Welcome to the Magnificent Bastard (MB) cleanup thread! This thread is where we clean up or cut already-existing entries.

Here, you'll find explanations of the criteria for the trope as well as our rules/procedures for approving and cutting candidates.
What goes through this thread?
- Cut requests. If you believe a MB has been approved and they do not count, this thread is where you propose their removal. To know how to go about this, please see the FAQ folder on the Administrivia page, where the process is explained in detail.
- If we ever need to consider cutting multiple examples without individually reviewing them (e.g. if we discover widespread plagiarism with a particular troper's MBs), the initial discussion will be on this thread and we'll then escalate to the mod team (as described here) to get a formal consensus if we decide to recommend a mass cut.
- If an entry was put on the wrong subpage/YMMV page, you may propose where they should be moved to.
- Full rewrites of existing entries, including expansions, trims, and ground-up rewrites. If your rewrite is approved by the thread, feel free to add it to the drafts page so that other users can check grammar and the like before it is included with the rest of the weekly swaps.
- If an entry on a work's YMMV page doesn't match the entry on the media subpage, you can bring it here to discuss which entry works better.
What does not go through this thread?
- New candidate proposals - as stated before, those are done on this thread.
- Unapproved wicks - if a Troper encounters either of these kinds of wicks, they can be cut with no approval.
- Any MB link on a non-YMMV page - as a YMMV trope, it should not be linked on those pages regardless of any cleanup effort. The only exception is if the wick is being used within the definition of another trope.
- If an MB link on a YMMV page refers to an unapproved character. If it refers to an approved character on any such page, the wick can stay. On the other hand, if the unapproved character being linked to sounds like they might have promise (and you don't feel like checking it out for yourself), feel free to mention it on the approval thread - someone may already know why they don't count, or it could invite a brand new discussion!
- Proposals for images, quotes, and videos of already-approved MBs - quotes and images are proposed on the approval thread, while videos can be uploaded normally as they are screened for approval by the moderation.
- Crosswicking examples to YMMV pages - if an example has already been approved and added to the main page, you do not require any special permission to add the example to a work's YMMV page (assuming the work has a page already). If a YMMV page doesn't exist yet, then you can make it yourself, but either way, feel free to just add the example without asking.
- Small changes to existing entries - these can simply be done on a Troper's own prerogative with no approval.
- Spelling and grammar fixes.
- Pothole changes.
- Minor rewordings.
- Spoiler tags.
While these changes do not require any kind of approval, it is requested that should you make any of these changes, you do one of the following:
- Make the same changes on the relevant Sandbox page, then add the Sandbox to the list at the bottom of the drafts page. This will add the Sandbox to the weekly swaps and ensure that the edits end up on the relevant locked page. If the Sandbox is already listed, then once you make the edits, your job is already done!
- If you don't know how the Sandboxes work or simply don't have the time to find it, then you can simply post on the thread about the changes you made. Someone else can then make the edit on the relevant Sandbox and add it to the weekly swaps.
- Alternatively, you can simply request that the change be made directly to the locked page on the Locked Pages thread. Members of this thread keep track of that one, so we will ensure that the changes are made in the Sandbox so that it doesn't get deleted during the next swap.
Again, these changes don't require any approval, but we prefer to keep the entries on the YMMV pages and the locked pages the same in order to avoid any miscommunication or errors between entries, so if you do make the change, we would greatly appreciate it if you could ensure the change is made on the locked page as well.
As a final note, we do not care what other sites have to say regarding whether or not a character counts. We have our own criteria and they have theirs for their MB equivalents; while they are similar, they are not exactly the same and should not be treated as such. Another site removing a character from their equivalent should not be a reason why a cut is proposed here, and if this is the case, it will likely lead to mod intervention.

The plan has dudes conquering the world by jet pack… this film isn’t exactly delving into war crimes.
I swapped out the Keyes quote for the Nagito quote in the Sandbox. Y'all are welcome to adjust if needed.
Sadly I think I'll have to say cut Pierce. Sounds too busted up by the end.

So the Scooby Doo page has been sitting in the drafts for a really long time. Are we just waiting for it to get a quote because at this point I think it should just go up without one given how long it's been waiting for one.

I'm also not entirely sold on Tah'rust Inmee as an example and one of the reasons I didn't upvote him. The guy literally howls in agony when his wife is found out to be the culprit and his spirit is exorcised almost immediately after. He also has a pretty big Villainous Breakdown of him shouting at Phoenix.
Honestly characters in Ace Attorney have to not be culprits in order to count as every culprit has a VB or are reduced to a pathetic wreck, with Damon Gant being the exception. Calisto Yew's another I'm not entirely sold on but that's less to do with her VB and more to do with her trash talking Agent Lang.
There is one character from The Great Ace Attorney Duology that has a very VERY minor breakdown (if you call slamming a single fist onto a desk once a breakdown) but aside from that her plan is practically foolproof and she ALMOST gets away with murder by virtue of framing her
I think it would be best if I just told you the Ace Attorney ones I'm 100% sold on. Gant, De Killer, Aura. Everyone else could use a reevaluation or such.

