1.8 overhaul or why did the site just change on me?

Go To

We've just pushed a large overhaul public. Please report complaints, comments and concerns here. When reporting bugs, please make sure you include which browser(s) and platform(s) you have encountered the issue with.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why did we do this? This update has been in development for over a year. It replaces a vast amount of messy code on the back-end, gives us a new modernized design, updates us to https, and creates a platform that we can more easily build on for future updates.
  • Can we go back to the old design? This isn't happening. We'll make the new one work.
  • Why are there so many bugs? As with any major overhaul, some problems will occur. The developers are working full-time on fixing stuff.

Frequently Reported Issues

This isn't everything, just the most common problems.

Status Values

    General Site Issues
  • Being logged in as someone else, sort of. [FIXED]
  • Where'd the "Folders Open" toggle go? Not a bug, it's in your profile.
  • Multiple issues with the new site search feature. [Logged]
    • No sorting options.
    • Forum poster search is gone. [FIXED]
    • Can't search specifically by thread title, making results unhelpful.
    • Pagination doesn't work correctly — the last page displays as if there were no search results.
  • Line breaks don't work in some areas. (Ask The Tropers, Trope Launch Pad, forum previews) [Patched]
    • ATT, TLP, forum previews fixed. Some more line breaking issues were identified and are being worked on.
  • The Cut List does not work.
    • Cannot approve or deny requests. [FIXED]
    • Line breaks don't work. [FIXED]
    • Cut request reasons don't appear. [FIXED]
    • Additional cutlist issues noted here.
  • Note, subscript, and superscript formatting are broken in various places. [FIXED]
  • Night vision has significant readability problems. [Patched]
  • Namespace index is broken. [Logged]

    Wiki Issues
  • Articles may become locked when edited, or when backing out of editing without clicking Cancel. Moderators can remove the locks but can't fix the underlying problem. [Patched]
    • Remaining issue: the lock system still doesn't distinguish between an article that's locked and one that's checked out for editing.
  • Edits won't save when "<" or ">" characters are present in the markup. [Patched]
    • HTML detection was disabled for the time being. We're working on a more robust system.
  • Edits won't save when the [norreallife] tag is present in the markup. [FIXED]
  • Redirects are broken. [Patched]
    • This is at least partially fixed. We need to know if there are any remaining problems.
  • Indexing is broken. [In Progress]
  • Images on wiki articles are rendered smaller than in the previous design. [Patched]
    • Resizing images with [quoteright] tags is still broken.
  • The "Following" list (formerly called the Watchlist) doesn't distinguish visually between viewed and unviewed articles. [In Progress]
  • Custom titles are no longer appearing in all places where they should. [FIXED]
  • In-line icons for Flame Bait, Trivia, and YMMV wicks are intended, but sometimes overlap preceding text. [Patched]
    • Trivia icons should not appear in-line. (Design issue, logged)
    • In second-level bullets, icons overlap preceding text. [Logged]
  • The [invoked] tag no longer suppresses the aforementioned icons. [Logged]

    Forum Issues
  • [quoteblock] markup causes everything inside to appear italic and squashed together. [FIXED]
  • Line breaking for external links doesn't work correctly. [FIXED]
  • Post numbering is no longer visible, although you can retrieve it from the hard-link. [Logged]
  • "Delete all posts by user" mod feature now causes posts to be completely hidden instead of replaced with "Troll Post". [Logged]
  • "Mark all as read" forum feature doesn't work. [Logged]
  • "Save Draft" feature doesn't work as expected. [Logged]
  • Forum post preview doesn't show all markup. [FIXED]
  • Unread indicators on individual forums (topics.php) seem to have nothing to do with whether you actually have any unread posts. [Logged]

    Miscellaneous
  • Avatar upload is broken. [In Progress]
  • Avatar galleries aren't formatted properly. [Logged]
  • Crowners are broken. [Logged]
  • Namespace configurator (mod tool) is missing some auto page type options, and the namespace locking feature doesn't work. [Logged]

Bug:

Every time I log in I have to redo my Show/Hide Spoilers and Folders Open options.

I'm on Chrome, Windows 8.1.

I haven't had any problems editing though so that's good. [tup]

It seems that in addition to there being no rhyme or reason to which pages can be edited rather than leaving editors stuck with messages saying they can't insert HTML into the Source Editor regardless of what that has to do with the editor's actual contributions, there's also problems concerning whether anything's indexed or not.

