I think it'd be better to go full-on Medium Awareness, and start doing a Deconstruction on pretty much every trope in the original Bubsy games while avoiding a full-on Darker and Edgier transition.
Also, in terms of "of course they went there," the official Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter account reacted to this news. And the (obviously pretty new) official Bubsy Twitter account responded in fine form.
Reminder: Offscreen Villainy does not count towards Complete Monster.Oh, Sonic twitter account, you're so cute.
Then again that would so be what Sonic would say.
I tweeted at the Bubsy account too. (Not that anybody cared.)
Say, Bubsy actually looks pretty good, right? It's not just me? He's no Mario or Sonic, and he'll probably be a laughingstock until the end of time, but his design is appealing and memorable.
Is that a Wocket in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?Memorable isn't quite how I'd describe it.
Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectHis design to me feels like a parody of a bad mascot platformer.
Like, a shirt with an exclamation mark? That's the best they could come up with?
The only reason we remember the design is because of its relation to average-or-terrible games. If not, Bubsy would be just one of many forgotten 90s platformer mascots.
I blame Sonic Forces for this.
Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectWhat, seriously? I find Bubsy's silhouette and color scheme instantly recognizable. He looks no worse than, say, Banjo or Crash Bandicoot.
Is that a Wocket in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?Different tastes I guess.
Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectWas Bubsy unpopular before Bubsy 3D ruined his image? I remember playing his first game as a kid and finding it moderately enjoyable.
Is that a Wocket in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?Don't really know. The original games were OK-ish, I think, if not particularly good, but Bubsy 3D (and to some extent the animated series pilot) really did a number on him.
Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectHe's been considered a mediocre and obnoxious character as long as i've been on the internet. All the Bubsy games before 3D are typically thought of as average at best.
That was actually the only Bubsy game I'd ever played. Back in 1997/8, me and my family had just gotten our first game systems, a Nintendo 64 and a Gameboy, but we were still wondering what we were missing on the other side of gaming pond. Determined to solve this dilemma, we rented a Playstation from our local video rental store and, unsure of just what was and what wasn't considered an actual good game, grabbed the closest things we could find off of the shelves. And one of the games just happened to be Busy 3D.
I'm not even sure if we really even played it for more than an hour, if that. I barely remember the game, but what I do remember consisted of badly rendered polygon environments and dying. Lots and lots of dying. I don't think we ever touched the thing again. And 20 years later, now knowing just who the hell Bubsy is, I'm pretty damn sure we made the right choice.
They really should give it the It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia treatment. Make it the ultimate Sadist Game.
Glenn Howerton as Bubsy. You search the game for his TOOLS, HE'S GOT TO HAVE HIS TOOLS
"All you Fascists bound to lose."So. Bubsy's making a comeback. Who's next? Awesome Possum? Punky Skunk? SOCKET?
...Actually I'd like if the lattermost one returned. At least Socket was a robotic duck with crazy kicks. That noise when he's low on energy though can stay where it is though.
When you wish upon a side of beef, soon will come an end to all your griefI hope the only one that can be brought back is Gex, because he felt more like a parody of this kind of mascot rather than a straight example.
I'd be down for that.
Honestly, I think he and Bubsy are the only ones who can/could be feasibly brought back. Gex because of the above point, and Bubsy just because of how infamous he is.

"Lucian, don’t be afraid, we’ll make it through this."Ha, I kinda hoped the "Gextra Life" charity stream by Chip Cheezum would give Gex a Colbert Bump.
Anyway, Mega Man's getting in on the Twitter fest.

Gex was created by Crustal Dynamics which is now part of Square Enix.
...as much as I like Gex, if Squeenix brings back fucking Gex after killing off Hitman, Tomb Raider and Deus Ex, I'd freaking riot.
No love for Aero the Acro-Bat?
Is that a Wocket in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?Oooooh I remember him! Damn was that game hard for me when I was young....
I loved in-game Bubsy from the first game. He was much more of a put-upon Medium Awareness character rather than the Mascot with Attitude that he was in other appearances (including the manual). If they bring back original Bubsy, I think he could make the comeback. I believe in you, Bubs.
Reminder: Offscreen Villainy does not count towards Complete Monster.I liked that about Bubsy too. He was a struggling actor who just couldn't catch a break, which makes what happened to his series oddly prescient AND a more interesting story than the actual story.
Course, at the end of the game he takes all the credit while you 'helped'. Pride before a fall?
The Protomen enhanced my life.
The fangames Bubsy mentions in the "interview" did that, I think. Make the character super dark and tragic. An official version of that would turn a lot of heads for sure, but it would also be seen as a Bad Fur Day knock-off.
