Diversity and Representation in Media

Go To

A thread for discussing representation and diversity in all kinds of media. This covers creators and casting decisions as well as characters and in-universe discussions.

Historical works and decisions are in-scope as well, not just recent news.

Please put any spoilers behind tags and clearly state which work(s) they apply to.

    Original OP
For discussing any racial, gender, and orientation misdoings happening across various movies and the film industry today.

This week, producer Ross Putnam started a Twitter account called "femscriptintros", where he puts up examples of how women are introduced in the screenplays he's read. And nearly all of sound like terrible porn or are too concerned with emphasizing said lady is beautiful despite whatever traits she may have. Here's a Take Two podcast made today where he talks about it.

.....So all Jamaican people eat Jamaican food and have lots of black friends. Which is what she's implying. (never mind that Idris isn't even Jamaican)

Like this implies that if you don't do something then your not "Black enough" which is vile

She wants more of black culture and society represented in TV beyond merely individual black characters every now and again. How is that so hard to understand?

So stereotypes like that are a good example of that ?

Why are you defending this ?

Plus assuming that All uk people of black descent are Jamaican for some reason.....

Wait, what even is the argument? Is it "There is a pattern of having characters of an ethnicity appear without the writers ever trying to incorporate anything of that culture and it needs to change"? Because that I can be on board with.

It is entirely possible for a character to be written as completely disconnected from their culture, or what people would assume their culture should be based on heritage- but if that's the rule then that's a little concerning.

[up]Yeah, that's the argument as I read it. The miscommunication stems mostly from Luther being a very bad example, because he really is kind of disconnected from pretty much everyone.

Yeah he's supposed to be an anti-social and dysfunctional person without friends.

He could very well be a very bad example. Fixating on that is missing the point. Continuing to fixate upon it is arguably intentionally missing the point.

You could portray Elba's Luther living in a black neighborhood while not having him be friendly with any of them, if that's the issue.

To pity someone is to tell them "I feel bad about being better than you."

I literally said the same thing when this thing started and got blown off because he's "written to be a default white character" becaUse he's antisocial and dysfunctional I guess.

Would you two stop arguing about Luther? If you want to pick this topic, please use other examples because the argument gets fixated on Luther and goes literally nowhere.

I agree there's a bigger conversation to be had about 'authentic' representation but Luther is a bad war horse for it.

47 Ronin 2 Sets Former WWE Star AJ Lee & Lucifer Actor To Write

The sequel to 47 Ronin has found its writers, with former WWE star AJ Lee and Lucifer’s Aimee Garcia penning the script. Directed by Carl Rinsch, from a story by Chris Morgan and Walter Hamada, 47 Ronin premiered in 2013 and featured Keanu Reeves in the lead role. The movie served as a fictionalized account of the forty-seven rōnin, a real group of masterless samurai who worked together to confront their rival and avenge the death of Asano Naganori. Despite its origins, the story has little in common with the original historical tale. It is instead set in a world which includes witches and giants.

According to Deadline, Universal 1440 has tapped AJ Mendez and Aimee Garcia to pen the script for the forthcoming 47 Ronin sequel which will be directed Ron Yulan. The duo is best-known for their appearances in front of the camera, as Garcia portrays Ella Lopez on the Netflix series Lucifer. As for Mendez, she appeared under the ring name of AJ Lee in WWE from 2010 until her retirement in April 2015. During her time with the company, she won the championship on three occasions and helped to break barriers in terms of how women’s wrestlers were perceived. Still, both Garcia and Mendez are accomplished writers who have previously collaborated on projects.

Mendez is the New York Times best-selling author of Crazy Is My Superpower, a memoir that detailed her upbringing and bipolar disorder. Together, they’ve written comics based on the wrestling drama series GLOW. They’re also the co-authors for IDW Publishing’s Dungeons and Dragons, in addition to a Wonder Woman story for DC Comics which will be released in July. In a statement, Mendez and Garcia promised that the sequel will prioritize diversity and inclusivity. Mendez noted, in particular, that the 47 Ronin will be a “multicultural story with powerful female leads.”

Mendez is no stranger to powerful female characters. Her run as AJ Lee provided WWE fans with a complicated and layered women’s wrestler that was, at the time, rare for wrestling audiences. Given that the duo is prioritizing a different angle with the 47 Ronin sequel, in terms of who will be at the center of the story, it should be interesting to see if the sequel is more warmly received than its predecessor. It’ll be interesting to see if Mendez’s wrestling background plays into the kind of setpieces that make it into the final cut.

Fellas.

What the fuck.

That's a lot of questions in there. 47 ronin to begin with ends with everybody dead, and secondly AJ Lee has no Asian ancestry to my knowledge (Reeves at least had some considerable asian ancestry, though it was Chinese rather than Japanese).

Huh you aren't kidding

  • Box Office Bomb: Its budget was around $200 million (and that's just for the movie itself, doesn't cover things like advertising) but it flopped badly, only making around 150 million dollars in the box office. This resulted in Universal Studios to take a write down. It's even worse that it didn't do well in the Japanese box office despite the Japanese All-Star Cast and being loosely based on a famous Japanese folk tale. According to The Other Wiki, adjusted for inflation, it's the second-biggest bomb in history, behind only The 13th Warrior.

Second biggest bomb in history. And their making a sequel.

So a sequel to a Box Office Bomb, with a pro wrestler writing the script that has no discernable Asian ancestry.

This is going to be a complete trainwreck, and why would you hire AJ Lee?

And "Powerful Female Leads" I mean....HOW?! I'm all for powerful women characters but...that's not the POINT of the tale of the 47 Ronin. I mean...how? Did you even read the original tale....get any info on what Japan was LIKE at that time period?
