Diversity and Representation in Media

Go To

A thread for discussing representation and diversity in all kinds of media. This covers creators and casting decisions as well as characters and in-universe discussions.

Historical works and decisions are in-scope as well, not just recent news.

Please put any spoilers behind tags and clearly state which work(s) they apply to.

    Original OP
For discussing any racial, gender, and orientation misdoings happening across various movies and the film industry today.

This week, producer Ross Putnam started a Twitter account called "femscriptintros", where he puts up examples of how women are introduced in the screenplays he's read. And nearly all of sound like terrible porn or are too concerned with emphasizing said lady is beautiful despite whatever traits she may have. Here's a Take Two podcast made today where he talks about it.

[up]Yes, yes they do.

There’s this weird thing with Western writers where you either go all the way under (the black woman is a sexless ogre and is presented as such, implicitly or otherwise, and feel free to combine with Sassy Black Woman for maximum revulsion) or all the way over (over sexualized to a hilarious degree, such as the film adaptation of Beloved showing a really messed up sexual assault...involving a character played by Oprah Winfrey.) There is almost never any attempt at nuance.

You also never see a black woman depicted as gentle, good-natured, and loved by all. Always that [up].

A cruel, sick joke is still a joke, and sometimes all you can do is laugh.

Or when you do, it’s because she’s a Mammy stereotype.

Wait, what, there are people racistic enough to call Sheva ugly? O_o; I think my mind got blown because I never realized people can have that warped view of the world. Like, sure, its one thing to not being attracted to traditionally attractive people or characters designs, but I don't think that is the case there.

On side note, is anyone else repulsed by people who think other people are ugly?

I've always been really fed up with people callous enough to call other people ugly. And not just because its cruel to do that, it also says how twisted and warped the person's thinking that is because to me "ugly" doesn't mean "I'm not attracted to this person", it means "I feel repulsed and unpleasant looking at this" and similar things. Hence why I'm horrified there are people saying or thinking that about other people, like I don't think human beings can actually be ugly. To be a person who can't stand sight of someone else, you have to have really twisted worldview.

@erazor: I could have sworn I've seen that, but I'm not sure if webcomics count when discussing writers in general.

The sad part is that this attitude towards Sheva is likely encouraged due to Resident Evil 5's bad reputation and the fact that Sheva is one of the controversial elements of the game.

Sheva herself is controversial?

She was honestly one of the highlights of that game and her relationship with Chris wasn’t bait but pretty respectful.

Info is being released about the American “Your Name” adaptation. It’s going be directed by Marc Webb and feature a boy from Chicago (probably white) bodyswapping with a Native girl (tribe unspecified).

My expectations are... not high.

Well, it kind of makes sense...Your Name is heavy on "old lore and tradition" and it is not like white American culture is awash with either. Native American culture is. Question is if they will manage to deal with it respectfully.

Sheva has a bad reputation thanks to being a notorious case of Artificial Stupidity. The racial aspects about her have never really been something i have personally seen. Most racial complaints are the setting and gunning down african citizens.

Honestly i have no problem with the setting. Save the tribal section, that was a bit too stereotypical.

Then again, RE 4 is an even bigger mess in how it portrays spain.

Yeah I was aware of how the implications were of gunning down infected Africans as a white guy

Sheva, AI aside, is good

Will still shit on the decision to do a Western remake of Your Name

Most of the complaints I've seen about Sheva is that she's very dull despite being the Deuteragonist, in contrast to Josh Stone who is also black but is an Ensemble Dark Horse and Memetic Badass, or Ricardo who is loved for being a very Large Ham. Should be mentioned some of the characterization choices they went with for the already-existing characters are also controversial as well. If anything regarding her race is brought up it's about her being But Not Too Black.

I'm not really sure how Sheva looks dull in comparison to Chris (her partner), who is the epitome of generic dudebro white guy.

Chris isn't particularly well-regarded as a character either, not in comparison to the likes of Leon, but he benefits from having several games' worth of goodwill and established backstory and relationships to fall back on in comparison.

I'd also say Sheva suffers from being sexualized, what with the gratuitous close-up of her rear end and the fanservice-y alternate costumes.

Wait, is chris adudebro or am I forgetting what term mean?

I kinda thought dudebro was a guy who constantly says "duuuuuuuuude" or "broooo" and tries to hit on women with lame lines while thinking they are cool. That or is a stoner

Chris on otherhand is more of "I am player character with non descript personality because I need nothing more than a generic personality" right?

He's a pretty typical "heroic" character, whose most notable traits are his protectiveness towards his sister Claire, and his camaraderie with his fellow S.T.A.R.S. members like Jill and Barry. Not a frat boy by any means, but he is a fairly generic "military" type character and it's not until RE 6 that they try to give him any kind of serious character arc. Most of his charm comes from his more memetic aspects such as the infamous voice acting of the first game, those above relationships, and the aforementioned boulder incident.

Also his constant redesigns, most infamously him being a lot more muscular in 5, spawning steroids jokes.

And somehow there is a theory that he might be gay but i really haven't paid much attention to it

Will Smith on why he turned down the role of Neo in The Matrix

[up] Ah ah before they came to address that I was wondering if they would have picked a white actor to play Morpheus.

I've heard before about Val Kilmer being considered for Morpheus and Will Smith for Neo but I didn't think this happened concurrently. I agree with Smith, honestly, that he'd have messed up the film to some extent. The charismatic wise-cracking style Smith still deployed all the time in the downturn of the 90's wouldn't have suited Neo all that well. Keanu Reeves fit the role way better and Fishburne was perfect for Morpheus.

In hindsight, it is pretty funny that The Matrix trilogy ends up basically killing off its entire main cast except for the black guy, Morpheus.
