Outdated Administrivia Pages

Go To

This is a thread to discuss those Administrivia pages in need of a little updating- you know the ones. The ones that still cite rules we've long since changed, or the ones that don't properly cite our current standards. Some of them are even scattered in Main/!

So, this is the place to take those pages and fix them up with the help of the community.

For a list of current projects, see Outdated Administrivia Pages.

Note: This thread is not for asking mods to make one-off edits to Locked Pages, Administrivia-related or otherwise, such as requesting additions to an Example Sectionectomy index. Please use this thread for that.

Following on from the first set of Translation Policy crowner questions, a sandbox has been created: Administrivia Translation Policy.

Any feedback or proposed changes?

Personally, I'm in favour of getting this guidance into Administrivia relatively soon now that these points have consensus, rather than waiting for the questions about fan translations, public domain works and edge cases to be settled. I think it still adds some value for tropers even without those elements.

But keen to hear what others think on that.

I think the title suggests it's a policy about translating pages on TV Tropes rather than about works in multiple languages.

Perhaps something is worth saying about translations changing the meaning of a word and thus the applicability of a trope. I am thinking of A Song of Ice and Fire, where someone "beds with boys" in the English version but with little boys in the Italian one, changing the implication - in English it merely makes the character LGBT since "boys" is used frequently for young adults, in Italian meanwhile it strongly implies paedophilia.

Fair point. The title's taken from the cleanup thread and previous troper-created sandbox, but does read oddly out of context.

Maybe: "Guidelines for troping works created in other languages"?

Maybe it could be something like "Foreign Language Media" or "Non-English Media"? It covers the same idea in a few less words

I think the catch is that it has to cover:

  • Foreign language works troped based on official translations
  • Foreign language works troped based on fan translations
  • Foreign language works troped by bilingual tropers based on an untranslated work

(Even if some of that will only be added to the page later)

Once we get a consensus on a good name here, I'll go back and rename the Translation Policy wiki talk thread to match.

Or English language works being troped via a non-English translation.

It's certainly possible.

(There are Keep Circulating the Tapes works created in English but now only available in dubbed form or as translated books, for example)

Although if you're troping, say, a Japanese translation of Hamlet for the English language wiki, there are going to be extra considerations, as not only are you distinguishing between the original and anything added in translation, you're translating some elements back to trope them.

While I don't see us troping a Japanese translation of an English work if the latter is available, other than noting adaptational differences, if the original is Lost Media, a work page for the discovered translation should indicate so.

I think further thoughts are best for the Localization thread.

[up] As an anglophone, I wouldn't personally do that. But if you have a multilingual troper who's watching dubbed TV or reading a translated book in their own country, it might happen.

Yeah, this should really go in the Localization thread, not this one.

Well, we've used the translation policy thread for the crowner. Future decisions will also he handled there.

The discussion here is about whether we're ready to publish the initial draft to Administrivia, which is probably closer to this thread's scope.

Since Main.Character Specific Pages lists policies for character-specific pages, there was internal discussion regarding whether to move it to Administrivia.Character Specific Pages. (The page was brought up after the cleanup thread tried to unilaterally change the policy instead of taking it to Wiki Talk, which is why it's now locked.)

It's neither a trope nor an index (despite listing pages, indexing was forbidden), so it kinda has no place in Main/

I've moved Character Specific Pages to Administrivia.Character Specific Pages, as discussed.

The Character Specific Pages in Main was then recreated as a redirect, at least temporarily. We can potentially delete it once wicks are updated.

For the translation page, the proposed title is now Troping Works Created In Other Languages - is that better?

Any concerns about phrasing or title before we add this to Administrivia?
