Been wanting to tackle this for a couple years and the page split gave me a good excuse to bring the problem up.

Main issue is that the page has three images for a single character, with two hidden in notes. This is not helped by the similarities between the outfits making it hard to justify having all of them. Proposing that we cut at least one.

The Weiss, Blake, and Yang pages are in the exact same boat fwiw.

Was sleeping on the exact solution, and I think we should either keep the first outfit or the most recent one and get rid of the others.

As an aside, I'm pretty sure the RWBY girls are among the only characters in the show to have actual art to use as character pictures. Though I'm not sure if we care to keep consistency between pages.

I think keeping a couple is fine given there's an apparent Art Shift, though I don't like the idea of having to continuously update it.

I don't think it's really necessary considering this is 2D art for a 3D show. The show does go through an Art Shift but it's not reflected well here.

Personally leaning towards keeping the first outfits if constant updates are a concern.

RWBY: Jaune Arc and Nora and Ren (RWBY: Team JNPR) also have two images in labelnotes.

Team RWBY aren't the only characters with character art, although they might be the only ones with character art on their pages.

It was the Character Specific Page clean-up thread that wanted to split out the character pages. I did ask there about the multiple character images a couple of days ago, especially since they'll almost certainly get new outfits for the next story arc (which will probably happen in two volumes time).

The answer I got was that the RWBY character pages are in line with how the anime and Arrowverse pages are handled for characters that have outfit changes for new story arcs/seasons.

So, I guess the question is: given that a precedent exists on this site, what's the general feeling about this trend? Because, if people don't like multiple pages per character folder, it seems like there needs to be a clean-up of multiple works — not just RWBY.

On a personal note, I'm not fan of multiple images per character unless there's a very good reason for it (I think only Ozpin and Salem would potentially have that reason in this particular work, and even that depends on how spoilerific second images hidden in a collapsed note are allowed to be), especially when we know there are going to be future updates for future story arcs. But I also think that, if the precedence exists, then this shouldn't be a conversation about a single work. It should be a conversation about every work that does this.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.

I generally don't think an extra image is an issue if there's a good reason to have one. You mentioned Oz and Salem, who both have drastically different appearances in an important flashback and probably should have that extra image. I can also think of a few pages with a single extra image in tags and that's honestly fine.

The problem here is the excess of superfluous images. Like I said, the each team member has 3 similar-looking outfits and there's the possibility for more. We don't need to show off every single one, and having so many makes the captions look clunky.

I don't disagree, I'm just pointing out that I did raise the subject on another thread and they seemed to think it was in-line with other works on the site. I personally don't know the works in question, but if there is a trend towards doing this in works where outfit changes are a regular event, perhaps it's worth coming up with a guideline for how to deal with it.

After all, the reason I raised the subject on the character splitting thread is because it's highly likely that we're going to get fourth images added to these folders when they inevitably gain new outfits for the Vacuo Arc (which will probably start in two volumes time). And having four images per folder really does seem like too much. At least to me, it does.

I suppose one way of handling it could be to keep one image in the character folder and then just have an image links page if people want to add links to other outfits they've had over the course of the story.

Clock is set. Should we have a crowner? What are the options if so?

The options are basically any combination of two outfits or just the first one by itself. I specify the first because it's the outfit on the page image for WebAnimation.RWBY.

Essentially:

  • First outfit (read: currently visible without tags) only
  • First + Second
  • First + Third
  • Second + Third
  • Do nothing

I personally think first outfit only is the cleanest option to go with due to the removal of excess hide tags and just being the best for futureproofing.

Also I presume this decision would be applied to the Weiss, Blake, Yang, and JNPR pages.

I favour first outfit. It helps protect against future spoilers, which actually is an issue for a couple of characters.

I also voted for the image links page, since tropers in this fandom seem to like linking to all the outfits, it gives them a place to do that while keeping the character pages clean. As a result, I think the two options are very compatible.

Calling for first outfit only, everything else in IL. I've gone ahead and done/tagged it for Characters.RWBY Ruby Rose, and will leave this open to feedback for now about the layout of the Image Links page while I go handle some other pages before doing it for the rest of the RWBY characters.

That works for me.

I went through the character pages to see which other characters have multiple images. I've put them in the folder below; I've flagged characters that may need discussing in bold.

    Multiple Images

The number of images are in brackets, and the characters in bold may need discussion:

Discussion points:

  • Maria Calavera: Her primary image is her first appearance, but the second image is of what she looked like in her youth before she lost her eyes. This could be keepable, but it does only show a headshot rather than her entire appearance (but her eyes are plot-important).
  • Ozpin: The main image is based on his Volume 1-3 appearance, but the second image is his original form from before he became immortal and started reincarnating into different people. This one could be keepable.
  • Raven Branwen: The primary image is a later shot of her because she first appeared masked, which is what the second image shows. She doesn't have an outfit change, so the two images are just what she looks like masked and unmasked. Is this enough to justify two images? Normally, that wouldn't convince me by itself, but her mask is actually plot-important (albeit not obviously so unless you've seen the show)... so, I don't know.
  • Salem: Like Ozpin, she has two images based on current appearance and her original appearance before she became immortal and... Grimmified. However, her primary image is actually of her Volume 7+ outfit, rather than her first outfit (Volumes 4-6). So, while the second image (her original form) could be keepable, her primary image needs changing.
  • Adam Taurus: His primary image is fine. His second image is an outfit change so should be moved to an image links page. His third image, however, is of his appearance unmasked (which occurs in his second outfit). So, I think this image should be treated the same way we deal with Maria (eyes) and Raven (mask): it is about revealing what's underneath his mask, which is plot-important.
  • Nicholas Schnee: There isn't really a direct image of him in the show. The primary image is a 2D silhouette from the accompanying World of Remnant mini-series (which was done in 2D). The second image is his portrait from the main show. I'd suggest getting rid of the primary image and making the portrait his only image. I don't think it's worth even bothering with an image link page for the 2D silhouette.
  • The Grimm: I've left this until last.
    • The Geist: A Geist is like a poltergeist, it possesses objects. The primary image is of its base form, the second image is when it possesses rocks. Later in the show, a Geist possesses Dust (a Phlebotinum rock), but that image isn't on the page. Do we let it have two images or not? This might start stacking up if Geists possess something other than rocks in the future.
    • The Lancers: Monster hornets. The first image shows the Mook form and the second shows the Queen Lancer form. Most Grimm have a base and advanced form, but this is the only folder showing the two forms. In fairness, there are bigger differences between Mook Lancers and Queen Lancers, which might justify it. If we keep it, the formatting is terrible and needs fixing.

On the subject of formatting, my journey through the character pages has made me realise just how haphazard the image formatting is. There are all sorts of different image sizes, even on the same pages. Some images have black borders, some don't. Some have image quotes, others don't. Some have potholed image quotes, others don't. And so on.

...Well, I'm bamboozled, I thought we would just be handling 4 or 5 pages in this thread. tongue

I think that discussion needs too much involvement/knowledge of the work for Image Pickin' regulars. I see there's a semi-active RWBY cleanup that you started, so perhaps discussion can take place there first.

OK, I've made IL pages for the five character-specific pages and tagged everything. ~Wyldchyld, you and potentially other RWBY cleanuppers think those other options over, and if some things really do need changing, feel free to start another thread.

Locking up here.
