In fact there are two, depending on the sector.

  • For the fandom in general, there is Satoru + Kayo, which there are still many people who still sad that they did not end up together.
  • For the fandom that writes fan-fics, being a fan of Yaoi and toxic relationships, the favorite is the protagonist Satoru and the Killer.

[up] But neither Satoru nor the killer have creator preferred relationships. So the second point doesn’t count.

Ok, I'll just add Satoru and Kayo as an example.

Although in Satoru's case it is implied at the end of the manga that he will have a relationship with Airi, in a Maybe Ever After Way.

But since Satoru's relationship with Airi is semi-canon at best, I guess your point still stands.

I'm submitting an entry that I wrote. From Bluey's page:

  • Some fans are much more interested in exploring Grandad Mort's relationship with his best friend Maynard than that of his deceased wife/mother of his children.

While it's a bit on the short side, I standby that, from my sample size, Bluey fans are more interested in pairing Mort with Maynard. However, I think I might be misunderstanding the trope. My attempt to write an entry for Knives/Kim (which was a bit of a mess admittedly) used their history with Scott in canon despite not ending up with him as justification. As it stands in Bluey right now, Mort is not in a relationship with anyone (with his wife being dead and all). Does that discount this from being a Fan-Preferred Couple? If so, I will remove it.

Found this on Danger Mouse:

Firstly, it's a ZCE. Secondly, I'm pretty sure the original 1981 series didn't have any actual couples involving the titular protagonist himself, so why would there be a fan-preferred one? If anything, this could fit under several other LGBT-related items, but I don't know if the "relationship" is strong enough for the entry to even qualify there.

What do?

From YMMV.Disney Fairies

  • Fan-Preferred Couple:
    • It would appear that Terence was supposed to be Tink's love interest, but a significant portion of the fandom thought he was a pretty boy caricature (he's simply nice to the point of blandness, with his only real quirk being that he's a Neat Freak), and thought that Tink/Bobble was much more appealing.
    • Tink/Vidia has an immense following as well. There's a good number of fanfics dedicated to them. Not surprising, really. Just take a gander at the Les Yay page.
    • Tink/Silvermist also seems popular for Silvermist being a supportive friend to Tink.

So, I did a deep dive into this fandom, and I can't find a single place where any of these are more popular than Tink and Terence and of the three only her and Vidia comes close to it. Bobble and Clank is even more popular. To be clear the most popular ship has nothing to do with Tink. So, am I good to cut these?

From FanPreferredCouple.Arrowverse:

  • Oliver's daughter Mia is canonically paired with Diggle's son JJ or his adopted son Connor, but most fans pair her with Barry's daughter Nora instead, despite the fact that the two of them haven't ever been on screen together. In the old timeline, the two hadn't even met, but it's implied that they do know each other in the new one.

So, um I can't find a place that it is actually more popular to ship her with Nora. To be fair there is not much in the way in shipping for her period, because, similar to say Henry Mills from OUAT, most of the time she is mentioned in shipping it is as an addition to her parent's (be it Oliver/Felicity or Oliver/someone else) ship and not as her own thing.

From FanPreferredCouple.Live Action TV:

  • Elliot Stabler and Olivia Benson of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit as a heterosexual pairing, with Alex Cabot and Olivia Benson for slash fans.
    • In the later seasons, shipping Benson with ADA Barba seems to be more popular than shipping her with her canon love interest Cassidy. Given the near-constant lingering gazes, gentle touches, blatant concern for each other, late-night drinks, and sizzling chemistry — and the fact that actors Raul Esparza and Mariska Hargitay also ship the two characters together — this is not surprising.
    • For slash shippers, Barba/Carisi has become an increasingly prevalent one as Carisi as a character became more popular.

The most popular ship is Stabler and Benson, but isn't that canon?

[up] It's sorta canon NOW and even then they aren't actually together, he was married for most of it and at most they had some lingering glances sometimes. These days the show is a lot more open about the fact that whenever it ends they'll be endgame, but I don't think that was the idea back in the day (but I don't know enough about what's been said about the ship behind the scenes to know for sure)

[up][up]We already brought up Benson/Stabler as a historical example a long time ago that would stay regardless of current canonicity because it took over 20 years for them to get together and they were Fan-Preferred that whole time.

Okay. It will need a rewrite. What is his wife's name so I can rewrite it? Also, what about the others? I don't really remember if Alex, Barba, or Cersei has any canon romances.

  • Fan-Preferred Couple:
    • The amount of Kimber/Stormer works can make you forget Kimber's boyfriends.
    • In the 2010s, Pizzazz/Jerrica caught on as a somewhat popular alternative to Rio/Jerrica and Riot/Jerrica.

