Tropes Needing TRS cleanup and discussion thread

I'm not missing anything and What the Hell Is That Accent? should definitely be YMMV, right?

Really? I've always seen it be used objectively.

Ah- huh. Maybe we need a split here - a YMMV trope about audiences being confused by a character's accent, and a regular trope about a character having an odd accent that kind of but not really matches real accents (Ambiguous Accent maybe?)

The only example that comes to mind is about Tommy Wiseau, in which case it's definitely an audience going "where the hell is he from anyway?".

With today's query history update, we've stumbled upon No Biochemical Barriers again. It's "soft" split into three subpages that are clearly their own tropes; the obvious solution is to send those three subpages through TLP and make them actual tropes.

Put it on the list, or does this not actually need TRS to do anyway?

It depends, I think, on if the solution is to cut that trope entirely or just to make subtropes for it.

You could start the TLP whenever but it's worth putting into TRS if making these subtropes leaves you with an empty supertrope.

I have another candidate for Tropes Needing TRS, Power Source.

Given its age and appearance, I assume it was originally intended as an index in 2009, but its Page Type was never adjusted to match.

But now it has <240 wicks and most are using it like a trope?

Should it be confirmed to be a trope and therefore allow gathering power sources that have no trope for themselves in an example section? And that sort of thing is a TRS project, right? Although I'll need to do a Wick Check to confirm.

It was originally called "Superpower Source" and had no examples. Or edits, even.

Referenced by... was put in the People Sit On Chairs/Really an Useful Notes, saying it isn't very noteworthy outside of certain circumstances, what do you think? I think it is quite useful, especially for works that aren't influential enough to have their own Shout-Out pages.

We were talking about that one before. I think most of us agree to remove it as the reasoning is very biased.

It's basically just a way to crosswick Shout-Out examples. This is a good thing.

So, if I'm reading things right, we're good to remove Referenced by... from Tropes Needing TRS.

I think Playing Gertrude should go here because it is often misused; its current definition is an actress playing characters older than she is while male actors play characters the same age as them, but it's getting a lot of examples with male characters, and not all of them state how old other actors are. It should also be Trivia since it refers to actors and not anything in-story.

Metagame, I think, is a YMMV thing. Player behavior based on other players' behavior.

I'm thinking of adding The Great Depression to the list. At the moment, it's trying to be both about the Great Depression (as the title indicates) and also about the 1930s decade as a whole. While the Great Depression was an aspect of the decade, it wasn't the only one, and most works on the page indicate nothing about it.

TBF the Depression was such a defining element of the decade — not just in America, but around the world — that it becomes difficult to discuss any aspect of the '30s without circling back to it in some way. The article itself even notes that the '30s begin and end with the Depression from both a sociocultural perspective and a political perspective.

I've been looking to open up a TRS for Kitsune. There's been some ongoing discussion on the topic on the Trope Talk forum here, but I did a wick check with the following result:

• Tally out of 50:
  • Kitsune: 11
  • Huli Jing: 8
  • Unclear: 7 — overlap with other categories ^note Refers to examples where it is unclear whether they were inspired by huli king, kumiho, or kitsune, or are simply generic multi-tailed foxes.
  • Zero Context: 11 — overlap with other categories ^note Refers to examples which lack context.
  • Sinkhole: 6 — overlap with other categories ^note Refers to examples which lack an entry in the trope lists altogether, merely being mentioned somewhere in the description section.
  • Inspired By: 6 ^note Refers to examples blatantly inspired by nine-tailed fox-spirits but called something else, or being another type of monster blatantly inspired by nine-tailed fox spirits.

This comment identified Popularity Polynomial as having an unclear definition. I personally think the concept might be too vague and PSOC-y—don't most things go up and down in popularity?

Should it be added to TNTRS?
