Then three years ago came retribution by the inevitable worldwide slump in consumption of goods, in prices, and employment. At that juncture it was the normal penalty for a reckless boom such as we have witnessed a score of times in our history. Through such depressions we have always passed safely after a relatively short period of losses, of hardship and adjustment. We adopted policies in the government, which were fitting to the situation. Gradually the country began to right itself. Eighteen months ago there was solid basis for hope that recovery was in sight… Then there came to us a new calamity, a blow from abroad of such dangerous character as to strike at the very safety of the Republic. The countries of Europe proved unable to withstand the stress of the depression. The memories of the world had ignored the fact that the insidious diseases left by the Great War had not been cured… These challenges confront our Republic, and I am doing my utmost to preserve our nation of liberty and prosperity. I am also announcing the end of my career in the public arena. Kellogg was previously the US’ ambassador to the United Kingdom, improved American relations with Mexico, and was one of the signatories to the Kellogg-Briand Pact to ban war as an instrument of foreign policy. President Hoover has endorsed Kellogg, which may harm his chances at the polls due to association in the public eye between Hoover and the depression. Uncle Sam claims that if Kellogg is elected, he will sign what he calls a “suicide pact for the Republic” with the British, binding America’s interests to those of the United Kingdom and making the United States an appendage of Canada that will be resettled with Russian Jews. “U.S. Will Debate by Radio: Independent presidential candidate Uncle Sam will meet Roosevelt and Kellogg tomorrow. He claims in his latest letter to the Tribune that if he were to show himself in public as a candidate, agents of the Vatican would assassinate him immediately. While it would have been needless to reiterate the ridiculousness of such a claim only months ago, several million Americans have converted to the ‘Cult of Uncle Sam’, as Roosevelt calls the candidate’s supporters. The debate organizers have agreed to a compromise. U.S. will be allowed to debate, and need not be physically present. Instead, he will debate Kellogg and Roosevelt by radio, from an undisclosed location in Cincinnati. U.S. will be able to hear the other candidates, and his own voice will be broadcast to the debate hall and emitted from a radio set. U.S.’s place at the podium will be filled by an American flag. To alleviate the other candidate’s concerns that Uncle Sam is a foreign national or otherwise ineligible to serve as President, U.S.’s campaign manager and prospective Vice President William Pelley says he will serve as a placeholder for U.S. on ballots."

Extracts from U.S.’s Performance at the September 1 Debate: On economic policy, “Trade unionists, under the Bolshevik thumb, say that it will take class struggle and revolution to earn the basic necessities of life. I reject the Red Hydra’s lies and say that when I am president, because you supported me, every American shall receive a house, job, and automobile to call their own. I call this theory ‘mutual economics.’” On foreign policy, “Last time the United States intervened abroad nothing improved, we lost a quarter of the world to the Reds, and almost lost our homes to them as well. The Anglo-Zionists duped us, I will not let them repeat the trick.” On Prohibition, “I say it is a sad day when Americans take up the banner of so-called progressive causes to serve the will of the Pope in banning us from the enjoyment of life’s simple pleasures. I will reverse the disastrous nineteenth amendment immediately if elected.” On immigration, “The Vatican has used immigrants as pawns for decades to decrease wages, and serve as a fifth column to infiltrate the highest offices in the land and undermine the four sacred columns of Liberty, Unity, Justice, and Equality.” In the week after the debate, there were numerous instances of violence and harassment against Jews, Catholics, immigrants, and socialists. Nine people were lynched.

Long’s home state is in mourning, along with his supporters throughout the country. Long was a polarizing figure, whose admirers called him a champion of the downtrodden and his adversaries a dictator. Perhaps there is truth to both of these statements, but now Louisiana puts one of her favorite sons to rest.”

The majority of this violence has been concentrated in the upper Midwest states of Minnesota and Iowa, with reports of similar events occurring as far away as California. In a typical attack, like the one that befell Richard Cellar’s general store in New Liberty, Iowa on May 2nd, a group of U.S. supporters rushed the victim’s place of business, smashed the storefront windows with a sledgehammer, and bagged Mr. Cellar’s wares to carry them off. They found Cellar hiding behind the counter and tied his hands with rope, before leaving him in his ransacked store. Other people have not been so fortunate, like Mr. Adam Rogers of Chrysanthemum, Oklahoma, who was lynched from a makeshift scaffold in the main street by U.S. supporters and his house burned. Rogers’ family, living in a different part of the country under aliases, refused to comment further. In all cases of mob violence, the victims displayed NRA insignia such as the Blue Eagle.”

Uncle Sam claims that enrollees are sterilized with drugs in the water supply which activate the population control serum with which he claims vaccines are laced. He also says that the CCC represents the opening stages of a program of universal conscription for men and women, and that recruits are taught to worship Satan, hate America, and build concentration camps where their families and “true Christians” will be imprisoned in the End Times. Obviously there is no truth to any of Uncle Sam’s claims about the CCC, which contradict the nature of the organization as a body composed of civilians and dedicated to the conservation of the outdoors. It is a considerable loss for democracy when a third of the population credulously accepts such absurd claims.”

“Socialist Militia Seizes Michigan Town, Declares Commune: Muskegon: A group of fifty socialists employed at the Challenge Machinery plant staged a short-lived uprising. The revolters were largely of Polish and Lithuanian stock, and were armed with hunting rifles, shotguns, and improvised implements which they used as makeshift truncheons during their revolt. A typical address at a radio rally exemplifies the xenophobia, anti-communism, and anti-semitism among U.S.’s supporters. These speeches are generally punctuated with short, patriotic music pieces between speakers. When the Truth Hour arrives, the supporters stand in rapt silence, listening to the message of Uncle Sam, whom they have named the Wise Leader, and the Harvestman. Afterward, the stands of the venue are filled with uproarious applause. At one of these rallies in Florida, U.S. launched into an impassioned tirade against Catholicism, equating it to Nazi and Italian Fascism and claiming that in the event of Roosevelt’s reelection the American Catholics would declare Roosevelt a dictator, ushering in a new Dark Age of “Iberian medievalism”. He implored his supporters to rid the country of Catholics, whom he termed “the Papal termites”. When the Truth Hour ended, Pensacola U.S. supporters set out wearing their iconic blue shirts and striped armbands to conduct a pogrom. Thirty six people were killed, either from injuries sustained in the Pensacola riot or were lynched by the blueshirts.
