Needs Help: Animation Lead Time

Go To

To-do list:

  • Move correct examples from Animation Lead Time to Production Lead Time. Since it's now Trivia, move examples to Trivia subpages as needed. Inline wicks in non-Trivia examples are still allowed.

    Original post
Considering that the trope Animation Lead Time involves behind the scenes stuff (i.e. the time it takes for animated projects to be made, rendering pop culture references dated by the time it's released), I feel the trope should be classified as a Trivia trope. I've already spoken with several tropers on the subject and they feel a similar way as well.

~Shimp 1995 Fixed the title. You just need the article's name for the title.

Since this trope appears to clearly be trivia, I'll open the thread because I don't think a wick check is needed.

They sometimes make gags about it, such as in Animaniacs (2020) and The Simpsons. That seems like *waves hand vaguely* a thing.

I'm less awake than I thought I can't make this statement coherent

Trouble Cube continues to be a general-purpose forum for those who desire such a thing.

But is "Animation" name okay? This seems to be about a production in general making a Shout-Out to something that stops being relevant when the work is released.

[up] The description makes it explicitly animation only due to the idea that animation takes much longer than live-action and other scripted media, so it has that problem more often. (I'm not sure about that claim, but I don't know much about production time).

The production period necessary for any given work varies depending on the medium. Obviously live television is instantaneous, while even live-action scripted shows can be filmed and edited within days. This puts certain works like animation at a disadvantage, as animation takes time. Good animation takes a long time. Even the simplest animated TV shows can see a production period of a year for a single episode with multiple episodes in production at the same time.

tbh this feels more like a Useful Note I guess? Doesn't strike me as actual Trivia since it's baked into the medium.

[up][up] The trope also includes Web Video, Comics, and Podcast examples, tho.

To me, it's more of a trivia page.

This is definitely common in video games, too (and technically, many of them involve animation due to cutscenes and character mobility). A famous case includes Smash Ultimate, whose production began by the end of 2015 and had to prescind of major post-2015 Nintendo and 3rd party properties for representation in the game (the only exceptions were the stages and spirits from Zelda BOTW, Mario Odyssey and a playable Pokémon from Sun and Moon; everything else had to wait until the DLC). So I think the Animation word is fine.

[up][up][up]The thread itself says it's locked (not just with the banner, but with the posts on the page you linked to), and you've already been told it was discontinued in the past (or rather, in that case, you contradicted a mod on the matter a few hours after the mod said it's a job for TRS), so you should have known this already.
