godspeed to them, but in the meantime, the NRA is out and about spying for their fifth column overlords. I remind you, the NRA is coming for your guns! Do not hand them over, and remember the sacred rights given to you by God and the Constitution.” - U.S. News

“The NRA say that they are just doing their part. Whose part are they doing? They are American Blackshirts, and anyone with a blue eagle in their window is doing the part of Roosevelt and Hitler. Both of them use eagles as their symbol, the only difference is Roosevelt’s is blue and Hitler’s is black. If your neighbor’s window has an eagle, you can assume them to be a part of the Fascist plot against America, must do your patriotic duty to smash it.” - U.S. News

“Spike in Violence in Small Towns Nationwide: In the past week, there has been a significant increase in robbery and assault against NRA-member business owners and their families. The majority of this violence has been concentrated in the upper Midwest states of Minnesota and Iowa, with reports of similar events occurring as far away as California. In a typical attack, like the one that befell Richard Cellar’s general store in New Liberty, Iowa on May 2nd, a group of U.S. supporters rushed the victim’s place of business, smashed the storefront windows with a sledgehammer, and bagged Mr. Cellar’s wares to carry them off. They found Cellar hiding behind the counter and tied his hands with rope, before leaving him in his ransacked store. Other people have not been so fortunate, like Mr. Adam Rogers of Chrysanthemum, Oklahoma, who was lynched from a makeshift scaffold in the main street by U.S. supporters and his house burned. Rogers’ family, living in a different part of the country under aliases, refused to comment further. In all cases of mob violence, the victims displayed NRA insignia such as the Blue Eagle.”

“In what little we have seen of Frank Roosevelt’s policy, which is disastrous, we can see that he reveals himself not only as a Papal Fascist, but also as a Bolshevik. This is made apparent not only by his recognition of the USSR, but by his creation of the Home Owners’ Loan Corporation, which will collectivise housing in America, allow the Fascist-Bolsheviks to seize your home and drive your family onto the street, and let Italians and Negroes in to lay waste to your house.” - U.S. News

“Civilian Conservation Corps Part of Infernal “Population Reduction” Plot, Says U.S.: Strangely popular political commentator and alleged anonymous patriot Uncle Sam, the founder of U.S. News, the second largest radio show in the United States, claims that FDR’s Civilian Conservation Corps is part of a literal fiendish plot to destroy our Republic. The CCC’s stated purpose is to conduct forestry and environmental restoration projects, providing employment to enrollees. Enrollees live in designated camps and are organized into 200 man companies. Uncle Sam claims that enrollees are sterilized with drugs in the water supply which activate the population control serum with which he claims vaccines are laced. He also says that the CCC represents the opening stages of a program of universal conscription for men and women, and that recruits are taught to worship Satan, hate America, and build concentration camps where their families and “true Christians” will be imprisoned in the End Times. Obviously there is no truth to any of Uncle Sam’s claims about the CCC, which contradict the nature of the organization as a body composed of civilians and dedicated to the conservation of the outdoors. It is a considerable loss for democracy when a third of the population credulously accepts such absurd claims.”

“Uncle Sam Announces Republican Candidacy: Although Uncle Sam only won ten percent of the popular vote in the 1932 Presidential Election and won no electoral college votes, he has decided to try again in 1936. Uncle Sam’s campaign manager of 1932, William Pelley, would be U.S.’s vice president if he wins the nomination next year.”

“The British Zionist plot has again infiltrated Mexico, by installing the one-party PRI regime after Carranza’s Liberals failed to finish the job of invading the United States. As long as Mexico is outside of American protection, the British will stop at nothing to install a hostile government in Mexico to fulfill their plans of partitioning America between Mexico and Canada along the Mason-Dixon line. Clearly the only solution to the Mexican question is a swift intervention to topple the Mexico City regime and create a good neighbor. Only then can we successfully weed out the Catholic and socialist influences in the Mexican state.” - U.S. News

“Roosevelt Reassures the Nation: Speaking from the White House, President Roosevelt has addressed the deterioration of the international community following the Italian invasion of the Empire of Abyssinia. The Solomonic Dynasty of Abyssinia has ruled continuously since medieval antiquity, and has remained the last bastion of the oriental tradition in eastern Africa, and Africa’s sole remaining native kingdom. The Ethiopians repelled an Italian invasion in 1889, and another in 1896. Now, the Royal Italian Army, a modernized and highly effective fighting force equipped with tanks, armored cars, poison gas, and heavy artillery, is expected to make short work of Ethiopian resistance. Upon receiving news of the invasion, Roosevelt held a press conference in front of City Hall, in which he spoke in light of disturbing developments such as the Japanese invasion of northern China, and the German rearmament program. During the conference, Roosevelt pledged to focus “all of America’s political and industrial might” on resolving the Depression crisis, and urged all Americans to “not give in to fear, but maintain an active calm”.