Both the source code for Samurai Jack and Courage the Cowardly Dog have the necessary typing for indexing the sub-pages for their tropes, but only the former's sub-pages have been acknowledged as being indexed. The sub-pages for Courage the Cowardly Dog say that they need to be indexed when they already are indexed on the main work's page.

This index problem may or may not have something to do with the fact that certain pages are suddenly impossible to edit because of clicking Save doing nothing but showing the error message of "Sorry, you can't insert HTML in the Source Editor".

This is getting really frustrating right now.

I'm not sure if I can wait another day, let alone a week, for this mess to be sorted out.

I might be lucky because, so far, I have not encountered the edit-lock problem when editing a trope page. (Opera browser on Windows 7)

VideoGame.Vampyr 2018 and all its pages seem to have become locked since the update (AFAIK there was no drama or vandalism which prompted it).

If I'm not mistaken, I think that's an intentional part of the update.

It appears that null edits are not working in fixing the "pages needing to be indexed when they're already indexed" glitch.

The Nightmare Fuel Video Games index isn't counting as an index. So basically every game with a nightmare fuel page isn't indexed anymore.

EDIT: And I've now realized that more or less all indexes aren't working.

Apologies if this has been reported before (there's quite a lot on those list of problems) but the coding is messed up on the Latest Forum Posts page; the sidebar options are all at the bottom of the page. Pics for reference. I don't think I've seen this bug on any other page.

Holy crap I was able to post folders in a thread without them getting bugged and having to make 3-4 of them to see which ones open.

This has to be a bug because that never happened with the old design.

Okay, I'm starting to like this update. Iron out the other things, pronto!

After abit of time to settle in, I have this to say about the update: It looks mostly good on mobile (though the text in landscape is massive) but on desktop it looks awkward, especially in night mode where the text color for tropes is too dark to properly stand out from the background which kinda causes eye strain after a while (or it does for me, at least). There's also the sidebar being too wide again but there's a Userstyle thing for that.

Sidenote: I just noticed I can't click notes that are inside spoilers.

I don't mind the new design (in some places, it doesn't look that different from the previous one) but some color choices are ugly. Gotta agree about that cold dark blue-grey. And once again, the forums suck. Post boxes should come back.

I don't have any problems with the cursor while typing posts, though.

The login box sometimes disappears when I click on "Login", and I have to click again.

The preview post function must be screwed up, because it fails to show any line breaks and everything appears as a huge paragraph, which obviously isn't the case.

VideoGame.Vampyr 2018 and all its pages seem to have become locked since the update (AFAIK there was no drama or vandalism which prompted it).

That's a known glitch; occasionally when something is edited, the page gets locked instead. You can bypass the lock by manually putting the edit address into the address bar (which is probably also a glitch), and then a null edit will unlock the pages. I already did it for Vampyr.

Also, as an addendum to my statement about the Quotes, now I also notice that they suddenly start to take up way more space than they used to. This is especially an issue for wordier ones. From what I can tell, they have more than doubled the space they take. And that mostly seem to be due to just unused empty space between rows. While this isn't so much an issue on Quotes pages where there is enough space to go around, on Trope and Works pages it causes issues even for quotes that aren't even that long.

Though one thing I noticed that I like are tropes on the related pages now being divided into sub categories, though it is in dire need of refinement.

Similar to the quote issue, lists in the "Newest Trope" feature on the main page jumble together with no linebreaks, which looks pretty messy.

I don't like that YMMV pages have the exact same color scheme and font as the main page. Doesn't have to be huge, but having a slightly different header color or something would help to keep people confusing the two areas (which we definitely don't want).

Search feature seems to be improved— hits are more related and less random seeming than in the old one. I still don't have a cursor though (Firefox on Mac OS 10.11.3).

Someone further up was complaining about "the admins" removing tropes. A friendly reminder that the Trope Repair Shop exists, and that trope removals/changes are done by community consensus. It would be great to get more users involved, as only a small subset of the community tends to participate for whatever reason.

A few more I've run into: 1. The Preview button isn't working (Firefox, Windows 10) 2. Have the Back and Edit Page buttons been removed from each page's History?

While on the page for Metal Gear Solid 2 I came across an odd glitch with the small image next to the YMMV troped, it seems to overlap with the text: https://imgur.com/SlrjE5D
