That's why I left it out. As for losing a fight, it is perfectly possible for him to lose, it's what happened to him in the Zero series.

But yeah, toned down the Super Strength to just general super strength and leaving the Limitless Potential out to keep him nerfed.

Question: do new people get to just jump in with a signup or did signups close while I wasn't looking.

If the former, how do I get up to speed?

Signups are still open. But if you mean "just jump in" as in put up the signup and then immediately start posting, then no; you need to have the signup approved by me first.

If/when you are approved, then I'll let you know what you should do to get up to speed.

Ok that was not the next morning lmao

I'm a bit iffy here since I had to do some fuckery to maintain the appropriate Super Weight plus some analysis of a very short Mime and Music-Only Cartoon and tenuous knowledge of the supplemental material but here the fuck goes.

  • Story: Mystery Skulls Animated, near the very end of the second video
  • Name: Lewis Pepper
  • Age/gender/species: 21 (as of death)/m/ghost
  • Appearance: We're assuming the suit is from some sort of cultural bleed effect.
  • Personality: A textbook Rose-Haired Sweetie, when not Freaking Out or singlemindedly obsessed with revenge and the search for his lost love. Mind the locket; it's a Berserk Button. His favorite genres are adventure and romance.
  • Backstory (First-Episode Spoiler warning): Showed up one day on the Pepper family doorstep in poor shape. They took him in and, unable to find any clues as to where he came from, raised him as their adopted son. Growing up in Tempo, TX, he met longtime friends Arthur and Vivi. As they grew older, Vivi developed a fascination with the paranormal, gaining employment at the spook-themed Tome Tomb book/comic store and eventually starting the Mystery Skulls Association, to seek out ghosts, aliens, fae, and the like. Consisting solely of the three of them and Vivi's dog Mystery, they engaged in many paranormal investigations throughout the state, which unfortunately proved to actually be rather barren of supernatural phenomena (Vivi's convinced they're just shy and she would be right). Over that period he and Vivi developed a romantic relationship so strong that they refused to let anything do them part; Arthur on the other hand seemed to fade into the background, growing more reserved and jealous as time went on. One day, the MSA decided to investigate an unbuilt mining facility, abandoned during its construction due to rumors of a malicious spirit, but rather than the investigation ending fruitlessly as usual, Arthur took the chance to Murder the Hypotenuse, shoving Lewis 50 feet into a pit of spikes. Unbeknownst to him, the spirit they were looking for was real, and while it did need an entry point in the form of Arthur feeling like a third wheel, it ultimately called the shot on that incident before being ripped from its attempted host by secret kitsune Mystery. As icing on the cake, Arthur doesn't remember shit about what happened, and Vivi has mysteriously forgotten his very existence. He's only seen them once since, an attempt at reunion/revenge that failed miserably and near-crushed any hope he had of finishing his earthly business, but after an encounter with a strange plant woman he's once again become Hellbent on righting great wrongs.
  • Skills/powers/abilities
    • Lack of Biological Needs: Kind of a given. How many times can a guy die anyway? some members of the current lineup may say "twice"
    • Incendiary Exponent: Its primary use is in maintaining his Flaming Hair, but Elemental Punches are fair game too.funny that  Under extreme duress, he can cause a large fiery explosion, but this is exhausting enough to force him to retreat into the locket on his chest (see Items), leaving him completely defenseless until he recovers. In other words, a great excuse for if I'm ever unable to participate for an extended period of time while he and a number of other people are getting their asses kicked.
    • Projectification, or A Word I Just Made Up Now: Can create tangible projections of mundane objects. though this seems to be limited to objects that can fit in an average-sized room for reasons noted in Incendiary Exponent. Sorry buddy, no spoopy party mansions for you. Can also reskin objects, so to speak, but this is purely cosmetic and always matches his color palette.
    • Dead Beats: Ectoplasmic familiars. They're weak, can't be more than 100m away from him, and don't do anything he says, but they're great if you need to harass someone for a couple minutes.
    • An Excuse to Redecorate People's Things Without Their Permission: Can possess vehicles. Not much to say here.
    • Maintaining a distance of at least 2cm above ground whenever in motion: Self-explanatory. Only works on himself. Maintaining any height higher than 3 1/2 feet requires an active effort, semi-proportional to the distance above ground.
  • Items: Constantly carries a heart-shaped gold (grayish-blue when broken) locket containing one (1) soul (his own), and one (1) photo of him and Vivi from when he was alive. Will retreat into it if sufficiently damaged or after literally exploding (which is to say overexertion).

