It's pretty obvious to me that she's not actually dead, but weird marketing choice. They really should have seen the Unfortunate Implications coming.

I'm curious why most Alcoholic Parents are fathers but most Junkie Parents are female.

[up] I'm not familiar with the latter stereotype. Drug usage in media always seemed unisex.

[up][up] It allows women to ignore reality when it gets painful for them from my understanding.

Code Geass does this with one episode where its shown Kallen Stadtfeld's mother is addicted to a Fantastic Drug called Refrain because of the abuse she gets from the legal wife of a Britannian nobleman who impregnated her (Japan was conquered by the Holy Britannian Empire and that Japanese who don't forsake their heritage are called "Elevens" as Japan became Area 11 after being conquered and that Kallen is half-Britannian and half-Japanese), combined with the death of her son and Kallen's brother early in the series, gets her addicted to a Fantastic Drug called Refrain which works as a hallucinogen that allows people to relieve happier times. This gets Kallen to be angry at her mother and although she ends up abducted by a Refrain-dealing drug cartel, Kallen cares less but when she sees her mother relieving a time far happier, Kallen realizes she only suffers the abuse that led her to Refrain in order to make sure Kallen is provided and she stops hating her after that.

[up] I understand why characters use drugs. But, if anything, more male characters do drugs. You rarely see female characters use drugs unless they're mothers or sex workers.

Women being alcoholics is not that unusual either, I think, but yes men are probably more common.

If drugs = poison and poison = woman's weapon... there you go. That's the logic.

Granted, alcohol, weed and nicotine are also drugs, but they are the manliest of drugs, no? The swords and guns of the chemistry world, as it were.

Other drugs: only the womanly and weak succumb.

I think its because thin, pale, and sickly/helpless has been a sexualized view of women since Victorian Times. It went from "Tuberculosis is sexy" to "Heroin is sexy." No, I'm not making this up. Consumption by women and Heroic Chic are related.

[up]The book vampire forencis make the case that victorial deseas influence in the look vampire as pale people.

And with drug and alcohol, I have seen woman abusing bear often in two flavors: alcholic mother like helga pataki mother in arnold or in action shows the messup but badass woman, like levi in black lagoon, in fact my girlfriend said it was getting a bit bit of cliche.

Also I just use this oportunity to said roberta from black lagoon is awsome and I will fight anyone who said otherwise.

There might be a level of Values Dissonance going on as alcoholism is primarily associated with women (especially working women, see Lady Drunk and many of their takes on The Lad-ette) in Japanese culture.

[up] Salarymen are stereotyped as alcoholic, but it's not generally to the point of a problem.

Going to agree with Charles: The reason why there's more female Drug addicts is because usually are associated with some type of sad fading or already faded beauty While Alcoholism lacks it.

I suspect that alcoholism is also more tied to violence and destruction of others and addiction to other drugs tied to emotional despair and destruction of self.

Yeah. Alcoholism is associated with physical.violence against others while the "classic" view of drug is more like.Self.destruction (nevermind the drugs that actually lead to.violent behavior, through they are treated as alcohol when they appear)

Which isn’t to say there are never examples of the mother being the alcoholic. Hey Arnold of all shows strongly implied that Helga’s mom was an alcoholic.

There was the whole "Valium mother" thing in the 50s and 60s, too. You can see it in B-movie parodies and so on, like Destroy All Humans!.

It's been fun.

I do recall some steretype of 80's/90's women self-medicating with prescription or over the counter medication to deal with problems.

One of the problems is that alcoholism among women just isn’t taken as seriously as with men. If a woman drinks in the morning to get through the day, she’s a “wine mom”, and at the most people just get uncomfortable. But if its a guy, people will rightfully point out he has an addiction and needs help.

[up]it depend on which drink and what drug: beer is conected to drow the sorrow so it see with rough men who waste the life away.

cocaine have the same funtion but without the roughness of being conect to comon working class like beer does, so it easy to show a woman being degrading herself by and for cocaine.

When women get drunk in fiction it's usually through wine or cocktails. Beth from Rick and Morty for example goes for the boxed wine. Her father Rick on the other hand goes for whatever he's got in his hip flask.

[up]And when woman get drug in fiction usually is cocaine or crack if you want to show them as self destructive, with marihuana becoming more a "teenager trying stuff" thing nowdays.

The New Kid's parents from the South Park videogames are also substance abusers. The mom is the alcoholic parent who indulges in a lot of wine, while the dad's drug of choice is good ol' Mary Jane (marijuana).

It's...not a happy marriage.

Both are using drugs to cope with the huge secrets of their past. Coming clean to the New Kid during a time travel visit to the past takes a huge weight off of their shoulders meaning they no longer need the drugs to deal with their problems. This results in a new timeline where the parents are Sickeningly Sweethearts instead.

If a cocaine or crack user is depicted sympathetically, they seem to more frequently be women. Men, however, are the "scary junkie on the street who robs you" or "the pathetic loser who uses abuses drugs" characters.