“Socialist Militia Seizes Michigan Town, Declares Commune: Muskegon: A group of fifty socialists employed at the Challenge Machinery plant staged a short-lived uprising. The revolters were largely of Polish and Lithuanian stock, and were armed with hunting rifles, shotguns, and improvised implements which they used as makeshift truncheons during their revolt. At least two men had assembled homemade submachine guns. The revolters crashed cars to form barricades, raised a red flag in Hackley Park, and took thirty hostages in the library. They proclaimed the inauguration of the Soviet Republic of Michigan, and attempted to make phone calls to union branches throughout Michigan, inviting them to join the revolution. The telephone lines were then cut. They were dispersed by the Michigan State Police after a fifteen hour siege, and arrested. The Federal Bureau of Investigation then raided IWW branches in Michigan, beginning in Detroit and Grand Rapids. Challenge Machinery has fired all workers who are verifiable members of the IWW union. The FBI has promised that it has acquired sufficient warrants to ensure more raids will follow, and that Bolshevism will not be tolerated on American soil."

“U.S. Debates Roosevelt Again: As in the 1932 debate, Uncle Sam agreed to debate against the incumbent president, Franklin D. Roosevelt, by radio. This time, vice presidential candidate Pelley appeared alongside U.S.’s radio to clarify and give structure to his cryptic answers. For example, when asked what he would do to address the Depression, U.S. answered only, ‘Apples. Two percent’. Pelley elaborated that Uncle Sam intended to create an improved welfare system to thwart foreign and anti-producerist influences in the American economy, and that he would attempt to channel wealth from America’s richest two percent to the common people. During the debate, Uncle Sam’s supporters wore red and white striped armbands, which have become symbols worn to the listening parties that double as U.S. rallies. Every time U.S. spoke, they stood in silence and gave straight-armed Bellarmy salutes.”

“Pro-Americans Force Two to Kneel Before Flag at Indiana Town Hall, March Through Street”

“Massive Pro-U.S. Protests in Florida: Listeners to U.S. News and fervent supporters of the controversial Republican candidate Uncle Sam gathered in Florida for an impromptu radio rally in which they gathered in a stadium to listen to the daily Truth Hour. These are apparently somewhat common events across the United States, and have been since Uncle Sam used the Truth Hour to announce his 1936 presidential run two years ago. At these gatherings, which generally occur on Friday and Saturday afternoons, supporters spend one and a half hours listening to guest speakers, who are adept in U.S.’s coded jargon and weave it into their speeches. A typical address at a radio rally exemplifies the xenophobia, anti-communism, and anti-semitism among U.S.’s supporters. These speeches are generally punctuated with short, patriotic music pieces between speakers. When the Truth Hour arrives, the supporters stand in rapt silence, listening to the message of Uncle Sam, whom they have named the Wise Leader, and the Harvestman. Afterward, the stands of the venue are filled with uproarious applause. At one of these rallies in Florida, U.S. launched into an impassioned tirade against Catholicism, equating it to Nazi and Italian Fascism and claiming that in the event of Roosevelt’s reelection the American Catholics would declare Roosevelt a dictator, ushering in a new Dark Age of “Iberian medievalism”. He implored his supporters to rid the country of Catholics, whom he termed “the Papal termites”. When the Truth Hour ended, Pensacola U.S. supporters set out wearing their iconic blue shirts and striped armbands to conduct a pogrom. They were met by a Democratic counter protest, which resulted in a violent clash. Thirty six people were killed, either from injuries sustained in the Pensacola riot or were lynched by the blueshirts. Four of the dead were Democratic counter-protesters, one of whom was hung from a lamppost after having been beaten nearly to death.”

“Roosevelt Beats U.S./Pelly: As analysts expected, Franklin Roosevelt defeated Republican challenger Uncle Sam in both the popular vote and the Electoral College. Although Uncle Sam possessed a cohort of extraordinarily followers, and managed to win a contiguous block of states in the Midwest and Great Plains, along with Florida, he could not sway the Republic with his 140 electoral votes…”

“Roosevelt Dead in Plane Crash”

“In United States news, Colonel George S. Patton has led a coup against the John Nance Garner administration. In the minutes after Patton released cavalry and tanks and seized the capitol, numerous state and local governments recognized the potentially fictitious Uncle Sam as the President of the United States. Localized militia groups espousing the Uncle Sam ideology took to the streets, conducting a massive pogrom against their political enemies. Canada has entered a state of strategic preparedness, and the British Empire has signed a defensive pact with Mexico in case Uncle Sam maintains his hold on power and makes good on his threats to invade the country.” - BBC News, November 25, 1936.

“The floating fortress RSS Ironclad launched a successful bombing raid against the eastern seaboard of America from off the coast of occupied Newfoundland. Boston, Philadelphia, and Providence were carpet bombed for the twelfth, fifteenth, and eighth times, respectively. This will serve the Americans their revenge for the third and second atomic rocket bombings of Birmingham and Belfast last week. On the Pacific front, the Imperial Japanese Army has taken Juneau, putting an end to the Alaskan front. Japanese sources report that half a million Yanks have died from the pneumonic plague west of the Rocky Mountains. Any year now the North American hermit kingdom will fall, and Uncle Sam’s reign of terror will end.” - BBC News, April 4, 1978.