@Ms Ami Classified: Well, I've never heard of Mystery Skulls Animated, but I checked out the two videos since they're short along with checking the character page and such. This all seems accurate enough.

The only problem I have is with the truck. It's big and potentially exploitable since it would be a default item for Lewis. And that's assuming it's just functionally a semi truck with an aesthetic change and not imbued with any crazy ghost powers or anything like that.

Hmm, well it is a food truck, and from the sound of things food is a big deal in the current in-game day. Fair enough. And even if it was empty and wrecked on the way in that's still free scraps for your Rick.

I'll ditch it. I'd only be losing about seven seconds of canon content anyway.

Sorry for the late response; had to go to sleep between my last post and now.

I was considering the food thing, but honestly at the current point the day is in it isn't much relevant whether the truck had food in it or not. What I was concerned about is the fact that it's a multi-ton semi truck that would make a very effective battering ram against say, a boss fight or a building; and as a default item he'd get it back in perfect condition every time he died and every time midnight comes around. (Barring day conditions removing it.)

So I mean, I could be alright with him coming with it if it isn't going to be counted as a default item. So either that or not coming with it at all would be okay I suppose.

Lewis Pepper is accepted.

Now, it would actually be fairly weird for him to arrive right now. The day is nearing it's end and we just started its climactic battle. Also the locations that he'd arrive at are currently swarming with different types of zombies packed shoulder to shoulder that would immediately attack him despite him being a ghost. It would be a bit better if you waited for the next in game day to start; unfortunately I can't give an exact ETA on that but it'll probably be about a week.

But as for things you should do before joining in either case: Read the first post of the main thread, to see what Lewis' arrival should be like, and check out the first post of the discussion thread to see a description of the city, the current day conditions, and other various material and links. If you are going to try joining now, you should recap the last few pages of the main thread at least, to have an idea of what's currently going on.

Alright, thanks. I realized the free, easily-regenerated battering ram thing but didn't acknowledge it in the previous post (apart from acknowledging that even if it were wrecked beyond repair we still have a guy who can make anything out of anything). I might make a joke about how he just narrowly failed to steal what would've been a game-breaking item, should comedic timing allow.

And, yeah. I was thinking about having him pop in literally right now, but if the day's almost over I really might as well wait, simply because dumping a new combatant right into the climax of a current shenanigan feels like awkward writing.

I've mostly changed my mind regarding Asriel, but it wasn't until now that I finally settled on who I'd rather switch to.

Warning for some Xenoblade spoilers below.