Honestly Tah'rust seems fine. He very much recovers from his breakdown as shown in the next scene and takes his exorcism with complete dignity and even has a smile on his face when it happens. I vote for a keep.

Alright... that just leaves Sirhan Dogen and the nameless female spy called Calisto Yew, though that isn’t her real name. Anyone else willing to vouch for them? I feel like both could keep but Dogen is a Blind Retired Monster who's plan is basically to make use of Keyes to help him get his revenge. Meanwhile, "Yew" is The Starscream to the Yatagarasu trio and had them killed for fairly selfish reasons. The question is, how much of this was under Alba's orders and what did she do on her own? It's been a long time since I've played the first Investigations game. The problem is her borderline sociopathic sadistic disregard for human life, might make her too bad. This isn't Damon Gant who is selfish to a point but is still willing to be a nice guy even when it's not to his advantage, this is downright sadistically laughing at suffering.

Okay, here's a guy I think should be cut from RWBY
- Hazel Rainart is a ruthless yet honorable member of Salem's inner circle. In his youth, Hazel lost his sister Gretchen in a training accident before he was confronted by Salem, who revealed her immortality and convinced Hazel that Ozpin's war with Salem and the deaths caused were for nothing. Joining her, Hazel desired to both assist Salem in beating Oz and build a new world order free of Kingdoms or Academies. Hazel utilizes both his fighting skill and takes advantage of his pain-numbing Semblance to inject Dust in himself to gain far more power and mastered several Dust techniques. After Salem deploys him and Tyrian Callows to Mistral, the two are able to kill Huntsmen across the continent; he later assists with trapping the heroes in Haven Academy. During Salem's invasion of Solitas, after Hazel is told of Salem's true apocalyptic plans and the password to the Relic of Knowledge, he has Oscar use the password as a way to both verify it is not a trap and that Oscar was telling the truth without even using the Relic. He later fights Salem to give Oscar and his allies time to escape, finally restraining Salem and lighting them both ablaze, weakening her enough for Oscar to use the power of Ozpin's cane, sacrificing himself to buy the heroes time and take Salem out of commission.
It's not that there's anything disqualifying about Hazel with him being an Affably Evil Noble Demon, it's just I don't think he really does anything magnificent. Hazel pretty much just serves as muscle and doesn't even really strategize enough to count on that.
His EP says he uses his semblance in clever ways like with dust, but really Hazel is just a simple fighter that just uses his semblance to tank hits and inject himself with dust when things get hairy. It's not portrayed as a clever strategy, plenty of characters use dust in tough fights, Hazel just uses it on himself since he doesn't use/need a weapon.
His "No one gets in, no one gets out" thing at Haven is just him closing the door and announcing that the White Fang are setting up the bombs, it's not a clever trap he's just stating what's happening.
The only thing I can say that Hazel does that is actually clever is him getting Oscar to test the relic for him, but that's one moment, versus the rest of the time where he's just muscle.
And I think he falls short of two of characters that primarily treated as muscle by the other villains: Neo, who uses her illusion semblance to trick and confuse her enemies, disguises herself to infiltrate a military compound to steal one of the Relics, steals it back from Salem to force Cinder to do what she wants of going after Ruby when Cinder was taking too long to get to that. And there's Tyrian, yes I think Tyrian really has more cleverness to him than Hazel with him effortlessly psychoanalyzing Mercury after he goes on a Motive Rant to call him out on him just not really knowing to do with his life and him using the fight between Qrow and Clover to get Qrow to temporarily team up with him and to then use that to murder Clover and frame Qrow for it to help sow disunity between the heroes and the Atlas military.
Like Hazel is cool and all, but really there's not much more to him than his muscle.

Cut Hazel. He doesn't seem to be that impressive outside of being a good fighter with only one real smart move compared to similar characters such as Neo who have far more.

I'll probably wait around a bit for more traction on Hazel.
I've said this before and I'll say it again: not every example is going to be a David Xanatos or Hans Gruber style schemer who always gets their way until the very end. Abstain for now.
My issue isn't that Hazel doesn't get everything right, it's just 95% of his screen time he's just there for muscle, he has only one clever action. Tyrian, a sadistic Ax-Crazy loon shows more cunning than him.

I mean he owns propaganda like a book that we only see in one scene and the Nazi film revealing the plan does have a swastika displayed, but the movie's very light on portraying that connection Sinclair has to them and not being in-your-face about it.
I still think none of this is bad enough to cut him by the end of the day.
