I feel like if they really wanted to Win Back the Crowd they'd make a Brave movie with the adult Merida from the film's opening

Me, I want a Crossover movie where it turns out those Vikings the older generation fought off? They were from Anna and Elsa's kingdom, and now they've come back, leading to a big Merida vs. Elsa battle.

Frozen takes place in the 1840s, the Vikings sailed from the 800s to 1000. tongue But they can still have a crossover.

[up] Because how does one invent time travel in the 1840s? By inventing steampunk? But when would steampunk ever be a thing? In the 1930s or 40s?

What bugged me about Brave was the extremely misleading marketing. It was setting up a heroine going off on a grand adventure about seizing her destiny with magic and witches and was instead a mediocre mother/daughter conflict movie.

I still don't understand how "I want to change my fate" = "turn my mom into a bear". Like even by Jerkass Genie standards that's some Insane Troll Logic. That quite frankly changed nothing about Merida's fate.

Disney's done the occasioanl temporally ridiculous crossover before.

I still remember the Aladdin / Hercules crossover, which has to be a break in time of at least two thousand years.

The implication is that the witch is unreasonably obsessed with bears (witness all the bear carvings). So whenever someone wants magic to help them (whether that be having the strength of ten men, or getting their mother to change their mind), the witch will somehow conclude that turning into a bear is the best way to accomplish that.

Side note: There's a YA sequel novel to Brave, called Bravely, that released literally a year ago (May 2022). Consensus seems to be that it's Surprisingly Improved Sequel when it comes to the world building and the young adult Merida's characterization.

> she comes across the god of ruin, Feradach, who seeks to destroy Dunbroch due to its stagnation. Fortunately, before he does so, the goddess of creation, Cailleach, intervenes and gives Merida a task.

this sounds way more interesting then Brave's original plot

Late, but if I had to rank the non-Toy Story Pixar sequels (being real, if I was including the TS sequels they'd take all four of my top spots), I'd probably go like this (from best to worst):

  1. Finding Dory
  2. Cars 3
  3. Incredibles 2
  4. Monsters University
  5. Cars 2

I gave Finding Dory the top spot because IMO it's still a very good movie in its own right even if it's not quite as good as Finding Nemo, plus I liked the new characters it introduced and I liked how it expanded on Dory's characterization. I think its only real issue is that it hits quite a few of the same story beats as Nemo, though, at least for me personally, it wasn't enough that it brought down my enjoyment of the movie that much and I still loved the movie overall.

I figure it's probably a super-hot take putting Cars 3 second, but honestly it surprised me a little how enjoyable I found it. Though maybe I'm biased a little because I find the history of American auto-racing interesting and I liked all the little nods to its history that it included. 😅 The story overall felt like a more natural continuation of the original Cars movie, and I thought Lightning's arc in the movie was (mostly) well done.

I still enjoyed Incredibles 2 as well, though I do agree it's vastly inferior to the original movie and I feel like the new characters it introduced just weren't that memorable (especially the movie's antagonist compared to Syndrome).

Personally, I thought Monsters University was meh. I have no particularly strong feelings toward it and I didn't really find the story all that memorable, either. How they went about Randall's Start of Darkness was interesting, though.

Cars 2...is Cars 2. tongue

The plot synopsis of Bravely indeed sounds a lot more interesting than Brave itself was. And I understand the woodcutter was obsessed with bears, but turning Merida into a bear, for instance, would have actually fit the "change my fate" wish. It feels really out of nowhere to turn only her mom into a bear.

After a few days away, I'm resuming my Disney Animated Canon marathon with movie 17: 101 Dalmatians!

Another movie about dogs, how could I not love it?!

This was the first movie Disney used xeroxing to animate for cheaper after Sleeping Beauty ended up costing way too much to produce, resulting in a sketchier artstyle that persisted in their films up until the 80s. The style has its detractors but personally, I'm a fan of it. I feel it has plenty of character and still looks nice, even if it's not as traditionally gorgeous as the fully hand-drawn stuff.

The puppies are absolutely adorable and Pongo and Perdita are nice protagonists, but of course the real star of the show is the nasty lady herself, Cruella de Vil. She's just such a delightfully camp and entertaining villain that makes the most of her every scene. She's an evil, puppy-killing bitch, but goddamn it she's so fun to watch! Jasper and Horace are fun, too; they're pretty much the quintessential bumbling evil henchmen.

I never read the book (apparently it has aliens in it or something? Weird) or saw the live-action films (including the recent Cruella movie with Emma Stone), I did watch some of the One Saturday Morning TV show some when I was really young, but I don't remember much of it, but this is one of the Disney classics that I owned as a kid and watched plenty of. It's not among my absolute favorites, but it's a fun and adorable little movie.

Pointless anecdote: "101 Dalmatians" is the film that introduced me to the expression "on the house".

Which confused me as a kid. Like my immediate thought was "Why is the milk on the roof of the barn?"

Also, while Disney fans debate over which film used CGI first, The Black Cauldron, or The Great Mouse Detective ( Production-wise, it was the latter) Chuck Jones once commented that technically this film was the first as Xerox machines at the time were considered a type of computer.

You can knock the Xeroxed look of the 60s and 70s films but it has its own charm, if you ask me; especially when you combine it with the Ronald Searle-inspired style of this one.

Yeah, 101 Dalmatians had that distinct look that I don't think the other cartoon films got in that era. Not even Aristocats iirc

I'm thinking about how to fix the snorefest that is The Good Dinosaur. I honestly feel like the caveman aspect should be removed. Make it like Zootopia but with non-anthro dinosaurs.

Make it like what Don Bluth wanted The Land Before Time to be.

A feature length version of the Rite Of Spring segment from Fantasia, with no dialogue and only narration.

Although I guess it would just be "Walking With Dinosaurs".