  • Story: Xenoblade
  • Name: Melia Antiqua
  • Age, gender, and species: Female High Entia of 88 years (although by human standards she looks to be around eighteen or so).
    • Melia is half Homs, aka her world's version of human. She identifies primarily as a High Entia, however.
  • Appearance: I must not lose focus!
  • Personality: Outwardly, Melia appears to be a haughty and formal princess sort. In reality, she's fairly modest, humble, and kind, if a little confused as to how things work outside her sheltered life at times. She's also not one to dwell on bad things that have happened to her. She's also protective of her friends and fairly observant of her surroundings.
  • Back story:
    • Melia was born to Emperor Sorean Antiqua and his Homs second consort, in the High Entia captial of Alcamoth atop the head of the Bionis. Her early life was fairly typical of High Entia royalty; she wasn't allowed to walk outside much, but was well educated about everything she'd need about royal life.
    • At around 88 years of age, she and her trusted guardians Aizel, Hogard, Garan, and Damil were sent to Makna Forest on the Bionis's back to deal with a beast called the Leone Telethia. Her guardians lost her lives defending her, but Melia managed to wound the Telethia before falling unconscious.
    • Fortunately for her, a group of Homs lead by a boy named Shulk found her on their quest to the Bionis's head. They managed to bring her back to consciousness, and after an awkward first meeting she lead them to Frontier Village, the home of the Nopon, with the intent of helping them on their way before getting back to hunting the Telethia.
    • However, Shulk and friends offered to help her defeat the Telethia. She initially tried to turn them down, but realized her own flaws and eventually accepted. Through their combined efforts, the beast went down.
    • Afterwards, Melia lead the group up to the Bionis's head and eventually to Alcamoth. Upon her return, she learned that her father had chosen her as his successor to the throne.
    • However, Yumea, the first consort, wasn't so happy with this arrangement. She hatched a plot to try and kill her, via making her undertake the Trial of the Tomb.
    • Melia undertook said trial, and would have passed swimmingly if it weren't for the assassin and her pet Telethia Yumea had sent there. Fortunately for her, Shulk and crew had been alerted to her potential fate via a vision and arrived just in time to save her bacon. She helped them deal with the assassin and the Telethia, and fortunately the Homs' (and Nopon's) interference didn't have any outcome on her success.
    • The celebratory ceremony that was to take place upon their return to Alcamoth was cut short by a Mechon attack. In order to fight them off, Sorean turned to desperation and headed to Prison Island, a sealed place on the Bionis's head.
    • Melia made the decision to follow him to Prison Island. Once there, she bore witness to the freeing of Prison Island's prisoner, a giant named Zanza, the creator of the legendary Monado. She also lost her father Sorean to a faced Mechon Shulk and crew had deemed "Metal Face."
    • Metal Face got soundly thrashed, although he was not destroyed. To finally put an end to him, Shulk and crew decided to head to Galahad Fortress at the base of the Mechonis's sword. Melia initially had royal duties to perform and could not accompany them, but some political trickery by her brother Kalian left her free to accompany them to Galahad Fortress.
    • ...And that was about when Melia got whisked away to the City.
  • Skills/powers/abilities:
    • Melia has a number of different Arts, which are listed here. She'll have most of these, but not all of them (I left out Reflection, Summon Ice, Power Effect, and Summon Copy. I don't think she'd have the former three at the point in her story I'm taking her from, and the latter's effect wouldn't matter for the RP).
    • Melia can manipulate ether, which is another way of saying she's a magic user.
      • Most of her ether-based skills are elemental summons, which take the form of a ball of elemental energy that floats by her. She can send them flying at enemies in what's known as an elemental discharge. As long as they're present they'll boost the abilities of nearby alliesnote . She can only have three of these summons around at a time.
        • Summon Bolt: An electrical summon. If kept around it boosts her allies' supernatural abilities, and while it's her strongest summon it can only hit one target.
        • Summon Flare: A fire summon. If kept around it boosts her allies' physical strength, and when discharged it will hit everything around its target and inflict a nasty burn.
        • Summon Wind: A wind summon. If kept around it boosts her allies' speed, and when discharged it will hit everything around its target.
        • Summon Aqua: A water summon. If kept around it will slowly heal her allies, and when discharged it will heal Melia by leeching energy off its target.
        • Summon Earth: An earth summon. If kept around it will increase the amount of punishment her allies can take, and when discharged it can poison its target.
      • As Melia uses her elemental summons, she'll accumulate ether within herself. When she gains enough ether, she'll enter a Burst State. Her summon attacks will become significantly stronger, and she gains access to two skills she can only use while in that state. The Burst State will wear off after a while.
        • Burst End: Melia releases a spherical burst of ether energy in a short range around her. Anyone caught in it will take more damage from incoming attacks for a while afterwards.
        • Mind Blast: Melia's strongest attack. A large, fan-shaped burst of ether energy released directly in front of her. It'll seriously hurt anyone caught in its way, but it takes her a little while to gather the energy needed to use it and will automatically end her Burst State when used.
      • Healing Gift: Melia can sacrifice some of her own health to heal an ally.
      • Hyponotise: Melia attempts to surround an enemy in vapor that will put them to sleep if it succeeds. It can be shrugged off, plus it won't work on enemies who can't fall asleep to begin with.
      • Shadow Stitch: Melia releases some dark energy around her position, which will prevent anyone it hits from moving for a while.
      • Spear Break: Melia channels some ether through her staff and attempts to stab her target with it. If it connects, it will send the target hurtling back some and will slow them down for a while.
      • Starlight Kick: Melia throws a strong roundhouse kick at a target. On its own it has no special properties and will leave Melia vulnerable for a while as she picks herself up, but if used after Spear Break it has a high chance of knocking even large targets down.
  • Items: Melia has a staff that she uses to channel ether with. It has no special properties of its own, although it'll hurt if Melia smacks someone with it.

