[up]Same. If the reason is for something unrelated to misuse, then I always comment them out (such as if the trope was merged with another; in that case, I comment ZCEs out and sort them under the trope it was merged with).

That said, I haven't been that active in this thread (other threads have kept me busy with wick cleanup, and I tend to focus on one starred thread at a time), so I'm not sure which category this trope would fit into.

[up] We're moving wicks to Dying Smirk, Die Laughing, and other appropriate tropes, but this one's wicks are ZCEs in many cases, which don't distinguish whether it's Go Out with a Smile or one of the other tropes. And others use this for any kind of corner-of-mouth-turning-up death. I'd say the category here is misuse.

Commenting them out retains wicks. IMO, it won't encourage tropers to learn trope differences, and Go Out with a Smile will accrue misuse.

[up][up] Go Out with a Smile is a trope for tearful smiles or soft laughs before death; characters die happy or at peace (for example, they live long enough to unexpectedly see a loved one and say goodbye).

It has been (mis)used for any smiles, grins, smirks or laughs before death. Even though we had Die Laughing and Dying Smirk launched during this TRS.

I'd say what I've seen in the cleanup: some are pure ZCE and there is no way of telling which of these three fits; some ZCE are a bit better: half-context examples that point to the bittersweet Go Out with a Smile but it's not absolutely well-explained either. Very few (but still some) are Die Laughing and more of them are clearly Dying Smirk.

I was deleting those complete ZCE that only had a character name — because it could be any of the other tropes.

[up] I agree.

[up]&[up][up]Got it. In that case, I see the reasoning behind what was said on the previous page.

Wick check for the Video Game namespace (55 examples):

  • Correct: 13 (24%)
  • ZCE/linked in another entry with insufficient context: 30 (54%)
  • Smile mentioned, doesn't distinguish between various tropes: 2 (4%)
  • Dying Smirk: 5 (9%)
  • Misuse for other reasons, incl. "this corpse is grinning": 5 (9%)

That's a lot of zero-context examples/misuse that's going to remain wicked if merely commented out

[up] Thank you. It confirms my guess and it also corresponds fairly well to the wick check in OP.

I believe it's a strong argument for removing ZCE.

What I've done, too, is "if I can't tell, delete as likely misuse".

What do you say about this example from Fire Emblem Fates - Hoshido Retainers and Others

  • She dies with her trademark smug grin as she confesses her love for Takumi.

Is it both Go Out with a Smile and Dying Smirk? She dies confessing her love, which implies some happiness or peace. But smug grin points to Dying Smirk.

[up]I would say it's Go Out with a Smile and not Dying Smirk. Oboro's default expression kind of looks like a smug smirk (you can see it in her gallary page on the Fire Emblem Wikia in the Portraits section), but her attitude when she dies is certainly not smug.

[up], [up][up] Got the same response over on the Fire Emblem thread, so this is Go Out with a Smile.

I'm de-wicking Ear Worm and changing Go Out with a Smile where I see them. OK- there's little overlap, but still.

Yeah, I would love to help with wicks like these, but I'm still burned out from doing a (pretty much solo and still unfinished) Good Colors, Evil Colors wick cleanup. I really have to get back to that...

I'm still working on the wicks.

I have a proposal, but i'm not sure if it's within TRS and Projects guidelines.

Most of this is resolved, so the thread could be closed and the progress report on wicks (checked and swapped when needed) could be done in a Short-Term-Projects thread. That way, one new thread could be opened in TRS.

Yeah, I actually like the idea of moving wick-cleanup to Projects and having the TRS work be for deciding the actual fate of these tropes, but that does come with the risk of even less people pitching in and the threads being unnoticed.

[up] And I fear that it means even less people willing to work on de-wicking, wick-swapping or wick-checking.

Ran into a Go Out with a Smile wick while doing another TRS project. Removed it as it was an "X: See Y" entry.

Got other projects that have my attention; otherwise I'd definitely help further.

[up] Would it be possible to "advertise" it somehow that there are cleanup efforts like this that need manpower?

Anyway 2 218 wicks > wicks 2 199.

Another bump. This trope still has too many wicks and not all have been sorted out.