In the timeline, something changes before December 1931, resulting not only in Hoover declining another run, but the rise of an enigmatic figure named Uncle Sam.

Who is Uncle Sam and what has he done?

Uncle Sam is a raving conspiracy theorist and the timeline's adaptation of Q, with some severe differences. Q publishes a manifesto titled "Pro-Americanism: A Thesis on America's Future" sometime in December 1931. The book sells a bit, but reaches it's peak after Hoover's announcement of not running resulting in severe backlash against him and NYT, Chicago Tribune, and nearly a dozen publishing an excerpt Bolsheviks, Jews, Englishmen, and Fascists as collaborators of a global conspiracy perpetrated by the Catholic Church. The actual book contains a bunch more conspiracies as well. The books sales skyrocket to becoming the second best-selling book in the country after the Bible. On August 12th, 1932, Mr. Sam announces an independent run for President. He also evidently purchases a radio to debate Kellog and Roosevelt (an anachronism-no debates were held until 1960). Sam wins 10% of the vote and no electoral votes, but refuses to concede. After Sam prints more bigoted conspiracies and alleges Huey Long (who was killed earlier) was brought down by the cabal controlling America, protestors force him out of the mainstream papers. However, he simply responds by making a radio show.

Now, until this point, Uncle Sam has mostly just been a racist bigoted newsman and perennial candidate. However, as he continues his verbal tirades, violence spikes across the country against Roosevelt, resulting in several of his rural supporters being assaulted or even lynched due to Uncle Sam calling them clerical fascists. Uncle Sam then announces he will run as a Republican (with him eventually winning the nomination), before his supporters kill a Union striker. Uncle Sam starts a rally in Florida that leaves 36 dead, either from being lynched by U.S.'s supporters and hung, general injuries, or being killed by counterprotestors. Roosevelt wins (though far less than in our timeline, only getting 391 electoral votes), but mysteriously dies in a plane crash later. The next day, Patton overthrows Vice President Garner and multiple states swear allegiance to Uncle Sam, who begins a massive pogrom as Britain and Mexico prepare to ally in case he invades Canada like he promised to do.

The final post of the timeline reveals Sam started a war that has lasted four decades, up to April 4th, 1978. By this point, cities are carpet bombed by the UK several times over (Philadelphia had to endure fifteen) and Birmingham and Belfast have been nuked by Uncle Sam thrice and twice respectively, with the carpet bombings being revenge for those nukings and the BBC article's mention of it being last week, as well as the length of the war and the fact these carpet bombings happen so much, heavily implying Uncle Sam this is a regular occarance. In somewhat good news, Imperial Japan (which seems to have survived World War II and allied with the UK) has taken Juneau, putting an end to the Alaskan front...only to find that half a million Americans east of the rockies died of the pneumonic plague.

Freudian Excuse or other mitigating factors?

The main issue is the comedy of the original Q. The Q of the original story, in all his iterations, was disqualified because his story goes completely bonkers and turns into Q from star trek rambling about being red pilled and Rick Sanchez nonchalantly genociding Q-infested worlds before wanting to go back to watching interdimensional cable, meaning Q isn't played seriously and goes full parody. However, not only was this story written by a fan and not the main author, thus putting it outside that canon, but it was also written before they were even introduced (though 1820's Q was introduced, nothing was comedic about him at that moment). This story, overall, is simply a showcase of what Q could've been like in 1930's America. It also does lack any arguable comedic moments from the original even before the reveal of Q being a demiurge, like Q nuking Boston just because it has "libtards"-Uncle Sam is simply a destructive bigot near-perfectly fitting the mold of what was going on at the time.

Besides that, Uncle Sam's got nothing-there aren't any implications or speculations he's separate people like in the original story, especially since voice modulators didn't exist, and he isn't even fanatically loyal to anyone like the original Q seemingly is to Trump. Outside of that, he's got buckets of personality, no indication he's insane (the closest we get is Roosevelt calling him a broken man, but there's no implications that holds water and he seems to have a grasp on reality), and isn't sympathetic at all.

Heinous standards?

Even before the final couple entries, Uncle Sam has resulted in several people being assaulted and lynched across the country, and in a pogrom in Florida that left 36, including his supporters, dead, so I feel he'd count even with that given he was just a popular radio host. Once he gets into power, not only are his political enemies across the country massacred, but he invades Canada, sparking a decades long war that results in carpet bombings, constant nukings, a pandemic of pneumonia, and, given the tone of the BBC article, possibly political repression in his enemies' lands (though admittedly, the writer or writers of the BBC article might just hate Uncle Sam and want to win the war while staying optimistic he'll fall soon). Overall, he passes.

Verdict?

I'd say yes to Uncle Sam.