Well, I've heard of Xenoblade only a bit before and have never really been familiar with it; same goes for my friends. I checked out her character page entry though and it all seems accurate enough.

I'm alright with the buffing, but a couple of her abilities do need some addressing in my opinion.

Lesser mention is just that hypnotise obviously couldn't work against all targets, like anything that simply can't fall asleep.

But the more major mention is mind blast, which, well frankly just sounds broken. An AOE attack that does great damage and shuts down supernatural abilities? There's pretty much no conventional enemy short of a boss fight that wouldn't be immediately boned sideways by that, and even a lot of bosses would have trouble if they got hit by that. I'm not really okay with accepting it as it is currently presented.

Point noted regarding Hypnotize; that's been edited in.

As for Mind Blast...I don't want to remove it altogether as it's one of Melia's signature attacks (notably she uses it a lot in cutscenes), but I can see how it'd be broken even with the stipulation that it's usable only in Burst Mode. So as far as nerfing it goes:

  • I'm fine with removing the "suppressing supernatural abilities" thing altogether.
  • I probably should have mentioned that it only hits in front of her, so I'll mention that. It also has a little bit of a charge time to it as she gathers the energy needed to fire it off.
  • Finally, I'm thinking using it will automatically end Burst Mode here, preventing Melia from spamming the fuck out of it. As well, I can couple this with it taking longer for her to build up her ether here, making her have to work harder to gain access to it.

If even this isn't suitable, I'm okay with removing it entirely.

Alright, this took a lot longer to finish than I expected... But anyway this seemed like an interesting RP last time I heard about it (around day 7 I want to guess), but I wasn't really up to a crossover RP at the time. Now that I've been reminded this is still going AND still accepting new member, I guess I might as well try it out.

