Not Tropeworthy: Notable Quotables

Honestly, given that anyone can put anything in a page called "notable quotables", this index has the same problem as Cult Classic did years back before it was made definition-only to prevent misuse. Of course that action was because Cult Classic is an existing term, while I believe Notable Quotables should be a JustForFun/ if not outright cut.

Huh. Did this get stealth opened, or did something go wrong and the thread didn't get locked?

Anyway, "This work has a lot of quotable lines" seems like a really useless page, especially since most "notable" work and/or creator pages have a designated Quotes/ subpage for people to list memorable quotes. This should be a quick/easy cut.

Really, I don't think this page is needed, as it's just a long list of zero-context examples. There is another trope that is basically the exact same thing, which is Authors Of Quote; no clue why we have that either.

Cut. Even if we changed the fact that it's just a list of works with no actual quotes listed, we don't need this when we have Quote Source and Quotes Wiki.

Edit: Out of curiosity, would it be possible to expand this thread's scope to include Authors Of Quote, since that page is to creators what this page is to works? The fairly recent MST3K Mantra thread's scope was expanded to include Bellisario's Maxim, so it's something that can be done.

Not sure why Authors Of Quote is being used as a trope in creator pages either. That too should go.

There's a bunch of creators listed on Notable Quotables too.

But either way, that page can be cut (and Authors Of Quote too, if we're allowed to discuss it here).

As much as I'm sorry to see that punny trope name go, it's really not tropeworthy.

Maybe we could salvage it as JFF? Or Sugar Wiki?

I'm leaning cut. I don't see much value in this page, even in JFF. (Though if it gets moved there I'm alright as well.)

Cut it to pieces! Even if we make it a JFF / Sugar Wiki the entries would still need context. Right now, it's just a list of media that apparently include many quotes with no quote in sight. Anyone can add a media to the list without proof.

Both Notable Quotables and Authors Of Quote should be cut. Anything with words in it can be quoted, and there's no point in lists of people/things with no other explanation.

Not necessarily. We moved Recycled In Space to JFF and that's nothing but ZCE. So there's precedent.

I'm not opposed to a cut, I just don't agree that this page is completely unsalvagable.

Now that Authors Of Quote is covered by this thread as well, I'll vote to cut it in addition to my previous vote to cut Notable Quotables.

I'm with Jay on this, with a slight lean towards JFF over SW.

Assuming we keep it and move it to JustForFun/, I don't believe it should be treated as an index in any capacity. Still heavily leaning towards cut.

Same, I don't really see much point in keeping a page like this.

I didn't like moving the crappy Famous Last Words and Recycled In Space examples to JFF since they mean nothing to people unfamiliar with the work, but there was at least something more substantial than this (specific phrases that stuck with people, comparing works), which is just "works/creators with stuff people quote a lot". That's not even a useful or trackable metric, and it's redundant with better indexes like Quote Source.

I'm against moving Notable Quotables and Authors Of Quote to Just for Fun, because there's nothing fun about lists of random works and creators that violate Show, Don't Tell (even more so than Famous Last Words and Recycled In Space) when it comes to saying what's quotable about them.

An alternative to Quote Source and Quotes Wiki would be referring people to Wikiquote, which can be fun to read when the pages are for people who have said funny things (despite being a sister site to Wikipedia, which inspired Troper's Law).

But Recycled IN SPACE!'s move to JFF hasn't happened yet, tho. And even you mentioned in its thread that it needs cleanup bc of the amount of ZC Es it has. This is what would have to happen if we decide to move Notable Quotables to JFF, which isn't worth it for such an uninteresting page. (If it had memorable and oft-cited quotes in it, tho, that would be a different story.)

Recycled With A Gimmick needs cleanup, not In Space.

Like I said, a cut wouldn't be a big deal to me but I do find it silly that JFF would need context.

Even without context, saying that "Work X is pretty much Work Y...IN SPACE" says a lot more than simply listing a work title, period.

I'll reiterate: A cut is just fine with me. I just wanted to pitch an alternative solution that made sense at the time I suggested it.
