Ambiguity Index - One Word Title redirects

For those who aren't familiar, the Ambiguity Index is where all disambiguation pages are indexed. Most disambiguation pages are in the Main/ namespace, but not all. Usually, the purpose of the disambiguation is for Similarly Named Works, but also includes trope articles that have a similar meaning. There is some flexibility in how similar the article names must be. It also serves as a way to make some articles more searchable.

My proposal is that all One-Word Title pages should be moved to the singular, while creating a redirect of the (title), and redirects of both plural versions. The purpose is to merge similar disambiguations into the same page.

This proposal will reduce the number of pages, but that is not the primary goal. The primary goal is that Main/ namespaced icons will appear on One-Word Title articles that are similar enough in name to disambiguations, enabling people to find the disambiguation pages more easily. Like Trees getting an icon at Main.Trees to redirect our audience to the disambiguation at Main.Tree. These sort of redirects are normally forbidden by Creating New Redirects [Do not create redirects (or pages) for [...] Plurals: Regular plurals can be linked by surrounding the singular term with curly braces and adding the "s"]. This should be an exception because the only reason to wick a disambiguation is to inform people of its existence. Unlike articles, which should have dozens to hundreds of wicks, a disambiguation page usually only has a single wick from the Ambiguity Index.

I'd be fine with that. Makes pages easier to find and reduces the number of pages (honestly, taking further measures to reduce the number would be a good idea as that index is slowly getting long). I would have probably been fine with plural redirects in any case, they aren't some sort of troper kryptonite we've seen them as for over a decade.

I think that the rule is to discourage bad linking practices, but that doesn't apply to the disambiguation pages because they're not really supposed to be wicked in the first place.

Bump because ATT is considering making War a disambiguation and my proposal would request that Wars, The War, and The Wars would be created as redirects to the disambiguation.

I support this proposal. Spreading articles with very similar names over three or four disambigs strikes me as unnecessarily clunky.

Well, War has been made without connecting it to other targets.

I support this change. Singular and plural forms of words is the same thing in my book.

Probably should dump the One-Word Title entries from my Redirect -> Disambig thread here... Such as Pixies.

But one I just found:

Villain redirects to Villains, there's Fanfic and Film, and we have The Villain disambig.

IMO Villains and Heroes should be moved to Villain Tropes and Hero Tropes (currently redirects), as they are not trope pages, but indexes.

Good thing Heroes only has 116 wicks to examine / change...

Villains has ~230...

And so long as something with wicks takes over from the page being moved from, ghost wicks should disappear because it has a new set of wicks that are sending info out.

Film.Impostor has Film.Imposter redirect...

Which of Imposter / Impostor should be a disambig, and with what targets?

Should Genuine Imposter be moved to Genuine Impostor then? It only has ~37 wicks to move if we even want to move them.

Should Film.Imposter be cut, then, as a misspelling?

It isn't a misspelling: "Imposter, an alternative spelling, is somewhat common but substandard." This is similar to the US/UK division, where both spellings are accepted, so the alternative version becomes a redirect.

Hmm, I dunno about this proposal. It does rationalize disambigs a little but I am inclined to say that only plural-singular disambiguations be merged.

Okay, so what if we only made a redirect if a(n in)definite article version of the title was made?

• The Raven would be merged into Raven.
• The Warriors would be merged into Warrior.

• The Afterlife would not redirect to Afterlife unless a work used the name.
• The Sirens would not redirect to Siren unless a work used the name.

Onto another topic...

Rebellion is a Creator and a Fanfic... And we have the Rebel Tropes index...

Climax is a The Climax redirect, not dewicked, and at least a Film and Creator.Climax Group exist...

Do we allow disambigs for works without pages? Because there's a few things call "(The) Hybird(s)", and we have pages on none of them...

But we do have pages for Half-Human Hybrid, Non-Human Humanoid Hybrid, Hybrid Power, etc.

I've seen/made lines for redlinks, but only if there is an existing disambiguation.

"Dwarves", or "Dwarfs"?

Literature.Dwarves exists, and VideoGame.Dwarfs...

Then there's Our Dwarves Are All the Same...

The other wiki claims that "Dwarfs" is the more common, but both are correct. OTOH, I've run across at least one fantasy work where "Dwarf" was the term for a human "Little Person" and "Dwarves" meant the fantasy miner/metalsmith humanoid people...

Well, we could stick to Dwarf and have them both be redirects there.

Token is a troper, but it's soo close to Token Index...

Redirect? Or disambig with something?
