Complaining: Annoying Laugh

Intended Audience Reaction says not to list it in trope descriptions. Was I incorrect in adding an "In-Universe Examples and Intended Audience Reactions only" warning, or does the header for the example list not count as part of the description?

Edit: Also, I haven't done any cleanup yet. I just added the warning for now.

I removed misuse and ZCEs from the Real Life folder. I left examples that were either Self-Deprecation or people referencing other people.

I want to do cleanup, but I'm not sure where to start.

Due to the trope now being limited to in-universe examples and Word of God-backed Intended Audience Reactions, it's probably safe to cut anything that lacks either a reference to an in-universe reaction, or Word of God confirmation that the laugh was supposed to be annoying.

Basically, anything that simply says a laugh is annoying (even if it says what makes it annoying), without saying if it was supposed to be annoying (either because another character says it's annoying, or if the creators confirmed that audiences were supposed to find it annoying) is misuse.

Unintentional out-of-universe examples might fit under Most Annoying Sound if its TRS thread gets it retooled into a Darth Wiki page about annoying sounds in general (instead of the current definition for sounds from video games and toys), but they don't fit this trope.

That's what I figured, but some are just the character's laugh, and I can't tell if those laughs are intentionally annoying or not. Leave them hidden, or cut 'em too?

I'd rather cut it, but since we don't delete ZCEs, I would comment them out with a note starting with %% this trope is In-Universe Examples Only. Provide more context if it meets that criteria. Delete this entry if this doesn't. If it's potholed, though, I'd remove the link.

Slightly contradictory answers here, guys. Gaston basically said that if a trope doesn't explain the laugh as intentionally annoying, it should be cut, but wouldn't most of those examples be ZCEs? If so, then most of them would just be hidden, like Tabs said, but that's assuming these examples aren't misuse, but... well, the entire problem with this trope is that people are using it to complain about laughs they don't like. If the example doesn't state the laugh is intentionally annoying, it's most likely misuse, right? Or are they just ZCEs?

Ugh, I'm making my head hurt. I'm just going to go with what Tabs said, I guess, on the off chance these examples do fit...

Oh. I forgot to mention in my earlier post. If it's complaining, I suggest cutting. A ZCE I'll let slide by making it invisible, but a complaining ZCE is likely not in-universe. I did the same for angry/sarcastic Captain Obvious wicks (where neither the narration nor any other character commented upon the statement).

I still feel like I'm contradicting myself. How about: I would not miss ZCEs if they were deleted. 'Cause by this trope's nature, a ZCE is probably complaining. But if I'm feeling nice, I might comment it out.

Edit: Going through the main wicks, someone might want to doublecheck though, as I left some I'm not sure about, which seem to imply the laugh is intentional, but yet they may just be the audience's reaction...

Update: Okay, I've checked and cleaned up every wick starting with Annoyance Tropes and ending before Characters.Aria The Scarlet Ammo so far, so if someone wants to jump in, that'd be where to start if not from the bottom.

Okay, down to 647 wicks, stopped at Characters.Paladins Front Line. Basically, anything that doesn't mention character reaction or intent is being chopped. ZCEs are assumed misuse.

Tackling the YMMV pages. I did see at least one Annoying Laugh wick referring to in-universe interpretation, so that's safe. The few that I took care of so far also had wicks for Most Annoying Sound, so it's a two-birds-one-stone kind of deal.

Edit: YMMV is done, bringing us down to 622.

Same here, a lot of wicks on Character pages were also Most Annoying Sound wicks.

Ran through the one-off sections, or the sections that were small enough to do in one go.