Okay the first one counts easily. The second one, however, in my experience while Pizzazz/Jerrica is more popular than Riot/Jerrica it is not more popular Rio/Jerrica and that is Jerrica's main relationship.

Also from YMMV.Gaia

Fan-Preferred Couple: Many fans started shipping the thief Viviana and Ilias due to the fact that she keeps conning him, much to his chagrin. It only intensified after their dynamic set into a friendly one and she suggested pretending to be his fiancee. It is official now

If it’s official then it can’t be fan preferred couple, right? Also the comic is still ongoing.

All the instances of this trope on Saint Seiya pages have a ton of issues.

From YMMV.Saint Seiya:

  • Fan-Preferred Couple:
    • Seiya and Shaina have way more fans than Seiya and Saori, that was an almost Official Couple in the anime continuity. Might be correct, but AO3 and ff.net stats don't add up since they both show a clear preference for Seiya/Saori.
      • Seiya and Shaina's relationship gets way more focus in the manga, while the anime adaptations decided to focus on Seiya and Saori.
    • Also, Aioria/Marin. ZCE, but they are mainly teased with each other in canon anyway, so they don't count.
    • On the Yaoi side of things, there is Hyoga/Shun. I know they have some female love interests but not only are they written out of the story as soon as their roles are done, they never cross over into actual relationships.
    • Camus/Milo is the most popular yaoi couple and one of the most popular couples in the franchise, despite their friendship never being confirmed in the manga (or particularly, it's never specified how close they actually are, they could as well be just acquitances). Doesn't count, because they have no canon love interests.
    • Degel/Kardia is also a really popular yaoi ship, since they are expies of Camus/Milo. Same issue as above.
    • Temna/Alone, and Sasha/Sisyphus in Lost Canvas. ZCE. No stated canon couples.
    • Saori's crush on Seiya is often shunned in favour of pairing her up with either Saga or Kanon, despite the two being 28 and Saori being 13., even though the ages don't make sense continuity wise. Looking at AO3 and ff.net stats, these are minor ships that don't even come close to comparing to Seiya/Saori's popularity.
    • Deathmask and Aphrodite are popular for sharing the trait of being the only genuinely evil Gold Saints. It's helped by the fact that they're always seen together in the OVAs. Doesn't count, because they have no canon love interests.

From YMMV.Saint Seiya The Lost Canvas:

  • Fan-Preferred Couple: On the het side, Yato x Yuzuriha is universally supported by the whole fandom. On the gay side, thanks to all the Ho Yay, many fans support Tenma x Alone, Kardia x Degel, Manigoldo x Albafica, and of course Dohko x Shion. No stated canon couples for any of these.

From YMMV.Saint Seiya Omega:

  • Fan-Preferred Couple: Koga X Yuna is very popular in the fandom due to how much time they spend together and due to the fans' desire to include a romantic relationship in the franchise for the first time. During the Sanctuary Arc, fans became happy with the focus on Yuna who was often worried about Koga's mental state. This was even better when Yuna stops Koga from his own darkness by awakening her Seventh Sense. No stated canon couple for either character.

So should all (or most) of this be deleted?

Bit of a weird question: if the main reason a ship wasn't endgame is because one of the actors left the show, does it still count as fan-preferred against the ship that WAS endgame but likely wouldn't even exist if it had been up just to the writers?

I guess in most cases that's hard to be certain, but the one I'm thinking of, from the Brazilian tv show As Five, was 100% this - perhaps they wouldn't have been endgame because the series was cancelled and they had a very on-again off-again relationship, but they definitely would have remained love interests.

Either way the ship would count in relation to this trope because people like the new love interest better with someone else as well, though.

[up] I guess it depends. Were they canon before the actor left? If so, no I don't think so. If not, maybe.

[up] That's fair. It' a weird situation because As Five is actually a spin-off - in the original, they were canon and endgame, but the series presents them as exes who had a very toxic relationship before and after breaking up. It's pretty obvious the show would eventually have them get back together, but the first season (which was the only one the acress who played Samantha was a part of before leaving) doesn't exactly show their relationship in the best light.

I'll only do an entry for the other side, then. Does this sound fine:

  • Fan-Preferred Couple: The second season had both Lica and Ellen become interested in Maura. Between the pair having a better dynamic as well as the fans not being able to accept anyone with Lica besides her ex-girlfriend Samantha, Ellen and Maura quickly became the more popular option. However, Maura fell for Lica instead and they stayed together until the end of the series.
