Disney's Live-Action Thread

Becuase the amount of Live Action remake threads are getting cluttery, I made this thread so people could discuss all of them in one neat place. For ease of catching up, I'll post all the Live action Disney movies we have and the movies that will be coming soon.

From the Nostalgia Critic: "Why Do Disney Remakes Keep Making Money?"

He misses a couple things. There's a strong point to be made that these are the only movies of their type being made right now, at least good ones. You could take your kids to see some chintzy badly animated low budget fantasy film that will make your ears bleed (or one that simply very badly marketed, like Wonder Park), or you could take them to see a fairly decent remake of something you know was good the first time around.

I think these attempts to find reasons for why these movies are successful are a little presumptuous. It's like how the Teen Titans Go hatedom went all over itselves trying to figure out why this show they hated was successful. Especially his spiel trying to rationalize why kids like them: kids don't care about our nostalgia. They never have. They never will. A few decades from now, they'll care about their nostalgia, but not ours.

Ultimately, much like TTG, it's because the groups that want to see this paradigm end aren't necessary for its longevity. They don't see themselves as a Vocal Minority: the fraction of people who are "tired" of these remakes is proportionately small, so their lack of support for them isn't actually keeping them from succeeding.

[up] For what it's worth, at least, my cousin is thirteen, has never seen the original Lion King, and still thinks the remake is bad and unnecessary. These are still extremely valid points, though.

NC is also a hack with no actual film sense so I really don't see his content worth acknowledging.

Not to mention there are big names not on the camera as well. "Jon Favreau? The director of Iron Man? He's directing The Jungle Book? I've got to see this." Kids don't care much about directors, but adults do.

[up][up] This.

I have no idea why anyone takes Doug Walker seriously. He frequently has no idea what the hell he's talking about.

Rumor: We Got This Covered is hearing James and the Giant Peach is being considered for a live action remake and it seems to be different from the Sam Mendes directed one from back in 2016.

[down] Maybe I should clarify the article. It seems there was ongoing talks for Sam Mendes to direct a Jat GP live action remake back in 2016, but it looks like those talks either broke down or were shelved.

I didn't know there was a 2016 version. Does it have the "Cloud Men" sequence?

If I had a nickel for every film where Emma Stone falls off a balcony... I'd only have two nickels, but weird that there's two of them.

Much like Pete's Dragon, this would be another regular old remake I suppose.

Also like Pete's Dragon, this would probably be one of those things where removing songs, making things darker/"realer", actionizing it, etc and so on would probably just result in it ending up essentially a different movie.

A lot of things that defined the original: the casually grim tone, the neo-gothic 90's designs, the simple plot focusing mostly on the journey, even minor things like the "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue, are all things that are out of vogue today and probably would end up absent.

Funny thing is that "Where they are now" ending was taken from the book.

The same site is also reporting a rumor that The Great Mouse Detective is going to get a live-action-ish remake.

Like I said elsewhere, I'm sure someone at Disney has written concept notes for a remake of every single film they've ever made. That doesn't mean any will get any further than that, but I think that's all these rumors are based on.

Still, Tony Goldmark suggested Tom Hiddleston as Ratigan, and I can see it.

That site spreads unsourced rumors all the time. I don't trust them at all.

It's more likely we'll see sequels to Disney's recent remakes than remakes of their Dark Age films.

I mean, that's cool but WHY NOT A TV SHOW?

Of all the Disney properties unplumbed, Great Mouse Detective is maybe the best fit for a tie-in television program. Kids mystery shows are fun (and rare, to boot), and Disney loves it's mystery angle ever since Gravity Falls.

I can't see a live-action/cgi remake of GMD not looking silly.

I mean... cgi mice in Sherlock Holmes get-up?

Yeah, a big-budget live-action film whose titular character is a CGI rodent dressed up as a detective? That would never work!

Come to think of it, Great Mouse Detective does also have the angle of letting them have fun showing a live action environment from a very small perspective, which is legitimately really fun when done well.

If done right, it could hit a lot of the same fun feeling that The Borrowers or Ant-Man does.

Genderflipping Jock was NOT cool, Disney.

And yes, I know Jock's been planned to be female in the remake for a long while already, I'm just actively displaying my displeasure for it.

So, which Disney live-action remake do you think is the best? For me, it's Aladdin (2019), because I appreciate the changes made to Jasmine's storyline, the added power to the musical numbers, and Guy Ritchie's signature style of editing and dialogue.
