Since D23 has been long over and Strange World has already been released. I decided to create a dedicated thread for Walt Disney Animation Studios' next animated film Wish. Honoring Disney's 100th Anniversary coming November 2023.

Concept Art:

Asha (the film's main protagonist) and Valentine

The Stars

Valentino the Goat

Here's a special D23 2022 display showing Asha and Valentino based on this concept art.

lol the goat reminds me of Esmeralda's goat.

Not sure how I feel the main character's design. Like I think it looks nice, but it also feels pretty similar to Isabella from Encanto. I feel like since Encanto didn't come out that long ago it's kind of dicey to have another character with such similar design.

As long as no gargoyles fall in love with the new goat, I'm fine with it.

According to a D23 panel on this movie, Valentino (Tudy's character) will be given the ability to speak after Asha's wish was granted.

Apparently this movie is a blend between CGI and a 2D art style (similar to Paperman). Sounds like the long rumored Disney Animated Film that is attempting a 2D art style that has been surfacing in certain parts of the Disney and Animation Community from a few years back.

I’m very excited for Wish!!! I’m hoping that it could permanently bring back 2D animation to Disney (cgi is nice but we should have all kinds of animation styles), I’m also hoping for:

  • a real physical villain who actually dies (sources say the villain will be one of Disney’s most formidable foes, so redemption should off the table! Not even an option!!)
  • Asha will be a princess by either marriage or better yet adoption! We have way too many Disney Princesses who are born into royal families, it would be fantastic to have more princesses like Cinderella, Belle, Tiana, and Mulan who were born common and became royal in a different way and a princess by adoption would be an interesting new concept!

The latest few Disney films have been disappointing (I haven't even watched Strange World yet), but Encanto proved to be the exception. Disney's musicals have been, on average, much better than their non-musicals, especially in this modern era. So I feel pretty optimistic about this one.

According to Drew Taylor during an interview on the Jim Hill podcast series "Fine Tooning With Drew Taylor and Jim Hill", the film is apparently quite good. He spoke about it at length in an episode titled, "Which animated features to watch for in 2023" which came out January 23, 2023. The Wish discussion starts at the 24:40 minute mark.

I'm hoping they don't fall back on the old Disney Princess clichés when they make the movie-stuff like:

...And possibly, if there's a prince, maybe he and Asha are still Just Friends by the end of the movie. And she might be a lesbian, falling in love with another girl from her village, since her voice actress is one.

[up]The footage confirms the film, or at least parts of it, will indeed be in 3D animation after all, seemingly in the same style as in their most recent flicks.

At the very least though they are trying a different and more colorful style of 3d Animation instead of trying to go hyperealistic even when It doesn't make sense (Onward, Strange World), so I have to applaud Disney for that.

Ah, I see Disney is trying the Spider-Verse/Puss in Boots: The Last Wish route of more stylised animation.

Funny how its Disney playing catchup to other animation studios in that rwgard, just like 20 years ago.

Chris Pine is confirmed for the film.

Aside from Into The Woods I'm not sure he can sing, and aside from Don't Worry Darling not known for baddies... still will want to see how he does.

[up][up][up][up]

To be clear, Grace Randolph says he'll be the villain. (Could work. I liked his singing in Into the Woods and his character was definitely less than sincere. (IYKYK.))

Please tell me he'll be a straightforward bad guy. Like how about if he's a fusion of Gaston and Governor Ratcliffe? Even I have grown weary of the Twist Villain. Or if he absolutely has to be a twist villain (oof, I'd hate to think twist villainy could be a mandate), then how about a proper one like King Candy?