  • Story: Cave Story (Curly Story ver, which swaps the main character with normally supporting char, Curly)
  • Name: Curly Brace
  • Age, gender, and species: Apparently 18-20/ Female /Ridiculously Human Robot
  • Appearance: Official face pictureBut her costume is pretty much thisOr this. Probably worth noting with the costuming is due to not having any pockets big enough for it, Curly typically carries her sword on a loop attached to her belt.
Curly is designed to be able to pass off as a human soldier (albeit one that's about a head shorter than most adult humans in the game) and in her home universe and is fairly successful at doing so (even unintentionally) until examined closely. The antenna ears that don't come off are a pretty big clue though, maybe most people had assumed they were just headgear of some sort.
  • Personality: Outgoing, upbeat and confident, Curly's default attitude is surprisingly cheery. She's selfless when it comes to protecting others, especially children. But she has very little experience with society outside of the the caverns.
  • Back story: Curly woke up one day in a cave, alone, unarmed, and with no memory of how she got there or who she was beyond her name. With little else worth doing, she started exploring in search of clues, or at least a way to get to the surface. While Curly herself never regained her memories, It's eventually revealed by her formerly amnesiac partner (the role swapped main character) that 10 years ago several squads of soldiers had been sent into the caves to retrieve the Demon Crown, a dangerous item that grants it's wearer mastery over some powerful magics and several of the cave's more dangerous residents. At the same time he and Curly, a pair of scouting robots, were secretly sent among the soldiers with the goal of destroying the crown instead. Someone had already claimed the crown by the time they were able to locate it, and after a long battle they were able to defeat it's new master, but his dying attack sent both robots to separate areas of the caves before they could truly finish their task and inflicted heavy damage, taking them off-line until just recently and causing their amnesia
  • Skills/powers/abilities: Surprisingly few for a robot. Her design was focused most on mobility, meaning she's very quick and agile. She is surprisingly strong for her appearance, but not super strong. Her antenna ears allow her to receive and transmit signals and communicate at long distances if she can find something compatible... But she's never had an opportunity to do so to her recollection.
    • Health Expansions: During her adventure she's picked up quite a few of these upgrades, making her much sturdier than her human-like appearance might seem.
  • Items:
    • Booster v2.0: A type of jetpack, worn on the back that provides extremely fast propulsion in almost any direction for a brief amount of time before Curly recharge by landingnote
    • Air Tank: A device to protect Curly from drowning in water. When active and entering a body of water it automatically creates a small forcefield just around her keeping water out and air in, allowing her to breath underwater for an unlimited amount of time. Though it limits her "swimming" to walking, jumping, or boosting, but she not buoyant enough to float anyway.note
    • Machine gun An automatic handgun that fires "bullets" of plasma instead of metal. Has theoretically unlimited ammo but can only fire so many shots (only a few seconds worth at full auto) before needing to recharge. Fortunately it recharges automatically while not firing, and it can be fired in bursts even without a full 'clip'.note
    • Spur: A grey handgun similar to the Machine Gun without the automatic fire or need to pause and recharge. Instead, the Spur is capable of being manually charged to fire a single concentrated, continuous beam of destruction instead of individual plasma bullets. Charging takes several seconds.
    • Blade: A white sword. While Curly is a mediocre melee combatant (aside from advantages from being a machine), she's found the Blade makes a surprisingly handy throwing weapon Houses the soul of King, a mimiga (local rabbit person) warrior and former owner of the bladeSpoilers
  • Other: Ridiculously HUMAN Robot: For whatever reason, Curly's creators apparently went to great lengths to make her as human as possible, and they seem to have succeeded. She needs to breathe or else she'll pass out (possibly due to mechanical parts over heating/being waterlogged), and she's even shown to being able to eat, digest, and be affected by food very similarly to a human. Though presumably she doesn't actually need food or drink to survive.

A side note, I'm not sure how the weapon levels mechanic would work in an RP setting. So I'm guessing that can be safely ignored for the most part... Though the Machine Gun. Blade, and Missile Launcher all have somewhat unique effects when fully leveled up.

Also, on the Blade. I'm sort of debating either leaving it behind, or tweaking it a bit. Since outside of the context of the game using it as a ranged weapon doesn't make much sense. I mean, throwing and retrieving it all the time seems pretty impractical (even though that's not necessary in game)... Not quite sure if I should bring the Missile Launcher either, since it's both bulky enough that I'm not sure how she keeps it with her other than just carrying it in her hands all the time (which seems like it'd make interacting with anything else hard). Plus ammunition balance concerns.

Had some second-hand experience with Cave Story because someone played as Balrog back in the first season of the MMFRPG, but otherwise I have not played it. But, I checked out the character entry and a few other things, and this all seems accurate enough.

As for what you bring up; the leveled weapons thing really wouldn't work here in this context. For one, it's unique to her universe anyway; nobody she'd be fighting in the RP would drop EXP crystals, so if only by attrition she'd eventually end up with all her weapons being at base level regardless. Better to just have them all at base level from the start, because they sound more balanced that way too.

The sword you can just have her use as a melee weapon in this context, or keep throwing it; it doesn't really matter.

The missile launcher I'd just leave out. It would restock every midnight, assuming it isn't taken away or replaced by the day conditions, and every time she dies, but yes it would be pretty awkward for her to keep lugging around if she doesn't have any kind of hammerspace to store it in. Given what I said about the other weapons, I'd force you to keep it at the stock of 10 maximum, too.

Darn, no machinegun hovering or triple rocket launcher

Yeah, I didn't think anyone would have EXP crystal short of shinaniganry or if some of her universe's monsters popped up for some reason. Level one is just fine. I'll go ahead and ditch the Missile Launcher too, the only hyperspace storage she's got is the in-game inventory screen after all tongue

Keeping the blade, might mentally retcon a bit of melee blade use in, but she's still programmed to be a ranged fighter so not much difference there. And who knows, it might be fun for something.

