A thread for discussing representation and diversity in all kinds of media. This covers creators and casting decisions as well as characters and in-universe discussions.
Historical works and decisions are in-scope as well, not just recent news.
Please put any spoilers behind tags and clearly state which work(s) they apply to.
This week, producer Ross Putnam started a Twitter account called "femscriptintros", where he puts up examples of how women are introduced in the screenplays he's read. And nearly all of sound like terrible porn or are too concerned with emphasizing said lady is beautiful despite whatever traits she may have. Here's a Take Two podcast made today where he talks about it.

.....So all Jamaican people eat Jamaican food and have lots of black friends. Which is what she's implying. (never mind that Idris isn't even Jamaican)
Like this implies that if you don't do something then your not "Black enough" which is vile

"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."She wants more of black culture and society represented in TV beyond merely individual black characters every now and again. How is that so hard to understand?
"...in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."So stereotypes like that are a good example of that ?
Why are you defending this ?
Plus assuming that All uk people of black descent are Jamaican for some reason.....

"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."Ok, I'm going to stop engaging with you because I feel like I've answered all of this and you're just being obtuse on purpose now.
"...in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."Wait, what even is the argument? Is it "There is a pattern of having characters of an ethnicity appear without the writers ever trying to incorporate anything of that culture and it needs to change"? Because that I can be on board with.
It is entirely possible for a character to be written as completely disconnected from their culture, or what people would assume their culture should be based on heritage- but if that's the rule then that's a little concerning.
My AO3Yeah, that's the argument as I read it. The miscommunication stems mostly from Luther being a very bad example, because he really is kind of disconnected from pretty much everyone.

Yeah he's supposed to be an anti-social and dysfunctional person without friends.
"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."He could very well be a very bad example. Fixating on that is missing the point. Continuing to fixate upon it is arguably intentionally missing the point.
"...in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."You could portray Elba's Luther living in a black neighborhood while not having him be friendly with any of them, if that's the issue.
To pity someone is to tell them "I feel bad about being better than you."I literally said the same thing when this thing started and got blown off because he's "written to be a default white character" becaUse he's antisocial and dysfunctional I guess.
"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."I mean, that would genuinely be better. That would be actually be closer towards what this person was advocating for.
"...in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."Would you two stop arguing about Luther? If you want to pick this topic, please use other examples because the argument gets fixated on Luther and goes literally nowhere.
My AO3I agree there's a bigger conversation to be had about 'authentic' representation but Luther is a bad war horse for it.
The former head of HFPA caused controversy for the Golden Globes when an email of his leaked saying Black Lives Matter was a racist hate movement and its leaders Marxists. The organization has publicly apologized.

He straight up compared BLM to the Mansons. And apparently is the same guy who Brendan Fraser accuses of sexually assaulting him.

47 Ronin 2 Sets Former WWE Star AJ Lee & Lucifer Actor To Write
Fellas.
What the fuck.
That's a lot of questions in there. 47 ronin to begin with ends with everybody dead, and secondly AJ Lee has no Asian ancestry to my knowledge (Reeves at least had some considerable asian ancestry, though it was Chinese rather than Japanese).
"All you Fascists bound to lose."Magic
Back from the Dead could be in effect or maybe it's a prequel ?
"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."OMGWTFBBQ? Are they seriously considering a SEQUEL to that dreadful 47 Ronin film that BOMBED?
Huh you aren't kidding
- Box Office Bomb: Its budget was around $200 million (and that's just for the movie itself, doesn't cover things like advertising) but it flopped badly, only making around 150 million dollars in the box office. This resulted in Universal Studios to take a write down. It's even worse that it didn't do well in the Japanese box office despite the Japanese All-Star Cast and being loosely based on a famous Japanese folk tale. According to The Other Wiki, adjusted for inflation, it's the second-biggest bomb in history, behind only The 13th Warrior.
Second biggest bomb in history. And their making a sequel.
"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."zombie 47 ronin!
New theme music also a boxSo a sequel to a Box Office Bomb, with a pro wrestler writing the script that has no discernable Asian ancestry.
This is going to be a complete trainwreck, and why would you hire AJ Lee?
Someone must have really wanted this sequel to be made, box office failure or not.
Disgusted, but not surprisedAnd "Powerful Female Leads" I mean....HOW?! I'm all for powerful women characters but...that's not the POINT of the tale of the 47 Ronin. I mean...how? Did you even read the original tale....get any info on what Japan was LIKE at that time period?
"Stereotypes" ok dude
"...in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."
