mayor's OP

A continuation of this Trope Talk thread. Wick check apparently not needed per at least one mod.

Sempai/Kōhai recently came up in the linked Trope Talk thread as possibly being spelled unusually. Traditionally, "senpai" is the spelling that is used for the term, but we spell it as "sempai". There was some disagreement about whether or not we need to change the spelling, but "senpai" was generally agreed upon to be the way it is usually spelled.

The question is: should we change it to "senpai"? I personally say yes. What does everyone else think?

I am good with the proposal.

Yeah, I agree with using the more common spelling. Should be a pretty straightforward edit project, too!

I'm not a Japanese language expert, but I pretty much exclusively have hear it as Senpai outside of TV Tropes, so I am in favor of that name.

Move description to Senpai/Kōhai. Since there are redirects for every spelling variation not sure if we'd need to do anything else if it gets swapped.

Sure let’s go with senpai, but which version of ko(u)hai? The description uses both.

since we're going by modern hepburn style it should be kouhai [1]

[up]It should actually be kōhai, with a macron above the "o". "Senpai/Kōhai" would be how the page would be formatted.

Anyway, I'm in favor of renaming it to Senpai/Kōhai.

Edit: Fixed the custom titles to include the slash and macron.

Yes, "senpai" should be the spelling because it's the one most are familiar with.

I think we're clear on "senpai" since last thread, any objections to "kōhai"?

[down] I wasn't trying to make a call, there is a second question I feel would get lost quickly.

This thread's only a day old. We have a couple more days to hash it out, and if there aren't enough votes for any option, we can have a crowner.

Not many people will actually connect with "kōhai" since its not used in any work that this trope covers. They all use "Kouhai" usually due to subtitle limitations.

Also... this trope should cover a bit more of the relationship tbh. Such as explaining and linking "Keigo" the Senpai will use 'first name-kun' and the Kouhai will use "-senpai" or "-san" and in extreme cases "-sama" which indicates Idol Worship in addition to this.

And how its heavily emphasized in High School and Office Work but not College. In High School Japanese School Club such as higher emphasis on age where the Senpai are third years while the Kouhai are the lackies who have to clean up and such. Kouhai must salute or bow when receiving praise from the Senpai and are always expected to use Sonkeigo (Respectful Language), the most formal you get without groveling, when speaking to one without the Senpai specifically telling them to stop, which tends to turn into an awkward scene in English.

In College its far more lax since ages vary but the Kouhai will be expected to use Teineigo (Polite Language) which is less formal but not casual.

EDIT: "kōhai" breaks in the preview on the website...

fwiw for a similar case on Shōnen Demographic, we use "shonen" with formatting to change it to shōnen, while Shōjo Demographic uses "shoujo" with formatting to change it to shōjo. so my understanding based on this is that kōhai would be preferred, but spelling it as either "kohai" or "kouhai" would both be acceptable.

Wait... Did you mean "Senpai" in the crowner options? And did the whole thread so far misread?

[up] "Sempai/Kōhai" is the current page and the vote is to rename it to something else.

What? They're asking if we should rename the trope, which currently is spelled with Sempai.