Jumping in right now wouldn't really work because we're in the middle of the climax for Day 9, so I'll ask you to wait until Day 10 starts. I don't have an exact ETA on that, but it will probably be sometime this weekend. Before then, you should check out the first post of the main thread to see what Curly's arrival should be like; and also check out the first post of the discussion thread for various links and things like a description of the city and other things meant to be helpful. Since you'll be jumping in on a fresh day, you don't really have to recap any of the main thread, but you can if you want to; we also have a recap page, as one of those helpful links in the first post of the discussion thread.

And although you shouldn't join in the main thread yet, feel free to join the discussion thread and start chatting.

I'm allowed to scrap Toko and make a new character sheet, right?

*Story: Professor Layton (Specifically during The Curious Village)

  • Name: Professor Hershel Layton and Luke Triton
  • Age, gender, and species: Layton is around 37, male, and human.
    • Luke is about 11, male, and also human.
  • Appearance: Layton is the one on the left, while Luke is on the right. Disregard the watch.
  • Personality:
    • Professor Layton is a professor in archaeology, and true gentleman. He has a polite demeanor and is able to keep his calm even in dire situations, thanks to his Stiff Upper Lip. He also possesses a love for tea, and an even greater love for puzzles. Layton is usually willing to help others in need. He happens to be very protective of his apprentice, Luke, and would do anything to ensure his safety. Despite his skills in fencing, Layton will not attack others even in self-defense, as a true gentleman never causes harm to others.
    • Luke is Layton's apprentice, as he calls himself. He strives to be a true gentleman, just like Layton. Although usually sensible and very kind, he sometimes loses his temper, but feels somewhat bad about it after calming down. Luke also happens to have a love for stuffed animals and eating.
  • Back story:
    • Hershel Layton was born as Theodore Bronev. He and his older brother, named Hershel, lived happily with their mother and father. That ended when their parents were kidnapped by the organization Targent after their father made a breakthrough while researching the ancient Azran civilization. Their mother died in captivity, and their father, Leon Bronev, eventually became the leader of Targent. Fortunately, the two brothers were able to find a couple, known as the Laytons, who were willing to adopt, but the Laytons could only adopt the elder, Hershel. In order to give his younger brother a better life, Hershel convinced the couple that Theodore was Hershel. From then on, Theodore Bronev became Hershel Layton. It should be noted that Layton was too young to remember any of this at the time. For many years, Layton lived with his parents in the small town of Stansbury. When he was seventeen, his best friend, a budding archeologist named Randall, convinced him to tag along on a trip to find a lost artifact. It ended in disaster, and Randall seemingly died. Layton left Stansbury soon after, shocked and saddened by Randall's death. Many years later, Layton became a professor of archaeology at Gressenheller University, in London. After receiving a letter from Clark Triton, another old friend of his, Professor Layton went to solve a mystery in Misthallery, where he met Luke. After discovering the cause and putting a stop to the mysterious events there, Layton took Luke to London with him as an apprentice.
    • Luke Trition was born in London, but he and his parents moved to Misthallery soon after he was born, as Clark (his father) had become the mayor of it. During the mysterious and destructive events that took place, Luke found that his father was becoming very distant towards him, and so he began to hole himself up in his room. Only later did he find out it was because his mother and butler were being held hostage. Using his ability to talk to animals, he was able to tell the police which areas people needed to evacuate from. When Professor Layton arrived, he decided to help him solve the mystery. Afterwards, Luke decided to become Layton's apprentice.
  • Skills/powers/abilities: Besides being a phenomenal solver of puzzles, Professor Layton is very skilled at fencing. He is also very good with logic. Luke is also a skilled puzzle solver, though not as skilled as Professor Layton. His real talent is his ability to talk to animals.
  • Items:
    • Top Hat- Layton's signature hat. He never takes it off, except maybe to sleep. It makes him very recognizable, but not much else. He received it as a gift when he was 27, from his girlfriend Claire, who would later die in an accident involving an attempt at time travel.

Select the URL and hit enter again. It might not work on a phone or mobile though, I don't know.

Anyway, I'll try to actually respond to the signup sometime later tonight, though it might have to wait until tomorrow/the day after.
